Fallen trees are a good reminder of what to look for when building a camp. I've seen large branches fall on quiet sunny day, perhaps water logged from a recent rain and out of nowhere down it comes.
You should have included a serious warning on this video. This technique would be illegal in a whole lot of places for multiple reasons. It's designed to be left unattended, it's an indiscriminate fish-killer, plus a hazard to birds, amphibians, and other people -- it's a poaching rig by its very nature. This should only be used in a wilderness emergency survival situation where you are having to gather food for multiple people who can't even move to get their own.
I won't get dramatically furious about it here, but you are getting "good enough to give other people bad ideas." This comes with a responsibility to teach conservation.

For anyone concerned about Lilly cutting down hazel, it is one of the best trees that can be coppiced. If you cut the sapling at an angle so it's not flat and does not catch rain, the base of the sapling will sprout "suckers" around it and cause more shoots to grow up over time. This is called coppicing, and it is an ancient practice that has been used for thousands of years to produce lots of thin wooden shafts from a single base. The trees are pruned down to the stump every 3-5 years, depending upon the needs of the person managing & harvesting the copse (a small stand of woods wherein coppicing is or was practiced), and it can be a healthy part of sustainable forestry management.
Additionally, since coppiced saplings tend to be used in basketweaving or hurdle-making (wattle-woven walls for gardens or even wattle-and-daub homes, which can include the Tudor beam-and-plaster style popular in Europe for a long period of time), it can help lock away the carbon dioxide absorbed by those trees for many decades, if not centuries. On top of that, if several saplings are allowed to grow to the point that nuts are produced, it will produce more nuts (food for humans and animals) than a single tree trunk would support.
Hazel nuts can start producing nuts at 2-5 years old, so you can have a cycle of tree growth that includes nut harvesting as well as timber harvesting. While nut trees for mass commercial production are often kept pruned to one tree trunk, smaller scale (subsistence) hazelnut groves can have patches of trees at various stages of pruning, growth, and nut harvesting. The only trick is to ensure that you have several different cultivars in your grove, as they require cross-pollination from genetically different varieties to produce nuts.

That line looks like the ones my grandfather use to put up when I was a teen and went fishing with him. The only difference is he didn't have any alarms on the lines. He would place the lines down the local creek and go back and forth to check them and came home with many fish after a day out in the woods. My dad and I used to set up throw lines. Tie a line to a strong flexible branch on the river bank. We set multiple lines and checked them every 1 to 2 hours during the night. We also set out trought lines from bank to bank on the river. You need a canoe or row boat to maintain it. We always caught a lot of fish that way. Mostly catfish. Good video. Reminded me of other ways to fish.
I always wondered why when I watched the survivalist guys like Less Stroud our Bear Grylls, why in the world they didn't set bank lines? We would check our lines a couple of times at night and in the morning and would invariably have at least a few catfish or drum. Also, turtle traps are dog simple and would provide bait or a meal depending on how picky or hungry you were.

@@slowpokebr549 same, on narrow rivers it was set one side of your line and throw the other end over, set snares along the bank and setlines across the river over a hundred yards or so then cross and set snares down the other side, securing your second end of setlines as you go.
Halfhour walk and you have maybe 20 snares and 4 lines with 5 leaders on each, thats 40 chances of dinner in a very short time.
Plus normal foraging as you go ofc.
Great stuff, Lilly! Awesome fishing "trap" and I'm surprised that no one on the Alone series used this method of fishing (without the alarm). Setting up wire snare for small critters with the audible alarm would be extremely helpful in a personal survival situation. BTW congratulations on your wonderful success! Well deserved.

here in the US we have a big problem with an insect called the "emerald ash borer" which kills ash trees. the ash tree that fell by your river camp may have been affected. also the auto fishing pole is a very cool idea !!! looks like you found a new companion who seemed to be enjoying a good romp in the woods

Thats a good one SL, when I was young, and living in the country we used that method we would find a small tree close enough ,we would just shape the pole. permanent fishing pole, if you keep it groomed. Good fishing methode, when living near a stream.

Uhm, it works, I have used similar setup for 40 years, my grandparents did... I have found that rod only is about as effective if you can see the rods all the time and have a slack bight with release.
The release is merely 5-7mm diameter stick 20mm lomg with notch allowing 1m of line to form a bight (one end is knoted to line bight is made and line lightly pushed into nothch until held there, this allows fish to swim 1m or so before being caught short hooking it. Downside is fish may get eaten by pike... if not picked up asap.

