No kidding, about 5 seconds in the air? Good Lord. I wonder what the velocity was coming out of the barrel, and what speed they were hitting at. Yes so much fun to watch.
I picked up a Rossi 92 in 45 colt and completely fell in love with the caliber. I have loads that start at 130 grains and go all the way up to 385 grains.
Any day you are out and about, shooting is a delight. Love watching you guys. I love shooting at distant targets. You are 2 very pleasant people and I thoroughly love to watch you shoot. I would love to hang out with you guys an do some plinking. You two have a great day.
You may have better luck using the Spartan 250gr hard cast .454 projectile - any hard cast .452 was all over the place in my lever gun. I tried a number of hard cast .452's - no luck with any of them - The .454 solved my accuracy issues at moderate distance (around 400 yards) accuracy as good as a jacketed projectile - I also enjoy shooting my Uberti 45 Colt 1885 single shot out to distances past 600 yards - can run much hotter loads & its a joy seeing consistent gong hits at that distance - thanks for all your efforts - have learned a lot from you guys - all the best.
Really interesting seeing the heavier bullets having a higher average velocity. I remember seeing an article by Elmer Keith using this cartridge in a six-gun against an "outhouse" at six hundred yards quite effectively! Thanks for the video again Mark.
The best targets are abandoned strustures shot at absurd distances. The past weekend, I lobbed some .44 conical bullets out of a cap and ball revolver at a blue Tupperware container far out in the desert and hit it 5 out of 6 times with a satisfying whoosh THUNK sound. Took about 1 whole second to impact, so I’m no Quigley competitor like this guy.

I’d like to see team Mark & Sam shoot some big bore cartridges in the type of rifles that they used to shoot bison buffalo in the United States a few hundred years ago . That’ll be fun to watch .
I have worked up a very powerful load for 45 Colt, I case trimmed down some 454 Casull brass to long colt length and worked up a load using 45 Winchester magnum data and a 300 grain jacketed bullet. Hits like a freight train out to 400 yards. You don't want to shoot these out of a revolver, but in a lever action rifle of recent manufacture they are very effective on Deer sized game.

This reminds me of shooting our longbow "clout shoot". We were shooting at a pig target at something like 200 yards. Lots of wind drift. Fun though! (But less expensive than shooting ammo!)
My favorite hunting load for 45 Colt is that Sierra 300 with a very stiff load of 2400. Clocks 1300fps out of a 7.5" Ruger revolver, never did chrono it out of my 16" Winchester 94. I will say the recoil is impressive.
Do you have access to Hornady FTX bullets? I believe they make some 225 grain in .452 cal with that flexible polymer tip that makes them a bit more aerodynamic yet safe in a tube-fed gun. They might be just the ticket for this little side project.
Good stuff gang . Makes want to dust off the cob webs off my 24 inch barreled Winchester 94 Legacy Model 44 Magnum and have some fun shooting out to 500 to 700 yards to see how close I get to a 20 inch steel round gong .

Thanks for what you do!! Any interest in a rolling block or sharps w smokeless at long range? I found when we were shooting hand gun silhouette that the match kings were very consistent too.
Good video !!!!! ...... wild stuff .... lol....pistol caliber at 1,000 ..... I used to prop up leaf sights with lead but you are way beyond that....yup..... of course 45 LC is not really known for accuracy never-the-less that big lead made a difference
@@markandsamafterwork yeah, fun is the keyword for a fact.... I used to hear stories from an old man about 600-700 yard shots with 44-40 but I figured he was just rambling
Wasn't uncommon in the 19th century to shoot pistol caliber lever actions out to these distances. The book The Modern Sportsman's Gun and Rifle Vol 2, published 1884, Walsh mentions the practice of firing lever actions out to 800 yards. It must be kept in mind we're talking about black powder loads. Being British, he of course took every opportunity to slander repeaters as inferior to double rifles so the mention of 800 yard shooting with such a rifle and cartridge is significant, I get the impression the only redeeming quality in his mind. I load 45 grains of 3FG under a 250gr cast lead bullet. I use the proper tools, a Lyman 55 and it's drop tube, a compression plug and then a regular seating and crimp die. I'm getting 1,180 fps from my 20" Henry. Great groups too. My rifle loves them. I want to get a Rossi 24" in .45 Colt and tap it for a vernier sight, drift in a globe front with spirit level. Plan is to turn it into my 1,000 yard repeater. Who needs a $2,000 1886 in 45-70 when a model 92 can ring steel at the same ranges? I'm glad to see others challenging conventional "wisdom" regarding the potential of these rifles and cartridges. Never accept what cannot be done, that just means it wasn't done right.
I killed a mule deer with a ,44 magnum using .300gr bullets. It was more luck than skill, but knowing my gun I thought it was possible. Sitting on a ridge resting my arms on my knees. It took me 3 shots, with my dad spotting, the range was +500 yards. It was with a 7.5" blackhawk pistol made by Ruger. I hit him in the lungs and the round stopped on the far side rib cage punching both lungs. He spun in circles and died with in seconds. I've shot a coyotes at 1000 yards but your lucky to hit within 20' of them. Great fun enjoyed your video on the .45. cheers mate !!
225 gr or 250 gr hornady ftx might be your friend in this game. Most probably won't feed , will zip on through the air a bit better. I single feed em in our Rossi r92 454.
I didn't think that type of bullet was any good out to 1000 yds. I saw in the early 1980's in a Parker Hale catalogue here in the UK, bolt action heavy barrelled target rifles in 7.62 mm Nato rounds. Apparently they were for competition target shooting at I think it was 1000 metres or maybe yards. But that's a lot different to 45 colt calibre. Is this just for fun
I have a question, and it's in the form of an observation really, why do folks tend to call this caliber a 45 'long' colt, when the cartridge is in fact called simply a .45 Colt? Watching Mark shoot with this Henry, makes me chuckle when when we watch those 'wonderful' older Cowboy movies and galloping along on a horse the shooter, with his rifle, can hit another rider seemingly 'a half mile' off. :) Nice to see this caliber/cartridge being fired though. Mine's in a Winchester 1892 model. Thanks!
With me she would probably say nope didn't see it, nope didn't see it. Yep there it is about 500 yards to the left. Heee heee heee. I would give up if you were after me.
