Good observation. That's why I like him.
Only the second video I’ve watched of Bob Hansler but what I love about his videos over every other survivalist I’ve watched is how chill he is. He’s not trying to be Bear Grills. He’s just enjoying being in the wild and taking us along with him.
That is the first time I've ever seen anyone fish with natural materials, And I have to say its one of the most educational videos I've seen today. Good job

The contents of this video are not things a typical school would teach.
Your dog is a picky eater. My dog would have been eyeballing me and salivating the whole time. Great video.
Tim Smith that dog must get bacon wrapped steak at home.
My dog would have been barking at the fire while the fish cooked.
@@jonathans.9372 every dog I've had could eat all day as long as it was good food.
The dog is smart! The fish were stuffed with onions. Onions, garlic, ramps, etc can/will make a dog sick. It destroys their red blood cells. There were only small amounts in the fish and it was the meat that he was trying to feed the dog. However the toxins are cumulative, so it might only take a small amount. I just went through this with my chocolate lab. She loves to play ball. being very unlike her while I wasn’t home, she grabbed an onion off the counter and played ball with it. Four days later I thought she was going to die.
This makes me smile... We took my 6 yo grandson boating last weekend and while we were in the cove swimming I made him a fishing pole like this and he was thrilled. Grandma's cool ya know.

Mr. Hansler, I’m aware that I am one of many folks writing comments on your videos. I just want you to know this is the first time time I’ve ever commented on TH-cam (or any other social media place). I work in Austin in the tech industry. I own 34 acres 40 miles east of Austin and have lots of rattlesnakes. I was raised on a ranch of 1300 acres in north Texas that was started by my great grandfather. I’ve been taught a lot about country living by my father and his father. I’m 32, I’ve cowboy’d, I’ve welded for oil energy production, and I spent five years in college before I wound up in the video game industry. Never, have I learned more about Texas, living in the country, and respect for our nature than since I’ve been following you on TH-cam. I’m saying thanks and I’m hoping your health is well. Thanks again, you’re the real thing if I’ve ever seen it my friend

Brother, you are the real deal. You started with nothing but a knife and you got dinner right in front of you I Truly appreciate your skills
Bob's calm mastery of the skills he presents is very impressive....a joy to watch. I'm sure he could have schooled early Native Americans back in the day.
I've hiked and backpacked solo for decades and NEVER ONCE thought about wrapping some fishing line around my walking stick! Thanks for the tip.
Here's one for folks who've never made cordage (string, line, rope, etc): practice the technique with unwaxed dental floss. It's cheap, easily available and works really well. You'll astound yourself, and you'll be learning an ancient survival skill that most of the people in the world no longer know.
Great video!
I love how the dog sits there in the water like a gator
Hello Bob.
I am an 'older' man, and I've served in the USMC. While in the Corps, I used one of those cheap 'survival' knives to prove a point to my fellow Marines. Most of whom had never set foot out of a large city. Whereas I had grown up tramping the woods and streams in rural Michigan with my Father and Brother.
My dad was, as am I, of the same mind as you. 'Be Prepared'. Yes, you may never need what you pack into the woods, but if you do need it... you'll need it badly. So, the extra weight and encumbrance is a very minor thing as opposed to needing something, and realizing you left it behind, far away.
Back to the cheap knife. It had fish hooks, line, compass, a ring saw, sewing needle, some thread, and a couple of small lead weights. Using my K-Bar, I had a pole in practically no time. A bit of dry wood worked as a bobber, and worms are everywhere.
In three or four of hours, I had myself almost a dozen fish. All about hand sized. Mostly bluegills and sunfish. But to me, the main catch was a nice Carp, about 2 1/2 feet long. I did the same as you did with the small panfish, skewered over a low fire. But the Carp, I cleaned out and made very sure to get the 'mud vein' as well.
Carp are NOT native to America but were introduced by European sports fishermen and they spread everywhere. The mud vein on a Carp is its natural defense against being eaten.
I gutted the carp and laid him out, in his scales, over a woven mat of thin sticks over a bed of coals. I used water to 'baste' the fish as it cooked, to keep it moist. I could have just as easily wrapped it in a cocoon of grass and 'steamed' it in its skin and scales.
I also roasted a few dozen nuts after piercing their shells, to dry the nut inside, inside its husk. Hardest part was making the fire. Which, since I was making a point, I refused to use matches or a lighter, both of which I did have, as well as a fire starter kit.
Instead, I made a point of finding some flint and using the back of my K-bar to get the sparks needed to ignite my tinder.
The guys were amazed that one could catch fish so easily, and cook them over an open fire. All sampled everything, including the wild onion and diced Morell mushrooms I had stuffed the smaller fish with. Several balked at eating the carp, but when they saw me munching away and obviously enjoying it, they broke down and tried some. Carp, either steamed or, grilled over a bed of coals, is a very tender and tasty meal. the flesh is white, light, and has a delicate flavor. Keeping it moist is key to not having tough meat to chew.
In any case, I proved that they could survive easily in a forest full of food if they knew what to look for, how to prepare it, how to cook it, and... were prepared enough.
The fact that I won 20 bucks off of each and every one of them is not really relevant. I proved that even if the commissary truck didn't arrive, no one would starve if one was prepared.
Knowledge of how to 'survive' is something that should be kept alive and passed on to every generation. One can never know what the future holds ( air burst EMP blast that 'kills' our technological society? ), and being prepared can keep you alive to live another day, to find even better ways to survive down the road.
A good knife, a small hatchet, and enough gear to fill a backpack can see one living primitively, but not starving long enough to find better tools or help.
Speaking Frank-ly
Oh, I should mention WHY I grilled the carp the way I did. Laying it out in it's skin and scales and basting it to keep it moist ( if not doing a survival thing, one can do this easily with a bbq grill and a bit of melted butter with seasonings added ). Grilling the fish this way causes the bones to curl up out of the flesh, making them dead easy to pluck away. Leaving only the nicely moist meat laying on a 'plate' of its skin and scales. Which you will find, if you try this, is simple to just slide off and onto a plate. Carp is a 'boney' fish, and most won't eat it because they either do not clean the mud vein, or hate the bones. This method deals with both issues and leaves only the light, flakey flesh that can be easily slid from the skin and scales.
Just a thought,
Frank-ly speaking.
Awesome, Im going to show my nephew's how to put one together. This is what school's should be teaching . Thanks brother.

