It's 2020 and somewhere deep in my heart, I wish Chrono Trigger Resurrection was able to be completed. I'm sure Nathan has moved on to bigger and better opportunities in life, but I will always respect him for being a true fan - someone willing to spend 3,000 + hours creating a classic true to nature and, at the time, willing to offer a demo of 10 different scenes to us fans at no cost.
i don't think this demo was ever finished or released to the public.

You mean you wish Square didn't ruin everything that was good after their EA buyout.
The prime example is the cease and desist vs this CT remake before cut and pasting the old rom to newer systems, when they could've embraced the fanbase as Half Life did w Counterstrike.
But then there's also the mishandling of NFL Gameday, the FF7 remake, FIFA, Star Wars Battlefront, etc.

Is there ANY possibility to have the full version (or at least the most recent build) slip in the web somewhere? Many early build and prototypes of commercialized games surfaced on the web at some point, yet this game still managed to elude the general audience. And it's a shame to let this wonderful work go to waste.
Hi Cloud, well it isnt that easy of a subject. Fisrt I work for Eidos , a Square Enix company, basically I work for Square Enix. And honestly we ( Nathan an I ) have other goals and we would not want to mess our careers over a court paper : ) Sory !

Luis Martins Since you work, in a sense, for Square Enix, couldnt you have them take a look at the buzz generated by this project (and still ongoing) and make them consider a remake in these veins? Perhaps even endorsing the continuation of the project and putting an official seal on it (and a price)?

They weren't releasing it for a profit. It would have been freeware. That means no lawsuit would have occurred, as no profits would have been gained from it and no C&D given.

You know what baffles me? Instead of the companies hiring them, they just shut down a fan site/project for showing their passion for a game they love so much. And these games are made with their own time and money, I mean, really? Yes, I know it's their property, but think of the possibilities that could be accomplished if you inspired these passionate people. *shake my head*
+ravager48 Yeh square seems to have a problem with the crono trigger series. FF12 was supposed to be a crono trigger game but got changed into FF12. On top of that FF3 and FF4 were remade on the ds in 3d. Then they got around to crono trigger and it was shameless port with no updates besides the damn touch screen. Then they shut down alot of crono trigger fan games that get any buzz but they have yet to shut down any Final Fantasy fan games. Pure bullshit.

Chrono Trigger DEFINITELY deserves a remake. But even if this were to be like, Chrono Trigger 2 or something, I would have been just as happy. Too bad its been canceled...

Square Enix released Chrono Trigger Limited Edition on Steam at 28 February 2018. Guess what? Bunch of negative reviews. If only they just continue this project years ago instead of porting from a mobile....

@@danisaia No, just Square. Squaresoft was the USA localization house. The developer based in Japan who created the games was known as just Square. Squaresoft took Square's games and translated them into english. Thy didn't make the games. The headquarters was Square in Japan who made all the decisions including shutting down fan remakes. There was also a third entity in Hawaii called Square USA whose only job was creating CGI movies.

I remember a time when games were about entertainment first, and money second.
They should have not only given this the green light, but offered whatever aid might have been required to make this remake happen.
I used to be a squaresoft fan, but they set some terrible precedents with games since they went all 'enix' 'n shit, and naturally their involvement in killing CT resurrection doesn't help my opinion of them much.
It honestly hurts my heart and makes my eyes well with tears to see such a beautiful thing just scrapped. I mean seriously, I played chrono trigger when it came out and many playthroughs since then. I, along with maybe millions more, (at least a million), have been siting for a true Chrono Trigger sequel. Let's be honest, Chrono Cross was nothing special, not like the Trigger. WE NEED A SEQUEL OR A SUPER-QUALITY REMAKE FOR SUCH A LANDMARK RPG!!! What happened to the golden days of RPGs made by Square? Square-Enix happened, and without top-notch competition between companies they went soft and just don't seem as ambitious. Turned into just another game company, not the Supreme Ruler of RPGs they once were... Gonna go cry myself to sleep now....

I like how it totally looks like a ps2 game
It was obviously built on a PS2 dev kit or emulator... No way that would come close to running on a N64. Think about it... Even though the N64 was capable of running games at 640x480 (the obvious resolution of the CTR demo), hardly any games ever used that resolution. Most games ran at 320x240 and barley ran at 20fps at that! This demo is running at 640x480 has decent draw distances with high poly count characters (for a ps2 game) and is running at at least a solid 30fps. Think of Super Mario 64 or Golden Eye 64... both ran at 320x240 and Golden eye barely ran at 20fps and it looked like crap compared to this demo... I even wonder if the PS2 could handle this demo. Think about Dragon Quest VIII... It looks very similar to this demo but the characters in that game had 2D textures for faces... This demo had fully rendered 3D faces! So it technically looked even better then DQ8! And made by only 3 or 5 people?!?! Come on... It was probably done on a PC and made to look like it was running on a Square Engine for a console... The programming talent to find the rendering efficiencies to have that game run on even a PS2 would be doubtful.. but not impossible. N64? Impossible.
This game looks awesome. I can't believe that Square would shut this down. I mean even the music is amazing.
It would be really cool if we had a full 3D remake of chrono trigger just because.
Being a 35 year old man that fell in love with rpg's with the Super Nintendo, seeing a project that obviously came from the heart of a group of people that love Chrono Trigger, watching this brings tears to my eyes. Would have loved to see this completed.
With FF6, chrono trigger is my best memory of that era, one of shinyiest diamond of the super Nintendo. More than 20 years after, we are still waiting for a remake... It will arrive, for sure, for now it's lost in time...
Thank you Square-Enix for shutting down a project from a fan that loved your game and was going to give it to you almost for free and made you millions.I hope that changing that for FFX,FFX-2,FFXII and (...ugh...) FFXIII was worth it.

