Sony XPERIA XA2 Ultra Review: The Biggest Mid-Ranger | Pocketnow

  • Sony XPERIA XA2 Ultra Review: Smack dab in the middle of the price spectrum, Sony delivers a MONSTER sized handset with the XPERIA XA2 Ultra. A 6" display might appeal to some "mini-tablet" phone fans, but what compromises did Sony have to make to keep the price tag in check?
For some folks, bigger will always be better, and the smartphone industry has more than its fair share of mini tablet phones to keep in our pockets and purses. Moving to the mid-range though introduces compromises. How do we deliver that big screen, in a premium package, while keeping prices in check. Sony thinks they’ve got the right formula with the Xperia XA 2 Ultra, so let’s put this beast through it’s paces.
Here we go folks. A six inch screen, Full HD resolution, that 16:9 aspect ratio, with Sony’s hallmark forehead and chin bezels. A step behind current premium phone trends, like skinnier aspect ratios, but looks can be deceiving. Similar heights, a little wider, but the overall surface area between this phone and a Note 8 is remarkably close.
Sony has done a remarkably good job of balancing Xperia design accents against thinner side bezels. I still enjoy this hard edged modern look.

Alrighty, the phones aren't what they used to be. But instead of going around asking if they're relavent anymore, why don't we send a clear message instead? Here's what I want from a Sony phone, other people can add on too.
1.4k display, OLED if you can, otherwise try to make it as bright as you can.
      2. Headphone jack. Don't lie, you could've kept it.
3.get competitive in audio again, just cuz no one else really bothers with it shouldn't stop you. Put in a quad-dac or whatever. If it sounds good I'm happy.
4.9-10mm thick is the MAX. 8 is about the sweet spot imo.
      5. Make it MORE waterproof than the competition. Phones are waterproof sure, but there are still definitely limits. Good enough simply isn't good enough anymore.
      6. Try to build in a acoustic surface or keep the dual front facing speakers. Just make sure that if you keep them the cut-outs are the same on the top and bottom. Make them flush.
7.128gb of built in storage. 64 is not what we should be getting for the price range you aim for with your premium phones.
      8. Better low light performance and get rid of the noise! Seriously you guys build some of the best cameras in the world, this shouldn't even be a complaint.
      9. For the love of God, either fix the fingerprint placement or just move it back to the side. The side is the way better option imo.
      10. Your cameras can't shoot raw. What the hell. You have crammed up to 23 megapixels into a phone and you don't give the ability to shoot raw. What?
      11. No less than a 3600 milliamphour battery. Your midrange phones have better batteries than your premium phones do.
      12. Revamp the camera app eintirely. I want hundreds of more options, although you did a really good job on the xz premium.
      13. Increase the ram buffer size on your sensor.
      14. Add iris scanning. I don't care about face scanners.
      15. Innovate. You used to be a company that even frickin Steve Jobs looked up too. You should be the first one with a beneath glass fingerprint sensor, you should be the first with chlorinated waterproof phones, you should be the one with proper integration into windows through software allowing you to text and video call from your computer through your phone, you should be the first to put 10gb of ram in a phone, you should be the first for everything. Your Sony for God's sake. (This is comming from the owner of: a Xperia e3, Xperia z3+, Xperia z5 premium, Xperia xz premium.) Feel free to mention if I missed anything but these are what I care about most.***Edit: the phone I want changes on is the upcoming xz pro/ flagship. Not the midranger. That phone is quite good for its price.***

Pocketnow I wish the Fast Charging was actually FAST! I'm considering buying my wife an XZ2 Compact, but the Fast Charging is still pretty slow even in that compact Flagship. I think this Mid-range phone is of lower offerings than a Flagship from a year ago at probably the same price. I'm also having a hard time swallowing the price of that XZ2 compact at over $650. Yikes!

Coming from my beloved Moto X Pure Edition, I recently got myself an Xperia XZ Premium. I was skeptical and there are a few frustrating things about it (fingerprint sensor disabled, some unwanted software features, headphone jack volume too quiet), but overall I am definitely a fan. The display, the stereo speakers, the camera button, the battery, the performance, and the design are winners for me (especially the design... bezels and all... my red XZ is a real head turner). Based on my Xperia experience so far, I think they're highly underrated products, at least in the US.
Also very glad to see you doing Pocketnow reviews again Juan, you're one of the best out there. Cheers.

