    Hi there! My son, who is 12, got his motorized wheelchair almost a year ago and the jump in his independence is amazing and so awesome to see! He used to have to wait for his aid at school or another kid to push him which was upsetting for him after a while. He also has Autism so having more independence was a double edged sword. He loves the chair but he also needs to focus when using it and not get distracted by sensory overload etc. I am glad you also have this opportunity now. You will definately see an increase in quality of life.
    Best wishes!

    Jaquie, you hit upon one of the most frustrating things about chronic illness, that just because you rest, it doesn't mean you'll feel any better! It's so frustrating to spend the day in bed because I'm in too much pain to do anything else, & then to be in just as much pain at the end.of the day, & to know that just because I spent the day resting doesn't mean I'll feel any better the next day!

    I'm going to the doctors office early this September to see if I have EDS and POTS, and at first I was really scared, but I've been watching your videos for a while and it's making me less afraid! I know what to expect for the most part, and I know everyone's experience is different, but since you stay so positive I feel like I can live a great life even with those illnesses 😊 thank you Jaquie!

    Tug is an excellent thing for Harlow to know. Katie has only known me in my wheelchair. I've never played tug of war with Katie during playtime. She only uses tug to open drawers and cabinets for me. I love seeing how different handlers work their dogs in different ways that works for you and your disabilities. Keep up the great work with Harlow. I am def rooting for you to do well together when you get your chair. One small recommendation is to work with her with the leash not attached to the chair in some way. That's why I state 4ft leash. You can roll it shorter as you need it for in close and unroll it always in your left hand. With it in your hand you can still easily roll your self and it's much safer for you and Harlow than attaching the leash to you or the chair. Again hope this little tidbit helps you both. It's done wonder for Katiegirl and I.

    Thank you Jaquie for being so strong even through the worst of the worst. I'm only 14 and I deal with anxiety pretty badly when I'm in public. You help me so much because your always positive and you look on the good side. And it's hard for me to do that but watching your vlogs and seeing you stay positive is just so inspirational. Keep moving forward! Thinking and praying for you!❤️😉😂😊

    Thank you for sharing your story with the world! I suffered with chronic pain (migraines, vomiting, malnourishment, severe joint pain, and fainting spells) for over 5 years but because I was 15 years old and still managed to play basketball, and TAEKWONDO (3rd degree black belt) people assumed nothing was actually wrong with me. I was "faking it for attention". Eventually my weight dropped to 95lbs (I am 5ft 9in) and I quit basketball and taekwondo (losing my college scholarship).
    After years of searching I finally found a doctor who listened to me and at the age of 19 I got the simple diagnosis of Celiac Disease. It took over a year of a gluten free diet until I finally started feeling better and my migraines and vomiting disappeared. I still suffer from severe joint pain due to years of malnourishment but I have since put on 30lbs and had over 5 surgeries to fix my damaged joints. Now I am finally feeling like a 21 year old college student again and am considering going back to taekwondo. I hope that eventually the same shall happen to you.

      The best thing to do is to OFFER to open the door for a disabled person. It's really jarring for a stranger to suddenly start trying to help, especially because sometimes what people think is helping is actually detrimental or harmful. I've had people yank doors out of my hand or randomly push me, and it's usually not helpful and makes me feel bad about stuff. When you see a disabled person struggling to do something, ask before you just jump in. Sometimes things just take us a little longer, or we need to do them differently, but we don't always need help.

    I know you didn't ask for advice but I find bathrooms the trickiest places to use a wheelchair so I'd definitely practice doing that asap! (washing hands took the most practice for me!)

    • @ChronicallyJaquie
      @ChronicallyJaquie  7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Such a good point! We already struggle with bathrooms in my transport chair, especially ones with sharp turns once you get in the door

    • @animatedpancakes
      @animatedpancakes 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Chronically Jaquie yeah tight turns are hard but being able to do pivot turns in your own chair helps with that a lot! I've actually found that I prefer the ambulatory stalls (the ones with bars on both sides) when I'm using my wheelchair) because I just roll in, do my business and then back out and I don't have to do any weird turns 😅 but that might be too tight of a fit for you and Harlow haha

      Chronically Jaquie my husband was in a chair before he passed. We found them tricky too. Whenever possiable if we were out we would find a family restroom, so much more room. It made it so much easier. One thing I learned real quick, and I am sure you have noticed too, even after the ADA laws, public spaces were just not made for those of us with special needs.

