I love genesis, I grew up with my dad playing the albums in the car, so cool to see someone from my generation revisit this bands material and make a video out of it. They are timeless, still great today.
I used to play them in my car in the 70's and I LOVE to listen to young musicians playing that beautiful NOT simplistic music for the new generations !
Selling England... is a true masterpiece, mainly due to Tony Banks and Steve Hackett's work (apart from the other guys contribution of course). Have been listening to these songs since 1975, and I'm still astonished by the cleverness and the beauty. Great video for great music. Thanks a lot.
Thanks for this Antoine. If I'm not mistaken, The Cinema Show intro is the work of Rutherford, not Hackett. Like more than half of Genesis guitar parts at the time. Like Hackett once said, Mike could give any 12 strings players a run for their money. J'espère que le spectacle de Hackett à Québec en mars ne sera pas annulé!
Very nice video! The intro of cinema show was solely written and played by Mike Rutherford - he loved using alternative tunings back then. There are a bunch of good tutorials that show the proper tuning and how to play the intro on YT. Still loved your version!
By _underrated_ - music YT's most frequent comment, people usually mean not enough people actually listening to and appreciating somebody's music. With Genesis, there's a different peculiar trouble: many of those who call themselves fans break their output in two parts (sometimes three) and only choose one, rejecting the other. The key thing is to learn to enjoy the evolution of their music rather than wish to keep it firmly closed within a timeframe labelled '73 or '74 and refuse to develop.
This is a great job in combining a presentation / explanation / interpretation and a lesson. It is revealing to carefully listen to detailed excerpts that otherwise (on the record, with all the arrangement and pace) may escape your attention for years. Very fine job indeed plus impressive guitar skill plus a very pretty sound.
Tu viens de m'identifier l'accord "chair de poule" qui me fait vibrer à chaque fois que j'écoute "Cinema Show" (le #10). C'est ma préférée des préférées de Genesis! Quel voyage, et quel solo de Banks!
Thanks so much, Antoine! (Well done) I saw Genesis in the early '70s doing the "Selling England by the Pound" at the Université de Montréal. Fantastic sound and the first time I heard a mellotron Live. Steve Hacket and Mike Rutherford should be proud of you for sharing this..
Hi Antoine. What an unexpected lesson! My all time favourite Genesis album. You mention Firth of Fifth which contains my favourite guitar lead of all time!
Hey Antoine! Thank you for covering my favorite guitarist, Steve Hackett! I'm going to re-watch this video several times. Are you familiar with Hackett's solo albums? You may want to have a look at Voyage of the Acolyte (1975), especially the last song Shadow of the Hierophant which is so atmospheric. His 1979 album Spectral Morning is a bit more ethereal and should please - I think - to most ambient music fans.
Thank u for sharing your wonderful knowledge of my favourite Genesis album...clean, neat playing and excellent explanations on chords and progressions... beautiful sound too..❤❤❤
Antoine, you are so positive and full of amazing knowledge that inspires your viewers to play outside the box. Your like a breathe of fresh air during this pandemic! Cheers!
Extraordinaire, un vrai moment de pédagogie, c'est hyper précis, hyper détaillé et ça permet de cerner ce qui fait vibrer les cordes sensibles dans les harmonies de Rutherford, Banks et hackett! Génial!
dude, I always dreamed about a video with this very specific subject; thank you!! please, consider doing a similar one with Genesis's self-titled album!
Brilliant, so many things discovered on your demo, from a superb album, glad you are a fan of Steve Hackett, such an influencial guitarist, Genesis missed him when he left, they were never as good without Steve.
I have to admit, I don't know much of Genesis' music after the mid 70's. All my favorite albums are with Gabriel and Hackett (Selling England being my absolute favorite, that's why I did this one). Maybe someday I will dig deeper in their discography, but there is so much music to listen to! It's hard to get to know all these bands, as a young man who has not lived through these eras :-)
Great lesson, I play these tunes for years but, as I don't like More Fool Me, I never treid to play it and so didn't notice the detune trick. Thanks a lot
Your videos are awesome, i love that, i love Hackett and Genesis thanks for make a Lot of awesome videos i having now a great musical trip exploring new forms of chords
Ahhhh! Selling… Le meilleur album de tous les temps, selon moi. J’avais 11 ans en octobre 73 lorsque l’album est sorti et je vivais alors en Angleterre! Quelle époque!
Thanks Antoine, so much to explore here. These videos are really great, more Genesis albums like Trick and Wind & Wuthering would be very welcome and what about some Rush too?
I'm probably going to cover many other bands before I come back to different albums of bands I have already covered. Rush is definitely in my plans for this year. Which album should I choose?
Excellent dissection, your passion for the music is evident! I should mention that on More Fool Me, while the album version is somewhere between Eb and E, the live versions are definitely in E. I wonder if this is because they recorded it too fast on SEBTP, and so vari-sped it down.
Is the progression in Dancing with the moonlit knight an earlier song? I heard the melody the other day on “ tranquility” type album playing in a massage spa. The triad part you showed.
Amazing study and playing, man. I just want to pick up my guitar right now and start rippin' through these chords. What reverb are you using right now? (either brand or type) Sounds lovely
Have you seen my video ''7 Tips For Guitar Players With Small Hands''? You might find a few helpful tips. It's here: th-cam.com/video/krUaYKNFwYA/w-d-xo.html
The intro to "The Cinema Show" is actually created and played by Mike Rutherford on Electric 12-string. Tuning : dD gG aD eG bB eE
I love genesis, I grew up with my dad playing the albums in the car, so cool to see someone from my generation revisit this bands material and make a video out of it. They are timeless, still great today.
Same here! We listened to we can’t dance when I was little

What a treasure to humanity. Music that will never be the same… Thanks so much for this great video.
My pleasure!
the most romantic of all rock bands. thanks for the great lesson!

