I have to say, probably one of the best carb tuning videos I've seen. All advice, very PRACTICAL and clear with real world illustrations. You, in a few minutes have cleared up so much of what I have read on the subject. Your video on engine vacuum, ported vs manifold, has already given me the information needed to get my vehicle running closer to how it should be. Idle is smoother and throttle response has increased. Thanks!
Great discussion! I don't know why folks are so quick to ditch their carburetors. Save your money and spend some time learning how to tune your carburetor! :)
Your so right about the carb not into the main jets just cruising. The Six Packs use the center 2 barrel carb to cruise around town. The outboard carbs never do anything until the pedal is past where your normal driving pedal stops. I like to use a tach to adjust the idle air screws. 1 1/2 turns out after seating the idle air screws. Then set the engine idle screw down to the lowest idle you can maintain. Then I start moving the idle air screw and watching the tach. When you get the best idle on the tach with the first idle air screw then do the second idle screw the same. Then adjust the engine idle screw to where the engine is happy depending on your cam. Mopars are usually set stock at 750 rpms with an automatic trans
Glad to see you back on the channel wondered what you had been up to have a good 4th of July catch you on the next video. Really like this video on carburetors very enlightening.
Great video, this is one of the best explanations I’ve ever run across on the Holley carbureted fuel system and drive ability. Really dig the “big dummy” note you added. I instantly thought of Fred Sanford saying that, followed by “stick your face in dough and make idiot cookies” probably not where your mind went but it was the era I grew up in. Again great video and glad to see ya back on here. 👍
Good advice. I remember playing with main jets on my holley 1850s and 3310s back in the day. If I knew then what I know now! Those "cheap" carbs are IMPOSSIBLE to tune correctly. They'll run OK, but they are infamous for poor gas mileage. I hope Holley throws you a bone for a new efi system, because I think you just sold a heckuvalota kits for Holley with this video LOL.
Thanks Chris for the lesson. Cause for sure all carburators have all these strategies to follow!!! And by the way, how many gallons per mile?????? Lololol Don't go to the desert!!! To much thirsty horses to give them to drink!!!!
Thanks for taking us to carb school in laymens terms we can understand, wow I have a little headache, that is some very good information, can`t wait till you get to editing, you always get credit for your fabricating skills, but your engine building and tuning skills are just as impressive as well, thanks for the info, and you share info that most builders don`t share, like it is sacred.
I always felt like a carburetor gives you instant throttle response compared to fuel injection. Then you add drive by wire and something is lost. Feel more connected to a car with carburetor. My $.02
Vacuum advance does make a huge difference. Believe it or not, I fixed an overheating issue on my big block truck just by switching the vacuum advance from a ported source to a manifold source and adjusting it for maximum advance. Better gas mileage too. The gas mileage on my Charger almost doubled when I hooked up the vacuum advance. I also noticed that without the vacuum advance I had to keep my foot in the throttle like halfway, almost getting into the secondaries, just to maintain 65-70 on the interstate. With the vacuum advance hooked back up, I could cruise at 65-70 with the throttle just barely cracked open.
A cool video would be recommended number of gear sets for three speeds versus say 355 and higher definitely appreciated your coverage on the carburetor tuning 🤘😎
Chris, thanks for sharing that info because I’ve never had the chance to use the fuel injection on any of my old hot rods. Only used carburetors since I was born. All my new vehicles are fuel injected, but they’re my daily drivers, no performance.
I believe it. I had a 1960 Pontiac with a big 389 and it would do 17-ish without me putting any real effort into saving gas. I think they won the Mobilgas Economy run that year with the low-compression (8.0:1) 389 at like 21-22. (Chrysler won the next year with a 361-powered Newport). Carbs are just a specific and kind of lost art. Even when I went to school for auto tech they spent like a day on them - and the year I was there they got rid of all their carbs. Which was nice, because I was given a '71 Pontiac Rochester I sold a few years later for a nice chunk of change, but that's another story.
