  • Hello everyone!
Welcome to this HO scale model train install! This is an install of a TSU-2200 Big Steam decoder, just like I installed in my Athearn Big Boy a few months ago. The new Athearn Big Boys come from the factory with these decoders but this new decoder opens up the possibility of having authentic Union Pacific Big Boy sound effects in any brand or model. This decoder is also a great option for other large steam engines, such as this Union Pacific Challenger, especially since it even has the whistle from #3985 programmed into its whistle options and it has other Union Pacific large steam locomotive specific sounds.
Here are some of the links I mentioned in the video or just other helpful or fun links:

    1K Ohm (1/4 Watt) Resistors: www.amazon.com...

Hopefully this video helps you guys out in your personal installations or gives you an idea of what the decoder sounds like! It has lots of amazing features and SoundTraxx will always be my go-to choice for model railroading sound decoders!
Thanks for watching, liking, and subscribing!

Great video! I came across this while researching how to install a Tsunami2 in an Athearn Genesis Challenger. You have saved me a lot of time and trouble!
I have done a lot of sound installs, but no Genesis steam locomotives. I have had this engine for ages and have seldom run it as the sound was poor due to the bad decoder and cheap speakers.
I have two Athearn Genesis Union Pacific FEFs and a Trix Big Boy that are going to get new Tsunami2 decoders and upgraded speakers.

Excellent video sir! You have great communication skills and I encourage you to consider doing other train related videos and even interviewing people such as older model railroaders on the history of the hobby and/or the skills they developed over the years.
I have a first run Athearn Genesis big boy and a gear cracked in the lead drive assembly and getting to it was nerve racking! I’m slowly getting it all back together but it pushes my limits on patience, lol. I can suggest to other modelers that if they have a damaged gear they can simply remove the dog bone from the motor to the gear tower where it’s no longer powered, the model will run just as good as normal but it’s pulling power will be slightly diminished so consider this before going this route. Just like most models in our hobby, age does take a toll on the gears since none are safe from potential damage as time goes by.

Thanks for the positive response and for sharing your experience with the gears on these models!

Nope it is just made out of pieces of .040" (1mm) thick polystyrene sheet that I cut up and glued together!

On tsunami 1 versions does it need a light resistor too? To be converted to tsunami 2

Well I know the TSU-750 Micro Tsunami from the pre-Tsunami 2 days had a small resistor like you are talking about but I dont think the original TSU-1000 Tsunami decoders did. And as you see in the video, no resistor was needed for this TSU-2200 decoder but I'm not sure if one is included and required for the smaller TSU-1100 decoders

Thank you! I found the Force Full - Range speaker to drop into my FEF-3 and Challenger. Bought an extra one so if I come across a Big Boy, I'm ready to go.
