  • This is a test of the 100 gr 3 blade Wasp Drone broadhead. Use the Stay Sharp Guide "Replaceable Blade" model to sharpen them.
Here is summary of my 2022 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/ the scores of the Drone posted in parenthesis as well.
Total Drone Score: 78.86 = 7 Golden Arrows
    1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 16 pts)
This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 20 & the max score of a Fixed is 16. The Drone will also receive 1 bonus point for extra forgiving flight.
    2. Cut Size (20%, 12.84 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.69" = 4.73 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.69" = 4.73 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.125" = 3.38 pts)
    3. Blades (20%, 19.15 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 175 grs = 10/10= 9 pts ) & Edge Retention (9%, +25 grs = 9.5/10 = 8.55 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
    Out of the Box Sharpness:
    0-200 gr: 10
    201-300 gr 9
    301-400 gr: 8
    401-500 gr: 7
    501-600 gr: 6
    601-700 gr: 5
    701-800 gr: 4
    801-900 gr: 3
    901-1000 gr: 2
    1001-1100 gr: 1
    1101+ gr: 0
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (8/10=1.6 pts)
    4. Penetration (20%, 16.34 pts)
    There are 3 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (8" = 8 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score.
    (67 layers=8.61 pts)
Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (2/2pts)
    5. Durability (20%, 13 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (2/10 = 1 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (NA = 0 pts)
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
    BONUS: No Bonus Points
+1 pt for extra forgiving flight
TOTAL SCORE: 78.86 pts = 7 Golden Arrows
    Price of Drone: $13/head

My buddies and I were in Elk camp where we sometimes mess with each other buy "shooting fletches" He lost the coin toss at 30 yards shot one of his hunting arrows into target where I then shoot to cut his fletches then next one tries to cut mine ect. Being so far out in backcountry with limited arrows it puts stressors on your shots.
I had a Wasp sharp shooter on this day that sheared not just his fletching but his Shuttle T blade right off with the only damage to the Wasp was broken bleeder vein. Maybe a fluke but he doesn't shoot Shuttle T anymore because of that and he wont "Shoot for veins" anymore either. I have used Boss, Sharpshooters, Drones and Hammers as well as others I have hunted with and seen zero issues. Those Chisel tips are VERY good and super easy to tune. If anyone will abuse a broadhead its me, i still am shooting them.. Just not at steel

Was going to use these in elk, but missed my target during a shooting session and it bent the ferrule on the drone. I’ve killed elk and deer with their hi tech hammer 85 grain head. I have no doubt the drone would work and work well. but as you said there are better heads out there. That said, Wasp makes the absolute best trocar tip on the market. It is needle sharp. I wish other companies would get their trocar tips as sharp as Wasp. I liked the Drone and it flew well, but a slick trick will do the same thing and stay together.

I remember when first replaceable blades came out and .020 was the standard. I had .020 blades shear off on bones and only 1 or 2 blades would actually make it into the body cavity. Then several companies came out with .027 and that was considered heavy duty...! They were definitely tougher.

I record the price of every head in the score sheet. I have also considered making that a part of the rating, but have decided against it, just cause everyone's budget is so different. I figure I'll rate the heads on performance alone, then list the price--and each viewer can make their own judgment on the Value. But thank you for the comment.

Thanks for watching & commenting. I understand that. I am also a very avid bowhunter and have taken hundreds of animals over the years with my bow. When a head does very well in my testing, I also try to use it in the field as well, so I can test it in that way also.
The purpose of my testing is to provide comparative data points, so one broadhead's performance can be compared to another. Some of the testing is designed to show the outer limits of what a broadhead can and cannot handle.
If one head can keep its edge while going thru steel plate, and another cannot, all other things equal, then I would want to use the one that can handle it. Same with the MDF testing and the Concrete testing.
It doesn't mean a broadhead is a failure if it doesn't do well in those tests. In my overall scoring system, those tests receive little weight. But it is just good info to know, when making a choice for which head to entrust your hard earned shot on an animal too.
That being said, I've seen heads get more damaged by hitting heavy bone on hunts than they do when hitting steel plate or cinder block. So that extreme durability testing does have its merits.
But like I say in every video: "You check out the score sheet and see how this head performed in the areas that matter to you the most." If the durability testing doesn't matter to you, then just overlook those 10 seconds of video :)

I have some spare blades for this I thought would work with my Chinese exact copy of Allen Style head, in black one of these lost a blade that did not work if you want them. I if I can I will send you these along with some of the two types of broadhead I have but new direct from Amazon, a small game 100 grain head and the 100 grain Allen Style Wasp Drone head.
I ended up getting some more heads of same type of Chinese, to use the blades but in a color Green they use for the shaft that for some reason is way shiny unlike the black, not what one wants when shooting as the glimmer from sun can give you away before releasing the arrow with the green also a kind of ugly lighter green color, so I would not use it unless I had to. The red, blue, sometimes orange from some sellers, goldenrod/yellow, or even the silver no color like the Allen I would use like I have like the black and seeing other people comment, the green and obviously silver tend to be the most reflective and have with the green more then silver given away their position because they thought all colors were not as shiny as the no color silver.
