You need to test this on an old threaded mtb If it works itld be interested in buying a set or two. Maybe even having the cups sit on the outside of the tube instead of the inside?
Great video, very engaging presentation; can I ask if I have this right, the frame tube diameter isn't really important as long as the top and bottom cup inserts are the right diameter? So you made cups with insert "walls" thin enough to accommodate the one inch fork? The knurled spacer (fake top nut?) was an awesome touch even if you didn't use it in the end.
Im pretty sure, this only works on bmx bikes, not old mountain bikes with 1" fork. Older bmx bikes have a larger headtube than old mountain bikes. Have you ever done this with a old mountain bike?
Can you not cut anything off the top of the fork in order to shorten the height of the fork tube or will that cut off the inner threads you need to put the cap on and torque down with. I'm not sure I'd like it that tall
nice goose to update the head set with. I'd like to do this to my 88 haro master one day. but ur saying I'd have to purchase the lineage haro haro fork set......
They are parts of a regular $10 headset bearing kit. He just didn't put in the bearings. This steering now works purely by friction and is held straight by two 1/64" thick lips of aluminium.
An older bmx bike from the 70s and early 80s have a wide diameter. I own a Huffy pro thunder 2 from circa 1979. removed all the threaded fork and stem components and the cups just came off easily without having to use my fingers. I had a threadless 1 1/8 cup and the stock 1in. cup. I see that the stock cup is fat on the upper part of the cup lip and the end is like slanted down 1in. to fit the stock 21.1 stem. practically the fat part like I mentioned I saw when I put the stock and the new cups next to each other. the thickness is the same but the stock is fat on the top and slanted down to 1inch. So practically these vintage mongoose, murray, huffy, and etc. between the 70s and early 80s can be converted to threadless. I ran a S&M Pitchfork threadless stem on the huffy. Hopefully this info will give you an idea when you get yourself a vintage bmx.
Ok so that looks ridiculous with the fork tube that tall. Can't you cut it down some so your not using so many spacers and it's not riding so high? Very good video,,but WOW that's really high right??
I purchased a Walmart mountain bike that I am building, Hyper Havoc FS. The quill stem is 21.1mm (I'd imagine it's still a 1" head tube). I am looking to upgrade the forks to a RockShox but cant find any 1" threaded forks. Will this set work? If so I wanna purchase a headset.
u should paint those forks mongoose blue like the blue ones used to be.....that chrome doesn't match the shade of those nickel plated frames. and follow the blue theme with a few other parts to bring it altogether
Nice video, I have an Old School SE Racing PK Ripper Looptail from 1987 and have it with a fork that is not the original Landing Gear. I want to adapt a new threadless landing gear fork (because I can´t find 20" Landing gear threaded ones), so your video will help me a lot to put a landing gear on it as it should be. Then I´ll take the complete bike to the US and sell it on ebay. Thanks!
I have a 1980 and 8q powelite frames 20 in w 1inch headtube want to install a new stem. 1 1/8 but the headtube/ forks are q in. Can I just buy a 1 1/8 in to 1 inch converter quill to make it work?
Hey, cool video!! I did email you but I guess you're a busy guy. I am interested in buying one of your headsets, would you ship to the UK? And if you do. Will this work on an old school 10 speed racer? Cheers
sort of , I designed headset cups to fit old school 32.4 headtube (standard old school size) and allowed for clearances to allow 1 1/8th forks to be installed , here is link to my Custom 24" Mongoose that I designed the headset for, everyone saw it and wanted one , Ive sold over 40 of these with not one complaint !! bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=563909
for the most frames, the tube of the fork does not past inside the head tube. So no matter what head sets you'll use, this just do not work for the most frames.
@@TheChanges007 I'm interested in buying one of your 1" ~ 1-1/8" conversion Headsets, but have had little luck in making contact on the matter and I was wondering if there's another way?
