  • Thanks for watching.
Hope you enjoyed this clip on the sights and sounds of three different
locomotive builders. GE, ALCO, and EMD's turbo and non-turbo.
The sweet, throbbing sounds of the GE and ALCO are now practically a
thing of the past, except some survivors on short lines or regional.
Everyone has their favorite. Which one is yours?
These clips were filmed with a verity of different cameras over the years, Kodak Super 8mm Sound movie, VHS, a nd Digital 8 camcorders

ALCO for the smoke, GE for chugging, and EMD for the roar.

This is the perfect summary. They're all equally great but for different reasons, although to be honest I'm still quite partial to EMDs myself, turbo ones in particular.

I consider ALCO & GE the same since GE took over ALCO.The 7FDL's & 7HDL's were originally based on the 251's after all.
I prefer the GE units because of tractive effort and dynamic braking.I like the EMD units because one never has to worry about catching on fire.

Hard to choose but I've always loved the sound of unturboed EMD 567s like those you find in the GP9s. Music to my ears. EMD 645s turboed or not come very close behind as do the old school GE chugs.

I've always loved the sound of ALCO 251's working a heavy coal or iron ore drag, and a Roots-blown 567 switching.
Especially when those 567's throttle down!
About the only contender missing is that unique sound of those opposed piston Fairbanks Morse units.

In comparison the GE's and Alco's sound like they're about ready to fall apart.

Love the Alco/MLWs, will always be my favorites. The non-turbocharged EMDs sounded different to me. Not that I’ve never heard them before, maybe it’s the environment they were recorded in. BTW thanks for the runby of the NSM SDs. I’ve been looking for some good shots showing the side profile for modeling.

It has to be the CP MLW M630's and M636's from the 70's and 80's just like the Cartier units in this video. That chug and the black smoke is unmatched. My 1st ever cab ride aboard CP #4707 at age 11 was one of the best rides of my life. They could out pull any EMD of the era and the ground shook as they went by. EMD's were more Cadillac, the MLW's were the blue collar lunch box units ready to go to work everyday.

All have special places in my memory and heart, still never have I wavered in my belief of the symphony of metal that was and is a GM EMD Turbo-charged 645 or 710. It is still the sound of wonder and power and adventure. Even today, I can still hear in my mind the sound of GM EMD's on the Alleghany Sub of the CSX on their knees pulling coal trains up by White Sulphur Springs, WV and on to the Allegheny Tunnels four miles further up the line. Sound of sounds! Sight of Sights!

Well, I think they all sound pretty great, I do like the throbbing GE/Alco, maybe just because that is such a different sound... My favorite catches because of great angles, and AMAZING paint schemes, were # 3 # 5 and # 7! I have always really liked the Chessie System, Southern Pacific, and Santa Fe schemes. I caught a Southern Pacific AC44CW a few days ago, if you want to check that video out, it's the newest one on my channel. Great video = )

My tops is the Alco, especially the C/M 636 then the EMD SD45, 20 cylinder beast of pure power, the C-36-7 is next. They all sound awesome In they’re own way, each has a unique personality, that has unfortunately been subdued with the modern engines with all the emission crap and mufflers. I definitely miss seeing and hearing the variety of the Santa Fe and SP of the 70’s 80’s and 90’s.
Thanks for your great films, a true joy to watch and keep the good times alive.
Funny how you take time for granted till they’re past…..
I’ve never was a big fan of the F40PH, they were so plain and so many around here in the 80-90’s they were replaced with GE P32BWH and they had a great look and sound now they’re gone and I kinda miss the F40.
    Great show! Thanks

Bestest sound ever is the SD45 in full tilt. That long drone as it cycled out 20 cylinders was so distinctive. a close second would be EMD non turbo's.
Most of the last MLW's, like the Cartier's always sounded more like GE's. the "true" Alco sound is the second group, the CP's. When Alco's sounded like the bolts on the pistons were a couple turns loose at the cam shaft.
The old U25-U30 series boats sounded so much better then later models. They were choppy as f**k when working hard.

Alko engines, Good old smokey! They have their own sound.. The good old classic GE chug! And that EMD roar!, The song of The Roots blower of the EMD 567, 2, or sounding like a distant tornado siren in the case of the 6:45 E3 turbocharged. Not sure about the 710 yet. I grew up with that good old GE chug, so the 7F DL and h series, even the gevo sound fantastic, so it's up there with the 567. Nothing quite like waking up to the good old thunder of a GE! So as far as which one is your favorite? That's a tough one, an EMD, it's kind of like a series 71 Detroit, it has a unique characteristic sound. The EMD 645, quite literally roars, it and a 567, sound very interesting when listening to their valve trains. Another note about a GE, they sure do growl. But I'll have to say, there's something nostalgic about the giant sound of an EMD 567. Thank you Mr Kettering.

I'll take GE for the win! The turbo whine and throbbing from an EMD is hard to beat and a smoky Alco units are a sight to see but IMO nothing beats the GE Chug in notch 8 and the spewing of black smoke.

I vote for CSXT/WM 6573. I was awakened by 6573 as she passed thru Morgantown West Virginia on her way to Fairmont, not long before she died. I lived across the Mon River from the B&O line, and she made a horrible/beautiful racket causing me to look out the window to see what was up. Never having seen a locomotive in WM livery, I hopped into the car and headed down to Fairmont to get some photos. I still have a digital copy of one photo. The rest being lost to a flooded basement. Anyway the WM is dead - Long Live the WM!!
