Scratching Our Brand New Paint!

  • Continuing on with our Defender 90 rebuild we fitted the wheel arches and wings back to the defender! The respray has been going well and the wings came out really well we think. Only being able to see each other on Saturdays makes us probably too eager to make progress and therefore as you can see mistakes have been made. The paint scratch is gutting when we think about how long it took to paint.
On the bright side with the defender getting closer and closer to being finished we are starting to plan some adventures for the car and that will be really exciting!
In the next few videos of the defender we will be trying to remove the windscreen in order to paint that top half section which will be completely new for us but like everything you only learn if you have a go.

guys while the body pannels are off you really should be painting and protecting to chassis and bulkhead, the aluminum bits you are painting dont rust the steel bits do , plus the first time you brush past any undergrowth off road your paint will be totalled

As in applying under-seal to the chassis? We haven’t bolted the panels fully in yet so I could still do that! The bulkhead was replaced just before I bought it so luckily that’s in good shape!

Tough luck with the scratch! I’m sure you’ll be able to sort something out!

Yep we did but when we put them back together one of the rivets we put in didn’t fit right so had to re do that resulting in the accident!

You may be able to get away with a touch up pen and then a polish to cover up the scratch. I'm no painter so someone else may have a better solution. Hopefully you won't have to paint it all again.

Thanks for the comment mate! Yep it’s a tough one especially with how long it took to paint. Like you say a touch up pen might be our best option or we might have a crack at re spraying it depending on how we get on!

You must have spent ages masking off the chequer plate on the wings before painting... then you take them off while re-fitting. :-) and bork the paint in the process. :-) I'm saying nothing, but I know how sensible it is to take EVERYTHING off before paint.
I also know how sensible it is to re-fit all the body-work in just primer - take it off, do your prep/clean/blasting/blah blah, then epoxy primer it all & refit "unpainted" - that way when you goof - and we all goof - you've only goofed on primer so nobody cares, including you. :-) Once it's all re-fitted, do your posh filler work, re-prime, paint, blah blah - less stress. :-) This ^ is also a great Advert for lazy-tongs rivetters - buy one. Them squeezy guns are a waste of space.

Yep, we learned the hard way with our riveter gun! Thank you for all the advice!
