Locomotive exhaust means serious tonnage is being pulled. The healthy trees are on the right of way to the railroad diesel exhaust is fertilizer to trees and scrubs Let’s not forget there was exhaust in the steam engine era.

If you try to duplicate the fuel burnt to pulling power ratio, if you had all electric locomotives you still got to get the power from somewhere? If you got to have a product anywhere in the world and it has to come from another part of the world there will smoke behind it! No getting around it.

Would you rather see one or two diesel trucks for every boxcar on the highway? Or a car for every person on the road for every passenger on the train? Looks to me like the smoke is a better trade-off for efficient transportation. I guess newer locomotives might be better.
I grew up with the C&NW in.my backyard, walking the old creasoted ties with spilt tar in pools on a hot July day, dodging the old ALCO RS3s switching the yard, music to my ears and those memory making smells!
Those 4 cycle diesels smoke a lot more than the 2 cycle ones do. We had some old Alcos on the line were I worked years ago. At night, they would belch fire out the stack under a load.

These old engines need more air. Run the turbocharger faster. There's such a small power band on these it should be easy to clean these old engines up. We have the technology to determine proper air fuel ratios and injection timing.

NICE I would definitely want to see any one of these trains. at least your favorite shortline isn't getting govt funding to replace they're old locomotives. our govt says anything not ecofriendly sucks. trains are fairly ecofriendly more than semis anyway which I also like but that's beside the point trona will no longer have SP tunnel motors by 2025, but they are donating their Kodachrome sd40r to a museum which is nice still sad to see the tunnel motors go

Love those smoking Alcos.Years ago when I was Little kid and lived near the Maybrook line of the NYNH&H RR they were using Alco FA1 diesels.You could really see the black smoke when these diesels were starting off or when they were pulling hard up a grade.
Maybe if she tries riding Amtrak, e.g. the Coast Starlight, from Portland to LA and back - she just might turn into a train-nut! (I know I sure did. It’s about the only time I think visible soot is a good thing.)

I've seen UP newly restored 4014 Big Boy burn a cleaner stack than some of these diesels.

The first clip has the two loudest SD70MACs I’ve ever heard. Also, the two clips from 8:40-10:05 with the SD40-2 and SD60 leader are pretty loud too
10:05 is more like an SD60 not a SD40-2
8:40 is a SD40-2
10:05is an HLCX ex UP SD60

That Conrail GE towards the beginning just had a flat out blown turbo
