I dont think you were particularly harsh - thers a LOT of people trying to use the p420 for something it isnt for, and comparing it to mics it isnt meant to compete with. It is a versatile, inexpensive studio instrument mic particularly aimed at recording acoustic instruments - it does a really good job in the role it was designed for, and it can stand in for other purposes, but the insane SPL, the high noise floor, and the detail boost all point to a mic that is tailored for instrument use. I think you could actually have made more of that.
I like that you emphasized the importance of quality creative content vs. the overall quality or slight colorations of the audio. That's something which is easily forgotten, especially to geeky audio nerds or impressionable consumers. 👍
The thing I like about the nt1 is that you basically get exact what you put into it, coming out of it…. Not much colorization, it sounds super close to exact how it was recorded Some people like the sound certain mics give to their voice…. I prefer one that just does it’s job and let’s me color the recording when I’m mixing

I went on a quest to find the best bang for the buck condenser mic for a friend with a very low budget. It had to be a mic that would have a low noise floor, not gain hungry, made of quality, well rounded in lows, mids and highs. I also need a mic that can handle a non treated room or barely treated room. When I went into the local Guitar Center and asked for such a mic the salesman smiled and was elated to show me a recording of his Metal band with aggresive lyrics. He said notice how clear the mic is even with the loud singer. I was impressed that he tracked the whole song with whatever mic it was. He said "Don't be alarmed by the low price of these mics." He then said "Look up as you walk to the mics" he had me close my eyes as he led me to the AKG P series mics. He made me sing loud Rock lyrics and then gentle singer song writer style of singing. I even crooned in them. I liked the AKG 240P and he was like "It gets better" He then had me sing into the AKG P420 and I was blown away how clear and accurate my baritone voice was. He then had his hands covering up the price tags. He asked me what I thought these mics would cost. I said most likely 300,450 and 600 USD?? He said no these are sub 200 dollar mics and they are on sale with the P420 being 159 dollars. The rest is history. I felt like I should have had a mask and gun when I was out of there at 172 dollars. This AKG P420 has a Metal case and a amazingly , mouth droppingly well built shock mount! I will be buying more of these as Christmas and Birthday gifts for my musician friends and karaoke friends. By the way the Rode NT1 sounds good but picks up a mosquito farting from 100 ft away. You will need a fully treated room to use the Rode NT1.
I have tried both of these and I loved the p420 miles better than the Rode NT1. The Rode just had a very annoying low end tone to it that I couldn't get rid off even with EQ changes. I like the AKG P Series. Even the P120 would give Rode NT1 a run for it's money.
NT1 TH-cam summary : excellent mic (Podcaststage) with strong sibilants (AudioHaze, Booth Junkie). If you are mixing songs, use a volume automation to control the sibilants (Produce like a pro). My experience with woodwinds : very true to life once you have found the right placement. For tenor/alto sax : 80 cm at least, mic bent forward, pointing at the middle of the sax. Extremely sensitive to off axis movement : even at this distance, 10 cm on the side change the sound drastically.

Related to what you were saying for sax, whenever I recorded baritone clarinet with it we kept it roughly 60cm away from the source placed above the bell off axis to try and reject some of the key noise and obviously the air coming from the bell.
@@AudioHaze Interesting. I actually found it easier to record the bass clarinet than the saxes, even though it is longer. The mic was pointed at the lower third of the instrument, and I don't think it caught that much air/key noise.

