- Today, hot from a viewer request, I give a brief tutorial on how to make a Hoya tower/cage trellis. This simple DIY project saves a ton of space, and displays your plants beautifully. Initially I wasn't sure that I'd love these, but I sure do now. It's the easiest and most efficient way I've discovered to present Hoya, lots of Hoya, lots and lots of Hoya!
Then we'll look at the marvelous Hoya MB1594 'Sunshine' (mindorensis x MB 1228), and trellis a few. Time to evaluate these fast growing plants and get them ready for Spring sales.
I have wasted ALL the money so that you don’t have to. This is what I use to grow my plants.

I was a *little* off on my guess as to how old the H. MB1594 'Sunshine' are. They are likely more in the 5-6 month range. I didn't realize, I guess, that it's almost May 🤣😂🤣
Hey, back! I wasn’t sure anyone would enjoy that. I sure enjoy them, too. Cheers!
First time viewer. I only have 1 Hoya It’s a Hoya krimson princess. I would like more and I think the trellises are so cute. Thank you for the video and for having the heart and spirit to care enough to get Hoyas out into the world affordability.
This is the first time I’m watching your video. the Trellis making with the rabbit fencing it’s such a good idea and very simple. I will try it. thank you.
You bet! 😀
Love these specific Hoya videos!
I’m not the only one dropping my plants on the floor doing a repot!😂
Maybe we should collaborate on a channel of repotting mishaps 🤣😂🤣
First time watcher, great content with a little humor thrown in, can't beat that!
Sandy, you had me at “humor” 🤣😅🤣 thanks much for the comment!
Hello from Ontario, Canada. Just found you and subscribed love your video. I am a new Hoya head since Nov.2023 and up to 40 different types most switched to PON. I love your attitude wanting to share your plants at a reasonable price. I have spent way too much $$ but I wanted them and have no other choice but to pay. Will binge your videos when I have a chance hope to learn lots. Thanks 😊
You are off and running! Thanks so much for checking out some videos!! Cheers from Iowa 😊
The trellis making is so useful! I think it looks way better than the traditional hoop
Glad you liked it! And I appreciate the comment 😀
@@soberplantguy I also appreciate that you shared accidentally killing a Hoya, because I am accidentally killing a whole bunch of props right now and now I feel less badly about it
@@wootlesswocks Hear to help, my friend 😁😁😁
I made a wise decision when I subscribed your content and you are awesome
💚
WOW-thank you sooo much ☺️
I've been waiting for someone to make long from videos on Hoya trellising. You're doing a fantastic job with what I've seen so far. Good luck on your TH-cam journey 😊
Thank you! It's a learning curve, for sure. Cheers from Iowa ☺
Hi Dave, Many thanks for another wonderful Hoya video! Love your Sunshine videos. Your buyers will be thrilled to be able to purchase one. I’ve never owned one but she looks like perfection to me! I also use a moisture meter even though I’ve owned plants for years. Many of my plants I can tell by just lifting and feeling the weight of the pot. For my more sensitive plants I use the meter and it has saved quite a few plants from getting more water than is actually needed. Love all the good information you sprinkle in to your videos along with your sense of humor! Makes for a good time! Thank you. 👌🪴🥰
Ah, thanks so much ☺ I agree with your method(s) completely. See you in the next one!
Sounds good! 👌🪴🥰
Not rocket science… but definitely what I needed! Thank you!
I'm glad to hear it! 😃
Oh I have a question…. When the Hoya outgrows the trellis, do you have a method for extending it or do you switch it out for a taller one?
@@dontcallmepeaches596 Oh, that's a good one.... The first move I make is to lower the vines (once that growth tip is way up there) to make a fuller trellis. As additional growth points almost always begin elsewhere on the plant, I don't mind trimming it back. In the case of plants like the magnifica that I mentioned, I'll simply have to put it on a much larger trellis system. I'll no doubt be addressing this in a future video--thanks so much!
