Nice one Phil, I've been hanging all grades of lining paper on countless walls/ceilings, since the 70's. Principles and methods have never changed, other than the use of plastic spatulas, steel straight edge & paste the wall method, which I absolutely prefer for all wall coverings nowadays. Butt joints, yes, but I do work with experienced professionals who leave a 1mm gap, mist coat, then very fine joint fill, when painting to a finish. Great video as ever, cheers mate.
And then you ask them, why do you leave a gap to fill... Having to sand and where the filler is you look smoother than the grain of the paper. Just butt it up lol
Another great vid and lesson, cheers Phil! Its brilliant to see your viewings going up and other youtubers mentioning you on their channels . Love the caulk trick for the top cut....a top tip. A feature of wallrock i dont think you mentioned is that it doesn't tear easily giving which makes it ideal for first time DIYers. I'll try that one time caulk. Another decorator got me onto Crown caulk. Comes in 2 or 3 flexability/ movement types. Very reasonably priced too.
There’s a wallrock fibreliner for papering over and a wallrock fibreliner smooth for painting now phil. The smooth has a smoother surface on one side mate. You cant really tell until you get the first coat of paint on. The normal furs up quite a bit and the smooth doesn’t 👍
Many thank. Unfortunately some would say different lol Please like and subscribe... Two videos go out a week.. Monday and Thursday. Xmas it'll be a bit different though
Hello Phil, thankyou for all your informative videos. May I ask, if you were to emulsion over your linning papered walls would you Gardz the wall first prior to emulsioning? Cheers Steve.
Nope. No need the Gardz unless a problem surface... Lining paper isn't a problem surface. Depending on what emulsion you use, you may want a splash of water in it to help it along, then straight out for the second coat. It'll depend what you're using though.
Excellent video..What happens when the Boss wants a change of top paper? Do you have to strip both the finish paper and the liner before relining and hanging the new finish paper?
Well that depends if you've only done it the day before. LoL It depends who did the previous papering and whether you'd risk working over someone else's work.
Nice tip on the adhesive... I've been using Albany ready mixed for years but it's become so expensive, I'll be interested to see how the wickes stuff compares... Its half the price!
I’ve been trying to take off emulsion off walls back to plaster. What is the best way to achieve the end goal. Is there a product like paint stripper for emulsion
Instructions say that if using with fireliner it must be applied with reinforced side to the wall. Can you advise please? Is it the grey side on view before I do fireliner?
Hi phil. What would tell you if you can do just a paste prime or needs something more like gardz? Porus are you talking about a dry chalky surface? Also if you stripe wallpaper and find a silk emulsion what prep would you need? Thanks x
silk emulsion or an eggshell wall (like what you find in older houses) are a dream to strip wall paper off from, as theyre not a porous surface you can hang straight onto it. Fill and sand anything as normal, touch in the filler prior to paper with your paste/size.. away you go. If the walls are good condition.. thin down tub paste as your size ideal.. if it looks like the wall has issues, dry, powdery, cheap emulsion etc.. gardz a better option. One coat is enough.. don't miss anywhwere.. you'll know if you miss an area ;) There's no need to then size over the gardz.
it's moved on.. the graphite has a good layer of paper over it, that keeps it from breaking up on you.. plus you can butt it up and not cutting through itlike previously
Bought my first house and there's lots of hairline cracks and the walls are abit all over the place. Lots of people have recommended wallrock fibreliner smooth. I will be filling and sanding all the cracks but the walls have all been painted in vinyl silk. Can I apply size then the next day paste the wall and hang or do all the walls need sanding with it been vinyl silk? Thanks
if the walls are vinyl silk... you don't need to size those as its not a porous surface, if there's filler, its worth spot priming those area as they'll suck the paste in.

Sorry to hear that mate, as a pro deccy it always bothers me to hear when someone has had a bad experience. Did you go for the cheapest quote? Did you check he was qualified and insured or check reviews? Did he have a website you could see past jobs and testimonies? I quote alot of jobs these days that the customer was unhappy with the last guy and then you find out they paid £250 for a hall, stairs and landing!

@@PBYM79thanks 👍🏻 yeah someone we have used before proper business usually does a great job, personal recommendation and has website etc. not the cheapest quote as I never do that. Otherwise was a good job but the decision to line one wall with wallrock, and perhaps not giving enough time to get it right, has left us with a poor finish. I was worried about the seams showing and reassured they wouldn’t (which they don’t) but the contours you can see when the light hits it and the lumps where filler is sitting proud of the wall are not what I expected at all. I paid for the job as it was finished and looked great in the early evening light but the next day I was shocked. Didn’t have the courage to call him back at the time so it’s probably my own fault for letting it go. Live and learn eh!
@@ProfessionalPainterDecoratorthanks Phil, did all the due diligence as above and used before just for some reason this lining hasn’t gone well possibly rushed but the same was due on HSL and I cancelled and instead have meticulously filled and sanded the lot myself so as to specifically avoid lining it. My main concern with the above job is when we come to decorate again how do you get emulsioned lining down and re-done properly. If it weren’t for the fact we have used the company before and he is a nice bloke I would have had him back to rectify but it felt awkward and I naively didn’t know how good a finish to expect as we have never had anything lined before. Next time I know who to use instead for anything I can’t do myself 👍🏻
@Liverpool1ne that's a shame, I have seen that before where the last guy didn't sand as well as he should have before papering. I always sand my filler as though I'm painting, no comebacks that way. I'm guessing too late to whip it down, sand wall back and reline? Are you sure it's the filler behind and not just a lumpy wall that might have been better with a quick skim? Either way never a great thing when the customer isn't 100% happy with a job they've shelled out for. I'm working in a house at the moment where someone has put emulsion paper straight over a couple of wall plugs in the carzey area. They stick out like a badgers backside!
