Sure do miss this car but I’m glad to see she’s getting a new life!
Well dude you are a Mopar master I was surprised you did sell this car you do some really good videos to by the way
As soon as I seen it I knew it was your old one
Looking forward to the Diplomat being done man!
So that is Dylan's Duster , I wondered what happened to it, in fact I was just asking about it in another comment.
Both of y'all do have good taste in cars.
I am 58, and have projects like this. I do most of my work alone, like it seems that Derek here mostly does. There is a certain way that Derek makes this look fun, and not exhausting. But don't think for a minute that this is not hard work that beats you up every minute. And to do all of this while under the weather - yet keep it entertaining?.. These are qualities that I can appreciate. I went ahead & bought a Bland-National T to support all this. Bravo.
Thank you so much!
I don't remember the Guys name but a while back he built a 351 LS. Started out with a 351 block and used LS heads. If I remember correctly it was pushing about 500+/- hp. I'd like to say it ended well, but it didn't. They pushed it to the Max. I ate itself up from the inside out. He didn't take it to a machine shop. It wasn't balanced.
Good luck on this build, looking forward to seeing it run. Take care and I will Pray 🙏 for healing for you.
Derek is just one of the guys you know would be good to have around .Easy going and a hard worker super knowledgeable.
Im 57 and have 5 cars and realised yrs ago that if ya want lots of cool cars you have to work on them yourself or spend a fortune at a garage. Its usually never fun but very satisfying when you finish a job and know how much money you saved..
Yes 100%. I watch this content and can't help but wonder how many smashed knuckles, black fingernails, deep cuts, sore back and knees and swapping glasses so you can see aren't shown but must be felt making this content because I know when I'm working on cars that how it goes. Also the improvising required do when you need a third hand but you're on your own and have to find a way. It's hardly ever fun, at least not until it's completed and you appreciate the journey was worth the result.
I subscribed a few months ago, Found you through Cletus. I enjoy the videos so much I’ve gone back to watch all the historical videos. I used to be able to work on cars and now I’m laid up due to medical issues, but I can still get my thrill through this channel. I love your wit and it’s pretty cool you have your family involved. They appear very well raised and have awesome parents, and they will grow up to appreciate all they have been taught.
Same story, found through Cleeter and went back to the beginning. Definitely worth it and cool seeing the channel evolve over the years.
Nothing like drinking a cold fo'tee of PBR and spending some time with my favorite back woods mechanic Big Derek! Derek is why this country is as great as it is! Awesome Dustpan build!
Id love to see the white Cadillac with new rear wheel skirts and all cleaned up. That was probably one of the best recovery vids as well!
Poor Betty White been sitting a few :(
That was every young boys dream. In a feild Fer Pete's sake. Sooooo cool.
Stuck in the mud haha
That Cadillac recovery and subsequent videos were amazing to watch, what a beautiful and wonderful car that is.
Poor Betty, she deserves indoor storage.
WOOO HOOO!!! Saturday night excitement! Thank you for all that you do, Derek! As busy as you are, you never stop giving more to us, your fans! Bless you, my good sir!
@@paulwhitlock6666Ditto!
I just dig that Duster 😎
Hahaha!...ya need to organize yo keys!
Agreed
Lol
This is a great video! I will put up a video of the interworking's of the engine when we put it together this weekend for anyone interested! Thanks Derrick!
I like how he’s always throwing batteries around 😂. I’ve never ever bought merch off of a TH-camr. That changed when I started watching this channel. Got a closet with a bunch of VGG swag in it 🤣.
I really like how a guy has videos coming out at random non-scheduled time. Was wearing my VGG shirt today at the store and someone stopped me and said they also are a fan. Very cool. Thank you Derek for what you do.
Appreciate ya!
I built a Duster from the ground up from two Dusters at age 17, with no formal car knowledge, sure I screwed up a but, but I fixed it. After that experience you would think I never want to touch another car, no I wanted more.
My dad and I are fans. I bought him a shirt. Ol Derek here got us both saying, “I’ll be dipped!”
