- The week starts off smoothly enough, as I wander south to Ajo, Arizona, and experience Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Colorful, lush, deserts, full of life. Warm weather, palm trees, and sunlight. Then, as I travel east, I experience a severe issue with the Jeep and ride a trailer back to Prescott.

HI Chris. I normally don't comment on videos but your first few moments rang so true for me. I saw the Arizona desert for the first time in my late 20s. I was expecting a barren landscape of sand dunes.. I was pleasantly surprised. One of the biggest things I remember was all the roads leading off to places unknown. Unfortunately I had rented a sedan and couldn't explore. I am living vicariously through you. Keep up the great work you are doing and have fun in your adventures. A big thanks to you.

I appreciate the bit of raw emotion when the death wobble hit your Jeep, sometimes things go bad and its good to express it and not bottle it up! Glad things eventually worked out
Been in countless deserts around the world over thirty years in the military...not one is the same and for the most part the people have been amazing (not you Mr. Taliban ;-)...) And your coffee making scenes NEVER get old!! Keep on getting out there. and Be safe.

Though it certainly wasn't great for you, that it added a deeper layer of drama than we're used to on this channel, plus that you edited it together into the overall narrative so skillfully, and with the usual great shots and dialog and subdued humor, this was actually one of your best videos so far. It sucks that you had to go through all that, but you ran a clinic on how to make the most of it, by making this video and rolling with the punches. That says a whole lot about character, and your skills, and it is all good things.
Chris you really captured the quiet beauty the desert secretly holds , few take time to notice. The desert surely gives such crisp colors sometimes, it's awesome ! Beautiful,. Ha ha, that dog knew you were feeling down, and came to keep you company I think. And what a good friend Mike is ! True friend show up ! 😎

I agree with most comments about re-working your JK. JL's have a whole new set of issues and JK's are still pricey at best. With so many good parts and shops a re-work makes sense. Sorry for your bad week, but it is part of the adventure. Plan for it.

Looking at the prices of used Jeeps with the same amount of miles you have still going for 20K, and of course new Rubicons going for 55K, I think you should take your Jeep that is already lifted and modded the way you like back up the Summit jeep and tell them to replace all worn suspension components, track bars, shocks, give the engine a tune up with new spark plugs, flush the coolant, new belts, coolant hoses if needed etc. Way way cheaper than any other option.
I agree that's all wear and tear stuff and at that mileage with that severe duty use all makes brands and models will see those issues. Definitely not a reliability problem.
This is what I was thinking as well. You like to be prepared so fix everything & hit the road & trails with better peace of mind!
I agree, a small, easily rectified issue, can mushroom into a showstopper. I've gotten into the habit of crawling under the Jeep every morning when overlanding. Just to check bolts, hoses, lines etc.
Stay mild on your 2 tracks trekking. The whole Jeep axels are under engineered/built.
Along with other suspension components. Not knocking jeeps, they just are not built for real harsh terrain.
Something a lot of Jeepers find out in awkward remote situations.
@@cliffmorgan31 I think the Rubicon's Dana 44s are probably the best stock axle out there. Maybe the G-wagon but who could afford those? How many stock vehicles can do the Rubicon or King of the Hammers? Of course those that really want to tackle crazy stuff would need to upgrade, but that is the same for all vehicles. Just from my observation, obviously a regional one, you don't see too many vehicles other than Jeep's tackling the really difficult terrain. In Oz it is of course the opposite.
Where , and how, I wheel an unreliable vehicle could easily be a death sentence.

Hi Chris, I am a lone traveller like you and I camp/ offroad in the southwest desert. I had a 2001 Wrangler Sport with 80,000 miles. I struggled with death wobble for almost a year and spent so much trying to get it fixed and it never really was right. I also started having other issues crop up that were becoming more and more costly. After the death wobble, I lost faith in my Jeep. I became so worried about something else breaking and being far away from civilization that I stopped going on trips, which really bothered me. I debated on just taking it to a shop and really having it redone and totally fixed, but given its age and cost of doing all the work, it didn't seem worth it. I just felt no matter what I did, I was still going to worry about it. Plus, I dont have deep pockets, and cant do many repairs myself. While there are a few shops here in Los Angeles that do work on Jeeps, they are very costly. I have learned that many mechanics dont really have the abilities to work on modified Jeeps and some of the shops that do are not exactly...trustworthy. ( If anyone has any recommendations for shops here I would love to hear them)
For me, getting a newer Jeep was the better way to go. ( 2016 Willys Wheeler) While it was more than the cost of getting the old one repaired, the piece of mind that I have a reliable vehicle has made a world of difference and now I go on trips with confidence. But, I am back at stock again, so thats a thing to deal with.
Rubicons are another beast altogether and I so wish I had one, but they are out of my budget for now.
I think Moparmagas' advice is sound. Since you have found Summit, which seems like a very competent shop, you may indeed be well served having them really going over it and getting everything right. I think the key is either being able to do the repairs yourself or taking it to someone you trust. As he says, you have it the way you need it and you still have lots of miles left on it.
Its a tough spot to be in. Either way there is going to be some costs and pluses/ minuses to each choice.

