  • King Charles III was officially proclaimed monarch on Saturday after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, in the first Accession Council ceremony to be held in 70 years. The council, made up of 200 Privy Counsellors -- primarily current and former politicians and other dignitaries -- proclaimed Charles III’s ascension to the throne in the State Apartments of St. James’s Palace in London.

If King George was like King Charles. We would be a part of the U.K. When King Charles was upset about the extra tray on the table he reminded me of my dad at work. My guess King Charles didn't want the tray to drop and make a mess. My dad gave me the exact same expression at work during a serious meeting I think it was a cup of coffee that was in the way.

Regardless of how one views the institution of the monarchy, her stoic and loyal commitment to her role was unquestionable. She was respected by citizens in good times and bad.
Will he further divide or help the monarchy at a time in which nations are reconsidering their relationship? Standing for human rights and humanity is important. Weighing in on subjects for monetary or industrial gain, state or otherwise, is drastically different.

I have, living in a monarchy as well, gained a lot of respect in the important moral head of state function. There is someone above the prime ministers, and they have to respond to this person.
King Charles: I praise his values. As this family tends to have long lives, he'll probably be King for many years to come. Queen Elizabeth was such a monumental figure on the world stage for 96 years. It seems odd to my tongue to refer to Charles as "King Charles". I am 55 years old so for all of my life I've known him as Prince Charles. It's going to take some time (for me). Even having to say God Save the King as opposed to God Save the Queen.
I realize the Queen's passing was inevitable but she had an aura about her that made it seem like she could live forever 💙 I am mourning her death as many of us are. She was truly a majestic person, may she rest in peace 🙏

The ascension council today predates the Norman conquest of 1066. That means for more than 1000 years this meeting of the illustrious of the land have gathered at the Kings Court (notice it was held at st James palace not Buckingham palace as it’s the court of st James Charles now becomes king of. And proclaim the Queen is dead long live the king.
The council today consisted of all living former prime ministers and 200 other senior politicians past and present of all parties and creeds of the left and of the right. Some of whom hate one and other, yet All are gathered despite of political difference but with one thing in common. They are all British and are ALL loyal to the crown. Politicians and ideology come and go, prime ministers come and go, but the crown endures. Eternally. And from that you get the smoothest and greatest platform in which as a nation we can practice parliamentary democracy.
The monarch is not pretend or merely ceremonial - he is the embodiment of the nation
the actual commander in chief of His Majesty’s forces, the font of all justice pardon and patronage and the supreme Governor of the Church of England.
The King has no political power but by being above it all he has supreme power.
The love we had for Elizabeth and the respect we have for the institution of monarchy which is older than parliament itself. And Knowing that, the weight of the whole nation now falls entirely on the shoulders of one man - most citizens of Britain, republican or monarchist, wish Charles well and hope and pray he will be as great as his late father mother grandfather and grandmother. All legends of their age.

good history, thanks. though one point...the monarch DOES have the absolute right to refuse to sign, and thereby veto, any law he chooses, with no appeal from that veto....it is also true that, the last ruler to DO this was Queen Anne in 1707....BUT we have NO idea how many times a monarch told the PM "I will sign this law ONLY if you change X, Y, and Z.".....and a very pertinent factor in this matter, IF there ever IS such a showdown between King and Parliament, is the following FACT....every military officer and every soldier and every police officer in the UK swears an oath to OBEY and be LOYAL to the KING....they swear NO such oath to obey the parliament or the prime minister

@@essessessesq completely agree. If for example a lunatic government ever somehow came to power and a bill was introduced to let’s say stop elections indefinitely or permanently dissolve parliament or dismiss the judiciary. The King as the commander in chief of the country absolutely would refuse to sign such a bill into law.
He could and would Dismiss the PM and the PM would have to go at the point of the bayonet if necessary.
He could and would dissolve parliament call for fresh elections and convene the military high command and order the generals air marshals and admirals to defend democracy at all costs.
That of course would never happen as this is England. But you are absolutely right, the King ultimately is the boss. He can fire the PM and he is under no obligation to sign any bill into law.
However the ramifications of him not doing so save for intervening to defend liberty his people or democracy itself then most likely in doing any of the above it would call a constitutional crisis the likes of which we’ve never seen before. The woke crazies would be out in the streets crawling out the gutters in their millions soiling themselves and winging and crying dictator and tyrant. Etc
Points well made tho mate ✌️🙏
I should add the king is the commander in chief and does have supreme command of every soldier sailor and airman however only the prime minister can order the launch of the U.K. trident hydrogen bombs.
So the powers of the monarch as commander in chief are vested in the prime minister as well. A general has to follow on order from the serving pm up unto the point the king fires the pm and appoints somebody else then they would legally have to obey that new kings first minister
Of course all fantasy and hypothetical but puts a spanner in the works re a clear definition of who’s in charge. ✌️

