      XCOM: Enemy Unknown: I'm not even gonna ask how you managed to miss an enemy with no cover who you were pointing your gun directly at, just know that you're gonna have to facetank the rocket I fire to defuse the situation.

    • @Zulk_RS
      @Zulk_RS 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I think the main reason XCOM game misses feel so bad even when their RNG is reliable and accurate is because of the animation. Regardless of how high or low the hit rate is, sometimes when you miss, you see the gun firing into the enemy, the bullets passing right through them and still it displays as a "miss". Maybe instead of having a firing and missing animation, a "Weapon Jam" animation that plays when you miss an enemy really up close might have helped mitigate the frustration a bit.

    We tend to fall into a mentality that "probable = guaranteed, improbable = never", and then when this inevitably proves false, we begin to lean too far the other way into a "Murphy's Law" mentality. That's when we start saying things like "of *course* my 90% missed and the enemy got a 5% crit on a 20% hit chance, this RNG is rigged!" in an attempt to make excuses for our own mistakes.

    Everything above 90 feels like a guarantee, anything below 60 feels like taking a risk. That's why terrains and supports are important, so you can improve your chances. But excuse me, I'll keep blaming the RNG if the enemy hit connects under 30 consecutively, that's just BS.

    • @red5t653
      @red5t653 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @Hollow Shell I mean, 30% is still low, and you don't expect consecutive 30 hit attacks to hit, do you? That's a 9% chance, and with 2 roll it's even lower. I think OP can call the RNG BS on that one.

    • @JXZX1

      Other games like the Elder Scrolls and Fallout grant you a set (or random) amount of points which you can allocate to whichever stat you wish to raise. I would prefer something like that in Fire Emblem.
      Keep the total points given random, but give me some control over a unit's stats.
      Most FE games can be beaten with zero growths, and that's a good testament to how well designed these games are. But it could be a little less frustrating for causal players.

      From my very limited understanding of the GBA games, I think enemies are more likely to crit than you. If the game uses double roll for your crits, but uses single roll for an enemy crit rate, you get unintentionally nerfed, because crit rates aren't likely to break over 50. I haven't found anything that confirms or denies the idea that the game uses double roll for crits, but I have seen some evidence that enemies use single roll.

    I once had Oscar miss four enemy-turn counterhits in the FE9 Serenes Forest chapter. He then proceeded to miss a fifth hit on the player phase. Given that his labeled hit rate was between 65-75 (depending on which of the four I tried to target), I'm just going to chalk that one up to an isolated incident of genuinely bad luck in conjunction with a dubious strategy that involved using not-Titania to execute it. Mostly, things go the way I expect them to... though, of course, I've had my fair share of lucky 30% hits and unfortunate 80% misses!

    Hey Mekkah , rng is very important when you play harder difficulties on the newer games , Lunatic( +) Awakening and Lunatic reverse FE12 are good exemple of that , to complete either of those mode you need to get very good level up rng , which involves a lot of reseting , also a single point of speed can make a difference between a character killing half the map or doing nothing .
    That being said , very good video .

    Great points. But when the monk on chapter 26 crits Nino on 6 different resets then I'm still blaming the RNG

    • @red5t653
      @red5t653 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Hollow Shell 6 different times on 1RN with presumably a 1% crit chance (ignoring hit here because it's a monk vs Nino) is a 1 in 10^12 chance.
      That is absolutely worthy of being called bullshit.
      Hell, even a single reset still ending up with a 1% crit is a stastical improbability so unlikely that in an average FE play through shouldn't ever happen even once (most games in the series get you to MAYBE 200-300 attacks, not the _10,000_ necessary to ensure repeat 1% crits)
      Getting crit once and yelling about it is dumb. But twice? On a RESET? That's completely valid.

  • @shadedhydra6674
    @shadedhydra6674 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I feel in general complaining about the RNG isn't exactly a pitfall as the RNG isn't exactly something that can be fixed since it's due to chance. That being said though the information given at the end about what strategies to use first on each turn makes a lot of sense and I am in agreement that if you know the game well enough then the only deaths you'll have will be because of the RNG. Great Pitfall vid as usual.

    • @Mekkkah
      @Mekkkah  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the nice comment! The reason I think it's a pitfall is because if you blame your mistakes/deaths on the RNG you'll never improve as a player, so long term it'll make you play worse.

    Amazing video as always! :)
    While certainly not the main topic of the video, i wouldve really liked a mention of fates weird RN system in the beginning where you explained the difference of 1RN/2RN with true hit below 50% and a sorta 3/2 RN above where 2 randoms are rolled but the first gets multiplied by 3 and added to the second, afterwards dividing by 4 (if i remember correctly), resulting in a weird function thats between 1RN and 2RN for the >50% rolls making Fates RNG feel really off compared to FE6-13.
    Though you didnt play Fates, so maybe you didnt know, so certainly no worries ^^

    • @Mekkkah

    "FE6 rolls 100 at a 1/18 the rate of other numbers"
    So, they generate a random number from 0 to 65535, and divide by 655, and forgot to account for the small chance of being at least 65500?

  • @DrewPicklesTheDark
    @DrewPicklesTheDark 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    RNG screwage can be a thing sometimes. Like for example a character say with like ~400% growths getting single stat-ups each level for 5 levels. But as this video states, it's not as rampant as some act.

    In Fire Emblem Genealogy of the Holy War I parked Dew (right after recruitment in some forest tiles. I was laughing when the enemy tried attacking him with a 0% hit chance. It was not very funny though when the boss had a 4% hit chance. Thankfully my larger army managed to rescue him, but a 4% chance of instantly dying, was not a risk I was willing to take. So I had a race to save him before the RNG claimed him. Each turn in 1 out of 25 times, he would die. And I would have no idea if this would be the turn he would die.

    Not really about RNG, but I'm playing FE8 on hard for the first time and having a blast. I've started early promoting, and I plan on not grinding at all. Having basically a second Seth after chapter 7 is insane. I'd argue Franz didn't need the promotion, (my first good Franz) and I should've capped Vanessa's speed before promoting, but I'll be ok. I'm also trying units I've never used before, like Seth, Garcia, and Moulder. It's still a shock to have Moulder rescue dropping lol.
    Speaking of low hit rates, how about those FE5 weapons. Gotta love 70 hit iron swords.

Felt weird, but then i remembered Biorhythm might have been screwing with him (fast speed, so i didnt actually see the majority of hit rates, but i doubt the hitrates of a bunch of Iron Axe Brigands would vary too much past Biorhythm)

  • @Xarjet

    Its just hard to accept that probabilities are just that. The only way to avoid dying to 1% crits is careful planning, if you take a risk you will loose sometimes but it's up to you how many risks you take. I mean the games (apart from FoW maps, curse those) tend to give you all the information you need and you can take your time.
    RNG is NOT at fault for poor planning or risky moves.

    9:05 a better analogy would be if there were also a 000 and a 0000 space on the roulette wheel, because that is more what playing FE6 is like. You simply have worse odds than in other fire emblem games.
    I actually wish FE6 had 1 RN RNG, seeing my 84 displayed hit rate hit 10 times in a row was very weird. It happens but man 1 RN RNG is very different from 2 RN.
