Project Campervan - Our VW T4 has FAILED its MOT
This week Instead of Boating On A Budget on our narrowboat we head for dry land - to our 1993 VW T4 camper van. A few weeks ago it FAILED its MOT - mainly on RUST, so now's the time to start getting it sorted. The rust is mainly around the rear floor pan / inner arches, so to get to it that means stripping out the WHOLE campervan interior.
To get this campervan BACK on the road is going take a LOT of work - including a fair amount of welding, which is NOT something we are familiar with, so once the interior is stripped we need t decide what route to take... do WE learn to weld, or do we PAY someone to do the welding. Being a Tight Yorkshireman I'd rather save some money and have a go at it, but is that a realistic option, especially as we are OFF GRID - so working out how to power a welder would be the first hurdle!?

Adding a BORDER to our newly painted narrowboat
มุมมอง 5K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
It's took a LOT of work but we are nearing the end of our painting project. So we needed to mask up for the border and get it painted. This will be a test to see if our 'painting like a pro' has worked - will the paintwork be nice and smooth and will the masking up leave nice crisp edges, making for a excellent finish? Not seen the video where we attempt the 'laying off' technique for the first...
Can amateur DIYers 'lay off' paint like the pro's?
มุมมอง 6K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
'Laying off' is a technique used by professional boat painters to get a smooth mirror like finish to paint work. It's a combination of putting paint on the boat with a roller, and smoothing it off with a brush - done well it really makes the finished paint work look really good. So can us to amateur DIYers master the laying off technique and get our painted "like the pro's would"? We don't have...
Filling, Sanding and Priming our narrowboat to get a professional finish.
มุมมอง 4.7K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
We continue in our quest for 'professional perfection' as we continue to sand, fill and primer the side of the boat - aiming to get it as smooth and flat as we can. Bearing in mind we aren't professionals, we don't have lots of experience and we are aren't in a heated painting dock - we are doing it canal side! Painting Primer like a PRO?
มุมมอง 6K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
WE continue with our quest to repaint the side of boat and get a finish 'almost as good as a professional'... Which considering we are amateurs, painting the boat canal side is quite a challenge! Non the less in this episode we continue with the process by getting some primer on the boat... Filling, Sanding and Rust Treating - DIY boat painting. Can we get a professional finish?
มุมมอง 4.7K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
We continue painting the side of our narrowboat, with the aim of getting it looking as close to a professional finish as possible... In this episode we sand back the first coat of rust treatment, apply filler to some areas needing major work, sand that smooth and then re rust treat the entire boat. It's no Quick task painting a boat - especially when trying to do it while the boats still on the...
Can a D.I.Y. paint job be as good as a professional would do? Painting our narrowboat PROPERLY
มุมมอง 7K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
Is it possible for us - two amateur DIYers - to paint our narrowboat and get a finish that's ALMOST as good as professional would achieve? We know it's a BIG challenge as the pro's paint in heated paint shops, that are dust free and they have all the tools and equipment they need - not to mention YEARS of training and experience! However we are setting ourselves the challenge of painting the si...
A day of DIY on our Narrowboat, fitting shelves and painting doors that cost us NOTHING
มุมมอง 5K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
Sometimes there's BIG jobs need doing on our narrowboat that cost a LOT, and at other times it's the little tweaks that are needed - and when things work out those tweaks can be done for FREE, and The Tight Yorkshireman's FAVORITE price is FREE!. So today we try to brighten up the storage cupboards that are at the stern of the boat - and add some additional shelves for more usable storage space...
It's a Slow pace of life on a narrowboat. 14 miles covered - 7 days taken
มุมมอง 3.9K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
Join us as we leave Middlewich and head to Preston Brook Tunnel. A journey of around 14 miles - but it takes us 7 days. The pace of life on a narrowboat is definitely NOT a fast on. Along the way we encounter our first wide lock of the trip, a aqua duct and 3 tunnels. We pass Anderton boat lift and we also moor up at Bramble Cutting - arguably one of the best moorings available!
Is BOATING ON A BUDGET possible? Let's look at the costs of LIVING ABOARD a narrowboat...
มุมมอง 8K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
One of the most common questions we get asked is... How much does it cost to live on a narrowboat? There is no fixed answer to that question due to SO MANY variables. But in this video we look at what OUR outgoings are - so hopefully you can relate to that and decide if you can afford to go 'Boating On A Budget' as well. view thedry docking video we mention here... th-cam.com/video/d0R1UL5jNfA/...
