  • I know I always look at the "best" Hoyas and the "largest, but today I thought I'd think of what my collection would look like if I could only have 10 Hoyas. I currently have about 110 or so, so that would be a massive downsizing. I thought for a long time on what Hoyas I would keep for rarity reasons, for longtime fondness, for new fascination, or for gift of love and friendship. Here are my results!
    This is my first video with a brand new camera, and I know the picture is a bit green... I'm working on it. I promise the videos will get better shortly
    Here are time stamps below if you'd like to skip around on my video:

    I'm only in the first few minutes of this video and you have me at polyneura! Out of my 50+ hoyas, my 3 different varigated polyneura varieties are my absolute favorite! Oddly enough the only one I don't have is the regular green one so that's next on my list!

      Thank you - I found the ghost euphorbia at Lowe’s last year! I’m not quite sure what to do with the long horizontal arm on one of them 😅 I have a hard time getting the heuschkeliana to root and start growing. The main recommendation I would give on that is give it as much light and humidity as possible while rooting to try and spur growth.

    Love Miro, but wouldn't Doug Chamberlain be the OG of Hoya, at least in the States? My first hoya from maybe 30 years ago was of course a Carnosa so it is a forever keeper in my collection. Newer ones I'd keep would be my Calistophyla which is a slow grower but a dependable bloomer, my bella and multi fleura, both good bloomers that smell wonderful, and maybe David Cumingi because I smell carmels when it flowers. I have others like Elliptica, love the leaves and flowers but haven't owned it long enough to determine if it will be a trouble maker or not since it began as one and has such a bad reputation. I also love Patricia which has huge flowers. I guess I've decided flower size is an issue for me. If they are to small than maybe why bother. My Sheperdii is also special to me. I know very common, but again blooms into the summer. Thanks again Michelle for these videos and sorry for the long winded comments I always make.

    Thank you Michelle. So much information! What growing conditions do you recommend for the Caudata big green leaf?

    • @herrenfam
      @herrenfam  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you! I think the Caudata BGL likes to stay consistently a little moist. It’s always been unhappy when I run the pot out of water. I find it grows quickly in a high humidity environment. And warm temperatures - it definitely likes it when the temperatures warm up in my cabinet!

    Loved your video. You do such a great job of explaining what you have dealt with and done to solve any problems as well as maximizing the growth of each. Michelle, on one of the hoyas you mentioned cleaning up the roots on it. What did you do/mean by this. Thanks. Pam

    • @herrenfam
      @herrenfam  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you so much for saying that! What I was talking about was a video in which I repotted my heuschkeliana and I was saying that sometimes when you mess with the roots and retrellis a plant, you can disturb the plant and it will flatline. In that video, I repotted and retrellised a crassipetiolata splash, and that Hoya has kind of frozen in time and stopped growing from the shock.

      Thanks so much! Yes, the Waymaniae ‘Cloudy Sky’ does not seem to be going down much in price, when some other Hoyas have rapidly dropped in price. Hi. I really love your Hoyas. It’s the first time that I see a rotundiflora this size. Amazing !
    Could you share her care please. Do you keep it in ambient temperature. Light, fertilizer etc….
    I have to root mine in water before transferring it to Pon. It was not easy but I have several pieces that I have to combine in 1 pot soon.

    • @herrenfam
      @herrenfam  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have my rotundiflora in a cabinet that stays very humid (70%+) and it gets very warm, especially in the summer. It definitely grows more in the warmer temperatures (80 F and up) I use the general hydroponics flora 3-step nutrient solution at half strength for my plants, but I don’t fertilize every watering. Water rooting is a great way to start the rotundiflora before adding it to pon!

    10 hoyas….. thats such a difficult thing to choose! 60-70 is perfectly choosable…. sort of.
    I cannot seem to get lower than 40 and that hurts!
    Maybe if the criteria would become “10 that can stay in the windowsil all year long” but then it would most likely still be 20 for me 😅

      I would love to see your Hoyas - it sounds like you have a very interesting and diverse collection! I’m so static - when I find a place a plant likes, I tend to not move it too far from that spot!

    • @Wubblyt
      @Wubblyt หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@herrenfam I wouldnt mind showing, however most are still under a year old and nowhere near as big as yours! Some of the older ones suddenly started to bloom last year, which made me (too) enthousiastic and dive in head first.
      I agree, once a plant likes a place it becomes hard to move it somewhere else……. yet sometimes they enjoy their new spot even more.
