This is a great overview of the possibilities and variety of fun you can have with art journaling. I grew up like many people thinking that because I couldn’t draw things out of my mind I was not an “artist”. I was very creative with fiber and fabrics but stayed away from paints, etc. Then in my later years I was introduced to art journaling and it has opened a whole new world of creativity and enjoyment! And thanks to the wonderful TH-cam artists who share so generously I have learned so much and am amazed at what I can do and how much joy it gives me. And at age 81 I can say for sure “it is never too late”!
One note of advice for those just starting: don’t start with mixed media journals that have the metal spirals in them like I did when I didn’t know any better. I found them very frustrating when doing an open two page spread.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I would love to see videos about how you create your backgrounds!

I started bullet journaling years ago. This past Christmas I decided to start art journaling. I bought some stickers and just worked them into my writing journal. I then started collecting old books and magazine to cut pictures out of. I also started collecting trade journals from my workplace and other unloved paper destined for the trash. I now have made three junk journals I bound and decorated on my own. I gave two as gifts already. I am now experimenting with drawing using a glass dip pen and bottled inks. I have really taken to this craft, it has absolutely enriched my life and brought me a lot of joy. I love that my creations can so easily become gifts (i love to randomly give little gifts, but i will probably forget your birthday).
That is all so how it happens. You keep experimenting and see what’s next!
@@meganquinlanstudio105 thank you for the inspiration 🩷
I would love to see a video on backgrounds. Your work is amazing!! #goals

Thank you for your videos, I can't wait for your how to videos, I'm already looking around for art journal supply's to make my books
Thank you so much for the great explanation of all the types of art journals. By the way your work is amazing and inspiring to me.
Thank you, found this really helpful being a beginner 💕
Lovely art journals. I enjoyed your creativity. It’s fascinating to see what one creates. ❤😊
Your journals are so beautiful. I also love the work of Dan Eldon. Thank you for the tutorial and inspiration ❤❤
Love the tiny watercolor journal
So many creative ways! ✂️📘☀️
What a wonderfully informative and inspiring video. Thank you!
This is the best most creative video on creating journals I have seen! I’m so excited to have found you! ❤️
Gorgeous journals! So much creativity and inspiration. I love how all your backgrounds in the smaller ones coordinate colorwise. Loving your videos. Thank you.
So much inspiration and lots of reminders of things I used to do and, for some reason, got away from. Ready to try them all again! Thanks for the great videos.
Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this! I have wanted to try different journaling but not known where to start. I just found your page in my feed. Awesome!!
Thanks Megan. Great video. I think I need to make another JIYA journal. Very inspiring.
this is so beautiful😮
New subbie here. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing all your journals. I just discovered art journaling about a year ago and have had so much fun with it ever since. Thank you for sharing
Thank you. I'm not so sure I buy the "there are no rules" statement many teachers espouse. I know this is a beginner video, but there ARE artistic principles that make art-making more satisfying, like the rule of three, incorporating texture, or a focal point for interest. This, to me, is where teachers lose me, because principles are treated like taboos or restrictions, and no one goes there. When I combine them with play and intuition, I find them to be universal shortcuts.
Amazing journals ❤
Thank you so much for sharing your journals, the different ways of art journaling, showing your Beautiful and inspiring journals.
Your video just showed up and I enjoyed it very much! I do and make junk journals, and would Love to overcome my own critics
You have a new subbie here 🥰
I love these!
Wow! So inspirational you are VERY ENCOURAGING. THANK YOU.
I loved this video. You always inspire me. I’ve been painting a lot lately. I want to get back into my art journaling more. I need to start painting in them!
Excellent, concise video, thank you. Watching you create some backgrounds would be wonderful, as yours are stunning even without the work you then do on top of them.
Hi from South. Africa ❤ I got so Much art Insiration from you 😊 thank you
Thanks for sharing, So much inspiration, kinda lost my mojo, but now I have so many ideas!Yay 😍
Thank you for this video. I love looking at your journals and getting inspiration. I also want to write more, and I've been learning about junk journaling. Art journals feel more like a personal thing because you are working with feelings and emotions in art and writing. I also love the smaller size of the journals you made.
Thank you for another great video. Over the past year (or more) I have been influenced by your work and collected several of your stencils and stamps. I guess that makes you an influencer!
