  • And in today's episode of Engineering Nerdporn we have me and my bottom bracket for my Look bike.
    I've also drilled the frame and flipped the stem over.
    I will be doing a video about the design and manufacturing of this bottom bracket shortly.

      Treve Kneebone You don't need one! There's all sorts of great BBs that fit your bike. Check out SKF bottom brackets. Hard to find, not cheap, but Best thing going. Chris King bearings are the best in the business. None better. You can service those on the bike. Their bearings last almost indefinitely if you take care of them even semi regularly.
      Ive got Campy Record and Dura Ace BBs that are 30-40 years old. I have a couple Phil Woods too. I'm not sure how old they are!
      Hambini's BBs (while great) are bandaids for the suckers that bought and drank the koolaide! He's not gonna do threaded. He knows Shimano's BBs are fine! Retail on a Dura Ace outboard BB is $40. The cheapest Dura Ace part in the lineup! Team Ineos uses them I think. Cheap enough to afford 3 a year easily! But you (might) only need to replace it maybe every other year.

      @lukehoughton3789 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      RollinRat I'd be interested to know if a CK bottom bracket would be comparable with a Hambini BB - given CK will align to the frame with exact presision, whereas a Hambini BB will align and create a perfect interface between bearing and crank, reducing long term wear? 🤔

    • @rollinrat4850
      @rollinrat4850 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Luke Houghton Chris King manufactures his components to a higher standard than just about anyone else. He's the only manufacturer who makes his own bearings, EVEN THE BALLS, as far as I'm aware of. These bearings are, by design, serviceable. You don't throw them away. I can tell you from experience, if you ride reasonably and perform even semi regular maintenance, these components, even the bearings will last virtually one's lifetime.
      This is surgical grade manufacturing. Ive built surgical and medical hardware, as well as aerospace , defense, inspection hardware even carbon components for satellites and spacecraft.
      I'm familiar with very high end manufacturing. I saw one of CKs hubs disassembled and I bought it on the spot. I own 7 CK hubs and 3 headsets, from 10-36 years old. They're all on the original bearings.
      I haven't tried a bottom bracket yet nor have I seen a Hambini unit in person. Hambini's bearings aren't really serviceable AFAIK. Maybe someday I'll get a CK BB. At $150, that would buy me 4 or 5 Dura Ace or XTR units at my costs. That's probably enough to easily last me the rest of my life! I had a Shimano XT unit that lasted 12 years of hardcore abuse and epic rides! $25!

      If the head tube is reamed and faced first, and the top cap doesn't have gorilla preload put on it, most headset should last well. FSA kit gets a bad rep because it's generally bunged onto unpreped frames by venture capitalist lifestyle marketeering catalogue companies.

    Hambini does DI2! Whooot! I was hoping you were going to go that route. Do you have holes internal to the bottom bracket shell in the bike so you can fish the DI2 B-junction and the various wires down into there? Are you going with the internal battery inside the seat post? If you are, make sure you get the SM-BTR2 so it supports the wireless connectivity to the EW-WU111 wireless module. Assuming you are interested in wireless data connectivity to your head unit (Garmin or whatever)

    Great vids Mr Hambini :) just one thing leaves me perplexed - latest wind tunnel tests with a dummy rider (like Tour magazine) shows that frame has a big impact on the overall aerodynamics and wheels surprisingly low impact..so I just scratch my head now..

    Good video 👍 the number of issues with BB's and the need for expensive alternatives seems to be an endorsement of the Campag system? With UT cranks the original bearings sit in the same place, as intended, with Campag supplying either a press fit cup or screw in.

    Hi Hambini. You mentioned handlebars at the end. Sorry if you have previously answered this, but I was interested on your take of handlebar width and if the standard 42cm is too wide or, alternatively, a good sweetspot between aero gains and control on descents? I just ordered 40cm bars. I had 44cm aero bars, just because my bike is XL and they assume therefore that I have wide shoulders. I also was wondering what you thought about the idea that a highly positioned handlebar, relative to the ground, enables most riders to get flatter and more aero, or is slamming your stem the better way to go? Otherwise thanks for the content and honesty :)

    My current (standard shimano threaded) bb is nowhere near that free spinning. If this is due to misalignment, would fitting this Hambini BB resolve the issue by forcing the holes into alignment when it's tightened up? Or would it not be possible to fit unless the frame is perfect in the first place?

    Hey Hambini do you sell this particular bottom bracket for shimano hollowtech with 68mm threaded? My Road bikes BB is starting to get old and I have been waiting to get a new one.

  • @earthstick
    @earthstick 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I fitted a new Shimano threaded BB recently and noticed the diameter of the threaded cups was less than the one it replaced. It looks to me that you could make the diameter what ever you want because it is outside the frame and does not foul anything. But, there are splines cut in so a tool can be used to tighten it. If the diameter increases you need another tool. Does yours use the same diameter as the previous Shimano BB so that the old tool can be used or do you have your own tool?