Very good idea, Lilly. You don't have to use it if you dont want to be located or don't want to hear it but it is a good alternative signalling device and perimeter alarm (among several other uses) as well as a great fishing alarm for this sort if trap. And they're cheap. Smart for the prepared survivalist IMHO. Great job Lilly!

My son uses this in the creek. Catches a lot of small fish and other things, then releases. Even caught a snake once!

The constrictor knot was slipping due to the angle at which it was being pulled. It is great when it forms a square angle with the base, perpendicular to it, but horrible when its parallel to it (which is the case). I would use a tight bowline instead!!! THIS IS A STATIC FISHING RIG. A Fishing Basket is a trap same as a fishing weir. Because fish can break these lines and can get free. Whereas in the trap they CAN NOT.

Lilly the only time a fish will not bite is when the water is too murky. The cold will not matter because people do ice fishing and I catch a lot of fish in below 0 winters. A great automatic fishing poll, I love it.

I just use a bell. That alarm would drive my dogs crazy and probably scare away every living thing with in a kilometer. The idea is great, just 2 loud. If I woke up hearing that, I would think either my house was on fire or my car had been broken into (Panic mode). Hope you appreciate my honesty. Love your channel!

I am a 68-year-old guy with heart disease So for safety reasons I have built a bug out camp in my yard. I Want to thank you for all your videos. Because of you, I am able to try all these things. I have a swimming pool (Lake Lilly) and a jacuzzi (Dax Pond) I still miss him. I have my dog, Bandit, Who camps with me. All in all, I am enjoying my retirement because I have a new hobby. An easier way to make a spring pole trap (which is what this is) is two cut two saplings of the appropriate size leaving two short pieces of a branch, one on each piece. One is long enough to solidly pound or secure into the ground or use one already growing there if it is in an appropriate place.
Each short piece of branch points in the opposite direction. Attach the line on the short piece as she does etc. Hook one piece of branch over the other with the spring pole under tension. Adjust the length of the branch pieces so it is secure yet easy to disengage if a fish pulls. Hook your pinky fingers over each other to get the idea! Much easier and faster than cutting notches….no need for toggle sticks at all! I have made animal traps this way for many years and can attest to their effectiveness!

A small set of pruning in shear and a medium axe are my preferred tools for this…ax to cut and pound the stick into the ground, pruners to cut the branches and easily adjust them! You’re welcome!

I've fished rivers pretty much my whole life and been quite successful _but_ I recently learned two incredible tips from a river fishing guide where to put your line! 1st, fish don't hang around in fast water (which I'd already realized years ago) so focus on finding where the water is running _slowest_ at, preferably a calm pool or pocket is best. But the _real trick_ is look at the surface of the water and watch where the bits of froth and FOAM are all funneling through. Those will always flow along the same specific pathways on the surface like little roads, and the FOAM is where all the FOOD is! Any insects or other easy meals naturally funnel along the lines of the foam, so find a spot where the foam enters a slow flowing area to set your lines. 👍

Pretty neat rig.. Though, we have plenty of success using simple limb lines without a trigger. But that could be because we typically use circle hooks and catch catfish with them.
As a fisherman, a small enough hook you can just deploy on the river bank with enough weigh and the fish will guy hook themselves. Just secure line properly.

I do the same only I use the small cow bells you can buy on most fishing department aisles.
Lilly, check out some of the super lines. The stuff made of spectra or dyneema. Super small diameter and abrasion resistance are the claim to fame. Near zero stretch.
UV resistant.
A 150 yard spool goes a long way.
You can sew with it and make some serious snares as well as fish it.
I know you can get more than 100 lb test and more. 🎣👍🏻🔨

Great trap and handy having that Ash tree falling right near the camp...Ash burns when green, although better when unseasoned...but still ideal. Looks like you won't have any trouble keeping warm next visit there 😉

Very nice....the trigger is much slippery than I thought it would be. I have seen similar types but more in the figure 4 configuration. However, they would also drive in a sick 90 degrees perpendicular to the anchor stick and wrap the free fishing line around that stick so that it would be pulled out from the side instead of the front, making it a bit more slippery. Yours however seemed to do the job just fine. The alarm is a nice touch as well. The ash can make some great firewood. You're set!