Is Harecastle Tunnel REALLY scary? Join us on a tour through Stoke on Trent
มุมมอง 3.7K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
With a few days of not doing ANY work on our 'project' narrowboat we decided to enjoy the sights and sounds around the Stoke on Trent area. So we visited the Wedgewood pottery museum, Middleport Pottery, Westport lake and finished off by going through our first proper tunnel - Harecastle tunnel. We stumbled across the 'Oatcake Boat', and seeing as neither of us has ever tried a oatcake it would...
Narrowboat TOUR. Have a look around our floating home.
มุมมอง 10K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
Come and join us for a tour of our narrowboat - 'Rose O'Leigh'. She's our floating home that we are travelling around the inland waterways of England in. We've owned her around four months now, and in that time we have done a few bits of DIY in her to make her feel like home - so come aboard to have a look at what she's like inside. Painting our narrowboat roof... Whilst discussing our travelling plans
มุมมอง 4.7K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
Let's liven up the dull job of painting our narrowboat roof by discussing our narrowboat adventures - and talking about what we have been doing on the boat. Our roof was VERY rusty and in desperate need of some TLC. That TLC came in the form of a angle grinder, lots of graft and a fair amount of paint... Not seen the video we mention about us getting STUCK in a lock? Watch it here...th-cam.com/...
Can we MOVE our LOG BURNER from the BOW to MID SHIPS?
มุมมอง 4.1K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
When we bought our boat our main issue was the layout... We wanted the bed at the front of the boat and the living area in the middle. To achieve this layout meant we would have to move the log burner - exactly how hard can that be? Well this week we attempt the move, so lets find out just how hard it is to re locate a log burner on a boat. We started last week by cutting holes in the roof and ...
Moving a log burner on a boat - How hard can it be...?
มุมมอง 4.9K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
To move the log burner from the Bow to Midships sounds a simple task, however this is work on a boat and NOTHING is simple. Lets start by fitting the roof collar (that the flue goes through)... Whilst travelling the inland waterways of England completing DIY jobs on our narrowboat can be tricky at the best of times - with limited tools and no access to the national grid for power tools being tw...

Stumbled across your channel and really enjoying the vlogs on the prepping and painting of the boat. Really informative, well narrated and throughly enjoyable. Thanks for sharing 😊 can’t wait to see how it progresses. Hats off to you both, some mega graft there 🎉😊
I think a powerful laser array would take everything off the Hull right back to the pristine steel below all that spongey rust. When I have seen them preparing for new Blackening with just a power wash I always get the feeling its going to be new paint over damp spongey material comprised of rust, minerals and growth still holding moisture against shiny metal that your eye obviously cannot see. I used to use a hand built pressure washer with a huge compressor for cleaning concrete floors at work which was so powerful it took two hands to avoid the kickback. That thing would clean hulls very adequately but the standard yellow ones just don't have enough power. They need to be able to remove car paint cleanly ect... I have been asking around if taking it back to metal and then using a Black oxide solution prior to 2pk epoxy would be a step in the right direction as fresh metal begins to film over to orange rust after just an overnight prep for the 2pk epoxy. If that orange film can be rubbed off with just your palm of your hand It can't be a great key to have the epoxy adhere or key to. Another option may be to grind back to metal for a quarter of the hull, then epoxy then finish one side and follow up not allowing enough time for orange rust film to spread overnight ect??
Enjoying watching your videos. Give me a little idea of what to expect on our 50ft project, which we plan on starting after Christmas.
Raiding the beer funds not on !!
Yes, I have a question: what do you do about insurance without a fixed address? I am wanting to go onto a boat but will have no address and no relatives address that I can use.
That's the answer I come here today looking for, thank you brother
Do you have your own jenny for 240
Are you both still cracking on? It's been a lousy summer with some nice days, not ideal for outdoor 'projects'. Hope all is well, see you soon?
Enjoyed the Vlog, my home turf of Nantwich, walked along that canal many many times! 🙂
I am hav8ng my laundry done every month, that's £20-35 per month, I get launderette do it for me, pick up and deliver
Thecprice of CRT costs are going up due to UK Govt cutting back on funding, this will mean maybe 10% increase pa, that's life.