Certainly. The Beta 58A will not be my last microphone. Something completely different though: When i was walking with my Dog, I did let TH-cam play whatever it sees fit. And before I knew, I was deep in Audio Tech Land again! 😆 So this video popped up after like 3 videos of the Booth Junkie and I listened to it, even though I've seen (and commented) it before. For the most part it was, was I remembered of it. And there were to things together, which triggered me to some degree. At 6:40 you talked about the threshold of quality and I did agree to your statement, that the Quality of a microphone can become too important, if you're looking for a microphone to buy. But when you started to talk about using the figure 8, let alone the omnidirectional pickup pattern, you lost me this time. Why is that? First things first: I understand, that you are treating these two microphones in a bubble, but even so: for a podcast, condenser microphones aren't the most sensitive choices on a budget. You need a quieter room to use condenser over dynamic microphones for a start. Also, if you use a microphone from a somewhat comfortable distance to each other, the SNR will be reduced, quite severely. Even though its a bit oversimplified, you can say: 2x the distance = 2x the noise. And what's more: 2x the distance = (at least) 2x the reverb. And if you're on a lower budget already, you cannot afford to create a room that actually sounds great on a condenser microphone from a comfortable distance. You really need to break the bubble if you are on a budget. Dynamic microphones, let alone those with a super cardioid pickup pattern, will give a condenser microphone a run for their money, if used for podcasts, talking head videos or streaming. I looked up the price of the AKGP420 just now. For the US i found a price of 179USD. For Europe I found a price of 185EUR. I did mention before, how much I love my Shure Beta 58A, right? 😏 Well, what I didn't mention, is how frighteningly close the Behringer BA 85A gets. That microphone is currently sold for 25 USD in the US and 25EUR in Europe. After adding a low-cut/high-pass filter at 95-100Hz with a slope of 72dB/oct to get rid of the ridiculous overblown low end, as well as the rumble when handholding it, that microphone is ridiculously good for the money. Obviously, it's not as good, but before you start to use the AKG P420 at a distance, just because you have to, because you can only afford that one microphone, using 6 Behringer BA 85A up close (5-10 cm / 2-4 inches from your mouth) will give you a ridiculously good sound on a group of 6 people at the same time.
Lol, I feel your pain. One son-in-law is from Madrid and one is from Florence, Italy. Some of the hottest places in the summer. And they have this weird superstition that air conditioners will make you sick and drinking cold water is also bad for you. I think it is just old wives tales their parents used to tell their kids when they were constantly complaining about the heat and also the mosquitoes because you had to leave the windows open at night. On mics, do you think the P420 would get a better full room sound than the NT1-A? I have a NT1-A but am thinking about getting the P420 for a full room recording of loud guitar amps.
Pretty good video, tho' it doesn't really deal with pro audio issues/applications. I think the reason that Harman describe this mic as part of a 'project' line is because they offer some seriously high-end professional mics (some of which are industry standard). If they were to overplay the quality of this item (P420), then some people might think it could be a substitute for, say, the C414 or others. Some manufacturers who don't produce proper high-end gear might describe their mics as 'professional' in the knowledge that it won't interfere with other branches of their business.
Used the AKG for vocals mostly did rock music extremely harsh on louder singers great for quiet singing. Pretty decent on recording guitars. But setting up recording guitars the weight was soooo annoying find the sweet spot the weight tips it over. Room noise was also a problem even when my room is decently treated. So yeah that’s my experience.
I can't decide which I like better for your voice. They both sound decent. The Rode sounds a bit more bassy and more mellow -- more like how you expect a broadcaster to sound. I can see why you like it more. I myself bought the AKG P420 simply because it was a sale for a great price (a lot cheaper than the Rode NT1). I do like the versatility of the AKG P420. So if you can only afford one mic and you want to do more than just recording vocals the AKG P420 might be a good choice. But the Rode NT1 is popular because people like how it sounds.
Yes I have faced this moisture problem in Rode NT 1A, about 3 months have been passed since I had sent it to authorised service center of Rode but till now they have not repaired it.
i use the p420 to record my bass amp. sometimes i run a sansamp to get the top end clank sound and then use the cardioid pattern on the p420 to get the low end from close micing my bass amp, but ill also use the figure 8 and even omni pattern to mic my bass amp from 4 to 5 feet away to get a natural reverb in the room. just depends but the p420 is a sleeper for sure.

Yeah you should be fine! In my experience the warier audio boxes struggle with dynamics because the preamps are pretty weak, but for condensers they should do just fine :)
My main mic is the Electrovoice RE20, but I use sooo many its a problem. TLM102 and LCT 440 Pure for acoustic, SM57 and SM7B for electric guitar, RE20 for voice over. Thats the general vibe.