true, for the most part....BUT the King/Queen has the right to be informed of ALL important government actions, and the right to give advice and be listened to....2 important factors in this matter are [1] no law in the UK can be enforced unless the Monarch SIGNS it....the last time a ruler actually refused to sign was Queen Anne in 1707,,,BUT, we have no idea how many times a King has said "i will NOT sign that law UNLESS you CHANGE x, y, and z.".....so, COULD a King dare to make that threat?...this is where factor [2] comes into play....all officers and soldiers in the UK military and police must swear an OATH of absolute obedience and loyalty to the KING...and NO oath to obey Parliament or the prime minister....SO....if a King chose to exercise his fully lawful right to reject a law, the UK military is legally bound to obey HIM.,,,,would it?....so far no ruler has ever put this question to a tests... my guess is that in private, Queen Liz said many times "I will sign this law IF you make the following changes..." and the prime minister agreed, to prevent any possible confrontation with a monarch who has the sworn loyalty of ALL the armed forces.

Unfortunately, the reality is this isn’t true. Its not who has the power on paper, it’s who has the power in REAL LIFE. The Prime Minister of the UK is required to answer the call of The Queen (obviously now The King) within 15 minutes. THAT’S power. Make no mistake, all those politicians answer to The Royal Firm. These Royal bloodlines go back thousands of years before any sort of “political” existed. Beige me, they’re the true power. They have all the money and connections, therefore they have all the power.

I know it’s protocol but it seems so odd that they have to keep “announcing” that the queen is dead like it’s the first time anyone has heard the news.

Charles needs to learn how to control his temper if he wants to be a good king. I was shocked seeing him get upset over the ink pens and upset withn Camila because she was taking too long talking to people in crowd. I am not sure he will have the backbone or temerment for the job of being King.

good question....what it means is there is a long tradition in Britain....the monarch owns huge amounts of land and businesses, but gives ALL the money from those to the British Treasury and gets back just a small fraction of that for his expenses as King

I can already see one not so admirable quality of Charles III when he got annoyed at 9:58 but at least he was genuine.
With all the centuries of choreographed and practiced nature of the ceremony I am surprised that they didn’t have an assistant during signing to help remove signed paper and the tray.
And they should use modernize a bit perhaps use turn chair instead of dragging it

I was just thinking the same thing...why wasn't this rehearsed so the assistant knew the exact moment to step in and remove the tray out of the way? You would think with such an important ceremony the assistant would know what to do and when to do it.

Can some UK people explain how after the Queen be death for just 2 days, I don't know if she is buried already, why they didn't wait to proclaim the new king. I think that one event SHADOWS the other. Doesn't the Queen deserve a little more respect? She was the longest Queen in you country. This looks like when siblings look forward the will few hours after a person death. It's wrong I think why doesn't wait few more days.

    • @essessessesq
      @essessessesq 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

good question....this is all words from many centuries ago, when the only communication was by men riding fast horses with the news. These words were spoken soon after the ruler dies, back then....but it would take WEEKS until most people in Britain would get the news...perhaps your suggestion should be taken, to delay things bit now, since people get the news 10 minutes after it happens by using the little screens they all have with them now

Because, The country can't be left without the "head" of the military..
Wayyyyy back when that would have meant leaving the Country without a leader, protection etc...

    • @dovegoddess1100
      @dovegoddess1100 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

It's the governing rules in play. Just like the few times an American President has died in office, the Vice President was sworn in immediately. They don't "wait" to swear in the new President "out of respect". It's not a "matter of respect". This isn't like your own grandmother dying if you are a commoner. These are titles that must be recognized immediately so the respective countries do not remain leaderless.

      a few reasons:
a monarch is required to reopen parliament (across the commonwealth realms as well)
the kingdom needs a head of state in place
and to prevent a succession crisis
