So I've lived in Kansas City for almost 20 years. I could tell Henry had some sort of non-American accent in his speech pattern. I love that you guys could immediately tell he's Canadian 😄 (and obviously, that makes sense)
This was the episode that finally got me emotional. Anyone who has looked out for younger siblings will understand. I knew it was coming, and it was still a gut punch. Making Sam younger and deaf made it hurt that much more. For me, this is the best episode of the series so far.
I played the game so even though I pretty much knew what would happen I was still saying like every 10 minutes “wow they’re really twisting that knife already”. Just giving us moments like Sam and Ellie talking about the Savage Starlight comics (which I hope to god Dark Horse comics comes out with a limited series of that comic) and then playing soccer was so beautifully heartwarming. And then we get to the scene I had been dreading throughout the episode which was the night Sam was infected. And they made it EVEN MORE heartbreaking by Ellie trying to heal Sam with his blood and failing. But what really broke me was that the very first time Henry ever kills someone, even if they’re infected, that it was his baby brother. Then ending it with Joel and Ellie burying them, and Ellie writing to Sam “I’m Sorry”.😭😭😭😭
They talked about another little detail on the Podcast: Sam not attacking on his own until his senses pick up that someone is there, are also a strong indication that he is still in there, just like he feared.

One of the things I've always supposed from the game, and I think applies to the show too- when Joel is trying to get the gun from Henry, he's not worried for himself. Maybe he was at the beginning when Henry shot the ground in front of him, but after he shot Sam he wasn't worried about Henry shooting him. He's trying to get the gun from him to stop what he knows is coming. Also those bastards for giving me some small semblance of hope that Ellie's blood could be some magical medicine even though I knew it wouldn't work
Isn't that just obvious? I don't think there's ever a single second where Joel is scared of Henry, not even their first encounter when Joel wakes up with the gun in his face. Joel, after everything he's lost + Bill's letter + the info that Henry unveiled to him throughout the ep, Joel knows exactly what Henry's purpose is... to protect Sam. I thought it'd just be obvious to viewers that Joel knows Henry is going to turn the gun on himself.
Many would blame Ellie for Henry and Sam's tragic ending because she took it upon herself to try and save him and in turn taking away the time the brothers could have used to say their goodbyes. It could have been better for them but alas this episode just shows us how young she is. She is a literal child who, for a while now, has been told that she's special, important, the 'cure'. So she thought and hoped that her magical blood can help save her friend. Too bad that isn't how it works because why would it? That'd be too easy. Ellie is growing up fast and is hardening from all this traumatic experience while Joel is getting attached.
It just shows how good of a person he is, he never means to harm just save/protect. He saved Ellie on instinct. It was just unfortunate in this instance that the threat was Sam.
I still can't get over how they've done such an incredible job adapting the game to live action, while also giving us the necessary detours and new angles to make it work as a series. Also, the soundtrack is just as masterful as in the game and the guitar chords hit at all the right moments 👏

Excellent acting by Bella in the scene where Henry shoots himself. I instinctively felt the fatherly urge to hug her. I cried 4 of 5 episodes and I love this show
I love moments like sam showing ellie his bite, then her revealing shes immune to him. That didnt happen in the game, but makes it all the more soul crushing to know ellie believes she can help him. Those little tweaks keep fans of the game invested and surprised.
Henry and Sam are/were my favorite characters in the first season. It takes a hell of a lot to make me cry and when Sam asked Ellie “if you turn into a monster is it still you inside” makes me shed a tear…. So powerful
This show and episode is soooo good because it gives you the good and the bad. Kathleen with her devotion to her brother (to the worlds ends literally) and Henry’s devotion to his brother. There is no end to what human beings will do for people they love. Masterclass is writing and visual storytelling.
33:30 you hit it on the head. Kathleen let down those people and got them killed because she couldn’t let to her need for revenge. The sad part is her second in command Perry believed in her (partly because of her brother) but you could tell he knew she was screwing up. Even in the end he was still trying to protect her and be loyal.

