Can a D.I.Y. paint job be as good as a professional would do? Painting our narrowboat PROPERLY

  • Is it possible for us - two amateur DIYers - to paint our narrowboat and get a finish that's ALMOST as good as professional would achieve? We know it's a BIG challenge as the pro's paint in heated paint shops, that are dust free and they have all the tools and equipment they need - not to mention YEARS of training and experience!
However we are setting ourselves the challenge of painting the side of boat, outside with limited tools and a severe lack of experience - yet we want get the finish as close to 'perfect' as possible.
In this first episode we get stuck in by removing windows, the number plate and navigation lights before sanding the boat and giving it a coat of rust treatment. We also look at the steps we will need to take and discuss the items needed.
So please join us as we 'try to paint like a pro'.

I use to paint boats in a yard. We started with 100 grit and a large 4x8 vibrating sander, then 220 to prime. Came out flat and smooth with minor filling. Sometimes skinning the whole boat. 30 to 100 footers. When fairing keels I used a large grinder with a 12"x12" aluminum plate mounted to it. It was like holding on to a helicopter. Lol!

The more I sand - the more ‘issues’ I’m finding, this certainly won’t be a quick job!

Just had the pleasure of chatting to you and seeing the new paint job in person. Just as you stopped in Clayton le moors. Good to meet you and love the new paint. Hope you got that prop cleared without to much trouble.

Nice to see you. There was a LOT of plastic round the prop along with a large canvas shopping bag.... One of the downsides to boat ownership is delving into the weed hatch! Hope your search for a bigger boat goes well. :)

Hi Peter & Dawn we bumped into at the lock near wheellock near sandbach a few weeks back we were talking to you while the lock was filling Steve & Sandra on lady Bella just watched the video very good enjoyed watching very dusty job I suppose you are going to have to sand the other side down again due to the orange peel effect nothing you can do about it it is what it is I think you could sand that and give it another coat of primer this job you are doing not something I would want to tackle myself don't enjoy painting at the best of times even less when its 65ft each side then a roof as well NOOO .
great video guys hope you get the weather for it and we look forward to seeing the end results all the best Steve & Sandra Lady Bella.

@@stevecapper9321 hello! Yes remember talking to you.
The other side will need a sand back and sort out, at some point. I’m not keen on painting and the prep work involved so this is a real challenge for us - to do it ‘properly’! Fingers crossed all the effort is worthwhile!
Take care, and enjoy your cruising. 😁

You can get the chrome stripped from the chromed portholes ,something that most plating works should be able to do. A lot cheaper than replacement!

Nice job Peter and Dawn! All that prep work is exhausting, especially while on the canal and under the time pressure of limited sunlight and weather concerns. I have never painted a boat but, several cars so, was a bit surprised by all the coats of paint you were planning. However, with a steel boat sitting in water full time, that makes sense. I hope you are happy with the end result and you reward yourselves with the proper refreshments!

Painting is the one area where the truly "tight" thing to do is to spend the filthy lucre on good quality tools. Anything else is a false economy that you'll pay for later. preparation is probably the hardest bit. It takes a lot of patience to eperience the rewards!

    • @WingingItBoatingonaBudget

Yes, we have ordered the top quality brushes and masking tape etc, no point letting the job down for the sake of a few quid (much as I don't like spending money!) Fingers crossed the effort and cost is worth it in the end.

Great vid, the two of you managed to make a video about prep work both fun and informative!
As I was watching it struck me what gifted teachers you are - we learn valuable skills without realising it, while we're enjoying "hanging out" with two of our favourite TH-camrs.
Peter would be a star teaching "shop" in secondary school, these are skills we will need and use throughout our lives (unlike, for example, algebra for most of us ...🥱)

My dad was a school teacher (he retired a number of years ago), maybe his teaching skills rubbed off on me. However the thought of being in the room with 30 kids makes my head explode! 😂
Glad you enjoyed the video… 😁

@WingingItBoatingonaBudget - His skills definitely live on in you! You'd be the teacher the kids would enjoy hanging out with because you come across as a "regular guy" not some boring or pedantic drone that would talk down to them.
Had a laugh at the thought of you standing in front of class, head exploding...🤯🤯🤯

Great job you’re doing there, Pete. Well done. Good idea about leaving the portholes till last. Only one criticism… you should be holding the camera with one hand and with a pint in the other, and Dawn should be doing the grafting, or least making you a bacon sandwich! Don’t tell her I said this or she’ll probably lamp me one should we ever meet up!!! 😉 😊

I loved the cartoon character face popping out starting around the 5 minute mark - I was seeing Marmaduke, or maybe an orange Barney, or maybe, showing my age and American heritage here, Albert Alligator from Walt Kelly's "Pogo" - (my all time favourite comic, wish we had him today, I'd love to see what the swamp gang had to say about today's political scene!)

    Love watching your videos.
My farther is thinking of painting his boat himself, but is looking to use automotive paint as marine oxidizes too fast and less scratches.
Would this be an option for you guys?

If we were painting inside, using spray guns automotive type paints would be an alternative- but I don’t think would be too suitable to when painting out on the cut…

If you want to do it properly then you will have to take it back to bare steel, the sander you are using is useless for that. A 9" grinder with wire brush or better yet a paint stripping disk will save you hours of work.
