"Funky Friends" was a mid90s cartoon centered on four childhood friends growing up in the city and finding relaxation in a slowly changing world. From following litefeet shows across trains, to midnight burger runs, to improvisations with their band (dubbed "Bing Bang Bong" AKA "BBBs" AKA "BABES"), the show tackled life's problems with a funky air of serenity; perfect for a coming-of-age series leading up to the turn of the millennium. With a minimalist yet alluring aesthetic and brilliant child writing, it's no wonder that people still talk fondly about "Funky Friends". Starring: Kerry Greycat: Defacto leader of the group (by only being two months older), you wouldn't be able to tell that this kid wasn't even a city native. Despite the introverted personality and slight culture clash, Kerry is amazing at planning the activity of the day and keeping the group centered and "funky". They are also the go-to friend for when one of them needs to vent and work through feelings. Overall, Kerry is simply one *cool* cat! Crocodonal "Didu" Dindi: Kerry's right-hand man and brain behind the band, Didu is the alley skater alligator of the group. Always willing to one-up the others and loyal to a fault, he will do his best to enhance the fun whenever possible. Don't let Didu's hazy attitude fool you, this reptile usually has the solution to the gang's problems; Just be patient! Bella Bluefish: When it comes to parties, this fish never flounders! It might not be as enticing but I feel like dialogue (VA'ing) wouldn't fit this show. Rather I see each of the animals having their own distinct sound attributed to their voice, with custom subtitles. This way, you could have people talk off screen and still have the exact character recognized by the viewer. Filling out the show would be distinct and wondrously full background with some absolutely awesome funky groovy music. It wouldn't be an amazing, action-packed, leaves you going, "Holy Shit!" kind of show. Maybe the fish is seen as lesser because he immigrated from the Ocean Colonies. Maybe the alligator is always thought to be this rude and horrible guy because he's a predator. Things like that. Okay now I really want to write a pilot episode for this show.
This album fits in really nicely with its theme, it captures the funk, spunk and laid-back vibes of a slice-of-life 90's cartoon with hair-splitting accuracy (along with the general Louie Zong liveliness). Terrific work! Plus, I bet these funky little dudes would've gotten a sick liscensed game back in the day, I'm thinking a PaRappa / UJL clone with an explorable hub world and witty dialogue.

The characters may be sliiiiightly too young to have a part-time job idk. But I could totally see rabbit guy's older sister working at an ice cream/shake place idk
Rabbit Dave was always my favourite growing up - they were really cool and unpeturbed by anything, but not in a dismissive way, and they still showed they cared about their friends a lot. The crush arc kind of came out of left field for a lot of fans, but it showed they could also be vulnerable, and had to embrace that to grow and risk a little, which was really good writing IMO
Oh I so agree! As a fellow introvert, it felt really nice seeing other people respect their boundaries and look up to them at the same time. Rabbit Dave was my hero as a kid.

I feel like the show would be short, with only 7 episodes representing the 7 music tracks (not counting the credits). Each episode would focus on different parts and aspects of these characters lives, such as partying or going to a burger joint. The last episode could focus on a crush that the cat character has, and while it wouldn't be a conclusion that people talked about for years upon years after, it would be thought provoking and it would tug on your heartstrings a little. A short series that tries to teach you important values.

You occasionally see the orange streetlights pass through the windows. Wrapped up in the 5 loose hoodies you have because the driver didnt want you to get cold. Turnstyle Hop: Hearing that good old game intro from your first disc game. Good old Wii/Gamecube that you got from your grandparents turned on for the first time in a decade or two... House party: That walk into the house on the last day of school, feelin like you just graduated college. Nothin new after that day, other than the lack of work, or projects due. Just, calm. Bodega on the corner: Seems that elevator of zoning out kicked in during that meeting/class. Your head subtly bobs to the music, no one noticing, as everyone else is either asleep or doing the same. Darkening, warm light pours through the lightly tinted windows, revealing that floating dust around the room. Heading downtown: Hell yeah! New outfits just came in, after 4 long weeks... You try them on, and they are slightly oversized, but thats good cause you can wear them more! You never go out for fun, but you feel good today... Maybe its the cloths, or the way the neon signs around the city make their own daylight, but you wanna just go around with your closest buddies. Have what the call a "night on the town." Midnight burger joint: 1am. Is it early? Late? Or is it just a nice time to be awake... No loud cars outside, or neighbors in their garage outside, just this minor feeling to do something strange... Did water always taste this good. How the heck did I go through all the tea? I bought some today? I haven't seen this movie in a while, or even used the cd player... Maybe a crush: Want to go to bed but not tired. Want to sleep but not wake up... Of course not forever. A few... weeks should do it. You hum to yourself, and feel like someone you love is humming along with you, and you feel that little swell in your chest, the good kind of chills run up from your barefooted feet to the ruffled hair on your head. End credits: Lil jazz never hurt anyone. Walking around the halls of your workplace/school with headphones on and any song from your phone. Cant hear any loud voices. Like your own little dream...