@@soberplantguy Sounds good! I don’t have anything particularly rare, but my Caudata is a vigorous grower and in need of a new trellis. I think your approach will work well for this one!
Hey thanks! Just when I'm planning on making some of these handy cage trellises, here you post a little tutorial! I like it!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for commenting, too!
@soberplantguy oh sure! I've been with you from the olden days. Bout 2.5 weeks ago. Lols. Just teasing, really enjoying your channel 🙂
I'm SOOO glad I found this video! Amazing trellises! I've found so many of the flat ones don't work well, specifically for hoyas!! I definitely want the Sunshine Hoya in my collection!! Thank you for a very informative, useful video!!❤😊
Awesome! Glad you found it useful 😊
Great video, love the humour ! ❤
Glad you enjoyed it 🤣 I’m sure the humor will get worse from here 😎
Hello! Clean in Canada. 1st time viewer. Fabulous video!
Thanks much! Cheers from down here in Iowa ☺
I enjoyed watching your videos; thanks for the ideas. I am a new plant hoya collector. I learned a lot from you, just this content itself. New subscriber, happy planting, sir.
Awesome! Thanks so much, and same to you 😊
Hi there!! Love watching repots!! 🌱💚🪴
I enjoyed watching David😌🙌😌I just did a trellis for my Mathilde after watching😉🙏
You did?! That delights me! Cheers from Iowa 😀
I'm doing it. Thank you! Love your channel and videos. Thank you!
Awesome! Thanks so much for your support ☺
Great video. I've wondered how those were made. Will definitely try it out. Your such a joy to watch. Thank you
Oh wow. What a nice thing to say! Cheers from Iowa 😀
I’m thrilled finding your channel! New on my Hoya journey. I spent a few years growing up in Tiffin IA! You mentioned expensive small orchid bark, I’ve been happy so far with fir bark I’ve bought from the pet store. It’s intended for reptile enclosures and you get much more for your $! It’s the same thing as orchid bark I’m almost ( 99% lol) I like mixing it with my coco chips and other amendments. Keep up the great videos!!
Hello fellow native! Great tip, thanks. And thanks for such a nice compliment ☺ I've got a real stone cold beauty in bloom, and that's going up Friday. See you there!
New subscriber here, love your vibe and calming voice. Having you talking about hoya will be a new habit of mine. (Also a big fan of Miro and Fern, so also liking you makes sense I guess!)
Oh, WOW--thanks so much! I shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as those two, but how very generous of you ☺
Love these! I'm learning so much. Classic Dave is my favorite!😂
Tom! I didn't know you'd watched a video. Now ... the pressure is on. Cheers my friend.

Really enjoyed your video. New to your channel and subbed right off. I buy the small hair clips at the Dollar Twenty Five Tree and they work well for me. Ha I felt bad for the plant falling on the floor. Then laughed because it happens to all of us. Just two nights ago after a very physically hard day for me I went to shower and forgot I had about 30 hoya plants in the shower drying after a nice little wash down. Yep I tipped three over before I got all of them put back where they belong. Of course the shower floor was wet and the soil was sticking everywhere and I was so dang tired. I cleaned it all up. Thanks for sharing your trellis. I think this would work on my old free dump shopped converted greeting card rack into a hoya tower.
Ah, yes. The $1.25 Tree--unless you wonder into the ooh la la aisle 🤣 I don't know why mishaps like yours need to happen while you're zonked, but it just does. And I love the creativity with your card rack. Very cool idea! Cheers from Iowa 😀
@@soberplantguy No kidding but it seems to be Murphy's Law. And of course I had to be up at the crack to make the 44 mile round trip to the grocery store for a sale on Chicken at 99 cents and 2 LB cheese 4.49. I loaded up on both. Made for a fun day at the thrift store where I volunteer. About 3 PM My brain totally flat lined. Cut myself some slack the last two days. At 75 all this effort kind of beats me up. And it has been really cold and raining. Back to more chores tomorrow.