@ViceGripGarage hey Derek.. have you ever thought about getting into figure 8 dirt track racing??.. looks like it would be a blast for ya
Derek is a true Mechanic. I'm even saying Sparkulators 😂
And to think I started watching this channel when he had like 990 subscribers blows me away. Shoe lace polishing a crank I knew it would take off . One of a kind .
SAME!
Not sure how he isn’t at 5 million by now! Best show on TH-cam!
Yessir
Always loved these 70's Duster/Dart bodies.
You have taught me so much, I feel good that maybe I can give back. When the mill twist and leants over, take a comealong from the droopy side to your lift chain, she’ll come right back around.
Derek, I found this channel a little while back and I gotta say, your channel is treasure! I just love every one of them from start to finish. Thanks for allowing all of us to hang out with you while you work on these old girls. You crack me up😆
Oh man I'm kinda jealous you get to discover Derek's work this far into the channel, I remember rewatching the videos in his original driveway/garage
Welcome to the family :)
My late friend/ bro-in -law had a 73 Duster 340 4spd. Man we had fun in that thing. RIP Dewey. Dewey's Duster was red with the white stripes. 340 emblems on the quarters.
So far so good, love the unique engine build.
That's part of what makes your channel great.
Derek im loving this build so far cant wait to see more. Please do a repaint of this as well. I know my neighbors have to hate me because I love watching these as I wet my back neck and you always have me laughing loud as ever. Great video and as always thank you for the amazing content can wait to see what more is to come.
I struggle to watch a tv show when sick, this guy does engine swaps. Your a legend Derek 💯✊️✊️✊️
Derek & Jessica. The editing of your videos is really a notch above the rest. Very well done!
Glad you like them!

I live for weird engine swaps like this. Absolutely love this build. Never in my life would I have imagined viper rods going in a 318
I've got a 72 Duster project I'm working on getting back on the road, so I was really excited to see you digging back into this one with a super interesting shadetree hotrod setup.
Derek, you probably know that the 6 cylinder Mopar A-body k-members are considerably weaker than the V8 ones for stiffness/handling/hp purposes...and for fitting/clearing V8 aftermarket oil pans. I thought I'd mention it since you said you were gonna hop the ol' girl up to 485 ponies. Adding a V8 k-member and welding in a set of Mopar Performance subframe connectors to convert the factory flexes-under-torque unibody to a full frame is highly recommended with all A-bodies. In my '71 Duster I also installed a leaf spring relocation kit that moved the springs inboard directly under the frame on the back to fit wider tires and wheels underneath the car with a narrowed 8 3/4 rearend with a 3.91 posi and Moser axles. That A-body strengthening recipe makes for a bulletproof daily driver/burnout chassis that can easily handle 500 horses at the crank all day every day AND handle very decently too given the era of manufacture. A full front/rear suspension rebuild with polyurethane bushings (including on a V8 anti-sway bar) does wonders for an A-body for handling and good burnout control as well. And since I went high hp also, so I installed a poly trans mount too...everything that keeps the engine/trans from rocking much protects those oversized Milodon oil pan corners (we also notch the k-member flats ever so slightly for safe, no-hole clearance). ;)
I run the /6 k member in my post car, even the /6 torsion bars and it’s ideal for straight line drag racing
It’s great to see you working on the rigs that you already have, keep up the great work!
Thanks, will do!
Dear Vice Grip, all of the Old Small Block engines, the Mopar 318, The Ford 302, and the Chevy 327, ALL ARE AMAZING LEGENDARY ENGINES! Thanks Vice Grip for building THIS AWESOME ENGINE 🚂, WAY TO GO YOUNG MAN!!! Thanks for the video 📸.
Derek you made this look like such an easy installation, like it was meant to be in there. Can't wait for the rest of this series. I wear my OG Independence shirt and people keep enquiring about your channel. I have been telling people all about what they are missing by not watching you.
Takes one of the most expensive hobbies, building cars, and making it accessible to everybody. Love your thinking, love your rides, love your vids. Hope you have a great weekend Derek.
I don't know how you do all you do, but major respect! You're single handedly motivating the rest of us!