I personally like the at2020 better but I think it does better for lower voices and the akg p420 does better for high voices. Thats a broad generalization, it really depends on your specific voice. But I really love the AT2020 and for deeper voices its great :)

Depends on what you want! To me ears the 440 pure is definitely a brighter, shiny tone, it will help you cut through a mix, but if you're looking to make your voice a bit more warm and solid, the 4040 may be the way to go

Sure! Between those two, I think the air the p420 had and the multiple polar patterns gives it an advantage, I would choose that. For guitar, I think it’s extremely flexible and could give ti y some nice air. For voice, I personally would choose the Lewitt
Rode NT1 is absolute trash. Anyone worth their salt when it comes to engineering, recording and mixing would know that. It is quite a hell of a lot far from a "neutral" mic, as it's offensive treble is practically a meme in all of the studios I've frequented as an engineer throughout the years. You can always tell when a client has recorded vocals with an NT1 in a less than appropriate room ambience conditions. Now don't get me wrong, p420 isn't a U87 by no means, but I would not bat an eye if I had to tell which of the two should someone pic as an entry level LDC condenser.

I would say either the Lewitt or the AT 2035. Question, what register is your voice? Are you a tenor? If so, I would say try the LCT 240, and if you have a lower voice try the AT2035. This is a big generality, but it's just a trend that seems to hold true usually.

@@User-ec9yl Scarletts are nice! But you could get the behringer UMC202HD for the same price and have two inputs, more preamp gain, and also a surprisingly quiet preamp as well. Behringer can be spotty, but it’s a great bang for your buck. Presonus hardware is great too
Wow, someone actually noticed the p420 is an instrument mic lol. The difference on the guitar was so obvious i was 'thats the p420' seconds into mic 2, that detail boost is just obvious, but its truly awful for nasal voices (i cant blame podcastage for hating AKG with his voice lol)
What would you recommend for someone needing multiple figure-8 mics? Don't say TLM 107 please lol. I was looking at the lewitt 441-flex and then saw the p420 for half the price.
I would say 441 flex to be honest, I personally don't enjoy the p420, but of course thats personal taste, there's nothing too wrong with the microphone. If you want a brighter tone, you may prefer the p420 :) although both are relatively bright
most of this video was using a mic not in the listed comparison... good job... then the part with the test you pick the worst singer in Europe... super fail..
Anyways you get quite the same sound in post with VSTs Both mics have Large diaphragm (34mm) capsules that sound quite close one to each other. The Proximity effect on Rode NT1, it almost doesn''t exist, though it's engineers have workerd well to get rid off it. As far as I have tested it with other mics, I can say that NT1 is not that perfect for VO commercial work. Still you can use it in any situations, it "eats" everything, but without rich bass. I know I may annoy you with my opinion, but whatever. Here it is. My own search for microphoe that fits my voice is far from over yet :)

I preferred the AKG on the singing and guitar, it just has a better presence to my ears, the Rode feels like it would need some "air" added in post.

The p420 sounded so good on the guitar cause when it switched I was like “did they just add an effect?” It gives a lot more color I think

Yeah I mean its certainly a matter of opinion! I personally don't love the tone but you can't deny its usability with those polar patterns

I finally received my NT1.. I'm happy with it. I do hear more of my room... but that's what you get with a condenser mic.

I think the reason that Harman describe this mic as part of a 'project' line is because they offer some seriously high-end professional mics (some of which are industry standard). If they were to overplay the quality of this item (P420), then some people might think it could be a substitute for, say, the C414 or others. Some manufacturers who don't produce proper high-end gear might describe their mics as 'professional' in the knowledge that it won't interfere with other branches of their business.
The NT1 has a "sand" like quality in the high, which I don't like on voices. Btw this is not about eq.
i like it because my voice has way too much high end which results in me having to turn the high end down while recording
Used the AKG for vocals mostly did rock music extremely harsh on louder singers great for quiet singing. Pretty decent on recording guitars. But setting up recording guitars the weight was soooo annoying find the sweet spot the weight tips it over. Room noise was also a problem even when my room is decently treated. So yeah that’s my experience.