Slip the cat is an aspiring keyboardist on the outskirts of a large city. He's got virtually no chance of making it big in the city, until one day he finds a flier on his school corkboard of a brand new band club. There, he finds unexpected friends and funks out in friendship. AND THUS, THE FRESH NEW BAND, THE *FUNKY FRIENDS* IS BORN!
This is so far my most listened to album of 2022. It feeds the part of me that turns on old episodes of Hey Arnold, The Simpsons, and Family Guy most nights before bed, to remind myself of the feeling of drifting off to sleep/waking up in the middle of the night on my friends couch when I was 12, with the TV still playing softly. I was a little past the 90's kid mark but the feeling is well captured here
This may sound odd, but I would like to see Funky Friends as a rpg maker game. Just. A game where you play as these friends going on a 90s adventure in the city?
@@ironwraith852 I cant think of any other ideas so sure! They fight the BLUES(not to be confused with Blues music), the feelings of doubt, pain, and other sadness that resides in peoples hearts. At the end of battles the awaken their hearts to FUNK and help them process that sad stuff(because you can never really "defeat" sadness, just learn to understand it and move on.)
@@OneColdRepublican Perfect. 10/10. Concept of the Year. You’ve been nominated for the Funkiest Dude Award. Sorry, I misread that. You won in a landslide. Enjoy your trophy.
Louie, my dude, you should look into creating a TH-cam exclusive show on your own! Get close friends to help you voice act, or heck, you can do it yourself. This seems like such a cool show idea
Pleeeeeeease make a cartoon with these guys hangin out and solving day to day problems. Maybe do a collab with some other animators or something but this is sooo good.
here's my plot for the show: Maurice the Cat along with his friends Will the Croc, Finley the Fish and Quack the Duck have to deal with everyday life in the big city and at school while trying to get popular with their underground band Funky Friends. Also Maurice has a crush on a Hippo girl called Rita (which they would get together in a season finale and be in a relationship in the next season. This is also where the song “maybe a crush” would fit.) Maurice would be the leader and the character viewers could insert themselves into. Will is the tech smart one. Finley is the kind of goofball guy but is always useful. Quack is the little guy who everyone looks out for. The show would be very comfortable and have a nice relaxing vibe while teaching important life lessons which would resonate with all viewers, young and old. The show would end with them winning a big contest and finally achieving their goal as a satisfying conclusion to the series.
Is this the score for episode 2? Where our funky friends have have to make a sandwich shop work after scrounging up some money they find in a suitcase in a garbage. Good episode, really nice way introduce people to the series.
This seems like the kind of show to have wacky plots that have themes grounded in reality, and tackles surpringly mature topics in most episodes. Oh, and musical numbers are always rap songs
This show got only 1 season before it was prematurely cancelled, but years later it still has a niche cult following. Often described as ahead of it’s time, Funky Friends will live on through hot topic merchandise for years to come.
Yall remember in S1E12-A "Fish and chirps" when fishy and peeps fight over whose ordering the best burger at the burger joint?, always liked that episode
Setting: apartment building, kitchen. The bunny goes to the kitchen. Bunny: oh my- (crocodile) what did you do to the cereal? Croc: oh well cereal has a lot of sugar. Bunny: so? Croc: so I replaced it with rice. Less sugar and no fat. Croc scans Bunny. Croc: and by the looks of it you definitely don’t need any of that **Laugh track** Bunny: Well I don’t know who in their right mind would eat rice for breakfas- Fish walks into the sene, grabs the rice and chugs it. Fish: yo this cereal is amazing what brand did you get? Laugh track goes insane
I like to imagine that instead of writing a pitch presentation, Louie goes up to TV executives and goes "I have an idea for a show, it's kinda like" and he just busts out a few notes on a keyboard. "Like that".

This may sound odd, but I would like to see Funky Friends as a rpg maker game. Just. A game where you play as these friends going on a 90s adventure in the city?
Do they fight Sadness? Because I can’t think of anything else that would attack these funky lil’ dudes!
Edit: other people’s sadness, of course.
@@OneColdRepublican Bruh start coding, I'll be your PR for free
Louie, my dude, you should look into creating a TH-cam exclusive show on your own! Get close friends to help you voice act, or heck, you can do it yourself. This seems like such a cool show idea
Love the interpolation of "Tea for Two" in the end credits, a lovely lo-fi jazz cover!