He inspired me to do what I do again and build my channel up. He has no idea what he has done in our community ❤
What has always amazed me about you is NO profanity. How you can be a mechanic and never swear is beyond my comprehension. I was a flat rate mechanic and could never have manage that. You truly are an exceptional human. OR do you edit that out?? I'd have nothing left to show! 😊😊😊
For me as a mopar and chevy lover this engine is just awesome 😊 I love the stance of this duster, mine looks similar, but I like this wheel and tire combo even more especially the rear tires!
😂😅😊
Wow! Two VGG videos in one week!? Love the videos Derek, please don't ever stop doing what you do. Been here since the early days and I'm one of the channels biggest fans! Congrats on taking 1st in the burnout competition. Much deserved!
I absolutely love how much harder you work for our entertainment benefit. You're a great man.
Thank you
That “318 LS” is a work of art! Coolest Mopar small block I’ve ever seen…(other than a factory340 six pack)🎉
73' duster was my first favorite car. My dad bought one the day my brother came home from the hospital in 1989. I still remember watching him pull up in it. My dad dropped a 318 in it. It would light a tire up around a corner 😂
From leaning tower of no power to weird mutt of spare parts power! Awesome start so far! Here’s to seeing it running and moving that car!
Hi Derek , thanx for hanging in to make this terrific episode ! I,m sure the wonderful Jessica is taking care of you .... sincerely hope you feel better soon !! 😊😊👍❤
When I first clicked on this video I was saying please don't put a 318 in it, but then I got to about the 50-minute mark and i was soooo excited! Now thats one hell of a budget 318! I should have bought a 70 duster when i had the chance but sometimes there just a little too far gone here in New England.
Thank you for suffering for are entertainment Derek, hope you feel better soon!! Can’t wait for the next one see you at duck tape drags 🤘🏻
One human, (sick) puts a V-8 where a 6 once set. All the while, crackin' us up every minute. Thanks Derrick, you're defiantly one of a kind. Can't wait to see part 2 and hear that thrown together mess RUN!!!!
I'm just wondering if the rear differential is going to hold up to this massive power output Derek is expecting? Hope it has a nice sound to it, albeit he says it doesn't like to idle!
Meanwhile given where I live I am happy to take 40hp difference in power to have the v6 version of my vehicle and save a lot of money getting more than double the gas mileage of the v8 version of my car. $5.45 a gallon for regular is not good I run 89 and I pay like $5.75 a gallon
I struggle to watch a tv show when sick, this guy does engine swaps. keep up the great work!
Love the restoration content! Good to see the cars restored and cared for instead of just revived
So glad to see you working on a project Derek! Revisions are an amazing journey, experience and show case of perseverance and determination! But, they sit there not being revived to their fullest. Can't wait to see this one blossom
Not gonna lie, still hoping to see someone work with these slant 6s with some modern upgrades and remain in the car. Sure it's less easy, but that's sort of the point.
This is the bob ross of motor sports haha thanks for what you do. You encouraged me to get my 71’ c10 up and running again!
I hope he don’t throw away the slant 6 getting harder to find
Boy. That software noise cancellation sure is fighting with those cicadas! Lol😂
Great stuff. My first car was a 75’ Dart with three on the floor.
Respect to guys at Vice grip garage and Restored guys, I like watching their shows.
Holy Moly, 2 videos in the same week, freaking awesome!
That is going to be a runner.
Great video as always 👌 👍 👏
Love your channel. In 1972 I bought a Plymouth duster with a 318 auto. Drove it for a while then rebuilt the engine, new cam, lifters, intake, four barrel carb and headers. Ran it on the strip was a fast little car. It took a lot of people by surprise, it ran like a skull-did pig. Brought back some wonderful memories.
Currently watching this from inside the cab of my 81 chevy great video as always Derek glade to see a feller work on that duster finally 😂
Hope you're feeling better soon Del Boy, can't wait to hear this wee beastie running.
Wow! Nice work sir. I’d have been happy with a perfectly functioning slant-six but now you’ve gone to another level.
This Duster with slant 6 would be nice to have. My father had a 1971 Dodge Dart with a slant 6 with AC and ran perfect.
In the military there was a number of vehicles ( trucks, cars and fork lifts ) that used the slant 6.