I can't decide which I like better for your voice. They both sound decent. The Rode sounds a bit more bassy and more mellow -- more like how you expect a broadcaster to sound. I can see why you like it more.
I myself bought the AKG P420 simply because it was a sale for a great price (a lot cheaper than the Rode NT1). I do like the versatility of the AKG P420. So if you can only afford one mic and you want to do more than just recording vocals the AKG P420 might be a good choice. But the Rode NT1 is popular because people like how it sounds.
I heard that rode nt1a absorbs moisture and it needs to get heated to start recording. Is this the case?
I haven't ever heard about this particularly for the NT1a, but in general its a good idea to keep condensers stored and away from moisture :)
Yes I have faced this moisture problem in Rode NT 1A, about 3 months have been passed since I had sent it to authorised service center of Rode but till now they have not repaired it.
i use the p420 to record my bass amp. sometimes i run a sansamp to get the top end clank sound and then use the cardioid pattern on the p420 to get the low end from close micing my bass amp, but ill also use the figure 8 and even omni pattern to mic my bass amp from 4 to 5 feet away to get a natural reverb in the room. just depends but the p420 is a sleeper for sure.

Yeah you should be fine! In my experience the warier audio boxes struggle with dynamics because the preamps are pretty weak, but for condensers they should do just fine :)

Hi for vocals you don't really need the 420. The p120 will do the job for that and its super cheap.

My main mic is the Electrovoice RE20, but I use sooo many its a problem. TLM102 and LCT 440 Pure for acoustic, SM57 and SM7B for electric guitar, RE20 for voice over. Thats the general vibe.

Depends on your voice! I think the AKG p20 emphasizes high end more, while the NT1 is more of an all rounder, with a focus on the midrange :)

I personally like the at2020 better but I think it does better for lower voices and the akg p420 does better for high voices. Thats a broad generalization, it really depends on your specific voice. But I really love the AT2020 and for deeper voices its great :)

Depends on what you want! To me ears the 440 pure is definitely a brighter, shiny tone, it will help you cut through a mix, but if you're looking to make your voice a bit more warm and solid, the 4040 may be the way to go

@@snakeisekans I have a little AC on wheels that uses cold water but I can't turn it on during mic reviews because it's noisy :/ I also can't open the windows to my noisy street. We'll just have to make towel time a meme or something until I go back to the US haha

Sure! Between those two, I think the air the p420 had and the multiple polar patterns gives it an advantage, I would choose that. For guitar, I think it’s extremely flexible and could give ti y some nice air. For voice, I personally would choose the Lewitt

Rode NT1 is absolute trash. Anyone worth their salt when it comes to engineering, recording and mixing would know that. It is quite a hell of a lot far from a "neutral" mic, as it's offensive treble is practically a meme in all of the studios I've frequented as an engineer throughout the years. You can always tell when a client has recorded vocals with an NT1 in a less than appropriate room ambience conditions.
Now don't get me wrong, p420 isn't a U87 by no means, but I would not bat an eye if I had to tell which of the two should someone pic as an entry level LDC condenser.
Are you sure you're not talking about the NT1A? The NT1 is relatively flat, the NT1A is quite bright and harsh sounding.

I would say either the Lewitt or the AT 2035. Question, what register is your voice? Are you a tenor? If so, I would say try the LCT 240, and if you have a lower voice try the AT2035. This is a big generality, but it's just a trend that seems to hold true usually.

@@User-ec9yl Scarletts are nice! But you could get the behringer UMC202HD for the same price and have two inputs, more preamp gain, and also a surprisingly quiet preamp as well. Behringer can be spotty, but it’s a great bang for your buck. Presonus hardware is great too

Wow, someone actually noticed the p420 is an instrument mic lol. The difference on the guitar was so obvious i was 'thats the p420' seconds into mic 2, that detail boost is just obvious, but its truly awful for nasal voices (i cant blame podcastage for hating AKG with his voice lol)

What would you recommend for someone needing multiple figure-8 mics? Don't say TLM 107 please lol. I was looking at the lewitt 441-flex and then saw the p420 for half the price.
I would say 441 flex to be honest, I personally don't enjoy the p420, but of course thats personal taste, there's nothing too wrong with the microphone. If you want a brighter tone, you may prefer the p420 :) although both are relatively bright

Anyways you get quite the same sound in post with VSTs
Both mics have Large diaphragm (34mm) capsules that sound quite close one to each other.
The Proximity effect on Rode NT1, it almost doesn''t exist, though it's engineers have workerd well to get rid off it.
As far as I have tested it with other mics, I can say that NT1 is not that perfect for VO commercial work. Still you can use it in any situations, it "eats" everything, but without rich bass.
I know I may annoy you with my opinion, but whatever. Here it is.
My own search for microphoe that fits my voice is far from over yet :)