Merci beaucoup pour vos astuces et conseils, je m abonne grâce au traducteur je comprends, bonne continuation
Avec plaisir!
New sub here! I am loving the idea for these trellis’s and will definitely have to try them! The moisture meter debate is ridiculous. I ran a plant store and we not only sold them, but we used them when watering all our plants. I use one at home and it has saved many plants lives! I highly recommend them to even the most experienced houseplant enthusiast.
I love preaching to the choir!! Thanks so much for the support, and the the nice note 😀
Im glad I found your channel! I learned so much from just this video! Now, a new subscriber. 😊 I'm just starting my hoya jouney as many others in the comments.
Thank you for making them more affordable and available to others! How are you selling them? I'd love the opportunity to eventually own a hoya that you've grown if I could. If not from this collection of hoyas, but from the future.
And I think we've all knocked over plants while repotting. Lol. 😂
You aren't an indoor gardener until a few plants have hit the floor 🤣😂🤣 I'm glad you found this video helpful--you are the audience I'm hoping to find. As for purchasing plants, people just email me at soberplantguy@gmail.com. That's in my "about" info in every video. Cheers, and thanks for the nice comment!
@@soberplantguy oh my gosh! What an oversight on my part! I'm sorry! I usually take the time to look there, but so often I don't find anything in the about section on anyone's pages anymore.
Thank you!!!
❤
Hi Dave👋 so good to see you and your healthy looking hoyas. You were saying h. Sunshine and I kept thinking my Sunrise doesn't look like that! Finally I got a duh moment, not the same plant. 😁 Anyway I love the cages. I use the bamboo round but the cage really showcase the leaves better! Do I put the name tags in my pots, no, I always remember! Yeah, right! Lol! Thanks for sharing as always! I look forward to your next. Dee, NY
Thanks, Dee! I mean, what’s in a name anyway 🤣😎🤣 ? Cheers from Iowa.
Congratulations on your sobriety!
Thanks, Amy! It has certainly aided my consistency over the years 🤣 Cheers from Iowa!
Your videos are so calming and also entertaining/funny. Its just the right mix!
Thank you for the complete and clear guide. Cutting off the bottom wire to have bits to stick into the soil is new to me, and so is the pre shaping it to the shape of the pot, Ill definitely try those for the next hoya that wants a trellis!
And what you said about putting some chunky parts on the bottom first because the coir/soil will get to the bottom anyway, never thought of that, but it makes so much sense!
My personal experience with over 60 different (mostly 1 node) hoya cuttings in 6, 8 and 9 cm clear plastic pots:
I found that some types grow right away when they have the tiniest of roots…. Some start growing leaves if the roots touch the sides and the bottom of the pot and stop growing leaves when they get more space to root (I dont mean rootbound, just touching the sides) …. And then theres also some that stop growing leaves when their roots touch the sides of the pot and those start growing leaves as soon as they have a larger pot with space to grow more roots. 🤔🤯😂
I like on your idea of selling small plants locally for affordable prices. It is a nice way to sustain the hobby if you like propagating and have the space for it. Sharing and making people happy that way is great!
First, thanks for that nice compliment! I agree with everything you said. Hoya aren't quite as predictable as some would lead us to believe. Such a fascinating genus. I think you'll be pleased by putting chunks into the bottom of your pot--really alleviates having a concrete-type substance at the base. My best, and cheers 😊
@@soberplantguy maybe it has something to do with the natural range of them 🤔 many different climates, lighting, heights, substrates…. Its just not a “one size fits all” care genus for the most part, but that is why it is so useful to see what other people do! Thank you for showing and sharing
First time finding your channel as I was looking for a DIY trellis. Thank you for the tutorial! Do you have an online shop? I’d love to see it.
