It puts this mic in a different light. I wound up rolling back some of the highs after this mod, just to get a touch more presence and am happy where it sits now. Thanks for checking it out!
Awesome!! Glad it worked out for you! I wound up changing the cap in the one i did in this video as well, just added a touch more top end back and it was good to go!
It was. I may go back and bump that back down to maybe 470pf. Might be a "LITTLE" too dark now. But it was definitely better than the stock. Some guys tune their cars... we tune mics lol
@@meistudiony Hey can you recommend a specific cap to get? I'm getting a P220 for Christmas and I really wanna make the u87 mod to it, without changing anything but the capacitor
Depending on the sound youre going for i could see using the unmodified version of the 240 (if u dont need the patterns) or 420 as both mics are very bright. If youre looking for a little bit warmer or rolled off tone, the mod certainly helps! I have another mod video coming out for another mic that gets that U87 sound at a fraction of the cost, esp if u can find a used mic to start with.
Yeah, i had gone back after this video and upped the value of the cap to put a little more top end back in. (the beauty of this mod is that you can tailor it to your liking) I dont think the piano was really hitting the range where it cut off, so there wasn't much difference.
Nice video showing the modification and its effect well. I, however, prefer the original microphone, especially on the acoustic guitar which loses its high end ring - which is part of the Martin sound - so it sounds dull and loses a bit of harmonic life. Sidebar comment - I am curious why you do not use any sort of vice or jig to hold the microphone steady while you cut and solder, etc. Holding the mic while soldering small bits to the board is substantially more difficult than it needs to be. Trust me, Boobie, it is worth 5 minutes in the workshop to make a simple mic-holding jig making your solder job so much easier and safer. Drive on soldier. JR
I have a jig in the shop... didn't bring it to the kitchen table, so things were a little rough. Not enough space in the shop for the camera and stuff, so i let the wife yell at me for doing things on the table. Hopefully going to be re-arranging the shop in the next few weeks and I'll be able to bring the camera equipment in there. I do agree, the cap i put in for this video was a little much. I did go back and replace it with a 470 and it brought back a little bit of the sparkle without being too much. Sounds really nice on voice. One of the producers in the studio wound up taking it home with him... probably wont be seeing that again any time soon! Thanks for checkin out the video.
audioimprov.com/AudioImprov/Mics/Entries/2013/2/26_AKG_Perception_220.html At the bottom of the page, you can see the negative feedback to the capsule ground. This is the "flattening" part of the circuit. SO its not just a resistor/cap combo, its more built into the feedback part, so my mistake, its not just cut and dry. I thought i had the original schematic somewhere that i got a long time ago, but I can't seem to find it. (was for the Perception 400 i think i had... almost the same circuit... very little has changed from version to version.
Its a signal path cap so just about anything will do. The higher the voltage rating, usually the bigger the cap. You wanna try and keep things smaller to fit. 270 is way more than enough.
HI I OWN A AKG P 22O WHICH IS A CARDIOD . IS IT POSSILE TO MAKE IT INTO AN OMNI DIRECTIONAL . I KNOW IT MIGHT SOUND STUPID BUT JUST FOR MY CURIOUSITY IS IT POSSIBLE.
With that model stock, no, in order to have multiple (including omni) patterns, you need a capsule that has two diaphragms. (Front and back). In theory you could replace the capsule and modify the circuit to do it, but it would a lot of work and with the p420 often being under $200 (and used even cheaper!) youd probably be better off grabbing one of those. Thanks for the message!
Can use any film or ceramic capacitor with the value of your choosing. Depending on how much you go will determine how rolled off the top end gets (from what frequency). Im partial to WIMA capacitors.
The mod can be done with the Perception 400, though i think the capacitor that needs to be changed MAY be in a different place. I'm not 100% sure on that, but I can look into it.
On the board that has the switches for the pad and filter, you should see a bunch of components in two rows of 3. 195 105 105 289 BLANK BLANK If you see that group of components its the second blank or the bottom right most component. Just connect the leads to either side of the existing capacitor.
