I am new to art journaling. I have always been afraid to do art my entire life, fearing that people would see it, and judge. I never felt good enough. My son passed away very suddenly and tragically a year ago. He wasn't only child. He was 31, and left behind a fiance and an 18 month old baby boy. I was angry and suicidal in my grief. I somehow found Christi Tomlinson on pinterest, among many other AWESOME artists. I learned that I COULD do art, without the fear of judgement. I started, and my first collage/paintings were gruesome, and filled with my horrific grief. I cried through the first month, but kept going. Sometimes no words were needed, the " art" spoke loud and clear. That was a year ago. My art has saved me. I really believe that art saves. And the artist like you, dina, who are so accessible and remind us that perfection is not the point. And, you in particular got me to recently try my first try at faces. And, you are absolutely wonderfully right!!!!!!! To watch a face come to life on your page is amazing and transforming. If I can do this, albeit still a bit primitive, I can do anything. I am making art everyday, making mistakes, and letting them be positive. Hard for me in the past....not now!!!!!! You have no idea what a big part you have played in my recovery. My loss was unbearable. But I am finding my joy again, and art is my vehicle. You and the other artist out there are my guides through the darkness. I apologize for this wordy comment. But I wanted to let you know how you touched my life so positively. And I can only imagine how many more lives you have impacted with your honest, humble, and joyous art. Thank you for being a light in the world.

I'm sorry you lost your son. Grief is such a terrible thing. I'm glad you turned to art. I know life is different now you are very brave for sharing your story and you are an inspiration to help others move forward

Your video certainly resonates with this art teacher! I am so happy that you overcame the doubts...we all have them. And no matter how much experience we have we all make ugly art. I insist that my students date and save their "ugly" art because when they look back, they can see their progress...and sometimes they can salvage those former works that they intended to trash.

I have to say this is one of my favorite videos that you have made. I love art journaling! When covid first started, almost 4 years ago now I got into art journaling (and also collage). They were something I had wanted to try but I was heavy into scrapbooking and card making and I didn't want to invest my time and money into something new. Now, I can't imagine not doing art journaling...I am having a blast! I will never turn back...haha I still do a little scrapbooking but it's mostly for family now. Thanks so much Dina. I love your art journals. 🥰

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I loved this video! I enjoy Dina's work. I am learning to relax with my art. I started as a knitter, then card-maker, then scrapbooker, now art journalist. I use my art and creativity to detach from the stress of my job and allow myself to be free to feel unfiltered with color, paper, paint, etc. Thanks for the inspiration! Sharlene

I hear you about the I can't, so I watched your video on faces and I drew two faces yesterday. Christmas I am proud of them. They are not perfect but I am so proud that I finally took my pencil to paper and drew a shape. I was going for oval but ended up roundish oval, I went with it, and finished it. Then I tried again, I felt like everything around me totally disappeared and I was in a zone. I felt so accomplished. So thank you so very much. Signed colorista55

This is a truly inspiring video. Love how down to earth you are, how you say it how it is, or isn't.
You're right, art journals are personal works of art of our innermost expressions and feelings.
I love your work, truly. Thank you for being you xx

It's awesome to me that art journaling is a "trend" I've been creating, what I called, art books for most of my life. Now I just wish I didn't throw away so many as I got older. Thank you for sharing. I hope this "new trend" never goes away too.

March 2015 when this was posted. I was doing scrapbooking then...and a lot of it and learning. Three years later I’m trying to figure out mixed media art. At the almost age of 68. But I’ve written since a child. So now before I take flight from this earth to my Heavenly home, I wanna make art FOR ME! No children so anything left behind will be trashed by someone. So this is for me. Oh had I known this years ago! ❤️

My love of art is photography. I have at least a million photos. Started out like Ansel Adams. After my husband died in 1999, I met my now BFF who is a birder. We'd walk the Redwoods and I started taking bird photos since they can really be a challenge. My bucket list is to get into all 50 states. I've been into cardmaking since 1999. Now want to start a journal incorporating bird photos from all the states that I can. I know about 15 states I won't have bird photos but scenery will have to do. I'll finish my 50 next month!! I'm not really sure how I'm actually going to incorporate my photography yet but I'm currently working on the backgrounds in the journal. My project may end up in 2-3 journals. I mostly work with Dylusions sprays and paints but I love your colors as well so I'll have to mix them together thru out my mixed media. Thanks for the inspirations!!

Wow, you are so inspiring and encouraging! Thanks so much for sharing yourself, your thoughts and inspirations to make art. I too am new to art journaling and am thankful for artists like you who teach and inspire the rest of us who also want to be artists. I love your "if I can do it, anyone can" philosophy and that art journaling doesn't have to be great... just do it. I am learning so much from these little TH-cam videos and videos from Northlight and Interweave. My heart just breaks for the lady who commented about the death of her son... I can't begin to imagine her pain and sorrow and am so impressed that you and art helped her! Thanks again and keep inspiring and sharing!

Your Awesome! My inspiration is from you. I am totally an 80's child. I mean bad, so dorky.😆 I recently decided to do a promt journal for every year of my life and what I enjoyed, especially the music and how I felt and I love to recollect things my goofy ass was doing. lol Like listening to depeche mode, dressing alternatively and driving to punkin donuts in Chicago to go to these gothic clubs and dancing. I was an idiot and I miss it so much. Memories like that make me feel and when I can feel , it comes out in my art. Thanks for story. Your so cool!

Dina, I really enjoyed what you have to say and how you say it.
I share a great many of your beliefs. What a blessing to our world that you have made your way to the top of this field so you can share your enthusiasm, skill, generosity, and humbleness with others.
I SO appreciate your thoughts on self teaching and on learning by doing and by taking classes etc. and that we can learn from our students.
With all of the information out in the world, we could give ourselves a master level education if we are just willing to do it, the self discipline to stick to it and not let anything stand in our way. That and connecting with other artists to share our enthusiasm and we have all we need to flourish.
I love your messages, and your "realness". May you always be blessed with success and abundance.
    Anastasia

Love this, I bought a concertina book recently, which is completely full of blank pages ... where to begin! A good way to express yourself and it keeps all drawings nicely and neatly together. The only issue now is deciding what to fill it with. Great interview, and some good points to remember when the self doubt kicks in :).

I liked your talk , you look very friendly :) When I make something first of all it must give me fun, but than there is another thing that I cant give up on....every single thing I make must have a purpose. In scrapbooking I can use almost every medium or background I feel too , I like to bring the mood from the picture in my background. And (tadaaa) , my children have something out of it. Even when I make a artjournal page for a video, when I am done taking pictures, I add my photos onto it. Instead of a lot of artjournals, I have many loose pages, which I use in project life albums to cheer them up. The only journal I keep as is, is my "inspired by "journal. I use the work from famous and less famous painters as a moodboard. Perhaps some day it will inspire my children to look them up and admire their great paintings and art when they read their names in my journal....I cant draw , and accept it, no time to waste and learn it, because it just dont bring fun to me. People like myself can doodle :) have a great weekend, TFS

I really enjoyed this video. I struggle with adding words to my journaling because I try to make viewing the page convey something to the viewer, as if the thing you feel from looking at my page says it all. I also struggle with self criticism but I'm glad to know I'm not alone.
