    Hi Jess,
    What a delightful person you are. Your photography fun radiates from the screen and your videos and photos are very inspiring for me to go out and shoot a roll of medium format film too. The beautiful snow landscape helps of course, I am jealous, but I could do without cold feet! The Mamiya 645 plus the 45mm f/2.8 seem like a nice combo to work with. Your images look great. The video production quality is wonderful; the shots, the camera angles, the editing, and music. I love it. Please keep up making your lovely videos! Kind regards from the Netherlands, Paul

      Thank you very much Paul, your lovely comments mean so much to me! It warms my heart when I hear that I've inspired someone to go out and shoot... I myself take a lot of inspiration from other YT channels, so it's nice to know that I'm paying it forward!
      Yeah, the cold feet do suck, a really good pair of boots is needed in the wintertime!
      Thanks for watching!

    Another lovely video. Great snow scenes. Spring has sprung here now and last weekend I saw hints of green in the woods.

      Thank you so much! The snow has since melted, there might still be a few pockets left in the woods here and there, but spring is definitely on it's way! I meant to get this video out a little earlier, but that didn't happen, so I'm a little late on the winter scenes!

      Hahahaha, my videographer is always trying to get me to tone down my arm gestures, especially if I'm accidentally blocking good light coming into the shot! I blame the French side of my family, all a bunch of good arm gesturers, lol!
      It is a great way to stay warm though! 😉

    I have a M645 and it is built like a tank (I have an original one not the plasticky later ones). However, it sometimes doesn't fire the final shutter. It isn't the battery as that is new and I have tested it to ensure that it is putting out full power. I also put the battery in a replacement body I bought and it is working fine there. However, just as is the case with accidental firing if you have lens cap on (or the shutter didn't fully fire), you can turn to multi and then rewind the shutter and save that shot. However, if you store with lens cap off, you lost the shot as you said. Also, prices for these are going crazy on the used market and the waistlevel finder costs in the $200s USD. That is more than some bodies. It is a great camera but had some design flaws including the shutter. Your shots were great and I'm really happy to see you back.

    • @JessHobbs
      @JessHobbs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally, I also prefer the earlier models, which is why I went for the 1000s. They do definitely have their quirks, and I have been trying to come up with work-arounds to funny shutter problems (love that multi function, it has saved a few shots now and then for me!). It is a shame to see prices rise so quickly, but I have actually found that any Mamiya system has been underrated for so long, that it is nice to finally see it get some recognition... but as popularity rises, so do prices. My advice is always to be patient, keep searching, and one day the perfect camera will be there waiting for you.
      Thanks for watching!

    You have a great camera and with the other lenses you may have in mind it will give you a great system. I purchased my first Mamiya 645 in Germany (1978-1980), and I got it for $360, complete, because of a mistake in marking it up. There should have been a $1000(360) in the front. It didn't have a light meter only the prism and I did not have access to a handheld light meter. I learned to use the Sunny 16 rule real quick. I made the mistake and got rid of this camera and a number of other accessories for it in 1983. Today, I have all of the Mamiya 645 series except for the M645E. I have repaired at least two of them and I have about four(4) bodies that I am working on to see what I can savage. I hope to get another three cameras that are working. Two of the best lenses I have are the 50mm Shift and the 80mm 1.9. I have an adapter that I can use to make the 50mm Shift to do tilt as well. I have used some of my lenses on my Canon cameras with an adapter and the images are great. And yes I trudged around in the snow, no snowshoes, in Germany with my two boys and we got some great images. Enjoy shooting with this camera. You will not be disappointed.

    I just recently found your channel, and it's just what I needed! Taking the step into film photography and developing again after 25 years, it's good to lean on someone with a little fresh expertise. Playing with the Holga and a Yashica TLR is what I'm doing right now, but the goal is a Mamiya of some sort, either the 645 or the 67. And maybe a 4X5 some time?!
    It's easy to see that you put a lot of thought and effort into your videos, so I hope it's good to know that they are really helping me - and probably many others - who is working their way into analog photography😊

      @JessHobbs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know, right?! I've been eyeing out the Reveni, I've used the smaller hot shoe light meter with good success before, so it's on my list if I can't get my spot meter fixed (it was handed down to me, so it has sentimental value too).

      The 1000S at 1/1000s over my Hasselblad 1/500s and your RB 1/500s has a large upside.

    • @JessHobbs
      @JessHobbs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does, which is why I waited it out to get the 1000s. Combining the shutter speed with some faster lenses (the RB lenses are f3.8's) was the reason I wanted to get a 645 camera, and I do like the format.