I think I just learned something new one holly carburetors now I can buy one and take off my edlbrock I love holly's there better than what I have and also they should have a vacuum advance for molar big blocks well I own a small block ford they make them and thanks for sharing some info very helpful
That explains why my AFR (city driving) is pretty much the same after lowering my main jets. I never got to them! I have a 4160 (pressed in bleeders), so I will be upgrading at some point. Thanks!
Awesome Chris thanks 👍🏻 for I want to build V8 best one day again, I used to have a V8 Holden wagon Australian car but I put the 2 barrel on it it was cheap to run then and so was gas lol , I do want a cruiser again will do a small block 283 chev I've already got the block and will get aluminum heads and inlet for a 2 barrel, block hugger headers and see if I can get tubo 700 or something with over drive and just a 8 inch diff with gear's for long distance, hopefully before they want to get rid of petrol car's, they can run on alternative fuels with sero pollution but the petrol companies and governments stop it from happening and covered it up 🙁😡 anyway looking forward to your other video's when you can post them 😀👍🏻
Awesome video Chris! Very informative. What about edelbrock carbs? are they as tunable as holly? Anyway great seeing your videos and looking forward to the next one!
Sadly soon all combustion cars and trucks including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Car washs will be forbidden too because they are climate killers, now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime.!!! (BABVVEN & TEBBVEN & BEFVO laws)!!!!!!
Hi mate..great video....i have holley 650 with 4 corner idle and air bleeds...running rich on idle ...i have gone from 68 size IAB to 72 on primary side only and running heaps better..do i have to change all 4 IAB to the same size as it has 4 corner idle ..cheers steve
I have a edelbrock 650 and I can take out both idle screws and the engine still runs….. doesn’t stall out or smell rich and I have no idea why it still runs. I never took it out on the road like that….. when the screws are in they are in about 1 3/4 turns…..
Not sure but I think the 340 and possibility the 360 used a fatter wider cast around the motor mount casting the strengthen up the block from flexing cylinder bore. Maybe try a 318 mount instead. Hope this helps you out.
Some 30 plus years ago I had a 68 Charger with a 1968 440 that came out of a 68 New Yorker and had a 600 Holly on it and I regasted the engine put it in the charger rebuilt the carburetor got the car painted and I live in Jacksonville Florida and I'm from Eden New York decided to go on vacation in New York and drove the charger for whatever reason I don't know I found out after I got back that I had the timing too far advanced but that road trip was $1,200 miles yes I believe at that time was maybe a dollar a gallon I put gas in that car three times on the way to New York I figured out my mileage and I couldn't believe it but I got 40 miles to the gallon I couldn't believe it I figured it again I know I put gas in it three times along the way cuz I put it on a credit card and it still showed I got 40 miles to the gallon
Those are race carbs, though what you say is 100% right. Fool injection is for fools!! Factory is obviously ok but as soon as you start 'tuning' it it goes to shit. And all the aftermarket is crap. Even the high end ones to some degree I have a 400 cube Galaxy mildly modded with a Edelbrock Performer and a 670 street Avenger where you cannot play with the mixture on low speed,, the metering block is fixed. But at 75mph on the open toad it gets 20mpg and if you use the secondaries it is bum down and gone!! I use a streetfire ign box with a decent coil and it starts and idles like an efi engine. When I bought it 21 years ago it had a 780 vacc Holley from a Falcon GT with a modded factory intake. It went quite hard but was a bit 'dohey' down low. Carb was too big. Though top end performnce was excellent,, but I seldom ever use top end anyway. Most Holley and derivative carbs are fairly good out the box. Though the more efficient the breathing the richer they will be. With very good race heads and intakes you often go down 4 main jet numbers, even more.
Injection is far better than carburettor, Injection saves you fuel, Sounds like you had a cheap low quality injection setup, which isn't good The fuel injection ECUs now are amazing, the sensors and data logging is unreal compared to 10-20 years ago Plus injection you don't need to keep adjusting like carbs etc Each to their own 😁
tbi not so good thats what i keep saying & those of us who grew up with manual choke did all this on the fly especially in winter not to mention with drum brakes in rain having to think about start pumping the pedal 200ft before the red light