I'm a long form person who likes to learn new things via videos. Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, etc., are so short that, to me, they are just ads, & I barely look at them anymore. Not that there's anything wrong with earning a living but, like so many things, those platforms seem to have gone too far. This was a great overview & inspiration to try art journaling. I would like to see you do a start to finish page, one that isn't all sped up like those others I mentioned. I especially liked the work you did in the Dina Wakely kraft journal, although they were all so FAB, & I look forward to seeing more!
Thanks for the discovery of Dan Eldon! Had never heard of him.
Fab video ❤Tfs, Laura
Your journals are like a Rumpus Room of color and shapes. Thank you.
Soooooo inspiring!!!! I get so overwhelmed with supplies and options I end up not doing it 😅 I hope by the end of the day I end up actually going for it…
Love your work!!!
No matter the style or techniques, everything you do is absolutely amazing 😍😍 thank you for sharing all the information and inspiration!
Ooh, such a great video. I've wanted to do this forever, but never really know where to start. I like the tips you gave. I think junk journaling is more for me. I did a page years ago, liked it but then never did it again. This video just showed up in my feed, which I'm thinking is a good thing. Thanks for sharing! Oh, and I subscribed since you mentioned you'd be doing more about backgrounds.
Oh my gosh Meg I just found you and you have so inspired me! I am an artist, with a studio, but the studio is for everyone else...it's a business where I conduct paint nights, art parties and kids classes. I do everything for my studio for the benefit of others, which I love, but journaling is something that has been tugging at my soul for YEARS. I have so many empty, sad journals just hoping to be used to create daily art. This has really got me in the mood to start. I need to do this. Going to watch all your videos. LOVE.
Do some just you days in your journals. It will enrich your daily work!
I really wish there were more videos like this one here that you created for us. This is one of the most clear explained videos about our journaling. I’m a semi-beginner to our journaling and I say that because I’ve always been into scrapbooking in collaging. But number on the consistent basis or never really with, a journaling purpose. And I’ve really been getting into it and watching so many videos but you did such a great job in identifying the various types of art journaling. And you are giving me so many ideas so that I can just get started and start playing.I stumbled across your TH-cam channel and I’m so happy I did
I love your art journaling! Thx for sharing. Steph
This video came up in my New To You tab. New subscriber!❤
Thank you for your clear explanations, I haven't started yet, but I definitely have a mind to do something but I have been put off because I just do not journal! Once again, thank you.
21:03 ohhh I LOVE that spread!
Thank you so much for this video
Fun to see your journals Megan. You have a very strong style throughout, evident even when showing the different types. Your dylusions journals, hand made and other purchased ones are very similar. If you look thru my journals you might think that a different artist did each one. I am still searching for my style.
I Love your approach, I kind of got to a point to where I looked at my Art journal and went "why am I doing this" and then watching your video reminded me.. so thanks 😊 I think we all go through a period of needing refreshed, I will look for the books by Dan Eldon. I am getting older and learning to appreciate history and peoples stories so much more. I appreciate what you do, thank you so much.
Wowza! This was great. I've already checked out your Etsy shop. Its going to be hard to make the selection :) Thank you for the video. You are just as generous with your knowledge as your talent.
You've helped me so much!
First of all, your journals are stunning. I'm so inspired by all of your book designs and pages. TYSM for sharing! I'd love to see more... maybe a flip through video for each one??
But you've helped me bc I've been making journals and swapping back and forth with a friend, and just now realized that she's a classic junk journaler using antique ephemera, her sewing machine, buttons, etc, while I'm a true art journaler using paints, mixed media collage from the outdoors, incorporating would-garbage papers, and my writing.
It's so obvious which pages are hers and which are mine. Hers are assembled so perfectly and beautifully, usually sepia or black and white with perfect edges and finishings. While mine are paint covered, bright, often messy. Though we're rubbing off on each other. I'm finishing my work, and learning to take care in my edges and framing. While she's starting to incorporate colors, and is adding in words.
This is so helpful! Your examples are not only beautiful but really helps to clarify what exactly art journaling is. I have been wanting to try it but had no idea what it really was.
I have been dabbling in art journaling with no direction and your video has inspired me to create some journals that will be more of what I have been trying to do! I think they will be really cool and I’m so excited to get started now with all your information. Thank you!🎨✂️✍🏼📕📙📚🖍️
I loved seeing your different journals! I deefinitely agree that you don't have to draw to be artistic, there are so many other ways to create art, including journaling.