    I love your channel! Congrats! I just got my 645 too and that used to happen to me too (tripping the shutter accidentally). But there is a shutter lock on the shutter button. Just turn the knob to the red dot. The only down side for me was to remember locking it every time I would put the camera in my backpack, but once you get used to it, it's great

    It is so nice following you when you shoot winter with such passion. The Norwegian me really struggle to find any passion and inspiration for shooting in winter time. I made myself a project over the winter to try and find that inspiration, but I really found it difficult at times. Fomapan 100 is lovely. I shot 80 rolls of that in 2020 to "learn how to use it" and I found that shooting it at EL50 and pulling the development 20% in Xtol really works for my style of shooting. Thank you for another inspiring video.

    • @JessHobbs
      @JessHobbs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much! I do love shooting in the winter, but sometimes I struggle too. It helps that I've been experimenting with film, trying to find the perfect one(s) to use in the snow (so far Ilford Ortho Plus is my favourite!), but sometimes it's too cold, or I'm completely unmotivated.
      Thanks for the tips on Fomapan and Xtol! This roll was actually developed in Xtol 1+1, but I shot it at box speed, so I'm really excited to try out your method and see what happens!
      Thanks for watching! ❤

      @@JessHobbs That’s an interesting project. I’d say that I have a weak spot for FP4 plus in winter time. I also normally pull films a stop in winter time to keep the snow white and control the overall contrast. FP4 plus gives me exquisitely fine grain in the whites, and I often use Adox Atomal 49 for development. 😊

    I have the 1000S with the metered prism and hand grip. It replaced the M500 that was stolen from a motel room. I have owned the system since was first released. I purchased that camera from the long gone Robert Waxman camera in Denver in 1975. I had to have it as soon as I saw it. I did have some buyer remorse when Bronica released the 645ETR. I don' use it much now days for the simple reason of weight. The whole set up with 45mm f4 lens weighs in at 5.25 pounds. I lovingly named my M645 Sherman after the WWII tank.
    I can't even imagine taking an RB67 out for a photo walk. At the age of 74 I am more sensitive to such things. One big advantage to the grip and the weight is you can hand hold pretty reliably down to a 30th of a second (It is harder to shake something that heavy). I only had the 80mm f2.8 for a very long time and found it to be a fine lens. they are still reasonably affordable and easy to find. Enjoy the system.
    All the best - Rich Ball

    great shots in the snow, one tip, as you said about the top shutter button, try and find a 'hard case', what I mean is the rigid leather 1/2 case, witch opens like a clam shell, this rigid case option was around in it's day likely for this reason, a 'barrier' to any accidental touches of the release. (some newer models, I think had resolved this by adding an off-center component to this release (moving the top button out of alignment of the release, meaning some intention is required to use this.)).

      It's because of our chat on the CCR Mamiya episode that I finally took the plunge! And I am so glad I did, it's a fantastic camera! I'm loving the 45mm lens so far, it's ridiculously sharp, but I'm also looking forward to getting the 80/2.8 (much cheaper than the 1.9, and honestly 2.8 is fast enough for me!).

    Great video, Jess! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. An m645 was my first MF camera in 1983. Used the 55/80/150 combo for weddings. That 45 is incredibly sharp, and the Foma 100 has such lovely tones for the woodlands images. Nice to see you working handheld with a lighter system, though the RB creates a beautiful image. 👍😎📷

      Thanks so much Dave, I appreciate the kind words! I'm really loving the 45mm lens, although I do still have my heart set on an 80mm! And I'm pretty impressed with the Fomapan so far too, but I want to experiment a bit more before I make any decisions. I did feel like I was cheating on my RB, but it was so liberating to walk around with a lighter system... We get wet seasons like that, where it stays cloudy for months at a time. Even if it doesn't rain, although you can bet if it's cloudy like that, 80% of the time it'll be raining. The wet season before last, we had a period of a month straight with no sun and ended up with about 2 metres or so of rain in that time. Caused a flood that even the crocodiles were climbing trees in people's yards to get out of the water!!!

    • @JessHobbs
      @JessHobbs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, that would be something to photograph, a croc in a tree! That's too bad about the flooding though, it happens often enough in the spring here when the meltoff and rain happen too quickly, and it's a sight I hate to see.

    Nice video and great filming. I went the other way around, I already had a M645 1000s but added a RB67 a few months ago 😉 Both indeed are great cameras. In case you have a 50 or 65mm with the RB, the 645 45mm uses the same lens hood.

      Thanks so much, Uwe! Both are definitely great cameras, I'm obsessed with Mamiya glass! I do have a 65mm lens for the RB, but it didn't come with a lens hood, so I will definitely be keeping an eye out for one, thanks for the tip!

