Bushcrafting Primitive Survival Fishing Hooks (That Actually Catch Fish!) | Catch & Cook

  • Greg found success with his dogbane line, so he decides to handcraft primitive survival hooks out of wood, bone, and a NEW idea. He takes his bushcraft tackle to the lakes for a test and manages to land trout for a Catch and Cook!
Greg is a self-taught survivalist from Canal Flats, British Colombia, who, since he was a boy, has read nearly every book on the topic. When he is not out in the wilderness, he is a professional dry-waller. He started his first bow drill fire when he was thirteen and spent the next forty years learning bushcraft and studying plants and edibles. He has even developed some of his own survival techniques and is a skilled hunter with both a bow and a slingshot.

already have caught a 30# Blue Cat off of these (going to try to get a 60#+ next year). th-cam.com/users/postUgkxzXmlErSqVAEGWFEKO530BvTqFDw53QW3 Definitely very strong, and sharp. Additionally, the gap is wide enough to actually hook a fish (not always the case with circle hooks). I purchased the 8/0, but probably should have got the 9/0 (they seem slightly smaller than other 8/0 hooks). Additionally, having the point in-line helps if you drift fish. I have yet to get a serious snag with one of these hooks.

I was born and raised in Nova Scotia, moved to B,C in my 20's lived all over BC, the Yukon and Alberta. Now I'm 61 living in the Ottawa Valley. This is the largest town (17,000)I've lived in in 60 years. I like your content, the straight hook (gorge hook) works best made out of a sliver of bone. I'm impressed by your knowledge of wild plants, vital for survival or just plain enjoyment of a few days in the bush. The more you know the less you need to carry.

Hey Greg, the toggle style hooks work well. I used to catch Bluegill with them as a kid. Unlike all of the other designs, they can't get unhooked because they wedge in the mouth. Just keep the pressure on and pull them straight in quickly. Using the right bait as part of the design is important, like a nightcrawler that slides up and keeps the line straight and the tip sticking out. You can even feed a small strong bone toggle hook through a nightcrawler to the tail area so its like a worm with a barbed tail and your worm stays on the string to save bait. The best part is the simple skinny easy to swallow profile, and it doesn't even need to be very sharp to get wedged in. Also unlike J hooks that have to be set in, there is no way for the fish to unhook it. Definitely worth mastering the toggle hook especially since you can get very small fish with it to use for fish or trap bait. Thank you for the videos and keep them coming. All the best!

I've always kept a roll of thick gauge wire in my bag with a leatherman multi-tool to make my own hooks.
I cut ½ an inch of wire and twist one end into a loop to tie line onto and bend the hook end the cut the hook tip at an angle to make it sharp, make smaller hooks as they won't bend as easy, I can get probably 1000 hooks from one roll of wire.
I also like to use thick guitar picks for makeshift arrowheads.

    Super Video 👍👍👍
A frayed fishing Line is a great advantage.
Carp anglers user them consciously, because fishes don't see a line, they see something like a plant. It is a great camouflage.
