I had forgotten about Gen 7 NU Mespirit. When Gen 7 came up, I was like this is great, it was among the best mons in PU and had like 10 different viable sets but then I heard "Unfortunately....." Poor Mespirit got banished into the lands of Incineroars and Guzzlords.
You know, I never really noticed before now, but I think Mesprit is the only pokemon whose natural idle sprite/model is T-posing. I suppose if you're lacking the defense of Uxie and the power of Azelf, you gotta show your dominance somehow.
Fact about the lake trio. In explores of time, darkness and sky the guardians were given genders despite being gender less in the main series. Uxie and Azelf were male while Mesprit was female.

The Generation 7 segment is somewhat inaccurate: Mesprit spent a good chunk of the Generation in PU, it was the most used Pokemon several months in a row
I recall the absolute meltdown of the PU playerbase once it rose to NU by usage, that would be like if Scizor rose to OU or if Landorus T suddenly vanished from OU : nobody had a clue of where things were headed and it was a bit chaotic for a while. In a sense, LC has been experiencing it for half a year now since the ban of Vullaby (technically it wasn't the most in the tier, but it was very high and a cornerstone of the meta, even 6 months later the meta is still just recovering from the ripple effect)
I bred a Pokemon just to be able to catch it: an under level 50 Crowbat (faster than it) with Mean Look to prevent escape and Hypnosis from the Hoothoot line for sleep.
Fun facts, I am not now using it on Gen 7 Ubers of all the places, because U-turn+Stealth Rock+Healing Wish is THAT useful for my team. I am not sure if it's better than Gardevoir's Will-o-Wisp+Healing Wish

When you go from ok to so bad in OU and UU you don't even get them mentioned in your Gen 5 section... Ouch. Still, it did much better than i thought. I only have heard of it in the context of Gen 7 PU, and i assumed it has been lowest tier most of the time.
Same, I always thought it was an awful mix of Azelf and Uxie. Pretty glad to see it actually had a niche over them at one point, and was overall pretty solid.
As someone who really liked the personal connection story bit with Mesprit in Platinum, this felt like the most Mesprit appreciation I’ve ever seen in one place.
After watching, Mesprit feels like a strictly inferior Mew. Has the same versatility, wide moveset, psychic typing, just is a bit slower and a bit less bulky with a very slightly higher attacking stats. Good enough stats to be a useful low tier mon but not enough standout features to be great in high tiers.
They probably will stay faithful to the original and... MUAHAHAHAH. Seeing how they kept the Regi Puzzles in ORAS I doubt they will change roaming Mesprit.
Ah yes. The player uses close combat on blissey, graduates, gets married, has kids, and gets a job, and he comes back to his game and blissey's hp is still draining.

Mesprit seems like a great example of how usage tiers are flawed. Still if they can ban things that won't move up by usage why not make an exception for things that have enough usage to move up but clearly aren't viable in tournament play? The whole point of tiers is to give as many things as possible a competitive niche.
Tiers are built on the assumption that a pokemon will see high use in tiers its good in. A low tier pokemon could see some usage because it fits one team perfectly, but that doesn't move it up.
I actually got to use Mesprit in a Gen 7 PU team before it somehow got used enough in NU to rise and rot there, and lemme tell ya, Mesprit was a beast in PU. I really wish it could've dropped back down.
I don't think it was mentioned but Healing Wish also got a massive buff in Gen 8 where if you send a Pokemon out that isn't damaged, it actually stores the wish. So you don't have to immediately send in something that's almost dead, you could send in a fully healthy Pokemon if that's better for the current situation then bring in the Pokemon you want to heal later
Good lord i loved using mesprit in gen4 OU. So many people i knew didnt understand how good it was until they fought mine, i loved its versatility and how easy it is to underestimate it

I do like my Trick Room Mesprit. I have mine situated to simply set Trick Room and either U-turn out, throw out Stealth Rocks, or Psycho Cut. I kind of wish it had, like, Foul Play or something so it could be completely defensive, but as it stands I have mine with full investment in HP and Attack. I pair it with a Brave Stakataka who (ideally) sets Trick Room and then uses Superpower and the Eject Pack to bounce out.
Whenever I played Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, I always envisioned Mesprit having Ishizu's voice from Yu-Gi-Oh the Abridged series. "But, why?" "Because shut up".
I have a fond memory of playing Pokémon Diamond in my grandparents living room as my grandparents and parents were talking. I had been trying to catch Mesprit for a long time, and while they we talking, I finally had thrown the Dusk Ball to catch the Mesprit. When the ball clicked, I started jumping for joy and yelling in excitement as I got it. Mesprit will always hold a special spot in my heart for this very reason.
I think all 3 guardians need more specific roles. Azelf, the sweeper, Uxie the wall and I see Mesprit as the healer. It needs access to wish/recover, regenerator/taunt prevention, safeguard, etc.
Mesprit actually has a lot in common with Alola’s resident Tapu Koko. Both are Legendary Pokémon that inhabit a location close to the player’s home and have an inherent interest in said player. In addition to this, Tapu Koko’s appearance in Gen 7 (Pokémon turned 20 in 2016) can be seen as a successor to Mesprit’s appearance in Gen 4 (Pokémon turned 10 in 2006). Need more comparisons? The Lake Trio and Tapu Quartet each share significant story importance with the mascot Legendaries of their respective Generations and have a tendency to balance their base stats across all categories among members. Both Legendary groups mentioned even have parallel color schemes with one another’s members.
Fun facts, this video made me me try out Mesprit on the Battle Spot Singles I use for Gen 7 Ubers. It works surprisingly well, although I wish it had been a retconned to Psychic-Fairy
In case some of you are curious, I will tell you the current tier status of the other two pixies. Azelf is still a good fast attacker, and is now UU in gen 8. Uxie is still good defensivly, but it's low attacking stats has made it useless. It is now Untiered.