    Good video, thanks for making it. I am considering a 1000s and a few of the things you shared others neglected to include in their videos.
    Two unrelated items; first I LOVE the quiet of the woods. I recently moved to metro Seattle, it’s never quiet like the woods are quiet. Secondly, where did you get the camera patch on your bag? Thanks

    My thoughts and questions: I like Foma100 quite a lot. What sort of tea do you drink?
    I love that energy when you turn around at the end and walk into the snowy forest on your snowshoes ;)

    • @JessHobbs
      @JessHobbs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like all kinds of tea, both caffeinated and herbal, but that particular tea was Holy Basil (or Tulsi), which we grow here.
      I barely had any energy left at that point, lol, I think I was really excited for supper though! I do try to maintain my enthusiasm throughout the video, I think it would just bum people out if I didn't! 😂
      I am also enjoying Foma 100, and can't wait to experiment some more!

    Nice! do all M645 have waist level finders?

    • @JessHobbs
      @JessHobbs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually think it's more common to find them with the prism finders, since those are generally metered, but I wasn't going to buy one without a waist-level! I love the experience of looking down through a viewfinder, which is why I rarely have the prism finder on my RB67 or m645.

      Yes I love WLF. I am not a fan of the prism. What do you shoot more the 67 or 645?

    • @JessHobbs
      @JessHobbs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely the 6x7, the RB is my jam for sure! But every now and then I really enjoy taking the 645 out for a spin, especially when I want to get a few more shots per roll.

  • @luiskaj2434
    @luiskaj2434 ปีที่แล้ว

    Two things: first, nice job metering the images, they were spot on (excuse the pun); second, if you accidently fire the shutter while taking the camera out of the bag, simply engage the multiple exposure lever on the right side - I assume that your lens cap is still on, you still have the ability to shoot on an unexposed frame...cheers

    Jess, I just saw this video about your M645, a beautiful camera. I’ve been an RB owner/shooter for years. A couple of years ago while looking for a 500mm lens for the RB I bought a 500mm f5.6 lens, which is for the 645, not for the RB. I was so excited to see a Mamiya 500mm for sale that I committed to the purchase and then realized my mistake, too late. I was thinking of offering it to KEH but never got around to contacting them. It is a beautiful lens (heavy, though). Truly this lens is like new. Would you like it? You can have it free, it’s already boxed up. You may not have been looking for such a large lens but this lens is in such great shape that it deserves to go to someone with such passion. Yours if you want it, happy to ship it your way. I’m in N. Calif, in the redwoods. Steve

    Mamiya are great cameras. I think you could also get even better value with a Pentax 645 version 1 (manual focus) and the 35mm A lens (one of the sharpest MF wide lenses around).

    • @JessHobbs
      @JessHobbs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love my Mamiyas, and I chose both of them because they're not battery dependent... batteries and Canadian winters don't mix well! I actually had a Pentax 645, but I sold it because I just didn't like it. The glass was beautiful, as Pentax glass always is, but I just didn't connect with it the way I do with the Mamiya.

    This is great. I'm new to your channel. I have a silly question. I'm not a professional photographer, but I have been, however, collecting several cameras, one being the RB67, which I purchased recently in mint condition for 550 usd, with two 6x7 backs and the 110mm lens. I now have my eye on a new camera.. the Mamiya 645 1000s, which again is in mint condition, with an arm, prism and the 80mm 1.9 lens (which I know is pretty expensive) all for 500 usd. I love the fact it's so portable but I technically don't need it and if I was a professional photographer, I feel I could justify buying it.. don't know what to do... any thoughts? I would greatly appreciate it :)

    • @JessHobbs
      @JessHobbs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, that's a really great deal! Personally, I would definitely buy it and at least try it out... if you don't like it the lens alone is worth more than what you'll pay for the whole kit!
      I'm definitely a collector (and user!) though, so I'm not sure if you want to take my advice, lol! I'll only be happy when I have all the cameras!

    It's not that hard to change film stock when you have multiple bodies (I have 4). As great as the 45 is, I love the 35 that much more. The 110 is great also. I am currently 2 lenses shy of having every C lens (70mm leaf, and 75-150 zoom) an also want to get the 2 S variants.

    • @JessHobbs

    this does show a POSITIVE on the rb 67 side, the DARKSLIDE, at least having one is a "shutter lock" to save the film until you are ready to shoot; but another similarly shaped alternative, NOT mamiya, but a Rolleiflex, the SL 2000f, 35 mm format, BUT it does have a removable back, and the darkslide, as well as TWO power switches ( the battery is secured to the camera on the film magasine, so primary 'disconnect' is on the magasine switch, but another is on the body, the "main" switch, along with the drive mode selection) so NO chance of an 'in-advertant' shutter actuation; similar shape to the mamiya but 1/2 the size!!

  • @pilsplease7561
    @pilsplease7561 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had a 645 which i traded for a gw690 which i stupidly sold after shooting a bunch of film cause medium format was too expensive and was kinda a waste for what I was shooting. decent camera but its a bit limiting.

  • @andyvan5692
    @andyvan5692 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    great video, just REMEMBER, this is NOT a 67 so NO changing film mid-roll!!; this is an INSERT ONLY camera, no removable magasine.