Idk why but this sounds kinda like one of those really good games made off of a show and the soundtrack never gets boring even though its like 6 songs
ooh im loving the vibe of these
YESSS im so glad there is more 😍
I imagine this to be a side-scroller game very akin to Night In the Woods 😌
YES finally someone else gets that nitw vibe like me
FINALLY SOMEONE GETS IT!!! Dude this gives me sm nitw vibes its insane
Funky friends is now my new favorite show that never existed
The end credits got me BUMPIN while taking my final exam OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Pleeeeeeease make a cartoon with these guys hangin out and solving day to day problems. Maybe do a collab with some other animators or something but this is sooo good.
this whole thing gives me really strong "hey arnold" vibes and i absolutely love it ❤️ thank you for making this
hah, commenting before reading credits 🧠 amazing job, louie
These songs are all really chill and nice, and I love seeing the friends hanging out
See now I just wanna watch the cartoon
here's my plot for the show:
Maurice the Cat along with his friends Will the Croc, Finley the Fish and Quack the Duck have to deal with everyday life in the big city and at school while trying to get popular with their underground band Funky Friends.
Also Maurice has a crush on a Hippo girl called Rita (which they would get together in a season finale and be in a relationship in the next season. This is also where the song “maybe a crush” would fit.)
Maurice would be the leader and the character viewers could insert themselves into.
I would watch this show since it seems so charming with the art style combined with the music
Noice
I like the dancing blue guy.
12:39 Favorite Part 😥
it reminds me of "A kitty bobo show" from back when cartoon network had a pitch/pilot contest. Very calming and fun to listen to
Shame that only got one pilot, but the music was good in it.
I love Loiue’s music, it’s so full of character
two seconds in i was like "hey arnold, yes, im down" lol excellent. already on board.
I like to imagine that the solo at 3:50 is sung by the little yellow guy.
This-this is art🤩
Is this the score for episode 2? Where our funky friends have have to make a sandwich shop work after scrounging up some money they find in a suitcase in a garbage.
Good episode, really nice way introduce people to the series.
This seems like the kind of show to have wacky plots that have themes grounded in reality, and tackles surpringly mature topics in most episodes. Oh, and musical numbers are always rap songs
If I ever become a milionaire, i'll hire Loui to make this show and air it on TV
"maybe a crush" absolute gem! Thanks for your art
I can tell I'm gonna listen to this on repeat until I die, thanks
It’s giving Hey Arnold and I love it… 🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷
Maybe a crush is cute!! I can imagine it being played at a school prom episode or something
An album with an arc is unheard of for me. Amazing work, you have made not quite lofi but not intense either and I love it.
Thanks Louie! Discovered you recently and currently are my go to morning jam for uplifting vibes :)! Thank you so much! I mean it! ✌️🩵🏝️💫🛸
what do you mean imaginary? i most definitely grew up to this show.
amazing as always, louie!! thank you for continuing to share your work :’)
Instant hey Arnold feeling from this
the drop on turnstile hop tho
Hey Arnold, Kitty bobo and Mission Hill wrapped up in one album
how do you pump out such quality music so often???!! I would watch the hell out of this
Do I even need to tell you I love this
This show got only 1 season before it was prematurely cancelled, but years later it still has a niche cult following. Often described as ahead of it’s time, Funky Friends will live on through hot topic merchandise for years to come.
oh damn I expected fosters home for imaginary friends but this?? THIS IS HELLA FUNK!
Definitely "maybe a crush" and "end credits" are my favorites from this, great work Louie.
"Maybe a crush" is incredible.
This feels more like an early 00s cartoon to me, but holy fuck I love it. Turnstyle Hop is a turnstyle bop.
Oh yeah I remember this show now! Used to watch it after school all the time, great covers Louie
These songs evoke the same kind of urban charm that Hey Arnold has. Especially that last song, and I don’t think I need to say why :P
This soundtrack is awesome! It perfectly captures the feel of a show from the late 80s or early 90s. I'm a fan for life!
HE DID IT
mhm.
"Maybe a crush" is really cute !!!!! >w< i love it
Even now having the full soundtrack of the show it only makes me want more of these funky fellows, something about them just brings me joy.
not even done listening to it all but this is LIT
just perfect... that bassline in the beginning never fails to draw me in
This is pure heavenly bliss. Thank you for this glorious soundtrack
heading downtown is SO nice, reminds me of beastly by vulfpeck. whole album kinda has vulfpeck vibes
I keep returning to this and loving it more each time. You've awakened something in me. Thanks!
Total Hey Arnold vibes and I live for it
i love this album so much. it’s so groovy 💕💕
God damn please make more vinyl lp’s.
Ik I need every one of his albums on vinyl just TAKE MY MONEY
They return! The choice friendos!
this really captures the exaggerated swagger of funky friends
Yall remember in S1E12-A "Fish and chirps" when fishy and peeps fight over whose ordering the best burger at the burger joint?, always liked that episode
I hope someday this is a real show
Setting: apartment building, kitchen.
Croc: and by the looks of it you definitely don’t need any of that
**Laugh track**
Bunny: Well I don’t know who in their right mind would eat rice for breakfas-
Fish walks into the sene, grabs the rice and chugs it.
Fish: yo this cereal is amazing what brand did you get?
Laugh track goes insane
They’re back! Funky Fellas 2: Electric Boogaloo :)
