I can remember as a kid just being blown away by this. The main protagonist not only dying, but sacrificing himself for his friends. They dont make games like this anymore.
It's an incredibly epic cutscene, and one that has been memorable for me my entire life as one of the few times that the main protagonist, YOU essentially, died, and not just fake died, you quite literally were vaporized and ceased to exist for a time. I was freaking out when I was a kid, which was the intent, but now I look back and I am at awe at the themes of self sacrifice, love for your friends, and the dedication to stand against evil, no matter the cost.
Thats what I told my friend. He recommended the game to me and asked me why this scene and everything after was so important to me. You nailed it. Id never played a game where I died before. Like my character REALLY died. You can get him back sure, but even when I played this in the early 00s I'd never experienced a moment like that. Hell, I can't think of many now even.
This theme of self sacrifice is really astonishing. As a Christian, I believe that's what Jesus Christ did, dying on the cross for our sins to forgive and save us
Whether you come back to life is not given, and even if you do, it's like you will lose something, since your leadership of the group isn't given, either.
It's more than just that the hero dies. It's also that one of the game's toughest enemies can become part of your party. (Of course, since Toriyama is involved, you can obviously see Magus as a type of Vegeta.) The story, the music, the graphics, are all so masterfully done. I still think that this is the greatest RPG ever made.
This is the most cursed moment in Chrono Trigger, Crono dies, Schala is lost, all lands are struck by tidal wave, and the floating kingdom is gone... Geez... Gone is the magical kingdom with its ambition
@@jk4675 I think he does have sentience and he is acting as a super apex-predator. He's clearly at least a psychopath. If he didn't have sentience then would he have been able to become the Time Devourer as his failsafe?
And the worst part about Schala's fate is it's because of you that she wound up trapped inside the palace. In the original timeline, she probably saved herself and her mother
Then even when Crono and the crew "defeat" Lavos. Lavos just get send to the dimension beyond time where it finds Schala and absorbs her to destroy all of time itself.
No. The cathedral theme has this feeling of “divine intervention”, which is fitting as the party is being saved for the greater good off the world. Sealed Door has a very complex feeling to it, one of ruin, urgency, curiosity, mystery, and despair, and I’m not sure what about it would fit the scene.
It's one thing to be spoiled that Crono dies. What one does not know until they see it is HOW. I didn't think he'd be straight up disintegrated by Lavos!
Never forget, YOU caused this to happen. This part is entirely optional. By coming back here and messing with the timeline, you sacrificed Chrono and used up Schala's power so she couldn't even save herself anymore. If you do this, it's up to you to finish what you started. Defeat Lavos, crush Queen Zeal, and most importantly... Make sure those you sacrificed mean something.
Yes the game has different endings from a multitude of factors, including Crono being dead or not. That arc and the other character arcs are all optional, though they seriously enrich the story.
If you go to present time and to Chrono's house to talk to his mother after this cutscene, she will ask how her son is doing

In retrospect, while this scene overall is great, Crono just walking up to Lavos and getting killed is unbelievably stupid and badly executed.
