Marcel, first of all really thanks for your videos. As a rookie who just wants to capture sounds for his music I found your videos very helpful in getting a proper setup. However, because I don't like to lug around big poles/tripods I came up with a very compact and light (depending on the tripod used) setup. I use the (Andycine) VT-03 Vlogger aluminium tripod (€12) together with an Innorel ER222C carbon fiber extension pole with 10kg weight capacity (€15) and Andoer 2-in-1 mini ballhead with cold shoe mount (€13). Both the extension pole and the ballhead have rubber gaskets which do an amazing job of reducing microphonics and the relatively heavy tripod allows me to extend the pole without worrying about my Tascam X8 falling over. As you know, the Tascam is a heavy boy. It all packs up super small. Anyway, hope it brings you onto some ideas for your own setup just like you did with me. All the best.

I purchased this same stand in December of 2022. On my first field recording trip to a local park, the stand tipped over and one of the carbon fiber legs broke. When the carbon fiber leg was broken, I could see why it broke so easily. The manufacturer has a small metal rod going through a plastic ring on the leg. I pointed out this issue to the manufacturer, but I still have not received a replacement. I have switched to another model and I am much happier.

To answer your question: Surround recordings may become increasingly popular for ambience and other aspects of sound design but it is unlikely that they will become the only accepted format in the future. Sound design is an art and sound designers will likely continue to use a diverse range of recording techniques to create amazing audio experiences. Mono or stereo is just as important. :)