Yup...I owned a 1976 Dodge Aspen, with that venerable slant six...I bought it for $900, about 20 years ago. It had 70 thousand miles on it...Eight years and 100,000 more miles later, I sold it for $500, to a guy who said he could fix the slipping transmission. That car averaged 22mpg in general use, and the power was adequate. My gearhead friend dissed my Aspen, declaring it to be "nothing but a Cab!"...My retort was, "So what?"
Found you're channel about a month or so ago, and can't get enough, been binge watching through all your video's that you have posted, you're truly and entertaining fella, love the way you explain what your doing and the terms you use. Keep doing what you do, you're a heck of a awesome guy. Hope to catch you at a event sometime, especially out here in FL. Just recently moved here, and we just got a garage setup, so hopefully by next year's Sick week or Power tour we'll be roll in. Wishing you nothing but the best sir.
So good to see these old revival/drive it home cars getting pulled out the weeds and worked on. Appreciate all the work you put in to keep us entertained.
That engine is the definition of experimental and I Love IT!
I built a 318, with police interceptor 360 intake, heads and cast factory headers, a 930 rhermoquade and a functional zx-10 cowl induction hood scoop from a Comato hood.
. Dropped it in a 1972 Gremlin with273 gears.
How fun it was!
This guy likes 1 of a kind as well
This guy can work on practically anything under the sun. From motorcycles, to lawn mowers, gas and diesel engines, this dude is a genius. Love your videos, Derek! Thanks for being such a great guy. Keep up the good work, man. Greatly appreciate the entertainment. God bless you and your family.👌👍
Ive owned 2 cars in the past with the slant 6 engine, both were just amazingly reliable and have never seen or heard anyone removing a slant 6 before. This was very interesting and entertaining to see, thanks Derek.
I didn't do it myself but I had my brother in law do a slant 6 swap form a 76 valiant to a 73 dart sport. Then I let them use it until the heater core blew up. I can't remember what I did with that car, it sat around in my driveway and then I moved, I practically gave cars away. But that was 30 years ago
My dad had a d100 with the slant 6, but it was worn out, so he through a 360 in it
Derek, can't wait for the next episode of this Duster project. Keep up the fantastic work! God Bless VGG!!!
One of my top favorite Plymouths! I remember a feller picking it up and leaning on that brittle windshield washer reservoir, heh. Definitely looking forward to more on this rig, but don't overexert yourself, good sir. We totally understand if you need to take a week off to be sick; health is always more important than anything else after all so make sure you keep up with that first and foremost😄
Fellete here! That was a fun video. And you had fun doing it, in spite of having a cold? Which speaks to your always positive attitude, always finding a way to make things work, and always being an inspiration. Thank you, Derek!
Keep up the great work Derik!
We like the revivals, but the hot rodding on a realistic budget keeps things in reality for the average guy.
I've been around since the beginning,
Thank you for staying you!
Hope you have a speedy recovery Derek.
*That Duster has ice cube maker WOW Top of the Line!! Might make a Great Sunday Go to Meeting CAR!!*
Can’t wait for the conclusion on this project! I like unique projects and this is definitely a 1 of a kind set up! Great work brotha!!!
What a awesome weekend two vice grips, hope you get better Derick
I really enjoy this episode of the 73 duster . Brings back memory's when my brother had his 73 duster his had a 340 and was standard . His pass away now so when I see someone work on or has one it cheers me up and makes me think of my brother and the good times he had with his car . Hope you keep working on it till its finish and hear it run and drive.
Ooook man you are officially the Steve Irwin of automobiles at this point! We as fans need to throw you a big ol honky tonk sooner or later brosef,i watch all your videos end to end without skipping.
always good to see a duster getting some love.
Hey Derek, lookin good! A lot like my Duster- 318 stroked to 390 (but NOT with an LS valvetrain, nothing wrong with Ma Mopar's if you do it right) with 727 trans that I built basically in my driveway. I really wish I had a lift like yours, I'm gettin' too dang old for crawling around under cars! Can't wait to see how this beast turns out! Keep the MOPAR stuff coming!
Amen to that!
Being old and under cars hurts more now. Keep going.
318 strokes out to 390 😱
Mopar or no car!