Perfect timing, then! I'm glad you you found it. I don't have an online shop, but if ever you see something you'd like to buy, feel free to use the email address in my description. Cheers from Iowa ☺
I’m TH-cam challenged I guess. Can’t find your email. I’d love a sunshine to add to my slowly growing collection of Hoyas! Good morning from west Michigan
@@dawnlynema5832 So am I 🤣 soberplantguy@gmail.com Those props (not plants, I suppose) are doing grrrreat. Happy to send photos to you. Cheers.
Such a great video! So happy I found your channel! I looove Hoya. I also use my moister meter…I don’t know what I’d do without that thing! lol. What number to you let it get to before you water your hoya? I’ve been watering at a 1 but if I have new leaves or peduncles I water when the meter says 2 sometimes 3. But was curious to know how you decide? Thanks so much!
Hey, good to have you! I have two terrestrial Hoya that I water when the meter is on the lowish/mid side of green (no numbers on my $1 meter 🤣) Otherwise, I let it just begin to crest low green, approaching red/dry. The substrate I make, and the pots I use, make it very, very difficult to just lift the pot and tell if it's dry. They way almost the same right after I've watered them. Cheers from Iowa!
I buy the reptile fir bark from petsmart or any pet store it is cheaper and smaller chunks. My plants love it.
Thank you! I'm definitely going to check it out 😀
I had bought the wire to make these trellises. Thanks for the video. I enjoyed all of it. Oh, by the way, do you ship plants or sell locally?
Awesome! I hope you like these trellises as much as I do. I do sell locally, and am happy to ship. I'm making an effort over on Instagram @soberplantguy. So I can always be reached there. Or, my email here. Good to hear from you, Mary!
New subscriber. Loved your video. Would you mind telling what soil you use? Do you make your own?
Hey, thanks! I use roughly 1/3 each of medium coco chips, #3 perlite, and coco coir. I’m consistent on watering. A little more coco coir might work better for someone else. Cheers from Iowa 😀
@soberplantguy thank you. I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Great video! Are you selling the H. sunshine yet?
Hi, and thanks so much! I'm threatening to *actually* use my Insta account and post plants there. It's under soberplantguy. I also list my FB email under description. I'm going to let those props settle in, and they should be ready very soon. They're doing grrrreat. Thanks much for the feedback!!
Hi Dave, how do you make your prop box, everything I prop seems to rot 😢
Hey, Mary! Nothing at all special. I do use heat mats during the cooler/cold months, and open them occasionally. Thin leaved plants do sometimes rot, but it isn't a huge issue. Wish I could be more help. Or *any* help 😅
Where can I find info to purchase?
Hello, there! You can always shoot me an email from the one in my "about" page, or hit me on insta @soberplantguy. Cheers from Iowa!
Just the type of Hoya trellis that I’m after. Really enjoyed your content. New subscriber here. 🪴💚🌱🌿 Natalie
Natalie--thank you, and cheers from Iowa!
Are you n N C. Oxford
Hi, Betty. I'm way up in lovely Iowa City, Iowa.
“Attach it counterclockwise ‘cause that’s how Hoyas grow…” explain??
Good question--Hoya vines will naturally wrap themselves around anything counterclockwise as they grow upward in their search for light. If you do try to wrap it counterclockwise, your plant is definitely going to try to undo your good work 😆
Were are You sir , nice to no you are not trying to make a car payment
I drive a 2007 Impala, so perhaps I should be considering a car payment 🤣😂🤣 I'm in lovely Iowa City, Iowa.
Thank you for your videos. Your voice is so relaxing and I find it great fun to watch your videos during my Saturday morning chores. Your breakdown of how to make trellises makes me want to try it now. I watched Miro at @basieplants and I was intrigued, but didn't have the guts to go ahead and do it. You made it seem less daunting, and especially when trellising your baby Hoyas. Please let us know when you plan on selling your plants as I am very interested in buying. Thanks again!
Will do! I’m going to make an effort to pop in on my instagram account regularly starting … now 🤣 It’s also soberplantguy, so I can be contacted there, as well. Lots of great plants coming up for sale. Cheers!