Ed Kavanaugh don't do it. if you check the thread that he posted about this build, you will notice he was banned from the site. why? because he swindled a bunch of members out of hundreds and never delivered the headsets.
Why is everyone avoiding the 20 questions along with my own about how to solve the height of the top of the fork tube. Its way to tall. Is there any remedy or is it what it is. Ive seen thousands of bikes with the 1 inch old school head tube have lovely looking threadless forks and headsets on them. That the head mounts down flush or very close to flush to the top of the head tube itself
Not sure why anyone would want to convert a old school bmx threaded fork to a crappy threadless fork. But it looks like some do by looking at this video lol
What ever happened to this guy? I saw some chatter on the BMX museum where he was ripping people off. I need a conversion head set but the internet isn't giving up many leads for BMX conversions.
Cool.. informative.. innovative.. you got a thumbs up from me!!! But 1 question tho.. why TF wud u want to put a new school skyway fork on that old school goose??? I love both schools of bmx bikes .. but that goose didnt deserve that.. lol..
will not, because the steerer tube does not past inside the head tube of that frames (I tried it). You'll need to change the headtube of your frame or just buy an other frame.
The USA is the only English speaking country there is that says dee-kal. Have you ever stopped and thought it’s you that’s saying it wrong. Let’s face it, what passes for English in the USA is t very good. The rest of us make fun of you for the way you say it. As an FYI the guy in the vid is from Canada.
Not trying to be nitty just some constructive critisism and, i hope you and viewers can benefit. Feel free to research and fact check me. The easy one... those are not loose bearings those are race bearings. Chalk it up to a bit of tounge tie. Secondly u ABSOLUTLEY have to put grease on the surface of the cups and the inside of the steer tube when pressing shells. This makes them press easier (although yours went in easy) it may damage the bike in many other ways... Third although your home-made press does not go inside the bearing cup you still must remove the bearings before pressing. The pressure will deform the cup until release and may damage bearings inside. Lastly park tool sells a guide for a saw for cutting the fork or ,your local bike shop has one. Cut the fork to size and 86 most those spacers. Although this is a steel or chromo fork each of those spacers are 5mm pluss the aprox 15 mm asthetic spacer. Running 40mm or more in spacers can be dangerous. It will put excessive stress on the fork and bearings lead to deformation and possibly cracking... like puting your seatpost past the limit line. Good video i hope the project worked on thats a super clean bike dude. Hope it turns some heads and drops some panties 🤙edit: just some spell checking for easier reading.
Hey, cool video!! I did email you but I guess you're a busy guy. I am interested in buying one of your headsets, would you ship to the UK? And if you do. Will this work on an old school 10 speed racer? Cheers
I see by the way I got mine custom made by my friend replicate the Verde conversion cup to fit modern integrated headset so I can use 1-1/8 fork with built in race. Regardless what we use, as long is a 1-1/8 definitely the durability compared to 1 inch is far stronger and rigid.
Whether it’s leisure or for money, I think the custom machining cups really work with modern fork. In terms of price is far cheaper than hunting for the old school fork and stem be it used or NOS. In terms of weight and durability, I’m very sure it’s far lighter then old ones. I think it’s good if U can mass produce. Many would love to get from U. Especially if U can make the cup that fit the modern cartridge bearing than cage bearing.
LOL @ "deckles" Good info here. I like the touch of the hex spacers to mimic the old school headset.
Master .Thanks from Colombia. The application of Your Systems is easy, is awesome.
You need to test this on an old threaded mtb If it works itld be interested in buying a set or two. Maybe even having the cups sit on the outside of the tube instead of the inside?
I wish I found this earlier, I've been trying to find a replacement threaded fork for my 80s 24" bmx with no luck!

