Just cuz aftermarket calls it performance…is it really???

- I’ve only got one year on patina and I’ve been thru so many failures and let downs by the aftermarket parts world i might aswell of just thrown the money in a barrel and burned it.
I also forgot to mention in the video about the t56 magnum that lost 3rd gear syncro after 5k miles
The good alternator in video is a “quality power”
The upside to lousy and expensive parts, was this was a fantastic video. Put the aftermarket on blast, they need to step up their game.
"no one has ever complained before" As soon as someone tell me that, I just write them off as liars. After market race parts........ yeah, made in China. You know it must be good!!!!! Too many people buy this stuff and drive like old ladies. Then tell you how great their car is. The power tour is a good example of cars that can't drive 200 miles without a break down. I'm sure their loaded with aftermarket race parts too. Thanks for having the balls to name the names and give real life experiences with this crap made in China and sold by american companies looking for a good bottom line instead of making good parts.
My thoughts exactly, you know it can be embarrassing to admit you just spent a bunch of money on something that doesn’t work very good…as hotrodders we have a hand in this to. We need to call this crap out when it does suck and steer others away from junk as well.
Nailed it well said!!
This car deserves its own channel.
Best hot rod build on TH-cam
For all who are looking for the alternator brand , it appears to be one from Quality Power. Chris will have to verify , but at 16:00 minutes in you can see the 3 hole mounting flange compared to their website images.
Thank goodness you have the balls to callout the so called aftermarket parts , all those companies are interested in is good marketing and crappy parts, they need to hire some people that know stuff about cars and parts and make something worth the money you pay for them. Pitiful you spend good money on shitty made parts
I like how your buddy Derek just hangs around while you rant and work on stuff. I know he helps you alot and thats what good friends do for each other. Thanks for the heads up on the junk parts.
Thanks for stepping up and telling the truth, I think we are all use to the years gone by when this stuff was made good.
I'm always happy to see videos like this. Good info for those who only build one car and have suspect questions about aftermarket upgrades.
Did Chris say where he got the billet alternator from?
Uncle Tony said that you had made this video, so I figured I would jump over here and check it out. So glad I did. Very informative. I have a '55 chevy with 327 I was going to rebuild, and after hearing you and Uncle Tony, I'm afraid to rebuild stuff on the car. Seems like even the top name brand stuff is going to hell. Uncle Tony did a video also, talking about this very subject. Thanks for taking the time to share with us. Keep up the great work.
I really hope a lot of Suppliers are watching this and get their act together.
I'd love for some of the companies like Wilwood, 440Source, etc engage with folks on making their parts better....but we all know it's all about having a shiny, good looking, marketable, high margin part.
I agree about the throttle body fuel injection, everyone I know that had one used it less than 1000 miles and went back to carbs
I'm with you on the carbs!! I constantly see people praising those throttle body efi set ups. I've also seen a bunch of those same people having a bunch of issues with them, not to far down the road.
For me, I'm all about keeping things simple and going with things that just work. Add to that, the ease of fixing them when there is a problem. It's just hard to beat a carb or even multiple carbs! You can get the same or better performance out of a carb with a whole lot less trouble.
You call them like you sees them , period. !!! Thanks for the video...
Appreciate the time you took for letting us know where some of the pitfalls are. I will gladly pay more for quality, but I don't want to pay more for the name.
Nice work Chris!! We appreciate learning from your mistakes. I try my hardest not to buy Chinese garbage. Some times even the good companies are selling junk, we have to learn from each others experiences. thanks for another cool vid!!!!
I just found your channel yesterday and subbed, I really like this style of video, great stuff.
Amen brother! Youre preaching to the flock! Awesome video you said what needs to be said… as much info as we can pass around word of month the better… the brake thing hits home. Awesome channel!
You are the best source for straight comments. You have reinforced my theory on aftermarket and new-age parts...they mostly are for people who want to brag and feel good about spending a shit load of money on "exotic" car parts but mostly have no clue what they are talking about. It's like the old " this "XYZ" part adds blah-blah horsepower, the ad said so, so it must be true!!!". Great video!!!!! Keep 'em coming.
