  • This is a test of the 100 gr Barbarian MXT Mechanical Broadhead designed for crossbows (but can be used with vertical bows as well), by Cobra.
    Here is summary of my 2022 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/ the scores of the Aftermath posted in parenthesis as well.
    Total Barbarian Score: 81.30 = 8 Golden Arrows
    1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 20 pts)
    This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 10 (20 on 20 pt scale) & the max score of a Fixed is 8 (16 on 20 pt scale).
    2. Cut Size (20%, 12.01 pts)
    The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
    The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (.66"+.26"/2.5" x 7 = 2.58 pts)
    The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.5"+/2.5"+.26" x 7 = 4.93 pts)
    The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.5"/2 x 6 = 4.5 pts)
    3. Blades (20%, 16.5 pts)
    Initial sharpness (9%, 300 grs=9/10=8.1 pts ) & Edge Retention (9%, +100 grs=8/10=7.2 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
    Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
    What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
    A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
    A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
    A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
    Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
    Out of the Box Sharpness:
    0-200 gr: 10
    201-300 gr 9
    301-400 gr: 8
    401-500 gr: 7
    501-600 gr: 6
    601-700 gr: 5
    701-800 gr: 4
    801-900 gr: 3
    901-1000 gr: 2
    1001-1100 gr: 1
    1101+ gr: 0
    Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (6/10=1.2 pts)
    4. Penetration (20%, 15.79 pts)
    There are 3 penetration tests:
    Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (8" = 8 pts)
    Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score.
    (45 layers=5.79 pts)
    Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (2/2pts)
    5. Durability (20%, 17 pts)
    Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 after each shot & weighted to 12% of the score. (10/10 = 12 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (7/10=3.5 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (5/10=1.5 pts)
    Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
    BONUS: Heads will be rewarded bonus points for special, intangible features such as: rotation, no O rings/clips for mechs, extra thickness, hole size, other unique designs, etc.
    +1 extra good flight
    +1 no O Rings
    +0.5 pts extra thick blades (.056")
    -2 pin broke even on non-durability test
    -0.5 pts all 3 heads rattled when closed
    TOTAL Barbarian MXT SCORE: 81.3= 8 Golden Arrows
    Price of Barbarian: $21.67/head
    Grading Scale:
    90-100 10 Golden Arrows
    85-90 9
    80-85 8
    70-80 7
    60-70 6

      Yeah, durability is an advantage in many fixed blade heads...but I've also shot many fixed heads that didn't do as well as these. And mechs also provide extreme flight forgiveness, which is huge for nervous, rushed, or windy conditions--or really long shots--or if your bow/technique is not excellent.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment. There are a few factors that affect ferrule durability--materials, hardening, and geometry. Titanium can be a great choice (the Sevr 1.5 for example is titanium and I've shot one head into concrete 3 times and it was still going strong)...but these are pretty vented, so the geometry could be improved. But still, these are more durable than many fixed heads and most mechs.

Some great ones off the top of my head are: VPA, Cutthroat, Alien V2, Kayuga Gen 2 Pilot Cut, A2, Kudu, Big Game 2, and the new Cleaver by Crimson Talon. But I will say, there are some multi blade heads that cut A LOT more tissue than most 2 blade mechs and even penetrate better--like the Exodus or Tooth of the Arrow. Many people think Single Bevels spin like a drill--but even the best ones only add about 15% more cut with their rotation...adding a third blade adds 50% more cut or a third & fourth blade adds 100% more cut.

    Great vid as always. You still can't beat a great single beveled broadhead like iron wills product line. Titanium isn't really a good material for certain applications. Very strong material in some directions but others it's pretty weak. Xample, unrelated to topic but will demonstrate the strength of Titanium. I have a high-end mountain bike$15k. The pedals had Titanium axles, I broke one of the axles easily as I'm only 140 pounds so it's a great wonder material but only for certain things. Cheers . Do more with iron will Bill😁

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures

    IMO the design needs more work. Improve the durability of the pin, replace the titanium ferrule with a tough stainless steel, and reduce the rattle when closed.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That would help. But ferrule durability is a function of a few things: Material (as you mentioned), hardening, and geometry. A good, well hardened steel would be much more resistant to impact than titanium...but would also add a lot more weight. A less vented design (geometry) would help this ferrule be a lot more durable.
      If you look at the Sevr 1.5--it is also titanium, but much thicker--and can withstand more impact than the vast majority of fixed blade heads. I've shot one into concrete 3 times and it was still going strong.

    • @frankbrowning328
      @frankbrowning328 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LuskArcheryAdventures Agreed. However, I see Titanium as a better marketing material than a broadhead ferule material. When using the same design/profile, a good quality, properly tempered stainless steel is superior for durability to titanium and that IMO is far more important than weight savings. It takes less steel to be as strong as titanium so the weight savings isn't that big of a deal. The steel is also far cheaper, and that savings can be put into high quality blades.

    These over the top broadheads are kind of sketchy to me. Mechanicals already have reduced penetration and passthroughs are less common, then you add on the extremely small entry holes. That in my mind leads to worse blood trails and issues if you happen to have a suboptimal shot.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment. I used to think the same. But there are nice advantages to each.
      Mechs offer much more flight forgiveness--which is huge in nervous, windy, rushed conditions...or longer shots...or if your bow & form are not in excellent tune.
      And mechs also offer a much wider hole, most of the time.
      But fixed tend to be more durable and penetrate a bit better.
      That's where a really tough, good penetrating mech is hard to beat. But there are few mechs that are designed that way.
      Everything is a trade off.
      That's why I created this formula to give a composite score for both mechs & fixed--each may excel in certain areas, but overall you can compare the scores.
      And these Barbarians scored higher than most fixed blade heads. The highest score of any head this year is a Sevr 1.5...but there are some fixed blades that scored very close to that as well.

    • @yourmomma2995
      @yourmomma2995 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LuskArcheryAdventures that is the exact opposite route i went , i used to use mechanicals exclusively (i think i tried them all over the years), then i found i could get fixed 3 and 4 blade heads to fly just as well, and i can use the same fixed head for practice and killing game over and over after re-sharping it, i do that until i eventually lose that head. most mechanicals i have used are one and done, that is not very cost effective. it really used to bother the heck out of me when i would get down and find my arrow only to find that a blade had been broken off, or blade or both has bent back reducing my cutting diameter, or a blade retaining screw had broke off, or a bent or broken off ferrule caused a reduction in my penetration.
