    Overall the AT2035 is good on instrument and vocals you can really hear the body and tone using the mic. The AKG220 is was not as good, there’s a harsh frequency near the end that I don’t find pleasing, but it’s still pretty a great overall. They both have low self noise, the AT2035 with 12 and the AKG220 with 16. AT2035 with a SPL of 148 and AKG220 with 135. My choice would be the AT2035

  • @JunkyardSam
    @JunkyardSam 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Wow, this was incredibly helpful, thank you for making this. To my ears the AT2035 seems to be more neutral and the P220 has a more significant high frequency boost. I need a smooth sound so I'll be going with the AT2035. The P220 did sound good with the distorted electric guitar, but I think that's because it boost certain upper mids and high frequencies whereas maybe the AT2035 is more neutral.

    Would you suggest akg p420, at 2035 or lewitt lct 240. Specifically for Female Alto vocals. (kindly consider other options in this range too like mxl 770, Tascam 180, Behringer b1, Se electronics x1a). Hoping to receive your valuable suggestions

      I only have experience with the P2/420 mics and AT 2035 but the P2/420 have a more boost in the high end and would likely allow you to go lighter on the top shelf EQ when mixing.

      @@railcity871 Regardless of sound, I'm leaning more toward the AKG just for the fact that it includes a hard shell aluminum carry case that fits everything while the AT does not. I saw an unboxing video of the AT where it showed that it includes a soft pouch, but that pouch barely fits the shockmount - it wouldn't also fit the mic. C'mon, AT, what are you thinking??

    • @railcity871

      Both are fine and pretty similar imo, especially post-mixing. The AKG will give the raw recording more high end if you want to pre-mix it a little bit. The AT might be a little better if you want more emphasis on the lower frequencies when recording. The AT is also more neutral i.e. it doesn't "hype" the high end.

    If you have a P420, I need to look for that review. I have that 2035, looking to add the P420.

    • @railcity871
      @railcity871  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Funny you should mention it- I thought about doing a P220 vs P420 review (none existed back in 2018) but they sound identical on cardioid mode so I didn't see the point. Because they sound identical I actually use the two mics as overheads when recording drums in a Recorderman-type setup. Then if I ever need an omni mic or anything I have the P420. Anyway, here's what I'm getting at- I can totally shoot a P420 review if there's demand for it, which it sounds like there is. Is there anything in particular you'd like covered in the vid? I was really drawing a blank back in 2018 about what I would cover but perhaps you have some questions I could focus on in the vid.

    • @FullContactDrummer
      @FullContactDrummer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rail City I’m looking for a single large diaphragm condenser as a single room mic. I’d like the multi-pattern just to have options. I’m looking at the P420 and either CAD GXL3000 or M179. I already have two 2035s.

    • @railcity871
      @railcity871  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FullContactDrummer K neat, I'll shoot a P420 room mic vid for drums and guitar before 2020 is done with. Maybe you'll decide on what you want before then, but if not it'll help. The P220 little drum snippet in the vid we are commenting on right now is going to be pretty similar to what the P420 is going to sound like on cardioid if that helps out right now. Like I say, they're the same mic, I'd probably just put it a little further from the drums if it's serving as a true room mic. Omni is the only other setting most people would use for room miking but I'll record figure 8 and supercardioid just for kicks of course.

    • @railcity871
      @railcity871  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would get a Shure SM7B if you're not recording in a treated room. Rap vocals usually don't have much reverb in the final mix and the telltale sign of a very amateur rapper for me at least is bad sounding room reverb, probably picked up via a large body condensor mic. You can't mix that stuff out. An SM7B doesn't pick up any room noise.

    • @railcity871
      @railcity871  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@egegulkaya2525 Those are all large body condensors. As I mentioned, for hip-hop, I would only use those in a well-treated room to avoid bad-sounding reverb. I would go with a Shure SM7B (a dynamic mic) because it gives you a very clean vocal without the need for room treatment. If you can't afford it, save up. It's worth it for the money you're not spending on room treatment. They also sell fast used for about $350 so, if you think about it, you're only spending $50 if you buy one new for $400. Good luck selling any MXL mic used!

    Why’s it say AT2035 large diagram? Does that change anything compared to a normal AT2035?

    • @railcity871
      @railcity871  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The main categories of studio microphones are dynamic, large body (or large diaphragm) condensor, thin body condensor and ribbon. (There are others but these are the main ones.) Large body condensors are used to record basically anything, but they're very popular for vocals. Thin body condensors don't record low, bassy sounds as well as large body condensors so they're usually used for cymbals, acoustic guitars and other "airy" sounds. Large body condensor just means it can be used to record anything, even a kick drum or tuba, unlike a thin body condensor.

    I like the song that you sing. It's really good. I just looked up the artist Alex Cameron. I'll have to listen to some more. I am pleased to see that he is an Aussie like me. Speaking of mics I just bought the AKG P420. I was going to get a Rode NT1 but I came across a really good deal on the AKG and its versatility is appealing, plus I think it sounds good in the reviews. (It hasn't arrived yet).
    On the subject of Alex Cameron I was disappointed to read he can't get radio play in Australia. We have a national "indie/alternative" radio station called Triple J and they won't play his stuff. So he is not that well known here.

      Nice and greetings from the US! I have another vid from about a month ago A/B testing a 220 and a 420 if you're interested. I was surprised to find they do sound different on cardioid, but not by very much. On Alex Cameron, I was obsessed with his first album (that he recorded in 2013 and Secretly Canadian released in early 2016) but everything after that sucked, the hot shot producers Secretly Canadian hooked him up with really did him a disservice imo, and maybe he changed a lot between 2013 and 2017 (when his second album was released.) I saw him live in a basement in Baltimore in 2016 and he said he wanted to be playing big venues, which he pretty much is now, so I guess he's happy (even though I'm not a fan at all anymore.) Violent Soho is another great Aussie band- their 2020 album was A+++! Thanks for watching/reading/listening! I hope the 420 serves you well.