Im with you on this one. So tired of new parts failing. Just had a cooling fan with just 2000 miles fail and almost destroyed the engine.
In the auto repair industry we’ve noticed a general quality control issue in everything . Mother Mopar designed tapper bearing and its worked for generations
This video is NOT boring!! You've just saved me thousands of dollars.
all truths, hard to find any good parts in the aftermarket. it would be great to see everyone come together and share the good stuff so those companies could rise to the top.
You’re preaching to the choir on the throttle body FI crap, and I just can’t believe the 1 minute after cold start is an actual problem for ANYONE. My non-mechanical mother and grandmother both could drive anything in the dead of winter or heat of August, so can’t believe a real car guy can’t manage the throttle. Just running an MSD ignition (which I’m getting rid of for a second FBO like I have on the other car) makes me nervous enough about a breakdown in the middle of nowhere, let alone a whole “maximize profits” EFI system. And I’m So glad I kept to my mantra of using later model factory parts whenever possible for upgrades on my 69. Or dug around for things from small, family companies making their own stuff un the US like FirmFeel springs, sway bars, control arms, etc.
I'm glad you put out this video because I've been experiencing parts failures from a variety of aftermarket vendors for the past twenty years!
Over a short period of time I've replaced everything made in a country that begin with the letters ch and ends in ina...! I literally hunt swapmeets for the factory parts to replace all the furrin junk.
I'm of the same mindset about electronically controlled TB fuel systems for the exact reasons you stated after seeing the issues my friends have had and being stranded in the middle of nowhere.
Seems like all the Holley sponsorships have taken over Motortrend and the popular shows and I feel these shows are reluctant to revile to their fans the issues they're having.
Definitely glad you made this more betters video. Hopefully others and myself can get better parts the first time around of paying out our good money.
Thanks for the real world info. Always love watching your videos. You give tons of good info and ideas.
Keep the videos coming. And thanks again.
Absolutely correct Chris the tapered bearing is more of a thrust bearing rollerball will never hold up under those loads can't believe welwood would put that junk out at the prices they charge and those front calipers are a joke.
You sound a lot like Uncle Tony there. He's been complaining about quality too. Just with less colorful words! Love your take on it.
Nowadays it's all about profit and to hell with quality!! Great video Chris!!!!!
Thanks Chris for the review on your parts problems, like you I’m learning that some of these
performance parts are nothing but an expensive joke!
Those safety hubs are SWEET.
I love how you speak not the truth, but the damn truth.
LOVE THE RANT THUMBS UP!! People need to hear the truth!!I enjoyed watching your videos man keep up the great work no bullshit .I like how you say it as it is .I feel most aftermarket parts nowadays turn out to be junk in the end old school is usually going to be better..
Excellent video and not at all boring. Props to you for telling it like it is on this aftermarket bullshit. Yeah , makes you realize how reliable the factory stuff HAD to be. Anyway, you do a LOT of parts swappin’ so a video on this subject every once in a while would be great lol.
Hey Chris, your never boring it's aways fascinating how you sort out those problems & get the Very best out of your fabulous Cars, I just Love it best wishes take care
Got into your. channel when you found patina, and watched every episode of you bringing that car to life which is my thing and I'm so pleased patina is still on the scene, she's gorgeous 😎😎
Sorry to hear of how much of your hard earned money got wasted. Your videos are the best. Keep on doing your thing!!
Great video! Loved hearing about the over priced junk that doesn’t work. Need video telling what does work 😃
Not boring at all. Most interesting youtube car guy video in a long time.
The real shame is no one at any of those companies will have the balls to step up and say "we messed up, we fixed it, here's the solution" and that is the saddest part of all. Zero accountability!
"Real life" experiences that are truly shared, are important, anything else would be a disservice to your viewers. I appreciated this. Cheers!
Most not boring video. Aftermarket isn't the best market. Thanks for the heads-up Chris. Peace out.
You’re never boring Chris.
