    Jessica, thank you so much. When you said that it isn't good to just power through when we're miserable, that it's good to use that energy instead to seek out a way to make something interesting and rewarding to us, it brought tears to my eyes. For decades I've tried to *push through* on so many things! The idea that this was making my brain associate those things with misery had never occurred to me. If I can instead use that sense of unhappiness to remind me to try to pull that task-somehow-into the joyful dance of my life, everything will improve. Thanks again!

    I just found adhd 2 years ago at age 36. After always feeling like I was failing at life. I got diagnosed. But now I can't get a doctor to perscribe. Hearing your struggle getting a new doc made me feel better I'm not alone

      I’m still procrastinating my high school graduation thank you letters to the people who gave me cards/money… it’s only been a year and a half. To be fair though, covid pushed my graduation ceremony back a few months soooo it didn’t fully feel like I graduated and ALSO I’m lazy and if anybody still cares about that then… sorry I guess 💀

    When she said "I have a rule that I don't force my brain to do something it doesn't want to, but I do try to find ways to make it want to" I felt that bc literally YESTERDAY I tried forcing myself to do geometry I didn't want to and ADHD paralysis'd my way thru the whole day
    Next time I'm gonna try strategies and stuff instead, I just wish my parents (who homeschool me) would support me like that cuz I could definitely use that advice lol
    The geometry is still not done but the tears have been cried 👍

      Maybe try telling them that as the people responsible for your education they should be open to educating themselves on the best way to maximize your potential and get the most out of it with the least frustration possible. Then direct them here to help them understand. You could send them links to the videos that you connect with most so they can see how best to give you the education I'm sure they want to see you receive. Good luck to you!

      @@lowercase_ash So much about ADHD is very frustrating! Keep watching videos to learn how to minimize your symptoms and continue to just subtly slip in bits of information as you go, just taking every opportunity you can find to just make small examples and observations. Hopefully it will help improve things over time!

      I watched a TH-cam ADD/ADHD where the presenter is going to take some tests to prove that her brain will not do math. She's one math class away from finishing college. She's failed the subject more than once. Sorry, I don't remember where I saw her.

      I didn't have my ADHD diagnosis until just over 2 months ago at age 29. I can't tell you how many times I sat at the kitchen table for hours with 15 minutes worth of homework that I helped other students finish before the class had even ended only to not have it done for class the next day.
      I didn't even consider ADHD a real possibility until I learned that I had immediate family that had been diagnosed with it 20-some years earlier. Parents that don't understand ADHD can be a big obstacle; whether they mean to or not no one can make you feel more ashamed of not achieving your potential (especially if you fall into the twice-exceptional category).
      My advice would be to introduce them to this channel. There are so many things here that I wish we had known while I was growing up.

    Yey! Congradulations!!! You deserve all the great things, you worked sooooo hard.
    I'm a 42 year old nurse, recently diagnosed with ADHD and I work in psychiatry with many patients with diagnosed ADHD. But I love it when I can see the signs and get them evaluated and see their life's change like it did for me. Your channel is a great support for me and to my English speaking patients I recommend to check out for the great advice, validation, strategies and it's at their own time.     You’re amazing! You have helped me speak about my own adhd as well. I used to be afraid to tell anyone.. especially telling anyone close to me I’m medicated also and doing cognitive behavioral therapy. The responses were lackluster and unsupportive. Thankyou for being a voice, leader, and I feel - a friend. I’ll buy your book no doubt!

    I cried like 3 times watching this. Thank you for sharing and for everything you do. ❤ I used to think everyone struggled like I do, and never could understand why I failed so hard while being smarter than most of my peers. I'm trying to get help and so far I got prescribed antidepressants which help a little but my ADHD is still so very present. It's embarrassing how forgetful I am. I'm in my 30s but have the memory of a 90 year old grandmom. Life is a struggle when you have ADHD.

    I missed the live….but I wanna say thanks for all you’ve done!! You literally allowed me to understand my so much more and put names to the emotions I’ve felt, and even got me thinking “hey…that sounds like me… I should probably get checked out….” Turns out, yep, ADHD + But thanks to all of this, I have understanding and I’m getting treatment with meds and therapy.     Hi, I haven’t even Gott close to finish watching but at the ~12:40 mark you talk about imposter syndrome. I understand that feeling very much as I have it often. But I thought, maybe, telling you something’s about me might help.
    I have found your videos incredibly helpful in providing insight and not only into myself, but also my patients. I am a Family Medicine Physician and our training was exceedingly neurotypical oriented. I thought I might be ADHD, but never really explored it because I was finding ways to cope that more or less worked (it took me a while I didn’t start Med School until I was 30) but watching your videos has helped develop the courage and compassion to explore this potential dx in myself. I decided to bring it up to my therapist this week, ironically before I could ask she asked me if I’d ever been dx with adhd. I’m like wow I haven’t let myself seriously consider it until the past month after watching your channel and she brings it up minutes before I do. I then tell her why I think it might be the case, and mention your channel, which she has not only seen but also finds it to be very helpful in understanding her pts. My mind was blown, I’m still in shock that she brought it up first, and that she knows of a you tuber I really like and find helpful. Anyway I thought it might be encouraging that a physician and counselor both watch your channel and find it to be very helpful. Thank you so much for what you do.