It’s a culmination of everything from previous episodes.Joel said u keep going for family, that’s what motivated Kathleen negatively,Sam was Henry’s purpose just as Frank was Bills, both ending similarly but under different circumstances. Henry parenting Sam while joel parents Ellie but through Sarah, joel is becoming softer, Ellie more hardened., joel losing hearing in one ear while being around a deaf child. Best episode
at the end you tell joel has a moment when he looks at the grave of henry and sam and is feeling almost like this is going to end up being him and ellie if he doesn't protect her with his life and btw ellie is so strong i could not continue after seeing all that in 24hrs

The big guy is called the Bloater. Those infected creatures has been around for 20 years. In the game, in order to kill one of those things, you have to throw a lot of stuff at it to kill it. Molotov, set bomb traps, and shooting that thing to death. It may sound easy as it sounds, but they're harder to beat than you think. That monster is stage level 4 in the game. The clickers are stage level 3. If the clickers live long for 20 years, somehow they turn into a Bloater over time.

Lovely reaction when I played the Henry and Sam scene i took the rest of the day off it hit that hard, and even knowing it was coming it hit that hard again and Ellie leaving Im sorry on the grave was even harder still........

You know what makes it more sad? Sam still hasn’t lost his consciousness when he became the zombie, he just couldn’t control his body to attack ellie. So he could do nothing but watch himself attacking his only friend.

Ellie and Joel switch sides at the end. That was the Tess moment from episode 2. Ellie runs ahead while Joel is still waiting at the grave. Tess gave Joel a mission he wanted to fulfill as her last wish. The relationship that Joel had with Tess was similar to Ellie and Sam. Ellie promised Sam the cure here and couldn't keep this promise. She now wants to make sure that this never happens again. As Tess said at the time "save who you can save". Ellie really has a mission now. Indirectly get through her feelings of guilt. She wants her blood to work. Before that, she was someone who had no control over anything. Others have determined where she grows up and where she has to go now. Now that has changed. Now conviction plays a role and she takes control. She wants to save the world so that there are no more Sam's. And while Joel gradually finds his humanity again and lets people into his life again, Ellie loses a little more of herself and she takes the lead here in the end. In addition, Ellie and Joel have reached a new level of connection with each other. Wordless understanding. Both wanted to save the brothers during the attack. That wasn't Joel's "don't do it Ellie" look. That was the look "I'll give you fire protection Ellie". And Ellie has absolute confidence in Joel. There was also a little joke about the game. The moment when the sniper shot and Henry and Sam senselessly ran out of cover, only to return immediately. This is how Ellie behaved very often in the game. She was AI-controlled and she liked to do it. She ran out of cover, right in front of the enemy and then back again.
In interviews in the past the director indicated the purpose for a lot of these characters is to be a mirror for Joel and Ellie. In this case in the game their death is supposed to remind Joel why it’s so dangerous to connect with someone in their world.
Damn, this was such a good episode, they keep getting better!! I can't wait to watch you guys do the gameplay, it'll be my first time seeing the game too. And JV's owl joke was one of my favourite parts hahaha XD
Infected come in phases. Phase 1 are called Runners, like Nana Adler, freshly Infected. Phase 2 are called Stalkers, like the one that Tess died with. Phase 3 are called Clickers Phase 4 are the big one called Bloaters. The first time we got a bloater in the game was with Bill. Then there is a Phase 5 (From the 2nd game)
It's not as easy as just shooting Kathleen. As soon as Joel takes her out, the rest of her men will blast the shit out of Henry and the kids before Joel reloads his gun.

I'm Canadian and I legit can't tell the difference between his accent and an American accent tbh, maybe it's 'cause I'm from New Brunswick, and the many NB accents don't sound much like ppl from Ontario
I think it’s always easy as an outsider to say “oh don’t seek revenge” or “just let them go”, it’s not our family personally, it’s not someone we love. As viewers, we are always gonna be more biased for the characters who are ostensibly the protagonists. But if this was our own loved ones being sacrificed for the sake of someone else’s family, suddenly forgiveness may not come so easy. Forgiveness is easier to say than do.
I’ve seen both games, and this episode still broke me, so heartbreaking. Especially when I saw the I’m Sorry, it all hit and I lost it. Such an amazing episode, so many ups and downs! On a side note, I just loved the scene at the beginning where they met, and they mention Joel’s tone. Omg loved it.

What super fucked up is that Henry's decision to snitch got EVERYONE killed, and he ended up having to kill his own brother in the end anyway...and Sam was already on borrowed time.