I seriously love you in the best happily married guy kind of way dude. Romp. Our high school term for letting it rip. Keep killing it with your videos. 440’s are the Lemmy of engines🤘🏿🤠
Great video! I've been enjoying my recent build Mopar stroker 61 Galaxie and experimenting with all kinds of stuff. There doesn't seem to be consistency of quality one way or another between cheap knockoff parts and name brand stuff. It's mostly a crap shoot. While I want to support American companies, I often find their products are no better than no name knock off's. Lastly I find a majority of aftermarket "race car" parts don't fit or function as manufactured. They are actually more a "core" or "starting point" to what's needed, they require disassembly, modification, machining, welding, proper setup and reassembly to do the job required. It's the stuff I can't see that worries me, like electronics and composition of materials, those are beyond my home engineering fixes. I'll be following, thanks!
Thanks Chris! Parts good for ice cream cruises, don't work for real driving that you do. Thanks for testing these parts for us.
It's just that with that carburator you have it tuned perfectly, its on point with the card, hell i can see the improvement from this video. The vacuum and distributor, most people dont really understand how to timeing and tune and vacuum is suposed to be set that makes a tremendous difference, also degreeing your cam helps alot people dont understand that either, your doing it correctly dont worry bout what i or anybody else says on the other side of camera, good job,
Dude not boring at all probably saved some of us a bunch of scratch don't know how you're so calm I think my face would still be a plum crazy purple shade of pissed off
Wow, that sucks. If you fell prey to that stuff imagine how that string of failures would affect average Joe.
Chris, Thanks for expressing your disappointment in some of the parts you've bought. As far as alternators are concerned there should be a set RPM that is used to set the amp rating(maybe 800 rpm) like .050 that is used for the actual duration of camshafts.
Looking forward to your dad's Chevelle build too. In the mean time thanks for the heads up on bad quality after market parts
Thanks for pointing this out!!
Those front brakes you took off look like rear calipers and rotors. Insane!!
Accountants and clipboard weasels rule the world now Chris, not engineers.
I love 440 Source because they support my favorite engines! But I cheaped out about 5 years ago and bought a set of their "Hemi Style" connecting rods. In the first 100 miles 3 wrist pins slipped and put grooves in my cylinders. I heard it so I got it shut down before it was too bad but it still meant a total tear down. My engine now has some stock LY rods.
With maintenance the tapered bearings would last years and would take tons of abuse. They are all about bleeding you dry. This is a great video of the trials of your hard work in the desert and the time and care you put in it for it just for it to fail and do it over again, we are going to say that we're praying for you to get your set up done again and for it to last a great while. You should get to enjoy your labor and hard earned money for more than 8k. I am sure that you maintained your work for it to last longer than that
I find your video very interesting...good info for the current companies selling parts. I've had a new alternator fail and I haven't made it around the block with my RR yet.
AGREE !!! I have a '68 Charger and put in a "New" steering box.The first one would not bolt down all the way. It bound up the bolts about 1/4 inch from the frame. The second one was notchy when you went into a turn. The third one has a similar problem. My other problem is, I don't do the work anymore because of a bad shoulder, so I PAY someone to repeatedly do the same job. WTF !!
I'm here in your hometown I'm actually staying at a Airbnb right down the street from you I was going to peek over your wall and say hi to you but, you got to have your privacy man, I am your biggest fan though so keep the videos coming bud, and drive safe.
Not boring at all, really interesting, love your work Chris
First video of yours I've seen/watched, and I have to say I really respect and appreciate the "call-out the BS and take no prisoners" message. Doubt you'll be getting any freebies from companies X, Y, and Z, but....phuque 'em! Subscribed, and will recommend this to others. Thank you!
If you add tensioners to your loose timing chain. You can adjust you cam timing on the fly! LOL!
All kidding aside. Great info! I love your videos and these videos motivate me to finish my charger! YEEEEEEEEEEEE! HAAAAAAAAAA!