    I'm at the point where you're talking about being overwhelmed. One of my strategies has been to ask people to send me an email so I have both a reminder to think about and time (also less social pressure) to think about it.

    Today I was having a rough time focusing so of course I went to TH-cam. A math problem video showed up in my feed so I decided to go ahead and try and solve me. Took me a while, but I figured it out and was able to take that feeling and knock out the things I was struggling with.
    Doing something fun whenever you’re stuck can really help!

    My bf and I both have adhd, and we sometimes have trouble communicating with each other. It's especially difficult when we are both experiencing pretty intense RSD.
    We are both extremely people pleasing, and when we are in a particularly difficult conflict, end up at a stalemate of not wanting to hurt each others feelings, but feeling extremely guilty and upset and worried about the other person's emotions.
    How can we reset and resolve our communication issues after we've both shut down from our RSD?

      I suggest learning more interpersonal communication skills. Communication skills like that are useful whether you have ADHD or not. You could tweek the skills to better reflect your ADHD needs. I bet there's a TH-cam video about this. Because ADHD tends to run in families, there are lots of other people in your same situation, amongst family members.

    Thank you for your stream! Regarding your book that you intend to write, it would be really helpful to see how you go about goal setting for it. I struggle a lot with effective goal setting for my writing tasks. If I reach my daily goal I feel like it wasn't hard enough probably and if I don't I think I'm a failure... So what you said during the stream happens and I didn't even notice I started associating writing with misery when it used to be something I love.

    I just want to say thanks so much for making this channel. It's because of you that I decided to seek treatment. I just got officially diagnosed a week ago and since starting medication I feel so much better (other than the afternoon irritability). It really is amazing how much you can accomplish when your mind is still and quiet.

    I stumbled across this channel through the episode on ADHD from Anthony Padilla and I relate heavily to ADHD and also with the symptoms I answer often or very often to many of them in the self tests (which I'm aware are not a diagnostic tool).
    The research I'm doing keeps confirming things (although I know confirmation bias is a thing so I do have to question my thinking sometimes). Anyway, I have friends with the condition so I'm somewhat familiar in how it can present for some. I might discuss this with my therapist before going to a physiatrist. The process in the UK is pretty awful as the NHS in underfunded, particularly mental health support. Often you go to your doctor who refers you to mental health services before an ADHD assessment can even begin and the in-between bit is when the whole process falls apart or you do get a referral but the waiting time is 3-5 years plus.

    What are your thoughts on Learned Helplessness and how it relates to/is caused by ADHD?
    I only recently discovered Learned Helplessness from a Martin Seligman book, and it resonates hard with me. I am willing to bet a large portion people with ADHD suffer from it as well.

    You are really good at this. Thank you! Nice short and to the point. Very informative especially as you obviously have the perspective of being someone with ADHD and "get it". I can't remember the podcast or the doctor on it, but the doc said sadly, due to lack of research on ADHD, TikTok has some of the best life hacks and other practical ways to deal with ADHD. Therapy doesn't always teach tactile real-world examples. Take care!

    Pro-Tip: Adult 64 here, and I learned early on to Take written notes in meetings as my 'Fidget', and ask for water, coffee, or 'smoke-breaks' every hour or so. I don't smoke, but that would let me get out and fidget in other ways to counter my ADHD symptoms.

    I'm really excited for your book! I don't have a diagnosis for ADHD, but I relate so much to the things that you talk about on this channel. I find a lot of the information really helpful because even though I don't have a diagnosis, I have hope that there is a good explanation for my struggles and maybe even a way to manage my life better. My family has always had such high expectations for me, but I've always had trouble sticking with something long enough to be successful. I'm supposed to be the "golden child" that has so much potential, but I fail at things often and then feel super ashamed of it. I'm going through my 7th job change in about a year, and everything feels so chaotic and overwhelming. I feel like I'm behind in life because a lot of my peers seem so much more successful. I feel like I'm constantly struggling with imposter syndrome and feelings of not really belonging anywhere. I want so bad to find a purpose, but I just don't feel confident or adequate to do the things that I want to succeed at. Most of the time I give up before I even begin because I don't want to experience the feelings I get when I fail at something. I'm trying to push through it, but it hasn''t be easy. I would like to ask you what the process of getting a diagnosis is like because I think it would help. I just don't know how I would approach a doctor about this type of concern. It's almost like I feel shame around the idea of asking for a diagnosis because I grew up being told that there is no reason for me to need help, and that I just need to be more motivated or ambitious.