Ellie calmly accepted Sam's bite because it was not her first experience and she knew that he would turn later and gave him hope, encouraging that her blood was medicine + Sam did not attack Ellie during sleep because the sun was shining on him (remember the 2nd episode) otherwise she would have been dead and she was just lucky...Get ready to cry again when Ellie meets David

You went full Emperor Palpatine here. For the record, I don't blame you, lol. I wanted Kathleen gone too =P 22:51 That's called a bloater. This is one of those 20 year old infecteds. These guys were extremely hard to kill in game and just as scary as you see this one being here, though in the game spores were a thing that you had to worry about, which is something they took out of the live action version of the story, as humanity would have died out a long time ago if infections were caused from an airborne thing like spores. 26:44 Ellie and Sam should have told Joel and Henry at this point in the story! We know from the FEDRA poster in the Boston QZ that Sam still had a chance of survival: -bites to the head, face and neck take 5 to 15 minutes for full infection -bites to the torso, shoulder, arms and hands take 2 to 8 hours for full infection -bites to the leg and foot take 12 to 24 hours for full infection Arms, hands, legs and feet can be amputated, so people bitten there can still live, as we saw with the amputees in the Boston QZ. The problem Henry and Sam would have still faced is that they didn't have the tools or medication to help Sam survive--they couldn't go back to the city and who knows how far away the next safe place was from where they were with medical supplies to help Sam. He was likely dead either way, but they could have prevented his turn and they could have given time to accept his little brother's end ='( What a series, huh? Great story, but rough.
I would say we saw what happened to the people missing from the settlement in the tunnels. I figure they locked themselves into a safe room when they encountered an infected, unfortunately one of them was probably bit and the rest is history.
I knew it was coming but wasn't prepared for the ending. How does that work?? I was just hoping that that was one part they changed from the game. Idk why I was just hoping. I was crying real tears at the end. Ellie seriously thought her blood would cure Sam. Which makes it even more heartbreaking on top of him being deaf.

Nah not at all. Highly forgettable 1-episode characters. What's unforgettable is the part 2 of the game (game of the year 2020)

@SeeJaneGoTv This change of Ellie trying to use her blood to save Sam was a brilliant change the show did, like Bill and Frank staying in love and dying together in love was also a better change the show did. Lovely reaction when I played the Henry and Sam scene i took the rest of the day off it hit that hard, and even knowing it was coming it hit that hard again and Ellie leaving Im sorry on the grave was even harder still........

You know what makes it more sad? Sam still hasn’t lost his consciousness when he became the zombie, he just couldn’t control his body to attack ellie. So he could do nothing but watch himself attacking his only friend.

@@ibrahimhamza5571 because he was a "runner" runners still have their full consciousness so they are aware of everything happening but they have zero control they know and feel what they are doing but have no power to do anything about it - runner is the first stage (the ones that seems kind of like generic zombies) then the next stage is "clickers" where the person who once was no longer exists - this is the lore from the games at least

Ellie and Joel switch sides at the end. That was the Tess moment from episode 2. Ellie runs ahead while Joel is still waiting at the grave. Tess gave Joel a mission he wanted to fulfill as her last wish.
The relationship that Joel had with Tess was similar to Ellie and Sam. Ellie promised Sam the cure here and couldn't keep this promise. She now wants to make sure that this never happens again. As Tess said at the time "save who you can save".
Ellie really has a mission now. Indirectly get through her feelings of guilt. She wants her blood to work. Before that, she was someone who had no control over anything. Others have determined where she grows up and where she has to go now. Now that has changed. Now conviction plays a role and she takes control. She wants to save the world so that there are no more Sam's. And while Joel gradually finds his humanity again and lets people into his life again, Ellie loses a little more of herself and she takes the lead here in the end.
In addition, Ellie and Joel have reached a new level of connection with each other. Wordless understanding. Both wanted to save the brothers during the attack. That wasn't Joel's "don't do it Ellie" look. That was the look "I'll give you fire protection Ellie". And Ellie has absolute confidence in Joel.
There was also a little joke about the game. The moment when the sniper shot and Henry and Sam senselessly ran out of cover, only to return immediately. This is how Ellie behaved very often in the game. She was AI-controlled and she liked to do it. She ran out of cover, right in front of the enemy and then back again.
Was waiting for you guys reaction this episode was heartbreaking.