    Jaquie I love how positive you try to stay. I recently found your vlog. I have a chronic illness myself, although nothing as serious as you. However one of my closest friends has GP and has really been struggling. I saw your vlog pop up on my recommended videos and was taken in by how honest and true you are about what you go through. You try to stay positive, but aren't gonna sugar coat it either. I subed and sent her a link. She loves your vlogs too. I know from experience it helps to know others are going through the same types of things and see that they fot trough and maybe an answer you never thought of comes too. That wheelchair is gonna be amazing for you. My husband was in a chair and oh goodness yes the darn doors. Even with help it gets tricky sometimes. I love your little rig up, and Harlow seems to take to it. She is so awesome btw. A good service dog is an amazing help and companion as well. Sorry that got really long, lol.

    Opening doors in a wheelchair is definitely a pain but luckily I have to open many at school so sooner or later you'll become a pro. It's just a lot of swinging and angles and just sometimes it works, sometimes it takes a few tries. Just keep trying and you'll get it

    Please remember if someone asks to help let them as it makes them feel good that they've helped. I open doors exactly like your friend does withough a dog, I found it really hard at first, especially when the door opens towards me and they're heavy, but this is the easiest way to do it for me, because resting the door against the wheelchair makes this way easier.

    Check out "extendable snake hook" on ebay for your next gadget. They're awesome grabby sticks for reaching things when out and about in a wheelchair. They don't have the strength to be useful in the door situation, but they will work for most lift buttons and for groceries or anything else that's too high or too far back on a shelf. I couldn't handle life without mine now I'm used to having it with me! (folds to about 10-15cms to hang on the back of your chair & extends to about half a metre when you want to use it)
    & love your positivity! :))

    I went out to get groceries by myself for my first time after knee reconstruction surgery. I wish more doors had the buttons as it was very hard with crutches and not weight bearing on my leg. Some doors are really heavy. I used the electric cart at Shaws for my first time and I didn't hit anything. It exhausted me as I crutches thru Walmart.

    Important thing to remember is to figure out how to navigate pushing a heavy door when you're in a wheelchair, or worse, one that requires you to turn a handle to go inside. This has been by far my most challenging problem from my wheelchair, because many of these doors are too heavy even if I wanted my SD to push them open, which I wouldn't risk as it can lead to very bad injury if it goes even slightly wrong. I've been doing my research, but let me know if you find any alternatives!

    • @ChronicallyJaquie
      @ChronicallyJaquie  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Har can pull open, but not push. For pushing it seems like you need momentum, but wayyyy easier said than done I bet. It will be a learning process once I get my chair. for sure!

    • @Mscak10
      @Mscak10 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      i'm not in a chair but my stepfather was and i think he would back into the heavy doors... depending on the way the door opens.... i was usually the one pushing... those extremely heavy security type doors may require some help

    How does the G tube get to your stomach?
    Does the feeding tube hurt regularly?
    Does it restrict your movement at all when you're hooked up or when you're not hooked up?
    What are the chances of the extension and the rest of the tubing come apart does it stick together tightly?
    Is there a lot of drainage from your stoma or does it depend on the day?
    How do you deal with home health and is it easy to get more supplies?
    How often do you have to have the tube changed?
    Have you experienced any granulation tissue yet?
    If you were unhooked from your nutrition would you be able to lay on your stomach?
    Is it uncomfortable sleeping and being connected to your nutrition?
    Do you have to wake up in the middle of the night to flush your tubing like you do during the day?
    Have you had any problems with the pump itself?
    Have you gained weight since having your tube?
    (Trying to think of all my in depth questions because I am probably going to be getting a G/J or J tube in the near future because I have Gastroparesis too)

    • @evelynsnyder5866
      @evelynsnyder5866 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I remember from her vlogs, it doesn't restrict her movement, it doesn't hurt necessarily, There is some drainage which she uses a pad to absorb. She has experienced some granulation tissue. I think she made a video somewhere called all about my feeding tube. You could look at her play lists.

    Great hacks. I take Katiegirl my Golden Retriever Service Dog on a short 4 ft leash held in my left hand as I roll myself with her in the heel position. It def works excellent. When we go through doors I open the door myself and Katie walks in close and behind my chair as I go through she's comes through directly behind me. I also have joint issues. But it works perfectly the way I'm describing. Hope this helps

They are educational and funny and have really helped me come to terms with living with chronic illness and accepting the idea of having tools to help maintain independence, even if I don't need them all the time currently.