This is definitely 💯 the best video introducing first of all the inspiring book by Dan Eldon. My mind was blown away!
Secondly, what/how/we can use different subjects of ephemera to compile our journals. Like most people, Im always interested to see the inside of an artist's studio as well. I'm new to your channel Megan and loving it!🎉😅. Denmark 🇩🇰 .
Very motivating!
Woow your art journal looks really, really pretty! I found it very inspiring to watch 😊
thank you!
Thanks for sharing. Your art & creativity is very inspiring but also intimidating. Comparison and the expectation of perfection is a spirit killer and makes for lack of creativity! I think most artist and creative people do this and we need to get over it and be ourselves!
What a treat❤your book is exquisite 😊truly
Thank you so much!
I love art journaling
Oh I love that spinner page 😃
Hello Megan I am new to your channel, I've loved every second, thanks for this inspiring way of making it easy. and your enchanting way of presenting. Love and Light from Amsterdam, Holland ✨
Thank you and Welcome!
Ooo, your video just popped up in my feed & YAY…you’ve sparked my return to art journaling! Great excuse to buy a new sketchbook 😉 (is there anything better than a fresh batch of blank paper?) Your journals are beautiful, thanks for the inspiration!! ✨
new Subscriber. Love your journals!! Thanks for the great tips and ideas … very inspirational 😍 looking forward to more of your videos. 😊 ♥ 🌹 Big Like thumbs up
All of those journals are gorgeous...are you possibly going to show how you made your journals? or how you would journal a page? I love them. I like when you said '...for people who don't have a lot to write': yes, that's me! It always seemed that people who had these cool journals had tonnes of thing to say and did a lot of things...which I don't lol...I love to be at home with my paper and inks. Just wanted to say thanks, I've subscribed and really looking foward to exploring your channel. Cynthia x
PLEASE…. Do more videos on how to art junk journal…..❤❤❤😊
Hi. I just came across your channel. You have some fabulous ideas in your journals that I haven't come across so I'm really looking forward to more 'how to' videos especially for cut outs. You forgot to mention spiral bound journals 🙃 I love mine.
I did! I realized I forgot to share my strathmore spiral journals.😅
That was quite the rabbit hole I went down watching your video earlier. At the point you were introducing Dan Eldon’s books, I ended up watching the movie The Journey is the Destination on Plex-tv. Very sad end to such a creative life.
I started around 10 years ago. For newbies (my favorites) Christy Tomlinson (doesn't post anymore since she started the planner society) and Shannon Green.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING! ✨❇💖❇✨
Well I had never heard of this till this video and now I'm very interested. 😂
Art librarian here. LOVE that Dan Eldon book. I’ve seen a lot of art books over the years and that one still sticks out to me.
It’s such a classic!
nice explanation. Might I ask where I would find the description box mentioned.
Please explain how the elastic closure on the large and small journals are attached. Great video!
They come with the journal.
❤ it! What is your recommendation for the decoupaged medium? I have used mod podge but it stayed tacky after drying. Thank you.
"No rules"! So true.
Love your video… I’ve been getting into art junk journaling….. I want that denim art journal u have in this video…please let me know where I can get it or order it from…. ❤❤❤❤😊
Ranger ink- Dina Wakley Mixed Media Journal
Besides Dan Eldon, look up the journals of Peter Beard. He was doing the same thing Dan was doing many years earlier. Both wonderful sources of inspiration.👍
Yes I’m a big Peter Beard fan too. He was obsessed with Karen Blixen who I also am fascinated with. 😊
Thank you!
Thank you for this great tutorial! Beautiful journals! What type of glue do you use for gluing watercolour paper down on a page? I find it hard to glue watercolour paper cut outs properly. Thank you!
I do too. I just use UHU sticks. But hold it down for a minute or so 😉
@@meganquinlanstudio105, thank you!!
So the actual ART is mostly representing your words vs a written journal. Very nice. I’m artsy, but have long been used to just written word journaling. I guess I feel like I’d need to have access to : pens, markers, glue, magazines, etc. - which wouldn’t necessarily be expensive, I guess ?
Start with what you have.
Beautiful journals. Sparked a lot of ideas. Love the media journal-- followed your ideas in comments but it looks like they are nowhere to be found!!
Long gone.