In interviews in the past the director indicated the purpose for a lot of these characters is to be a mirror for Joel and Ellie. In this case in the game their death is supposed to remind Joel why it’s so dangerous to connect with someone in their world.
Damn, this was such a good episode, they keep getting better!! I can't wait to watch you guys do the gameplay, it'll be my first time seeing the game too. And JV's owl joke was one of my favourite parts hahaha XD
Infected come in phases.
Phase 1 are called Runners, like Nana Adler, freshly Infected.
Phase 2 are called Stalkers, like the one that Tess died with.
Phase 3 are called Clickers
Phase 4 are the big one called Bloaters. The first time we got a bloater in the game was with Bill.
Then there is a Phase 5 (From the 2nd game)
Phase 4.5 are the Shamblers
Phase 5 is the Rat King
(They are all in part 2)

I think it’s always easy as an outsider to say “oh don’t seek revenge” or “just let them go”, it’s not our family personally, it’s not someone we love. As viewers, we are always gonna be more biased for the characters who are ostensibly the protagonists. But if this was our own loved ones being sacrificed for the sake of someone else’s family, suddenly forgiveness may not come so easy. Forgiveness is easier to say than do.
I’ve seen both games, and this episode still broke me, so heartbreaking. Especially when I saw the I’m Sorry, it all hit and I lost it. Such an amazing episode, so many ups and downs! On a side note, I just loved the scene at the beginning where they met, and they mention Joel’s tone. Omg loved it.

At the end of this episode, when u see the horde of infected run out of the collapse sewer tunnels , it's easy to imagine now how fast they took over the world. We would be screwed

What super fucked up is that Henry's decision to snitch got EVERYONE killed, and he ended up having to kill his own brother in the end anyway...and Sam was already on borrowed time.

Ellie calmly accepted Sam's bite because it was not her first experience and she knew that he would turn later and gave him hope, encouraging that her blood was medicine + Sam did not attack Ellie during sleep because the sun was shining on him (remember the 2nd episode) otherwise she would have been dead and she was just lucky...Get ready to cry again when Ellie meets David

@@thedrizzle06925 So you didn't watch the series well because Tess says that because of the sun, the snappers (even though Sam didn't fully become them) can't move, and what does deafness have to do with it if the light from the window was the blocker (besides, this is even mentioned in the series reviews, not counting Tess's words)

These guys were extremely hard to kill in game and just as scary as you see this one being here, though in the game spores were a thing that you had to worry about, which is something they took out of the live action version of the story, as humanity would have died out a long time ago if infections were caused from an airborne thing like spores.
26:44 Ellie and Sam should have told Joel and Henry at this point in the story! We know from the FEDRA poster in the Boston QZ that Sam still had a chance of survival:
-bites to the head, face and neck take 5 to 15 minutes for full infection
-bites to the torso, shoulder, arms and hands take 2 to 8 hours for full infection
-bites to the leg and foot take 12 to 24 hours for full infection
Arms, hands, legs and feet can be amputated, so people bitten there can still live, as we saw with the amputees in the Boston QZ. The problem Henry and Sam would have still faced is that they didn't have the tools or medication to help Sam survive--they couldn't go back to the city and who knows how far away the next safe place was from where they were with medical supplies to help Sam. He was likely dead either way, but they could have prevented his turn and they could have given time to accept his little brother's end ='(
What a series, huh? Great story, but rough.
I would say we saw what happened to the people missing from the settlement in the tunnels. I figure they locked themselves into a safe room when they encountered an infected, unfortunately one of them was probably bit and the rest is history.

The "big" ones are Bloaters. The whole body is covered in fungus growths and act like armor.

I knew it was coming but wasn't prepared for the ending. How does that work?? I was just hoping that that was one part they changed from the game. Idk why I was just hoping. I was crying real tears at the end. Ellie seriously thought her blood would cure Sam. Which makes it even more heartbreaking on top of him being deaf.

Not only ellie but Henry, Joel saw how his statement was wrong because Henry RELIED on sam to stay alive and protected to live with himself, his Judas sin betraying a good person to save his brother all for sam and ended up having to do this, Henry’s life depended on Sam’s and vice versa…
