After learning this is a rendition of Jupiter I fell down a rabbit hole trying to find my favorite version especially this "big tune" section. I listened to So Many and concluded..this is my favorite. It feels grand and old with gentleness. I love how string forward yet balanced it is. Truly a work of art.

But the lyrics of I Vow to Thee, My Country were matched up with the theme from Holst's Jupiter. True, but I suppose the reasoning is that since the first and last minutes or so of Jupiter are not present, it makes more sense to call it I Vow to Thee My Country. That, and I believe that today, more people are aware of I Vow to Thee My Country than they are with any works by Holst.
Holst was asked to write a separate piece of music for an occasion that was meant to be patriotic and would be used with this particular poem, but he was so busy he just gave them the middle section from Jupiter. World in Union is this theme but is in 4/4 time instead of 3/4 time.
I just found what song this is based on, it's "Jupiter: The Bringer of Jollity" by Holst. I'm sure many of you already knew that, but I suggest listening to that, since it's not background music it's much more intense!

fleetstreet11 The original Civ V forgot to account for queens, thus female leaders following Tradition are also called 'Lord'. As far as I remember, a later patch or Gods and Kings fixed this by adding 'Lady'. You can also modify the code to change titles based on gender.
I'm English and hardly patriotic (I hate the concepts of nationalism and patriotism), and yeah, I agree. On a vaguely related note, I don't know about you, but I'm glad Scotland didn't go independent. I'm all for giving them greater devolution (and Wales for that matter), but Scotland and the UK would've both suffered if they'd gone independent. I honestly believe we're all better off together, but England needs to be treated less like the clear leader of a political union, and more like the "first among equals". Hell, I think that the North should get devolution, purely due to the cultural and political differences between us and the South.

Jupiter came first. The "I vow to thee" part was taken from it, by request of Holst, and adapted into a full song.

This is actually Jupiter from the Planets by Gustav Holst. It was later adapted to the poem to be sung as I vow to thee my country.
True, but I suppose the reasoning is that since the first and last minutes or so of Jupiter are not present, it makes more sense to call it I Vow to Thee My Country. That, and I believe that today, more people are aware of I Vow to Thee My Country than they are with any works by Holst.
Holst was asked to write a separate piece of music for an occasion that was meant to be patriotic and would be used with this particular poem, but he was so busy he just gave them the middle section from Jupiter.
World in Union is this theme but is in 4/4 time instead of 3/4 time.
I just found what song this is based on, it's "Jupiter: The Bringer of Jollity" by Holst. I'm sure many of you already knew that, but I suggest listening to that, since it's not background music it's much more intense!
I'm amazed that few people in the comments made any remarks about how has a feature rendition of Holst's Jupiter from the Planets from 1:30 onwards, who of course is a brilliant English composer. That's honestly what made me love this theme even more.
I hope they bring back I Vow To Thee My Country or use Rule Britannia as the English theme in Civ VI.

Dead Pool Actually, Gustav Holst was the one who gave the melody 'Thaxted' to the English patriotic hymn "I vow to thee, my country".
The bit starting at 1:30 is straight out of Jupiter and as Rubicon said it was given to the hymn by Holst himself.

Nope! There is no Duchess of Lancaster, only a duke. Similarly, there is no real equivalent of "Lord" for a woman - it could be Lady or Baroness, depending on the title.
It's not entirely uncommon for women to take the masculine form of a title if they're regnant (i.e. not the spouse of the title holder, but holding the land directly in their own name). There have been examples of women styling themselves "King", too, though not in England.

fleetstreet11 The original Civ V forgot to account for queens, thus female leaders following Tradition are also called 'Lord'. As far as I remember, a later patch or Gods and Kings fixed this by adding 'Lady'. You can also modify the code to change titles based on gender.

I'm English and hardly patriotic (I hate the concepts of nationalism and patriotism), and yeah, I agree.
On a vaguely related note, I don't know about you, but I'm glad Scotland didn't go independent. I'm all for giving them greater devolution (and Wales for that matter), but Scotland and the UK would've both suffered if they'd gone independent. I honestly believe we're all better off together, but England needs to be treated less like the clear leader of a political union, and more like the "first among equals". Hell, I think that the North should get devolution, purely due to the cultural and political differences between us and the South.

On a more serious note what do you think of the... issue with Northern Ireland, From what I know of it many people in Ireland wish for the Island to be united, however the majority of people living in Northern Ireland are British with only a third of the populace being Irish. This is all from my Irish mother so I would like to know your side of the matter since you are English.
Mr. Worldwide If that's what the people of Northern Ireland want, they can go for it, but since they probably don't, they should get devolution (if they want it). What Ireland itself wants is pretty much irrelevant. It'd be nice if they'd rejoin the UK with a devolved government, but that's obviously unlikely.
