    Actually all that black smoke is just airborne carbon particles ("soot")--harmless, except on toast. It's due to an overly rich fuel-air mixture entering the cylinders before the turbo gets a chance to spool up and deliver the proper amt of air ("turbo lag"). Alco used Woodward Governor fuel controls--who also supplied fuel governors to early jet engines, though not the same kind!.

    • @dennisyoung4631

      “Does the Engine have Soot?”

    • @K8S450DR
      @K8S450DR 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Interesting info, but only small correction what about the soot - as long as I know, soot as itself actually is relatively harmless, but toxic and carcinogenetic substances produced during incomplete burning of diesel (f. e. aromatic hydrocarbons like benzoapyrene, benzene...) are caught on soot.

      Saw a guy recently videoing some railroad activity from a perforated-steel pedestian overpass. Locomotive just beneath overpass belched out a plume of black exhaust all over the guy's self-described brand new, $300., impossibly WHITE, white skinny jeans. Pretty sure he had a different opinion on the harmlessness of soot😆

    Locomotive exhaust means serious tonnage is being pulled.
    The healthy trees are on the right of way to the railroad diesel exhaust is fertilizer to trees and scrubs
    Let’s not forget there was exhaust in the steam engine era.

      If you try to duplicate the fuel burnt to pulling power ratio, if you had all electric locomotives you still got to get the power from somewhere? If you got to have a product anywhere in the world and it has to come from another part of the world there will smoke behind it! No getting around it.

  • @bkriegel95

    That Conrail GE towards the beginning just had a flat out blown turbo

    • @Henry5623
      @Henry5623 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Honestly I would just about bet money it didn't have a blown turbo but rather either a injector that was trying to stick or some oil that was getting past some piston rings and ultimately getting blown out into the exhaust manifold where it was igniting. I've seen U-boats do the same thing for the same reasons. I could argue that it could be some aging wearing valves allowing oil/unburnt diesel to make it's way into the manifold which would cause the same reaction. That said if a turbo is blown it'd be belching out thick black smoke/flames pretty much continuously. Not spitting out smoke/flames kind of intermittently like that ex Conrail C40-8W was doing.

    3:00 Granted, that train model is a bit older, so it's not that surprising it's blowing smoke

      Maybe if she tries riding Amtrak, e.g. the Coast Starlight, from Portland to LA and back - she just might turn into a train-nut!
      (I know I sure did. It’s about the only time I think visible soot is a good thing.)
