@Luke O'Brien Amazingly, it is the oldest peice of complete music with lyrics. There are some older peices...but all fragmented. It was simple and beautiful but I could find nothing on who Seikilos was. These were the lyrics to his melody:
      While you live, shine
      have no grief at all
life exists only for a short while
      and Time demands his due
Until I heard it with the lyrics I didn't understand the melody was really meant to support this amazing singing and hedonistic vibe.
You can find many versions on youtube. Here's a version I really like. I hope you enjoy it:

He's actually quite erratic in my games and almost always makes an appearance for some reason. In my game as Korea, he was a dick beyond measure (!) and he actually wiped out all the other civs on his continent and had a ridiculously large army. Worse was when it turned out that a majority of the uranium deposits were on his continent and at the same time, he'd taken the votes of so many city-states that I'd to divert my focus on science to gold to prevent him from getting the World Leader vote. But in my game as Morocco, he was a nice neighbour as well as Elizabeth surprisingly. I had just two cities but he never bothered me even when I was aiming for a diplomatic victory.

This guy was my buddy in my game as Morocco until we hit the Information Era, when our different ideologies conflicted and he denounced me. It seemed like nuclear war was inevitable, and using my huge pile of gold, I bought a bunch of units to prepare. Well, I must have bought a lot of units, because one turn my military advisor said "He has a big enough army to wipe you off the planet" and the next he said "I think I saw the only unit Alexander had". A few turns later I won a cultural victory, so it didn't matter anyways.

Running through the plains of some country long-forgotten or relevant forever without a care in the world with no difference between those a millennia before you and one after, having the time of your life. You could do this forever until the sun begins to set, and you begin to walk with a friend forever back home in a hut, or a project, or a suburban farmhouse, and you realise that that was the time of your life, and always will be every day you do it.

Was playing as Greece today, and got pretty frrakin annoyed with The Netherlands as they beat me to a great city spot by 1 turn. I declared war in them to get the city, and then gave a generous peace deal (he was offering his last city, other than the capitol of course) and I let him keep it. Suddenly, the Iroquois declare war on me, followed shortly by Babylon. I made peace with them a while later, barely hanging on to the city I captured. I gave them free stuff in the hopes they would be ok with me. Suddenly, the Zulus ask me to declare war on The Netherlands again, and I foolishly agreed. The Iroquois and Babylon declared war on me again and that was it. You might be able to tell I've never won a domination victory before...

You shouldn't have gone to war. You should always deny when others tell you to aid them in wars because it's unfixable and denying won't damage your relationship with the civ who asked you as much as a war will damage your status globally.

  • @Phlebas

    I love this piece.
I've played plenty of games against Alexander but I just finished my first game _as_ Alexander an hour ago. I didn't get into a war even once. Unlike the AI, I played Greece as a peaceful builder.
Also, this game really demonstrated to me how powerful Greece's unique ability is. I was aiming for a scientific victory, figuring that I could focus on growth and science while getting most of my culture and military units from some city-state allies that I made early on. Because I wasn't aiming for a diplomatic victory, I didn't bother with the Patronage policy tree or try to get the Forbidden Palace. Occasionally, I impressed some city-states with my technological advancement, or connected certain resources, or built certain wonders, giving me what I saw as a nice temporary boost.
By the time the information era hit, I was allied with six out of the eight city-states on the map through no conscious effort of my own (I was rigging elections and staging coups with my spies, but mostly because I had nothing better for my spies to do do.) By the third UN vote, I had 26 out of 28 delegates and spies in the two remaining city states, which were friendly but not allies. Just before the final vote, I staged a successful coup and ended up with enough delegates to get the diplomatic victory.

Each leader has their own unique personality and I think Alexander has the friendliest personality of all the Civs. He rarely declares war on you until really late in the game so you can meet him in the Ancient Era and be butt buddies all the way to the Future Era. I think Pedro and Ahmad-Al Mansur are the friendliest, because though they are expansion characters, they have a friendliness of 8, and Pedro has a 7/8 in Friendship willingness, beaten only by Gandhi*. Alexander is a 7 in hostile, and 5 in friendly. He also has a low loyalty of 4, very low warmonger hatred of 2, 4 DoW willingness, but a relatively low deceptiveness of 4. I think the friendliest Vanilla character on paper is Gandhi or Washington. Washington is forgiving as long as you're not a warmonger, likely to be friendly, and a 5 in Deceptive. Gandhi is easy to befriend, but the least forgiving and the most nuke happy, so he is really friendly if you don't piss him off.

Especially with Alexander because he looks so smug about it. Everytime i think when I pop, that my character is saying something like "Alexander, why are you still on that horse all this time? Don't you need to go to the toilet or eat? There was little of a Greek collective at the time: Macedonia and all the Greek city states were considered to be pretty much the same with their shared culture and language. The concepts of them being two totally separated things didn't really appear until Macedonia and Greece were given their own two independence and national identities. Macedonia could very well have been a part of Greece today, if it was included in the area the Ottomans ceded to the state of Greece.