Awesome job man, Hackett's playing was sheer genius.
Thanks for watching!
Omg you re kidding me, I wasn't prepared, such a pleasure to hear this. Thank you, lot of work!!!

Tu as bien raison, j'étais sur le pilote automatique en disant Hackett tout le long. Merci de m'avoir corrigé!
Very nice video! The intro of cinema show was solely written and played by Mike Rutherford - he loved using alternative tunings back then. There are a bunch of good tutorials that show the proper tuning and how to play the intro on YT. Still loved your version!
Absolute gold -- to-the-point video production, crystal-clear explanations, perfect playing, nice chord selection! Thank you very much!
Bravo! I never heard so detailed explanation on the Genesis tracks...
Genesis is really underrated. their compositions are awesome

Hey, what a great song choice! When you start the first some chords I am immediately in this inner "film" of Genesis music.
My all time favorite album ever.
Thanks, Bernie. I was born too late for that, but that must have been something!!!
you have a good taste in music in my opinion. at your age it's something special to bring genesis "selling england by the pound" 🙂

I heard Spectral Morning a long time ago, but that are some great suggestions! I need more Hackett in my life, that's for sure :-) thanks Eric!
Eric - 100% agreed! Heirophant is a fascinating song!
Excellent lesson and chord theory overview. Very insightful.
Glad you liked it, Tim! Thanks for watching :-)

Thank you so much, Eric :-)
The reworking of chord 9 is genius, great work
Just shows how good genesis was the early 70.s stuff and of course Mr hackett still turning it out saw them many times in early 70.s brilliant live
Best PROG tutorial EVER !!!!!!! Amazing !!!

Very well presented
Excellent video Antoine! This is one of my all time favorite albums!
No way! Excellent choice :-)
Thanks for this!!

This is excellent, Antoine. These voicings are so cool & have alluded me til now. Merci beaucoup!

Quel guitariste incroyable ce Steve Hackett! Super vidéo - merci!

Inspired music , beautifully revealed . Thank you , Antoine.
in my youth i liked also "lamb lies down on Broadway" from genesis with my favorite pieces "back in nyc" , *+"in the cage" , "lilywhite lilith"
Back in nyc is probably my favorite on side one of lamb. Just kicks ass
Excellent. So good to see an analysis of the best prog rock band ever :).
Please, another lesson on Genesis chords!
Noted! Which other album would you like me to cover?

@Antoine Michaud Lamb lies down on broadway!
This is insane!
Great lesson.
FIFTH OF FIRTH LESSON PLEASE!
Merci Antoine !
This is great content! More of it, please 🙂
I will do. Thanks! :-)
Man ! This video is one of the best (if not the best) on Genesis !!! Do more !!! :D On the Lamb for ex !
Amazing lesson! 👏

Sounds totally awesome
That's what I call "comprehensive". Great job breaking this down, and it all checks "accurate", as opposed to so many online videos. superb!
Bravissino ed interessante lezione
Antoine you are a genius!
Not a genius, just a lover of music and nice guitar chords :-) Thanks, Cergo!
@@AntoineMichaudGuitar it's good that you don't fall for flattery Antoine
I always thought: how Mikael Akerfeldt developed his chords? I think now I have a hint...:)
A masterpiece!
Could you do "Sgt.Pepper's?
Definitely on my list! 😁
I would love to see beatles videos
Beautiful sounds. If my fingers were as long as yours I’d be very happy 😃
I'm sure you can play most of them :-) thanks!
Awesome dude!
👍 well done !!! Cool AF
Next do The Beatles ( if you want to )!
On my list, for sure!
Fantastic,
The second chord moviment was composed by Peter Gabriel.
Great video 👊 💪
Love those Genesis chords. If you know who you are you don't give a damn!
Excellent dissection, your passion for the music is evident! I should mention that on More Fool Me, while the album version is somewhere between Eb and E, the live versions are definitely in E. I wonder if this is because they recorded it too fast on SEBTP, and so vari-sped it down.
Thanks! I think it was common at that time to be ''in the cracks'' between tunings. You can hear that on many other albums in the 70's.
It's the ''WET'' algorithm of the ''Neunaber Immerse MkII''. That's my favorite reverb sound. Thanks, Hiram!
big ups
Thanks for such a great genesis guitar lesson! What brand is your guitar?
It's a Suhr Classic Stratocaster. Thanks for watching!
can you do a tutorial of Moore fool me?
I find these a little more difficult, mainly because I have small hand with a dwarf pinky finger
Have you seen my video ''7 Tips For Guitar Players With Small Hands''? You might find a few helpful tips. It's here: th-cam.com/video/krUaYKNFwYA/w-d-xo.html
Hackett didn't do the Cinema Show intro, Rutherford did.
Correct, my bad.
And the loop ? 🤔
Wonderful ! Have you ever use another pickup besides the neck one?
Honestly, no 😂
i think the last chords from the cinema show from you are not the same as hackett plays (about 20:15) 🌿🙂
Very fresh ! Are you in a special guitar tuning ? Merci
No, standard tuning. I adapted the chords in Cinema Show to be in standard tuning too!
did you study music at university/college?
and ...the lamb?