A saving I found was to pop into charity shops every week, and I'm not an avid charity shopper, but I got a beautiful porcelain tea pot for a £1. A hand knitted beanie hat £2.00,
I buy block cheddar on offer, costs half the pricec of grated and is better flavour.. Block butter own supermarket brand, cheaper than tub of Lurpak. I only eat meat once a day now, . Ive just spent £240 for logs and coal etc, should last six weeks. I got some nice plates,, vase etc, also a modern North Face jacket for £10!
7:56 I know where this is going 😊 I made my own system where by hand I can unscrew my boards for easy access , maintenance and of course to avoid drilling into the structure of the boat.
4:36 that’s what I struggle in me boat for about 2 months and a bit. Yesterday I just went from thinking to do it. And I can tell you in one piece I nailed it. Now I have a template that I can use and abuse for as long as my boat will float 😂 🤗
James Thomas, fab song/tune!
I see Lyanda Lady is up for sale currently!
Just campers should have panels
This van was waiting for you Peter, a project indeed, best of luck.😊
Always wear a mask when grinding especially with bitumin because inhaling the dust causes cancer.
Please check out your emails, Peter .
Great video mate, thank you!
Needs a good clean
Good content as always
Oh dear, tin worm covered by fibre glass is never nice to have to deal with. It looks like something the previous owner knew about - did they tell you before you bought it from them?
Gold or silver. Your boat look great guys.
14:14 Previous owner KNEW that it was a bogded job and I'll bet it was never mentioned during the sale. Fiberglass "fix" is so dishonest, especially in the UK environment. 19:05 You can do it yourself. You've proven yourself to be a pretty handy guy. Buy an inexpensive flux-core MIG (get a gas unit if you can afford it) and watch some TH-cam. The key is to stack tack welds. Don't try and weld a bead longer than an inch at once. Too much heat is the death of sheet metal welding. Clean it and tighten the gaps and then tack away.
Looks like you both have your hands full with making old look new. I'm all up for you doing it rather then some odd job guy from a shady garage making a rip off job of it. I honestly believe you can do it your self's. And as a bonus your viewers would be right behind you giving you much needed support. The main chassis seems to be OK. So you have a good chance of fixing it and making it good. So come on Peter. get those overalls on and get started. 🖖👍
Love your new project, can't wait to see how she progresses xx😂😂 love 'me dawn'
My 2 favorite people to watch.always interesting, always fun to watch .love tne van love the different projects you do. always keep us entertained.
Watch these guys now get their hands on a camper van, hilarious….😂
Bloody hell! Who converted that van?
Well, this is different from your narrowboat 😅. Good on you both for deciding to take on this campervan project. You always do a grand job with your projects, so it'll be exciting to see the progress. Best of luck, both of you 👍 xx
exactly what did it fail on ? not seen anything i'd of failed it on yet [
Same thoughts as you. ;-)
I'd call this a MOT, lessons learned to make it better, refit. ;-)
❤ it 😃👍
Why not get one of these power-bank companies to send you one of their products, like all the other TH-camrs do?....
Perfect your welding skills. I’d love to follow you on your learning journey and pick up tips and tricks from you. I did a bit of arc and mig welding years ago and it’s something I have always wanted to have another go at. Having watched all your videos I know you wouldn’t cut corners and it would be a proper job. Give it a go I’m positive you can turn your hand to anything
Glutten for punishment peter not a project boat and a camper project your missing valuable pub time peter!🎉
Hello my favorite Yorkshire couple - best of luck with the camper I do hope you can fine the materials at a decent cost and/or someone who can do the work for you.
It looks a nice van
Hello, my friend, please check our email
Nice work!! If you ever get any grief with sharpness of borders due to bleed of paint then 'Frog Tape' is a ninja masking tape worth checking out:) Keep up the good work:)
What tools did you use specifically if you don’t mind writing. I was told to use a scabbler. What did you use?
Xx
👌👍
You two are stars with yer stripes
How about pale primrose or country cream could look good, or, depending on whether the window frames are shiny brass, or silver, how about something to match them? Good luck anyway, B
'Painted by a pro?' against all odd, looks like it.
Good job you two, well done. In the end shot the light just catches the boat so the coach line looks a lighter grey, and matches well with the mute look, so maybe a lighter grey is the way to go.