Now imagine we got a completely shitty remake of this game, Square would be like "Ugh,the game is so bad. We don't care it is a remake made without our consent,it's bad as fuck. Let the developers suffer"
This goes for all video game companies. They only take it down because they know it will make some good money or in case of a free game, be loved by more fans than the original.

Looks like a lot of it was done already, the engine and some of the openning.
Most likely this was almost completed if not completely finished. And also chances are the source material still exists but is stuck on some dusty HDD or CD-R/DVD-R in a drawer.
I honestly hope this beautiful artwork and design is not lost forever. Some of us can hope for at least a source release at some point.

The creators are still out there, one of them is bound to have this. Their group is no longer together and the game could have been leaked before, one of them should just upload to piratebay, it would become a worldwide phenomenon overnight making millions of people happy.

It kind of makes no sense that square had C&D this game, I mean they could of asked to publish the game and share a split of the profits, or even ask them to work for them because this looks beyond AMAZING for a fan game, and it shows that they have the talent to make a game like this.

If someone made a game with crude parodies of all their characters meant for defamation, they'd still be able to cry discrimination, because they didn't prevent an eearlier fangame from being made.
You guys do know that the main director behind all of the great FF's and the such left Square when it became Square Enix right? He made his own company. Square Enix is NOT Squaresoft. Squaresoft was a great company who you could rely on every title to be good. Square Enix is a watered down shitty version of the original.

It's a shame that the developers stopped development. The leader said that quote "it wasn't their game to make". And I can respect that though. It was very profound.

what they should have done is made it, and offered to sell the rights to squareenix, and if they disagree, then they could distribute it free under the fair-use copywrite law. as long as they don't profit from this, then it is 100% legal.

In the 21st century, copyrights have no real need to exist. They do nothing except inhibit human evolution, be it artistically, technologically, or otherwise. I think people will figure this out, eventually - there's no need to prevent a technology from being improved, for instance, solely because an individual feels like they deserve to keep making money off of something that CAN be improved - especially when they REFUSE to improve it.
In the artistic realm, it's even more arbitrary - why should a person be able to copyright a character, idea, or even a song or lyrics? Let stories be told - if they get popular or screw up the canon - who cares? The masses choose what is right and good, the creators just create.
The only reason this game was stopped was because a certain corporation didn't want anyone else making money off of something they feel is theirs. But it never was theirs - it was the ideas of hundreds of different people - the majority of whom probably no longer receive paychecks from Square-Enix.
That's patents, sir. Patents do not belong in areas like software, for example. They generally are just plain wrong, there is no excuse, let alone reason, for justifying patents.
The length of copyright just needs to be reduced to something reasonable like 50 years, and things could be re-copyrightable that have lost copyright like every 15 years unless they have been made public domain by the copyright holder at the end of the copyright.
People are selfish and so they want some way to protect their intellectual property, this is served pretty well by copyrights.

I wanted this to be released so bad... I'm so mad at Square for shutting this down, but I'm too busy crying nostalgic tears at seeing Chrono's house in 3D with that familiar music... So beautifully done...

This looks a PS2 game! Which is NOT a bad thing, I think it looks great! I wish that this project could have continued... oh well... here’s hoping for an official Chrono Trigger remake.

I say fuck 'em. Obviously you can't make $$ from a sequel that isn't your idea, but in the spirit of the gaming community, make it, play it, enjoy it, and be fulfilled by that. Make money another way. If Square want's to be a corporate ass-hat, fuck em'. Make your own games, play them, enjoy life and stop lining the pockets of assholes that don't give a fuck about the game.

Pc, Wii U, 3ds, PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One....this project COULD HAVE been a gold mine! i wish i can meet these people and shake their hands this would have been a great game the fans would buy in a heartbeat. Square Enix should have given these people a job!
The solution is to make the full game completely, do all the beta testing ect.. THEN.. release it anonymously. Because at that point the game will spread & everyone will have a copy and it will stay on the internet just like emulation games.
The problem is people give out info when it's being created, thus it gets shut down.
But anyways this is just the start, i hope.
I hope it comes back with better graphics & better combat animation.

This had so much sweat and love put into it. If a company like Valve saw this, they would have hired the geniuses behind this and made a real game. Instead, Square threatens to sue them.