I mean pseudo legendary honestly is a pretty misleading term considering they actually are stronger than actual Legendary bst wise and before gen 3 have insanely wide movepool due to Gamefreak making them RBY normal tier movepool. Garchomp was the first Pseudo Legend with movepool that is 100% predictable - just barebones rock/ground/dragon moves with fire breathing

Lake Guardians! Some of my favorite designs ever. I used Azelf sooo much as a lead. Fast Taunt, could 2HKO almost everything with only 2 moves, and rocks. I loved that lead and metagame.
At this point these videos are just a game of "How Long Did It Last Before It Went to PU".

My thoughts exactly. Dropping 5 in both attacks and both defenses to gain 20 HP and 20 speed is a way too good of a trade-off to be overlooked

I actually got to use Mesprit in a Gen 7 PU team before it somehow got used enough in NU to rise and rot there, and lemme tell ya, Mesprit was a beast in PU. I really wish it could've dropped back down.

I don't think it was mentioned but Healing Wish also got a massive buff in Gen 8 where if you send a Pokemon out that isn't damaged, it actually stores the wish. So you don't have to immediately send in something that's almost dead, you could send in a fully healthy Pokemon if that's better for the current situation then bring in the Pokemon you want to heal later
Good lord i loved using mesprit in gen4 OU. So many people i knew didnt understand how good it was until they fought mine, i loved its versatility and how easy it is to underestimate it
Gen 7 Mesprit was inexplicably not allowed to move into a lower tier to find success, and thus was now lingering in a tier it had no business being in.

starraptor was banned from lower tiers for being too powerful, mesprit couldn't go down because of usage. Different cases here.

Actually it’s my favorite, I actually hate Azelf cause it’s the hardest one to catch for no reason when you battle it. I alway had a rather hard time with Azelf while Mespite I just easily caught
These lake guardians are pixies so you'd think they'd get the fairy typing in x and y and beyond, yet they dont.
Too many Psychic-types got Fairy-type in Gen VI, it's good that some of them kept their type.
They are Legendarys so it wouldn't be able to change

I do like my Trick Room Mesprit. I have mine situated to simply set Trick Room and either U-turn out, throw out Stealth Rocks, or Psycho Cut. I kind of wish it had, like, Foul Play or something so it could be completely defensive, but as it stands I have mine with full investment in HP and Attack. I pair it with a Brave Stakataka who (ideally) sets Trick Room and then uses Superpower and the Eject Pack to bounce out.
Whenever I played Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, I always envisioned Mesprit having Ishizu's voice from Yu-Gi-Oh the Abridged series.

I have a fond memory of playing Pokémon Diamond in my grandparents living room as my grandparents and parents were talking. I had been trying to catch Mesprit for a long time, and while they we talking, I finally had thrown the Dusk Ball to catch the Mesprit. When the ball clicked, I started jumping for joy and yelling in excitement as I got it. Mesprit will always hold a special spot in my heart for this very reason.

I think all 3 guardians need more specific roles. Azelf, the sweeper, Uxie the wall and I see Mesprit as the healer. It needs access to wish/recover, regenerator/taunt prevention, safeguard, etc.

Mesprit actually has a lot in common with Alola’s resident Tapu Koko. Both are Legendary Pokémon that inhabit a location close to the player’s home and have an inherent interest in said player. In addition to this, Tapu Koko’s appearance in Gen 7 (Pokémon turned 20 in 2016) can be seen as a successor to Mesprit’s appearance in Gen 4 (Pokémon turned 10 in 2006).
Need more comparisons? The Lake Trio and Tapu Quartet each share significant story importance with the mascot Legendaries of their respective Generations and have a tendency to balance their base stats across all categories among members. Both Legendary groups mentioned even have parallel color schemes with one another’s members.
The lake guardians should've been given fairy as a 2nd typing in gen6 tbh. They're literally named after pixies, elves, and sprites.

Fun facts, this video made me me try out Mesprit on the Battle Spot Singles I use for Gen 7 Ubers. It works surprisingly well, although I wish it had been a retconned to Psychic-Fairy

In case some of you are curious, I will tell you the current tier status of the other two pixies.
Azelf is still a good fast attacker, and is now UU in gen 8.
Uxie is still good defensivly, but it's low attacking stats has made it useless. It is now Untiered.

I always thought Mespirit was an awful mix of Azelf and Uxie (competitively anyway, design-wise I prefer it to Azelf and think it’s on par with Uxie). Pretty glad to see it actually had a niche over them at one point, and that it was pretty solid overall.

Man, what's the point of being a "legendary" Pokemon if your stats/movepool are worse compared to pseudo-legendaries?
I mean pseudo legendary honestly is a pretty misleading term considering they actually are stronger than actual Legendary bst wise and before gen 3 have insanely wide movepool due to Gamefreak making them RBY normal tier movepool. Garchomp was the first Pseudo Legend with movepool that is 100% predictable - just barebones rock/ground/dragon moves with fire breathing

Lake Guardians! Some of my favorite designs ever. I used Azelf sooo much as a lead. Fast Taunt, could 2HKO almost everything with only 2 moves, and rocks. I loved that lead and metagame.
Just a suggestion bring back the how good was a smash character actually cause I think they a good spin to the pokemon content.