because they cant tune them with a laptop.....
Love the education man! Your channel is grass roots awesomeness.
Good to see ya back on here.👍
You know it’s a bachelor pad when there are trophies on top of the kitchen cabinets. That’s badass. Great carb tutorial

Happy 4th of July Chris thanks for sharing that was very interesting and helpful
You’re a star buddy. Love your videos no matter what you take them with.
Really missed your videos

This video changed my world, seriously, Thanks Chris. Go Roadkill.
I always felt like a carburetor gives you instant throttle response compared to fuel injection. Then you add drive by wire and something is lost. Feel more connected to a car with carburetor. My $.02
This video gave me a lot better understanding on tuning a carburetor.

THAT is the reason manufacturers fit vaccuum advance!!
I was just talking about you and the fact I hadn't seen a video from you in a while! ✌🏼🇺🇸
A cool video would be recommended number of gear sets for three speeds versus say 355 and higher definitely appreciated your coverage on the carburetor tuning 🤘😎
What an invaluable video! Tons of super important and very often overlooked information right here. Thank you for passing the info along my man!
Thanks for the heads up on the EFI. Mine keeps doing unexpected things. Im thinking it will never be right.

That was a lot of information . Never really understood carburetors but thanks to this video and some others I'm getting a better idea lol
Good vlog Chris I like knowing more about holley carbs
Thanks Chris 👍👍👍👍👍
The most perfect fueling solution ever.
The ultimate controlled fuel leak. Second only to the hoky barrel valve, it is known?
Great advices, thanks a lot! Will definitely rewatch a couple times while trying out what you've mentioned.

Love your explanations!👍
Had a 71 Dodge Power wagon with a 383 4 barrel 727 get 20 MPG with 35 inch tires.. Carter AFB 750.
🦅🇺🇸💪😁👍 great video as always thank you.
Awesome video Chris! Very informative. What about edelbrock carbs? are they as tunable as holly? Anyway great seeing your videos and looking forward to the next one!
we miss you birdsong. your bloody knuckle pals.
Happy 4th of July weekend I hope that you had Chris
Welcome back brother.
What is that Yellow car in the Garage? Something special? And what kind of work does it need? Far from being done? Or close?
Hell yeah
Toilet bowl carbs run best-est more betters.
God Bless
😎
I feel your pain I've got 5 hard drives full of my tech tools etc. Good luck
HOLY SHIT!!! HE'S ALIVE!! Great to see ya Chris!! 19mpg because people don't know how to f'n drive!!!!
Thanks for the info .
Awesome video Chris. Can't wait until you're back
Good stuff! Very helpful, Thx!
Emulsify is the right term. Right the first time.
Very technical 🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟👍👍👍👍
Hey Chris do i like your videos u do and I'm looking to buy a charger for my first one how much u think I'll need to save
Thanks for the information
I like this charger I wanted one my whole life and I'm 47 years old and I still want one
If you want it bad enough you will get it.
Me too, I'm 32

We need a " go fund me" for Chris' new computer....
They have decent ones like HP at Office Depot for $400-$500.
Get msd 6al 2 programmable, with this you can get plenty of cruising advance using map sensor.
Thanks, that was informative and well explained.
Under the carb, would'nt a dual plane manifold be more efficient than that single ?
not with his cam
Is there a name for that kind of carb? How much did you pay for a carb like that? What do used carbs like that go for?
Great to see you Chris 😀👍
Just remember as a back up they do make a USB SD card reader. I bought one because mine kept going out.
What is inside the fuel return line? 28:04
Once the '68 355, BPO350, and 4:11 posi gets in the 79 impala sports coupe, gonna be referring this video again.
Good to hear and see you Bro
What is up with the battery? Looks like it is used as a hidden fluid catch can or something weird.

Screw the camera - the tuning lecture was just as good, on a phone:)
Don't forget the dropped socket
YOU DID IT AGAIN BIRDSONG!
Can you recommend the right motor mount brackets for a LA360? I have the ones from my 340 and one side doesn’t fit.
Not sure but I think the 340 and possibility the 360 used a fatter wider cast around the motor mount casting the strengthen up the block from flexing cylinder bore. Maybe try a 318 mount instead. Hope this helps you out.
Which Holley are you running on the Patina?
The Gray hairs are wisdom that leak out
Hope you get you reader fixed soon.
See you on Roadkill.
Would that work in SD on 20 year old bulid
Thought you were lost in the desert
🏁
Higher number power valve opens sooner. :)
Yeah that was a mouth-0 instead of typo

How many people still know how to do this anymore????
👍💪
Judging by the look on your face...you should definitely 🤣change beer brands...😐
Man, I started watching heaps of UTG. Get a new putor!
5 min vid just got over compensated zzz
Thank you for the info.
