  • Bark collars (and all e-collars in general) have a really bad reputation. There are lots of ways to train dogs not to bark. Here is an article that details the steps that I use:

    If you find yourself in a situation where you need your dog to stop barking right now, however, you can safely rely on some bark collars for your dog. Here are six tips to make sure that you are using a bark collar safely and effectively.

      I have a 10 week old puppy and she barks nearly non stop when in the crate. I rent a room and my landlord lives with me. The barking has to stop or I have to find a new place to live. Is it safe to use a collar on a puppy? If so, which model would you suggest? Thank you.

      . . . 0101O puppies are gonna bark when crates until they get used to it. Could be days, could be weeks. A Bark collar on a puppy is not a humane option.

      I would never put a bark collar on a puppy. However, it is totally fine to use one on an older dog that is used to the crate and is making noise for the wrong reasons-to get attention. Even that is a temporary fix. Ultimately we have to figure out why they are barking and curb the behavior.

      @@DogFocusTraining Would you recommend for a 6 month golden retriever? I dont crate her, she literally barks nonstop for attention and to get her way :(

    I'm going to give one a try, see I am getting good results from food and command training, my main problem is my dog's anxiety when alone mainly night times, so I don't need any other kind, and I will simply switch the collar on and off without him knowing when stroking daily as my main problem is night times when I need to sleep.
    And your right the collar should be sound and vibration activated only activated after extended periods of barking, also having a high pitch sound for a few chance warnings sounds like a good idea, as not to let your dog think each time it makes a noise it'll be shocked, that'd be mean haha
    Good video, informative.

      I really like the SportDog 425 for training purposes. But I don’t use it for barking. If you want all in one check out the Garmin. I’ll go grab a link and insert it here when I get home.

    Very interested reading this and wondered whether you think a bark collar might be for us. We have a young (7 months) Labrador Retriever. At night, he sleeps in a crate and is very well behaved an quiet. When he wakes up in the morning, he immediately begins to bark. We assumed this was because he needed the toilet so waited for a moment of quiet, praised and let him out to go pee. We then put him back in the crate. However, he won't settle then and after a few minutes, the barking begins again much louder and more persistent. At times, we've ridden it out for an hour or more and then it feels cruel letting him bark himself silly. The other issue is, the barking is happening earlier and earlier each morning. My partner is staying up with him later (1am) to try and get him to sleep later so we can praise that but he began waking at 6am for the toilet, once you put him back in his crate, he'd start barking again. So we tried getting him to the toilet before he'd start barking and then bringing him with us to the bedroom but that seemed to make him start earlier and earlier. As I said it was 6am, then 5.45am, then 5.30am and it keeps going back until at one point it was 4.30am. We don't think he's doing it because he needs a wee because when you put him back to bed he goes mad and starts barking like mad. I've read so many books on positive handling and told everyone to follow the rules and praise / let out when he isn't barking. He's fine in his crate as a rule and enjoys having his Kong brain toys etc. We try not to give him this though early in the morning as again, we feel like we are praising this early waking up. Do you think an anti-bark collar is a solution? Or are we missing something?

      We would, however, try a sound only. Or a sound & vibrate on a low setting. I really don't like the static ones.

      Have you taught your pup the QUIET command? That is where I would start. It is a proactive approach to the problem. It gives you a command that corrects the behavior.

    What would you currently recommend for the no bark collar? I am looking at sport dog but it looks like they are mostly all about the noises now and not the vibration as well. Would you have a link that I could use? I have a lab and no matter what I do he will not stop. I want one like you show in the video but I am struggling to find one. Thanks!

    Thank you so much... someone recommended an Amazon collar for my yappy toy poodle, but I was hesitant and bought something on Amazon.. after this video- I went to the website for sport dog because I am so concerned about the use of these collars. Yet the barking is awful and people complain when they take care of him if I travel and leave him with someone...so....... I'm going to research on their site for something more appropriate...any suggestions for my toy poodle who is now 5 years old?

    I enjoyed this advice, but have to disagree totally with not using remote control for barking. I would never want my dog to never vocalize or be afraid to at all. We have only corrected for out of control barking in reaction to other dogs barking next door. A playful bark when chasing a ball is perfectly ok in my book. 😊

    • @debinindiana
      @debinindiana 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I stand corrected…it truly IS difficult to get the timing right and consistently! So, guess I’m going to go with the sensor collar or have to have more patience with the redirect, positive reinforcing. But I might be a crazy person before she”gets it”. Lol!
      Anyway….YOU WERE RIGHT on your advice!

    Would you recommend a Garmin Bark Limiter 2?

    • @DogFocusTraining
      @DogFocusTraining  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Garmin has some advantages that no other collar has. It is a rechargeable battery, will not correct your dog when there are noisy dogs around, it has an adjustable setting for “acceptable barking.”
      I still like the SportDog more, but the Garmin is a good alternative.

    Would this shock them if they're playing with other dogs and vocal? I have a Collie mix who is barking at things inside the house but he plays with my other dogs and yells/screams. I don't want it to shock him for acceptable noises like that, just when he barks at the neighbours, dogs, cars, etc.

    • @DogFocusTraining
      @DogFocusTraining  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would suggest taking it off when they are playing with other dogs. Dogs will sometimes start pulling and tugging on collars. I usually am okay with my dogs vocalizing when they are excited and playing.

      Then it's not the collar for him/her! Change the setting or try putting the collar between the throat and towards the ears. Make sure the collar is tight enough.

      I would suggest you figure out why your dog is barking first. If your dog is experiencing some separation anxiety, the the collar is not the best solution. In that case, you should visit with a vet and discussion other options. I think the bark collar is a good immediate option until you can figure things out. If you leave the collar on and there are other issues besides what I call “nuisance” barking, then you will do more damage than good