@@brianf8621 Only if you use a 4" crank. Derek is using a 3.58" crank, same as a 360, but with 318/340 mains.
I had a duster like that. I took the slant 6 out and replaced it with a 383 wedge head . Man did it run !
Had a 73 Duster in '92.
340 6 Pak
4 speed
5:13 gears
Fun times !! 😊
I love your sense of humor. You had me lol a lot. I'm really looking forward to seeing this project done and seeing what it will do. I appreciate all your dedication being sick but still working hard to give us great videos. Thanks!
He's gotta feed that TH-cam algorithm, but yeah, he has a great work ethic.
I love the zero fooks given aproch to your engine removals Derek no messing just keep yanking till she comes flying out.
I see ole Betty sittin back there. I've been following you since that revival. Keep it up VGG!
did a slant 6 engine swap in a 73 dodge dart with a friend in 79...was a fun time. brought back good memories...
Yes!! Great build with a super cool unique engine. Viper rods?? Wild - can't wait to hear this thing run. Love it! (Take care of yourself and get well Derek)
I grew up in the trunk of one of these Dusters. The back window deck was missing and we used to go from the back seat to the trunk.... cool to see a v8 swap. Always wanted to tinker with one of these. Love the show Derek. Keep on keepin' on man. 👍👏
Doing the rite stuff to that awesome Duster I'll b looking forward to the next steps on it 💪 👍👍👍
I had a '75 Duster. A great car. that slant 6 was used for at least 30 years.. they lasted darn near forever
Love me an hour (+) long VGG revival!!! Thanks, Derek, for entertaining my Saturday night.
Love watching these builds, Derek is always coming up with totally different and unique builds.. Love this channel.
I once had a 318 topped off with 360 heads, a four barrel intake and a carter AVS carburator. The tranny was a Torqueflite 727. Ihad lots of fun with that set up. Have fun.
Love the idea that the Jay Dee Em crew would want to swap in a slant six to most things, because the 2 jay zed has such respect (no shade on a decent engine!) and Derek's here swapping out a different slant six. Great vidjye as always, Derek, love the content.
When Derek says “story for another day”, I genuinely believe he’s going to make a 90 minute video dedicated to that story.
He ain't gone back on his word, yet....
Slant 6 are so awesome
Thay are the best motors around
I'm enjoying the heck out of this!!!
Really appreciate Derek keeping things "down to Earth" kinda-sorta.
Lots of WELL FUNDED, BIG $$$ shows that dump tons ca$h in builds that us common folks could only dream of.
Can't wait to see this rig come to life! 😊
Get better soon mate looking forward to seeing it finished 👍
Hope you get to feeling better Derek! Love the car and yes I would love to see a new paint job on her. I like patina but sometimes a nice sleek paintjob is sweet. This car deserves it! Love your videos 💯
My favorite channel. When ever I have a project that is a bit much, I watch a couple of Dereks videos for motivation. They get my head right for wrench turning
Great project Derek, excited to see more of this.
Been waiting on the ol duster to make a return, I LOVE the originality on the motor idea. I always try to be different with my builds everytime and I love what you did with this! Very excited to see her kickin up some dust soon
I hope you get to feeling better. I really enjoyed this episode. Thank you making this even though you don’t feel well.
Not a dead battery, you hit the direction button, and it went in a bit. I do it all the time with my Milwaukee, love your videos
Great video! Nice shop! Derek shows what he thinking, and executes with humour. Thanks buddy for posting from rainy Vancouver Island.
I sure did enjoy the original revival, but something tells me this car is gonna be so cool when your done I can't wait to see it on my wall as a poster❤
For a giveaway that I didn't win😅
Live your videos and love how the whole family is involved you are a true inspiration sir thanks for letting us into you passion of working on these treasures.
Back in the day 1976 I put a 440 6 pack with a .four speed into a 72 dodge swinger(Canadian) with a slant 6 I changed the K frame bigggest problem was exhaust, used factory cast iron headers.
Can’t wait to see more on this build
Glad to see the Dustpan get some love. I was hoping for a 4speed manual but it is still one of my favorite cars you have rescued.
These videos just keep gettin' better! Thank you Derek.