Love to know how the invisible bearings hold up
Im pretty sure, this only works on bmx bikes, not old mountain bikes with 1" fork. Older bmx bikes have a larger headtube than old mountain bikes. Have you ever done this with a old mountain bike?
old MTB are narrower. you have to make the hole bigger to fit the cups. but is not much and a guy with a lathe can do it
Awesome, guess it would be nice to have a lathe in my back room too! Great job, are you selling these? If not, you should! 👌👌👌👍👍👊💥
I missed where you got the head set and barring cup?
What brand and where did you get that headset????
I need one of your adapted headsets for my Old School PK Ripper to put it a 1 1/8" fork threadless sealed!!!
not many people know about the old PK ripper mg neighbor had. i had just a mcs spider and magnum
dope, gonna do this.
Damn... I wish I saw this about 2 months ago!
Hello, very good video, what size is the headset? Well, I need to do the same. I hope you can guide me.
Very nice work.
These headsets still available? Like to use 1 1/8 forks in a 1inch frame
His Email address is in the description.

Nice deckles..even if they are the wrong color :)
Always use grease on all parts
So this was a custom built headset then?
So you took a stock headset and turned it down in a lathe to fit your head tube?
Someone needs to make these
They are parts of a regular $10 headset bearing kit. He just didn't put in the bearings. This steering now works purely by friction and is held straight by two 1/64" thick lips of aluminium.
Good stuff man thank you for that I think it would be cool to pick up old bike and make a project out of it.

One more thing will not work on vintage mountain bikes mentioned on the comments above
Very nice video! were you buy that cups?
Can make them for Titanium road bikes??
Old school bmx head tubes are 1-1/8 to begin with lol
LMAO... YES. Video.... does not make this clear...........?????????????????????????????
why do i feel like its just a 1" straight tube fork going into a 1" head tube
Did you made or purchase that headset?
nice work...
Are you still making the headsets
These are just the cups of a regular headset bearing kit. He just didn't put in any bearings.
where do i buy now !!
seriously????

trust that what he's showing won't work there is like 7 types of 1 inch headset sizes ... the "bmx 1inch" is different then other kinds of 1inch

Kevin Wayburn did u ever finish tht havoc fs
justin wright I'd like to know too, I just bought the same bike and would also like to upgrade the forks and headset.

What are you using headset?
Its that a threaded fork or threadless?
I have a 1980 and 8q powelite frames 20 in w 1inch headtube want to install a new stem. 1 1/8 but the headtube/ forks are q in. Can I just buy a
1 1/8 in to 1 inch converter quill to make it work?
where did you get the blue frame stickers from? thanks
Sir im no pro but i wanted to change my bmx quil stem to a modern bmx stem can a standard 20 fork fit in a modern day stem?
Can you buy semi intergrated headset caps at a bike shop to make the headset from cartridge bearings to sealed ?
i was thinking will it not tire your head tube ?
Hi i got haro group 1 al can i convert from thread to threadless fork
When did he install the bearings? Either I missed that when watching or this is not going to work without bearings.
they were sealed
integrated sealed bearings inside the cups. I personally would just keep the old ones as long as the bearing surfaces aren't all mucked up.
do you still make these? how much?
i would nt want a 1 1/8 stem on an old skool bike but nice bits and nice vid.
bobbitt187 Sealed bearings would be nice though
Hey, cool video!! I did email you but I guess you're a busy guy. I am interested in buying one of your headsets, would you ship to the UK? And if you do. Will this work on an old school 10 speed racer? Cheers
wait so you mean to tell me you can just put the 1/8th cups in the 1" headset tube? they just fit?

+Huzaifa Ahnaf check the inner diameter for your frame head tube, most of the headset requires the inner diameter of 34 mm
for the most frames, the tube of the fork does not past inside the head tube. So no matter what head sets you'll use, this just do not work for the most frames.
you could also just cut the forks down a little, so you don't have to run the big spacer.

Did the sealed new headset must be a special measure to fit the new system? Thanks!

Hello sir where you buy headset please

How old school do you have to go? I'm looking to convert my 2002 Expedition so I can install a fork with lockout.
1 inch threadless to 1 1/8 threadless what does he need to convert his kink bmx ?
Awesome
What's with the camera
Are you can't tell me where I can't buy this aluminium threadless headset? I want to convert my 82 crusier Hutch.
Hutch, haven’t heard that name in a long time 👍
just what I'm looking for.

don't do it. if you check the thread that he posted about this build, you will notice he was banned from the site. why? because he swindled a bunch of members out of hundreds and never delivered the headsets.
@hubertcarter837 because he was ordering them from a vendor and I believe that dried up on him.

thats the old racing frame from 80 ish nbl

why didn't you grease anything that thing is going be rough if you change it later down road
it's a sealed bearing system.,, that's the whole point

Threadless looks way cleaner
Except for that goofy ass spacer.. If he could get that fake nut with a different spacer to work, it would look a _lot_ better.

Why would you take an old school bike and turn it into something new? Why not just build something newer?
