  • This is a test of the 100 gr Truglo Titanium X 4 Blade Mech broadhead.
Here is summary of my 2022 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/ the scores of the Truglo posted in parenthesis as well.
Total Truglo 4 Blade Score: 83.09 = 8 Golden Arrows
    1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 16 pts)
This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 10 (20 on 20 pt scale) & the max score of a Fixed is 8 (16 on 20 pt scale). The Truglo got a max fixed blade score of 16 pts.
    2. Cut Size (20%, 18.9 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.37""/2.5" x 7 = 6.64 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.62/2.5" x 7 = 7 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.75"/2 x 6 = 5.25 pts)
    3. Sharpness (20%, 18.3 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 250 grs=9.5/10=8.55 pts ) & Edge Retention (9%, +25 grs=9.5/10=8.55 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
    Out of the Box Sharpness:
    0-200 gr: 10
    201-300 gr 9
    301-400 gr: 8
    401-500 gr: 7
    501-600 gr: 6
    601-700 gr: 5
    701-800 gr: 4
    801-900 gr: 3
    901-1000 gr: 2
    1001-1100 gr: 1
    1101+ gr: 0
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (5/10=1.2 pts)
    4. Penetration (20%, 14.29 pts)
    There are 3 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (6.25" = 6.25 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score.
    (47 layers=6.04 pts)
Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (2/2pts)
    5. Durability (20%, 16.6 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 after each shot & weighted to 12% of the score. (12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (4 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (.6 pts)
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
BONUS: Heads will be rewarded bonus points for special, intangible features such as: rotation, no O rings/clips for mechs, extra thickness, hole size, other unique designs, etc.
Bonus points: -1 pt blades closing during penetration tests
TOTAL SCORE: 83.09= 8 Golden Arrows
    Price: $13.33/head
    Grading Scale:
    90-100 10 Golden Arrows
    85-90 9
    80-85 8
    70-80 7
    60-70 6

Thank you for the great content. I love the idea of a mechanical broadhead - great flight and wide cut upon impact. I shoot fixed heads due to my belief in their near-absolute reliability. Thank you again for the time and effort you put into these tests.

This has been my go to broadhead for the last 2 seasons. They are very accurate out of my TenPoint crossbows. The results on whitetail and hogs has been awesome, 100% recovery on 20+ animals. I swapped from Rage Hypodermic NC after broken blades on 2 hogs.

I have been waiting for a test on these. They look like a wicked head, and been waiting on your test to see if they are worth trying. Thanks and God bless.

I got a set of these a couple years ago as a gift. I've shot them at over 400 fps out of my Scorpyd Crossbow into my foam targets out to 60 yards. It's a very accurate broadhead out of my bow. I figure they should be an excellent turkey broadhead.

These broadheads are awesome and preform well on deer, don't knockem til you tryem. I use these and broadheads exactly the same as the nap sling blade/ 10 point center punch. My favorite type of mechanical! I was and am a fixed blade guy.

Some of these mech. broadheads have so much metal sticking out of the feral that they might just as well be a fixed balde broadhead along with the broadhead being about 2 inches long.

Yep...they are like a smaller fixed in terms of flight...but if a fixed had as much of a cut as these, imagine how big that would be.

Concidering how the Truglo 2 blade mech did this is super impressive. Heck, it was almost like the Sevr's bit less tough cousin lol.

Yep. Decent head for sure. I wish the blades locked open, but it still works fine.

  • @acanuck3267

Damn... if the blades would lock open it would be pretty great. And with that cut size it penetrated pretty deep!

The wobble is from it not being seated down to the base of the broadhead. This could be fixed by adding a spacer washer (but this will increase weight).
Some inserts are threaded thru, this will allow it to be completely seated

These heads are easy to modify. You can replace the front blades with replacement blades. I made them 1 3/4" x 1 3/4". You can make them 2 blades also. I haven't tried it yet but I'm sure if a guy bought the replacement blades from the 2 blade you could make 2"x 2" 4 blade. Worked great on the one doe I shot at 30 yds. Completely passed through her but one blade did not deploy completely after hitting rib. Head looked brand new. Flew well out of my compound at 320 fps.

The screw holes is where I've had all of my mechanical heads fail when they fail. Just not enough material with the designed in weak points.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes. And in many mechs, those screws are too thin and too cheap of a steel.

Ten Point of course has been promoting the ole' "Rocky Mtn. Gator" design for several years. Not they even have one under their name. I did kill two deer in the past with the actual Gator. Great results. By the inside of both sides of rib cages... did NOT see much of the blades closing up on they way through.
Of course the old R.M. Gator was a two blade and pretty sure was at 2" cut.

  • @GBBLGBL

Love your reviews JL!! Thanks!! I have been using this head for over two years now for turkeys with outstanding results. A couple of things. No where on the packaging or the website are the Ti X 4 blade noted as being a "crossbow" broadhead. Some of their models are but not this one. The dozens I own all screw in flush with either a half out or a HIT so not sure why yours don't butt up flush with the Bishop insert so maybe that is a Bishop issue? I test a LOT of broadheads and specifically mechanicals, these Ti 4 blades spin truer than any mechanical I have owned, so is it possible that is is again an insert issue? These heads spin SO good! I have never had one that wobbles. One last thing from my observations on gator style heads, is it possible the the main blades ONLY start to close back up as the head slows down and epically in a heavy medium like the gel? Just a thought I had. Thanks again!!

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks for sharing that. I tried it on a couple different shafts; the threading is extra long for some reason.

    • @masterski03
      @masterski03 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Steve I have always thought the same thing about the gator style heads. I shoot the nap slingblades . 2 blade in a very similar style to these. I have always had big entrance and exit holes. The other thing is I hit a doe thru the heart and had full cut size on the heart! So I know they stay open in the softer tissues. I think the gel is so dense it closes the blades back up. And I’m not knocking the test of the gel because for 99 % of the broadheads it a great test. I just think it’s not good for gator style heads. The entire design is to help increase penetration and allow blades to move around bone.

I'm going to predict that it doesn't penetrate the gel deep. It bends the blades on the first shot and breaks a blade on the second shot.