    To get into doors, I normally wheel myself beside a door, open the door with my one arm, and then put my free hand on the door frame and use my hips and arms to pull myself through the door. Perhaps this is too much strain and energy for your use, but that is how I open doors while in a wheelchair.

    Hey jaqui, about your feeding tube and food: can you describe how it physically feels like to get food thru a tube and not thru your mouth? In passed vlogs you've said you like the banana bags room temperature so it doesn't feel cold in your body, is that the same with the other bags? I'm used to eating with my mouth and am curious if there's a difference. Like, do you feel full or hungry? Looking forward to you video 😁👍

    Just a warning about doors in public, (I don't know if doors in public in the US are as heavy as ones in the U.K.) but they can be super heavy and resting them on the chair can work, but they can be difficult to push off the chair to then wheel through, especially with a super lightweight chair. (I don't know if this makes sense...!) Even with service dogs I know people that struggle with those doors so it truly is worth practicing as you may have to adapt your plans. I know I did when I first went in my chair and I only have to think of myself!
    (No negativity here, just speaking from years of experience!)

    Why does opening a door considered a potential harm to joints, but tugging with Harlow is not considered a risk?

    • @ChronicallyJaquie
      @ChronicallyJaquie  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I cannot really tug with her, I have to let go because she is too strong and it is bad for my joints. Every once in a while I will just to let her have fun with me because I want to despite risk, but Judd mostly plays tug with her

    Hi jaquie! So today I have kind of a difficult question. I've recently been diagnosed with many chronic illness's (sorry if I make any spelling mistakes english is not my native) and my worry is not actually me but my boyfriend. He's been with me through all this process and he's been amazing but, here it goes... I don't think this is going to be fair for him I mean to watch me slowly become into someone very different of who he fell in love with. I don't want him to suffer. I know i might get judged because of this but, as you have judd, i would really love to know your opinion. Thanks ahead jaquie!

    • @ChronicallyJaquie
      @ChronicallyJaquie  7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      If he loves you it should not matter. I am sorry I do not have a long reply to this, but in all honesty that is it! Judd and I love each other and will be with each other through everything. We promised each other that in our vows.

      quandila I used to worry about this with my partner but eventually she eventually got me to understand that, though my body and therefore my activity changes, she loves the essence of me that does not change. Things change in any relationship with life circumstances like kids, jobs, etc, and also people change just as they get older. In any relationship this can either cause tension or be a catalyst for the people to find new ways and levels to connect together. I have made sure I always find ways to show love and support her within whatever level of ability I have. Creativity and flexibility is key when things change in a relationship regardless of the cause and type of change. The most important thing I think is to communicate and not shut each other out of how changes effect you both and make you both feel. I had to learn to trust my partner to make her own choices about wanting to be with me and stop trying to 'protect' her from the hard aspects of being with me. Trying to decide for her what was or was not good for her in being with me was more hurtful to her than just letting her decide for herself.
      Interestingly, I said things can change for anyone, well my partner has since developed a chronic illness of her own and, although I hate that I can't physically see to her care needs as much as an able bodied person, she has found being with someone who understands disability and chronic illness is more help to her than anything and we both lay bed bound next to each other day after day giving each other total support.

      quandila I feel like being Chronically ill is the ultimate test Within yourself first, then when you are ready a significant other! In the past I was thinking like that. MY current situation, I have fallen for someone and we know we want to be together but also know that we both have hurdles to cross and quite a distance. For me, i have to still learn "adulting " the best i can. Also learn tobe an individual. Maybe taking a step back so you can get a handle on new diagnosis and if he's still there for you... There you have it!

      If your boyfriend loves you then like Jaquie said, it shouldn't matter, I don't have experience with a relationship but even with medical issues he should still love you because of your personality, not how you look.

      quandila my husband ended up with many health issues before he passed. I loved him because of him for better or worse, sickness and health. It didn't matter to me he couldn't do what he used to, we found new things we enjoyed together. I stood by him until his very last breath, as did he by me when I got sick (I too have chronic illnesses). True love sees past our issues to who we really are. If they love you, truly love you, it won't and shouldn't matter.

      some dogs are sort of strong enough to pull a chair, but it's not good for them physically, or for a service dog to be learning to do things like that. She needs to get a "smart drive" once she's used to her wheelchair & using it lots (that's a little motor wheel that clips onto the back and keeps you rolling at the speed you pushed up to until you tap the off function)