Often new aluminum radiators die early because of grounding issues and causing (I believe) negative ions in the radiator fluid, that erodes and eats through all the aluminum. I've know a corvette guy or 2 that had that problem. The street car disk breaks weren't made for race car conditions
Not a boring video! Just adding expensive instances to the already long list of defective small parts that UTG experiences on his side.
Eight thousand miles an that many failing parts is crazy .
Truth you told Chris!
I know of other people that had the same brake problem you told us about.
The rear axel bearings I believe are green bearing co
Those bearings are junk! Just like you said. Seen them fail in all makes of vehicle's, with low miles, drag race cars that only went in a straight line..
Thanks for sharing Chris. But the loss of your time, not being able to get your money's worth out of the parts.
Glad you made this video aftermarket parts in general have declined the past decade and no one says anything. Even parts you get at your local parts store are a crap shoot if its going to work or if you will be swapping it out several times to get one that actually works.
Worked at a resto shop for 2 years, we always had issues with tbi, to the point most customers hated it after awhile with failed tps, failed o2 sensors ,map sensors etc. put a carb back on a couple lol. Never had any issue with any multiport setup tho, those always ran amazing.
Bossman has owned our machine shop since 83, worked their since the mid 70s. He hates everything 440 source for the reasons shown here. I think they do hold value is SOME areas, not a complete right-off
This was a very good video on aftermarket parts, thankyou. I guess best thing to do is keep your old mopar stock and just add headers for some performance gains and be happy with less headaches!
Good video Chris, that wasn't boring at all. Very informative, that stuff is good to know and will probably save enthusiasts time and money. The EFI running rich and washing the cylinder walls is a major f**kup. Thanks buddy.
Looking good. I would say that you are running it more than a car show cruising guy. Autocross is pretty intense ha ha🎉
Great info!! Refreshing to hear honest feedback and truth. Too much endorsed fluff.
Yep gotta be very careful buying aftermarket parts. Comp cams has great stuff never tried howards & I 110% agree on carbs! Griffin radiators have done great too. I stick to what I kno on brakes alt & all that. Love the vids n look 4ward to see ducktape drags
You can add a solenoid to up your idle when you turn the A/C on.
Exactly !
Alternator looks like a commercial “diesel” LEECE NEVILLE that’s been polished .
My opinion on the brakes is the same! I’m in Canada and have told costumers to sit factory parts because if you stranded out in but-f**k nowhere you may find replacement parts.
And it’s not just China or Chineseium it’s all bad quality control coming from other countries to.
Anyway best of luck with the rebuild on the rebuild 👍
👍🏻👍🏻thanks for the honest info! Good to know I’m not the only one to throw my hard earned money away on Chinese BS ! Aftermarket, are you listening !?!? 🤬
Just on par with Uncle Tony’s videos about The regular aftermarket let alone high performance aftermarket just at a crisis with garbage quality
I've personally built a 70 Duster with a lot of pro-touring stuff, 340, EFI (But MS3 Pro with port injection), 18s, have a similar amount of miles, no real problems, but because it's an MS3 multi port, almost all of my fuel injection parts have a stock application. I did use an Aeromotive Phantom 340 pump (this was before the tanks INC tanks were available), but it's good. Have actual OEM GM LS coils, MAP sensor, the throttle body is holley but they are all OE type parts for a GM for the sensors. Use a Delco 12SI alternator, which has decent output at idle (may not make what you need for that many fans but can keep up with my fans), 95-99 Ford Contour Fan setup that are junkyard take outs. 7 years and counting with no breakdowns. Have Dr Diff Mustang Cobra Brakes with the Hydratech (re-purposed Bosch) hydroboost. Those work excellent and I can lock a 275-35-18 summer tire at 70 mph easily if I wanted to. Since I work at an OEM parts supplier I use as much OEM stuff as possible, and people give me a lot of crap about some of it, even though the reliability is actually there. Glad you're willing to speak up.
