Kentucky Bluegrass Lawns In Summer Stress and Recovery | NWIndiana Part 1

  • In this video I show you Kentucky Bluegrass lawns as they look after the recent summer heat wave. One lawn at a public site that is well irrigated, another that is a home site and not irrigated.
I also remove some dead holly bushes that I planted 13 years ago and discover why they did not survive.
In part 2 we will look at more stressed lawns and my eldest son and I put down an application of Milorganite as well as I take a trip to the Home Depot and see what's on the shelves this time of year.

I live in Northern Illinois and a lot of the damage you are seeing on the bushes are from the polar vortex in early February. Burning bushes and stuff like that got hit the hardest. Most needed to be cut back all the way to the ground and they come right back.

Good call! I hadn't thought of that but you are right - super deep freezes and those overgrown holly and barberrys probably just got dessicated big time.

Lcn please make a video showing how you prune. I'm a little scared when I hear "trim them all the way back". Also don't want to hack them up at the wrong time of year.

Love your videos. I have learned so much from you about lawn maintenance . I have almost 10k square ft St Augustine yard that I maintain myself. One thing Ive never heard you mention about grass cutting is how landscape companies can destroy your yard. Take this as case and point. My neighbor's yard is full of weeds and the company uses their $5000 mower to cut the grass in minutes. All of those weed seeds and pods are now stuck on their mower and transferred to the next yard they cut. Eventually all the yards they cut now have weeds.

Arrgh , axes and shovels with no boots on. My grandfather would tell me about cutting timber in the 60's, blue mountains Australia.
No ambulance or care flight in those days, one fella split his foot right down the middle up to his ankle with an axe. No first aid or proper kit. So to save his life they hollowed out a bag of Flower(sterile enough) , encased his foot in it for the 2 day horse ride to hospital. And the nut didn't fall far from the tree. hope this makes ya put boots on

They’re probably using a larger mower. The blade is staying straight over a larger area so if the ground is angled steeper then 3” over the distance of the mower it cuts one size short and it dies from being scalp. Not surprising there’s a curb and bed right there. I bet they dipped in the bed once and it just hasn’t come back

    • @luckyb3859
      @luckyb3859 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Yep. Same thing occurs when a rotary deck blade traverses a converse hill surface. In 2 dimensions, the horizontal turning rotary mower blade scalps a chord in a circle of depth equal to the versine, or versin(ϴ)=1 - cosine(ϴ).
In 3d it would be a spherical contoured surface, but what turf undulation is a perfect spherical surface? None, zero. Just a bald spot. Go figure.

  • @WolverineFFJ

To help prevent roots encircling like that, there is a simple fix. At time of planting, take a sharp knife and make 2 or 3 vertical scores (cuts) on the root ball before planting.

I'm watching this video since northern Indiana has had an unusual summer so far with consecutive mid 90 days and little to no rain. My grass was on steroids in the spring and the greenest it has ever been.. but now a lot of it is stressed no matter how much I water it. I know nitrogen would be bad at this time, but would Hydretain and iron be okay/help at all with greening while its in the 90s?

give it another few weeks and you will have some rain and cooler temps to help your hand watering

Great tutorial! Think safety first! Wear proper foot gear when working in those landscape beds.

The mower they're using probably doesn't have the balance mechanism. So when you go uneven terrain the blade cuts at the angle instead of leveling the cut

Llama Cebu to mean a floating deck. It could be that or the deck is fixed. Or the anti scalp wheels aren’t there.

Those bushes might have died from the winter vortex. I lost a ton this year.

I think some of those spots in the motel grass may be from dogs using it as a restroom
