Black Bear Pass!!!

  • We did Black Bear Pass!!! We made it to the summit and there was quite a bit of snow. We carried on and eventually got to a spot where the snow got deeper and nobody had been beyond there so as a group(a few extra guys were also there trying to decide) we decided to turn around. After trying to get up the snowy hill and sliding a lot, we decided to again turn around and try our luck with the trail. Our decision paid off and we ran out of the snow after a while.

    The first time I went over Black Bear was in 1979 in a Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser. I think its actually worse now due to all the rutting, but its wider now in many places. Still a thrill!!! I really enjoyed your vid. By the way I wheel in a Jeep Gladiator.

    Thank you for the great video as it brings me up to date and has stirred many found memories. Been over it and the Imogene Pass loop eight times beginning in 1967. In August 1968 had the good fortune of seeking shelter in the Powerhouse due to being caught in a snowstorm with an open jeep coming down off of Black Bear ! They've changed or diverted the creek to run off the opposite side of the Powerhouse and relocated the falls!
    Glad you enjoyed the adventure and beauty of the area. I really enjoyed seeing it again. Maybe this summer I'll try it again.
    I see you came from Illinois for the adventure. You're not the only one from there who sought this adventure - I as well !

    Nice video! I'll never drive or trailer my 91 YJ the 496 miles to that area to try it out. I rent a jeep when I'm in that area (doing Engineer, Imogene, Ophir, etc.). As a result, I'll never be able to do Back Bear (rental companies don't allow it). I've always wanted to give it a go, but will have to settle for good videos like yours. Thanks!

      Yes sir it is definitely an amazing area up there! I've been up there a few times, done almost every Trail up there with the exception of Stony pass and a couple of the up-and-down trails between Silverton and Animas Forks. Hopefully as usual they have all the trails clear by July 4th. Props to the Ouray County road crew, they do a great job. First time I went up there was in a bone stock 99 Jeep Cherokee and I have progressed to my current Jeep, a lightly modified 05 Jeep TJ.

    Was this from the Ouray side? Is it relatively easy up to this point- is it scenic? I want to try but don't want switchbacks or stairs, etc.

    • @chkwgn460
      @chkwgn460  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes from Ouray side. It's not bad for the most part till you start down to Telluride. There is a certain point where it becomes one way so you have to start from Hwy 550. It is scenic but the better parts are looking over Telluride.
      I would do Ophir Pass and see how you like that, it's beautiful scenery. Also Last Dollar Highway. Very scenic but not real difficult.

    Caught my interest since I have a 2015 limited, same color and 20” wheels. Are your tires taller than stock, did you add skid plates, and did you add any sort of lift? Hard to tell from the video with regards to lift.
    Never been on black bear but looks intriguing. I’ve seen the not so lucky but fortunate to survive videos.
    Thanks…great vid!

    • @chkwgn460
      @chkwgn460  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ours is 2012 limited with the 20" wheels also. The tires are just a tad bigger than stock. I put Rocky Roads 2" spacers in front and .75" spacers from I think a TJ in the rear. There are a few videos on here that gave me the idea. Actually lifted it more like 2"
      No skid plates yet but highly recommend them. I've hit the gas tank more than once and pushed up the floor under the drivers seat. Thankfully it didn't take out the fuel lines that are right there.
      I'm super impressed with how good it does on the trails.
      We did Moab also, there are videos from there also if you look back.
