  • Today, I look at how to use Affinity Photo for Frequency Separation. I demonstrate how to use Frequency Separation in Landscape Photography to sharpen your photos and create an impressive Orton effect. The Orton effect is a popular technique among Landscape Photographers, used to make your photos glow.
    Following an earlier video, I did on Frequency Separation using Photoshop, I received a few questions about how to create a frequency separation in Affinity Photo. If you want to see the original video which explains more about frequency separation, here’s the link.

    Creating a frequency separation is even easier if you’re using Affinity Photo to process your landscape photography. A dedicated filter in Affinity Photo does most of the work for you. All you need to do is select the best radius for the effect you want to apply. If you want to sharpen your photos, use a small radius in the 4-8 pixel range (higher resolution cameras need a higher radius). If you want to apply the Orton effect, use a higher radius of 20-40 pixels (again, higher-resolution cameras need a higher radius).

    robin, thanks for going over the filter. i do wonder if you know of any luminosity mask panels for affinity photo. i used a panel in another program, finding it very useful. so far, nothing found for affinity photo.

      Sorry, I haven’t seen anything for Affinity but a few people have published macros if you search the Affinity Photo forum.

    • @davidellinsworth22
      @davidellinsworth22 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Use blend ranges instead. Highlight a layer and click the cog icon. You then have two grids, use the left hand grid to blend whatever effect as you wish into the tonal ranges. For example if you want the effect just to impact the highlights then pull down on the left (to blend the effect out of the shadows) and unchecked linear so that you can create a curve to dynamically blend the effect into just the highlights.
      You can also make selections based on luminosity and alter the tolerance... that then masks that tonal range and you can make whatever adjustment you like.

    This one has become my go to for Orton effect that I have set up in macro . Working extremely well with my earthy ''where water flowed" abstracts .
    However , I often want to remove some of the blur only or have different strengths of blur across the image . The only way I have found to do this is to add a mask to the blur (high frequency) layer >paint on black at 100% to make a full blur effect >then use difference strengths of the white brush to remove the blur to suit . Sort of working opposite to how I'm used to .
    That understandable ?
    Although not overly important ; but is there another/better way Robin ?
    Cheers

      I've been using this effect for quite a few years now and find it better than all the alternatives I've tried. If you want to apply it selectively, the best way is through a Lumiunosity Mask. If you are using Affinity Photo, apply a Luminance Range mask to the layer or use the Range Controls on the group. You can then avoid applying the blur to darker subjects in the scene (or even areas that are too bright). Having done this, you can add a further mask filled with black to gide the effect. Then with a white brush, paint on the mask in the areas where you want to see it. I do this type of editing a lot in both Affinity Photo and Photoshop. I think it creates a nice look.

    Question: Why or when I would do frequency separation and not just sharpening?

    • @RobinWhalley
      @RobinWhalley  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's just another technique to have. I tend to use the Frequency Separation to soften the image rather than sharpen it. I also tend to use this technique selectively rather than across the entire image. It just gives it a subtly different look. You may find the same when using it selectively to sharpen.

    I found it usefull. By the way the orten effekt could be done much easyer. Please Look into the official affinity tutorial. It is only one layer and a Range mask. But 8n sum it is the same. Affinity Photo is for that stuff much easyer to use! Thanks one thousend times and have a friendly xmas

      Thanks for the suggestion, I have already seen the Affinity video. There are also many other ways to create the effect and all are slightly different in the appearance. The point of this video though was not about creating the Orton effect, it was about creating a Frequency Separation. I hope you find that helpful.

      Folder or Group. I don't think it will leave people confused and most of the Affinity users I've spken to seem to be happy using either term.

      @@TravellerHike I'm sorry but it doesn't fit well with my channel. I focus on Landscapes because I'm a landscape photographer. There is though a good piece in the official Affinity workbook which explains how to create a brush to simulate a beard (1-2 days growth). I think you could probably use something like that to cover over he beard.

      You had me scratching my head for a while because I couldn't understand what you might be seeing. After thinking about it for a while, I'm guess you have turned on the Subtitles/Captions on TH-cam. Try hovering your mouse over the video when it's playing. You will then see some icons appear along the bottom right of the video. One of these will be for the Captions/Subtitles and you should be able to click it to turn them off. If you are referring to something else in the video please let me know and I will try to help.