Watching through some of your videos from last year. I’m not a Jeep guy, I drive a 4runner, but man your Jeep is and has always been sharp looking. Love the somewhat stock look but the lift and stance and everything else just works!
Nice, gotta love Yota. 4runners and Tacomas can do what jeeps can for the most part but with far more reliability so you made the right choice.

I had a 6.2 LS / 6L80 swap done in my 09 JKU at about 122k and love it. Drives better than it did when it was new. Much cheaper than a new JKU and I know the history of mine (and it's still paid off). Thanks for another video adding to my "I need to go there" list :)

Sorry to hear you had problems. That's something I have seen before and you are correct in thinking it happen because of the death wobble.
Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument - That looks like another place to add to my list of camping adventures. Thank you for the great video tour. Summit Off Road to the rescue.. The sound seems to be a relay chattering, check for loose connections, ground wires loose, frayed or broken. Disconnect the battery, it will stop the buzzing sound, then reconnect and if it comes back check to see what item is causing the voltage draw then trace down the wire to see if it is hot to the touch, burnt or broken.

I have an old cj without track bars or sway bars. Problem solved lol. I Enjoy your videos man.
I have never owned a vehicle with that kind of pop-top roof myself, but have seen other people with them. A great deal of them have an elastic type rope around the canvas so that when the top is lowered it pulls the canvas inward and prevents it from getting caught between the sides of the vehicle and the pop-top shell roof. I noticed you tucking yours in and thought that this may assist you. I enjoyed your video, thank you...

You should have a look at a regular cab / short wheel base half ton truck for your next overland vehicle. They are truly very similar in size on the outside and offer much more space on the inside. They also have much higher capabilities and are built to last longer, yet cost much less then the Jeep Rubicon.

Jeep on! the weakness in any vehicle will reveal itself for replacement in time. upgrade the part as you've done and move on! :)
You'll be good, engine most likely needs a tune-up as you've put a lot of miles in dirty environments with little maintenance. I hope Summit checked these two areas otherwise I would not be surprised if the death wobble comes back: 1) track bar frame side mount - check to see if the hole is elongated... if so death wobble will be back. 2) check your ball joints... when you were shaking the front of your Jeep it sure looked like the passenger side balljoint was toast.

Chris, I thought the opening scenes with all those thorns led up to the cactus in the side wall of the tire causing some damage.I guess you got lucky on that one. I asked this before but didn`t get an answer , how do you air up off road?
I think your Jeep has a lot of life left in it, Moparmaga is right, spend some money on it now and you`ll have a reliable vehicle again.
My 2011 MB G55 has 130000 miles on it and I haven't even started on my adventure yet. I will set out in 2021 on a trip somewhat like yours and Im building my G in preparation. It will probably have 150000 by then, but I am buying a used VW Golf Diesel to help keep the miles down on the G.

I believe the noise your hearing is part of your hvac system, coolant gurgle. Next time you notice it, turn key to on position(RUN/not start) and switch your heater controls from the opposite that they are at(if on heat turn to A/C, if on A/C turn to heat) notice any change? There might be air in your coolant system which is not good as it causes cavitation which leads to holes in aluminum parts of the engine get a coolant flush done.

Sorry for your problems. It's nice that you found a garage that you can trust. I've watched several of your videos and it makes me wonder why you don't have a winch? A winch certainly would not have helped you in this case. But you are often in very remote areas and almost always alone. I'm sure you must have thought about it. I do realize that they are expensive and heavy. Care to share your thoughts?
He needs a ARB Brake booster mounted Air compressor (since he has limited interior space) for the amount of times he’s airing his tires down then having drive at speed on blacktop to find civilization again to air up?
a china winch is $300,with dyneema,, .if it saves you once,it paid for its self/..
He really needs at least a pair of $60 X-Bull Recovery boards. It's a major oversight on his part. I suspect it's because he's been convinced he needs to spend $300 on Maxtrax & I can see why that would stop anybody.

been there done that 107 degrees by memorial day, and don't get me started on the dust storms
@@MrPj47 I live here. 107 is not even considered that hot here. We have many weeks of 110-118. Dust storms are harmless, really, unless you are driving and can't see anything.