Awesome video ......didnt realize 30 min passed......we did similar stuff growing up in the Caribbean islands.
Thanks for the video.
It was great to see the natural materials of Texas. A whole different climate than the Northern Pacific rain forests.
Extremely different from what I have here in northeast Oklahoma and it's only a 4 hour drive to Texas from here, maybe less.
But within Texas:
in the northeast is more heavily wooded and hilly with lots of streams and small bodies of water
in the western central area you are getting into semi-arid, the trees are more like bushes and few sources of water except shortly after rain
Those are the only two areas of Texas I can speak intelligently about as I haven't spent much time in any other areas. Having said that, Oklahoma is somewhat the same. As you move from east to west, the terrain changes as does the climate (somewhat) along the same lines.
Been wondering for some time about the edible things I know about in northeast Oklahoma, as in how wide spread is/are lamb's quarter? Sand plum trees? Blackberries? Mulberries? Polk? Cattails?
Did learn a couple of things from the video, though. Briar shoots are edible. Making string/line/twine from yucca leaves. I knew about prickly pear 'apples' but had never heard when is best to harvest them.
Thanks for a great video!

I do not usually praise or give compliments to ANY 'survivalist' types here on youtube, but YOU,Sir, deserve it. You are perhaps the best 'improvised/survival-type' fisher anywhere! I gotta say, I absolutely love this dude and this channel. I was a vegetarian for 12 years for many reasons, one main reason being that I live in a place where I didn't feel I had to eat animals to survive, and I wanted to give it a try to see what the other side was like. But I always maintained the attitude that there is no issue in eating animals provided one is respectful and humane such as Bob when hunting for food. Even my current vegetarian friends love this channel and hope this attitude and way of life eventually becomes the norm. Great channel and content Bob! :)
FINALLY a good vid on making cordage, the same technique works using thin treebark...
In '85 my grampa took me fishing for the first time that I recall. We got up before dawn, dug worms, walked through a little wood maybe a mile to a 'friends' pond, he showed me how to choose a stick, he had line and some hooks, he showed me how to make a simple pole... I even found a red and white bobber floating in the reeds which he helped me draw out and attach to my rig. One of my only memories of him but dang if it's not a good one! Thxs for the video, it reminded me of him.
Oh, yeah, we caught a bunch of perch, or so he said. We ate them, big and small.
Nice work on this. I'll have to give this another try on some pan fish, those gorge hooks need time to be swallowed, hard to do on trout in the hang-ups.

Is this how a raw Texan speaks? Theres something stylish about it and more importantly, something rustic and natural, a natural thing that a person from anywhere in the world can identify with. I mean, in my town, old tough men speaks jus like this, and they know stuff just like this. My salutes. You guys are the real natural human thing, and maybe thats why all of them other ones from other countries relate to u and speak the same style no matter what the language is (i mean only the raw natural guys). Theres just something universally common about you rare lot around the world. The things u endure, the things you eat, the way you carry on unlike some city folks who wud just say yuk, freak out , run and eventually die prematurely. Once again, respect to you. Thanks for showing us a glimpse :)
As a Texan, old enough to remember when almost all boys were in the Boy Scouts and such skills were considered essential training (although not necessarily all scout troops teach or taught how to harvest and prepare cactus), I appreciate very much what Bob is sharing. Prior to WWII, 95% of Americans lived in rural settings and were likely to have a good grasp of the things Bob shared. Today, sadly, upwards of 99% of Americans live in cities, crammed together like cattle (or sheep) in slaughter pens. These skills (and the ability to look a snake in the eyes and not flinch as he steals your fish) are what are going to ensure that "We the People" survive when the SHTF. God Bless Bob.
You're a good person because snake and crawfish would have been on the menu as well.
Glo Avenger That’s what I was saying. I would have at least eaten the crawfish.

Can you eat water snakes?
Unless you puke your guts out eating something with an exoskeleton, like I do.
His chill with that snake catching his fish off the line leaves me wanting that kind of calm.