    Possible solution: Maybe creating a Q&A of common questions for people ask and posting it up can help prevent you from having to repeat answers and also would help others to help themselves when they are new to your channel to get some answers that don’t require you to be there for and save them time for having to watch loads of your videos to figure out the answer to maybe just 1 specific question they had.

    I often start watching, even when I don't have time, but then I can go thru my history and watch in full. Kinda like saving to watch later, but don't have that option on tv so history works better for me.

    2ndly... Please could u do more on adhd and autism combined? I'm going through the diagnosis now to get diagnosed with autism (when I was diagnosed with adhd they only gave one diagnosis and not more) and I'm realising some things I thought was the adhd might be autism. (like fidgeting might be my stim) But also that some things that are autism contradict adhd (like having one main focus/interest). So I'd love to hear more on this.

    I had a moment when Jessica was talking about the value of getting a diagnosis, and she used the word "sus" as a verb (a few seconds past 1:10:12). I had to send that to my son, who I know has played "Among Us".

    Can’t remember if I posted already but it seems like so many products or business ideas start out with someone doing something to help themselves fix something or fill a gap they notice personally and they share it with others and it snowballs. 😊 this is a great example!

    So proud of you and the book you are writing and have written. I remember a paper in a college English Comp class I had. We were doing Peer Reviews on our rough draft and I ended up with my professor. She looked at my rough draft, which happen to be nothing but notes on the paper I was writing, and she commented on it. She was like, what's this? And I said, "It's notes. Don't worry, I'll come up with something.". She replied, "That's what scares me." I got a B out of the class somehow.

    Hey I missed the live but just wanted to ask, in your video "How to know if you have ADHD", you say "Everyone struggles with these things sometimes, but not everyone has ADHD." Do you have any insight on when these struggles become too much to be neurotypical? In other words, when do "normal" ADHD-related struggles become "abnormal" enough for a diagnosis?

      People usually set out to get diagnosed when they realize their suffering is at a level they can't out-cope. One important determining factor is that the struggle must present in several different areas of life. It's a complex process and the only way to know is to talk to a good doctor - one that specialises in AD(H)D would be best! No one's symptomology is exactly the same, it takes some time and interviews and sometimes you go through different diagnoses before they figure out your personal combination.

    Came in late so looked st the beginning after the stream ended.
    I think its amazing that you're going to read the audiobook. I talked with some people I study with today about how boring it is to listen to a computer voice or a really bored reader, reading study material. I said the authors should do it, because they like the subject and are passionate about it. And they know which words to put a weight on.
    It would be so much easier to get the information in.
    Listening to a book with facts, and the reader is bored out of his mind, just makes it so hard to listen to and learn, and so hard to not feel bored myself.
    So it's great you're recording it yourself! I'll probably buy the book, it's mostly fact books I have a hard time reading. I bet yours will be very interesting for me. Hope it goes well, I'm really looking forward to it!

    Why do you think that people deny ADHD so much even though it's the most researched medical condition? Also, how do you deal with future tripping? I struggle with future tripping so much.

      @@KiaraEdgel let's say you don't do well on a math test, and you're real upset about that, you beat yourself up but you also worry that you're going to flunk college, lose your job, not have a house, etc. When you future trip, you assume that this one bad grade determines your future. Does that make sense?

    33:38 - "Guard your yes with your life". That kinda reminds me of a video i saw of Ali Abdaal where he said he learned a great philosophy of "Hell yeah. Or no." Basically, if someone comes to you and is like "Hey, do you want to do this thing?" If your reaction is something along the lines of "Ummm, maybe, sounds kinda cool." then you should say no. But if your response is "Hell yeah!" then you do it.

    Re: neurodivergence & chronic pain- I’m ADHD (and possibly ASD) and have fibromyalgia. I’ve noticed a lot of crossover between my fibro support groups and ADHD support groups on FB. There were frequently threads discussing this focused on disorders such as Ehlers-Danlos.

    I have used that contact cleaner and it works great, but you do have to follow the directions especially the steps regarding rinsing them thoroughly once clean.

    I used to use that contact solution. Thankfully the eye doctor talked me through it a few times. I liked watching the bubbles. Now I have daily contacts cause I forget to wear them and usually end up just going with my glasses.

    I love not forcing my brain to do things it doesn’t want to do but I still live with my parents and they know I have adhd obviously but they don’t fully understand so I get forced into doing a lot of things I don’t want to do so I am forced to push through any ideas?