After having issues with my LG G4 locking up frequently and chewing through battery life, even with a new battery, I decided to bite the bullet and get a new phone. I chose the Xperia XA2 Ultra. So far I am liking it. I do miss having a user replaceable battery. Photos seem softer. Even after turning off the soft effect. Perhaps the LG G4's software was over sharpening images and I just got used to that. I am a little bummed to learn that the only way to get full usage of the 23 megapixels is to switch to 4:3 format. Still, 20 megapixel 16:9 images are not bad. Otherwise, so far, performance seems to be great.

It's a great deal 1080p is all you need on a phone you can't tell the difference between it and 1440p on such a small screen, so really all 1440p does is make the battery life worse.

I hate to go off topic but may I ask when you will be releasing your real audio review for the Galaxy S9? I understand it's no competition with the V30/V20 or Axon 7, but I'd like to know if Samsung has improved the audio output. If so, keeping the 3.5mm headphone jack is just another example of how the S9 and S9+ seem to be the only reasonable option for getting a flagship right now, since most dongles truncate audio and add the added inconvenience of carrying a dongle and wearing out the type C port quicker.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

People weren't watching or sharing the "real" reviews, so they're pretty much gone. I tried to warn people, but they're too expensive and time consuming to produce for the views they got. ESPECIALLY after the ad-pocalypse.

Just checked this thing out at Best Buy and compared it to all the other top volume phones. The video streaming quality of it blew the others out of the water, if you can get past the bulkiness of it. I've been a Samsung guy for years, and I hated my AMOLED screen after comparing it to this guy. I'm not a big camera user, even less of a selfie snapper, which is what this phone is definitely aiming for.

So I shot a bunch with the T-Mo SIM only to find that it had expired, and I had to finish the review on my personal AT&T. Didn't get to test the WiFi calling.

Finally a replacement for my Moto X Pure that comes in at the same cost. The X4 doesn't cut it.

have you gotten this phone, if so how is it going? My moto x pure is dying the problems are fixable (battery lasts 1.5 hrs of only charges if i hold the cable a specific way), but I've been debating just getting this phone rather than fixing the old phone

I think this phone is really stylish - finally a good evolution of Sony's design language, which despite stagnating the last few years is fundamentally good - and the size looks perfect. The battery life is possibly the biggest draw for me. I'm having a tough time deciding whether I want this or to spend a bit more for a OnePlus 5T or Honor View 10.

      @SomeGadgetGuy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Whelp, the 5T is quickly vanishing from the OP site. Shows out of stock for me now. Likely won't see many new OP's until the 6 is released.

Juan: you think Sony will make a smaller phone with same internals? I'm Keen to find a decent 5" phone at a decent price. And the SoC 630 rules.
    Cheers

I really wanted to get the blue one. But Amazon only had one in blue and it was a used one.
So I ended up getting the silver one instead. I'm mean, it's not that bad. Silver isn't too bad of a color. But the blue one looks very unique.

I got my Sony Xperia Xa2 for just under 300 dollars and I just love it its fast and has a really good battery life because of that snapdragon 630 and its really fast the audio isn't perfect but even flagships have not perfect audio as well I think it's a bargain using a camera at 4k 30 fps the camera quality is the best in its price range the only downside is the plastic but it feels very premium and has weight to it 32 gb isn't a lot but you can expand the storage to 400 gb if you need all that the screen is sharp get bright not too bright to hurt your eyes in the dark the quick charge charges fine for me bc normally I get a full days worth of use and charge it at night and it lasts me to an extent if I'm on and off of my phone 1 day and a half

I want to replace my aging iPhone SE for this. I know this Xperia is weaker than my iphone in terms of performance but that battery is too tempting. My problem however is seeing how the Xperia XA2 Ultra has 32gb of storage, but ~12gb are already used, while my iphone se has also 32gb of storage but only ~9gb used. That's the only thing that makes me look between this and the Samsung A7 (2018) which has a 64gb and a 128gb version.

Plastic lens cover very heavy mono toned speaker with little descernable sound mods. It does feel cheap scratches easily. Big screen with good contrast. Primary purpose watching Netflix or equivalent not really enjoyable without the stereo speakers. Camera is actually quite basic some adjustments but there is a lot of noise in most settings and night shots are grainy. Overall not worth £379 wait six too 8 months and it'll be £245 or less.

Apparently, a new phone with no Band 71 for T-Mobile. A deal killer. You never seem to cover what LTE bands are included on the phones you review but these things are just expensive paperweights without the right LTE bands.