Oh Wildwood brake, the standard street kit is for the guy that takes his car out of the garage once a month and cruises it to the local car show and sets up a lawn chair. For performance you have to spend a lot more and get the actual road race brakes like what's on your late model stock car. Thats what I got and they were well worth the money. Best brakes I've ever felt in any car besides a race car. And non power assist. So yeah if you're gunna play you gotta pay for the bestest stuff.
Great vid of what after market hot rod shit actually is. As for brakes I tend to stick to factory Bendix or Raybestos I mean race hemi 4 spds used them. I have seen so many high dollar super shiny fat wallets on wheels that are flat out gutless junksters.
Thanks Chris for the great informative video. This helps with some current and future builds…
I had the same issue with baffle coming off on my hemi pan in my 440
I'm in mist of working on my Ford wagon, and lots of the stuff I need, I'm finding the OEM stuff is better than what the aftermarket has to offer. A disc brake conversion based on a S10 isn't going to stop my 4200 pound car. Late 70's F150 style brakes do though.
This one was cool
High buck don’t mean high payout.
You said it well
They printed it off mark it High performance and sell marginal working stuff.
Will be rethinking my choices. Thanks man for a detailed, broke down list of cause/effect and overall decision/criticism of the parts.
Thank you.
Thanks for the warnings!
Can’t wait to see videos on that hellcat powered super bee , we need a 6 part series on that.
Your description of the oil leak burnout was hilarious!
Hey man,
I feel your pain. I don't drive a patina or a V8 my rides are a 63 bug and a 67 split kombi. Now the after market shit is insane I've had stuff ware out on my cars without starting them. And with businesses only selling on line it's difficult to actually know what your buying. TRUST is the word and I'm not TRUSTING them.
✌️ Peace from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺
I constantly dealt with that struggle with aftermarket VW parts. Fan shrouds and cooling tin never lined up. I always had flex and issues with fan rubbing. Flimsy linkage and carb setups for Weber IDF and IDA duals. The list goes on and on
@@benruether8294
It's still going on today and only getting worse. 😡
Damn Chris I know lifters have been a national problem since 2020 Butt didn't realize the toilet bowl was so deep, THX for giving us an edumacation, it wasn't boring it was eye-opening and maybe do a part two on what does work? When you said it worked just NOT as advertised I thought just like Duh 💩head J. LIEden..Take care brother✌️
A month ago I took the throttle body EFI system off of the 440 in my '69 Road Runner (no, not an A12) and threw it in the trash. Could not be happier that I did. It was total junk.
I was not expecting that 😅, it’s running on one dummy 🤣
I feel your pain. I usually replace something 3 times before I get the right part
If I remember correctly back in the day we ran the old drum and would stop by force but would work and would last a little longer than the high dollar stuff they are pushing for the best and safest you can get.
its good to see people Shedding light from a real world perspective, you know im sure all these parts where good a long time ago when quality was better but things have changed drastically and quality is zero anymore its a real shame cause a lot of average folks out there who spend big bucks on all this stuff expect it to last, after seeing this it really make you think twice about spending 600+ dollars on a Griffen Rad or whatever brand that is expensive or brake and whatever else
Thanks for the info. Good luck with your fixing. Like your videos.
Yup I have been thru the same crap in the past when cars were my thing. It sucks!
You weren't ranting, sometimes the truth hurts !
Great video, hard for most people to be honest after they committed a bunch of time and money. Also what's the goal? Go fast from light to light, around a course? Drive reliably around town or across the country while staying cool and listening to the radio. Good topic.
Farrrk
Here in Australia I have Willwood B body drum to disc conversion kit Howard's cam and lifters. None tested yet. Makes me a nervous. I have a powermaster alt on my A body no problem noticed but it only runs a flex fan. I'm going to be running a progression ignition USA made I believe? Not sure if you have any experience with them or bother to read these comments. I have heard from others they're a good thing. I guess we will see.
Love to see a video of what works.
Hey Chris thank you for the video and yeah don't buy nothing unless it is OEM I learned this from Scotty kilmer and Bettina sounds and looks good now I think she's ready to go but sorry to hear it all the money that you lost that's sad and a shame better luck though man this time around
