Mekkah, I used to suck at fire emblem. Then, I saw your pitfalls series and I got a ton better, but I found myself not enjoying the game as much as I left my favorite characters behind for optimizations sake. Now, even later, I'm playing like a pro and enjoying myself because of your videos, and your insistence on using units you like more than units that are 'the best'. I can't thank you enough.
I'm so happy pitfalls are back! I'm a big fan, Mekkkah. Could you make a video series with specific tips, maneuvers, and strategies? Like, how to optimally handle choke points, inventory assignments, and rescue chains? I'd watch the shit out of that.
After that intro, I can now say without a doubt that you have a perfect understanding of your fanbase I think I'd sum up pitfalls with the sentence "Please stop being wrong on the internet, guys." ... but then people started being wrong about pitfalls, and now here we are.
Dear mekkkah, I hope you will read this, before knowing you and Mangs I sometimes, casually play Fe, my favourite game is sacred stones, since is my first game of the franchise and I have a lot of great memories, I used to play it very casually, a lot of grinding, arena abuse and stuff like that, about three years ago I managed to finish the game in hard mode, needless to say I play whit a lot of pitfall, but than thanks to your videos I replay one more time few months ago trying to avoid all the pitfalls I can, and I had to admit that I had a lot of fun, I finally feel like I was playing the game as it should be. So in the end I really appreciate your help and work, and I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart! You amaze me Mekkkah, but without the quote on quote!! Keep it up!
Mekkah; I love Mardek RPG and would HIGHLY enjoy seeing an LP of it by either you or Mbangs! Also I really appreciate the meta nature of this episode 💙
It's funny that people think pitfalls are noob traps - I never seen 1st timers f.e. totally avoiding Jeigans, they typically try to use mostly low level units but throw pre-promotes into the fray when weaker units are in minimal risks, optimizing EXP gains by using weakest units that get more exp is something mostly done by people in between noob and veteran, not noob enough to appreciate safety pre-promotes offer, but not veteran enough for their tactical skills allowing not to worry about optimizing exp gains and getting best stats possible.
I've been following Pseudolonewolf/Tobias Cornwall for years. Making MARDEK 3 took quite a toll on him, so I think he's reluctant in creating a sequel. He also had to remove a brain tumor the last few months, so I'm hoping he's ok. He's also been making a new game called Sindrel Song and is music game. I'm looking forward to it even if it isn't an RPG since I like his games in general. He blogs at the website Tamingmind if you want to read what he is up to.
I just wanna say that as someone who's been playing FE for sixteen years now, this series still helped me immensely in thinking more critically about why I do things/give advice in the way I do. I still disagree on some points (hoarding, I see it more as risk of not having it for later/reward having it later) but it still made me sit & think about why I do the things I do. Thanks, Mekkah!
It's surprising to see Mardek in here, I've never seen any TH-camr ever talk about those games, even though they're excellent. Shame that it is discontinued, though I'm unsure whether Pseudolonewolf is still working on his reimagination of the series, but I do not see that becoming as good as the classic Mardek. Maybe you wanna play it on the channel? I'd love that.
The most real pitfall: thinking anybody cares how you play a single player RNG dependent game. There's no prize for beating any of the games other than what you get out of it. Just enjoy FE, it's really not that difficult of a series.
That point you make about old players giving new ones pitfalls they wouldn't normally stumble into and not using jeigans as an example of that actually reminds me...when I first played FE, I didn't use jeigan characters or early prepromotes because the person who introduced me to it advised against it. And apparently in another video I remember you saying it was the same for you. Makes me wonder how much of the people that fell into that specific pitfall did so because someone else said so. And hence continued a cycle..
I had it well, since the person who recommended Fire Emblem to me mentioned something about on the harder difficulty of one of the games you basically have to use the Jaegen even though he sucks lategame and you need to bench him, just so you can even reach lategame.
@dD ShockTrooper funnily enough what made me realize that Jeigans are useful was my first time playing FE6 HM. I first tried going through the first chapter without using Marcus and found it to be very difficult, so I found out the natural, albeit hard(pun intended) way of his usefulness. Retried the chapter using Marcus and I realized the true power of Jeigans by myself.
_Mekkkah uploads a pitfall video_ Everyone:YESSSSSSS did christmas come early this year? I'm so happy we have another pitfalls video Mekkkah! That intro is exactly how I feel about pitfalls coming backThanks for making these Mekkkah. I'm already looking forward to the next video whenever it comes out even if it takes another 3000 years...
Thank you SO MUCH for making this video! These pitfalls are the ones that people should avoid the most. The "mistake=pitfall" meme was fun, but it overstated it's welcome and became sort of an annoyance. So really, thank you so much for this Mekkah! 😁
I love this video and I'm so glad you're addressing this. Too often people criticize and mock other people for falling into "pitfalls" to the point where I only have a negative association with the word.
This is exactly what I imagine with pitfalls, not telling people what is right and wrong, but to encourage people to have freedom and not worry about things that don't matter in the long run. Its a philosophy that I use when playing other games too and i'm so glad to see this all set out in a pitfalls video!
So this video is a year old and I have been watching Mekkah for maybe that long? I don't know when the first episode of the Hector Hard with Mangs came out but after that, I have watched. This series and all the other videos are so great and made me love fire emblem when my interest in the series was falling after fates. Thank you, Mekkah, for the hard work and entertaining videos. Also, for the footage of Marcus owning for most of the video :)
The series has returned with what really IS a pitfall. Thanks as always Mekkah! I’m currently doing higher difficulties of various FE games with these tips in mind and it’s helping me become better!
Thank you *SO MUCH* for making this video, Mekkah. Now I feel like using Swordmaster Odin because I like how he plays is finally becoming even a little more socially acceptable. (Also because he shreds up the Arena.) I'm aware that he may not be the best unit out there. But I don't care, since I like using him, especially because his personality is always entertaining.
To sum this video up in one song reference: You can choose a ready guide In some celestial voice If you choose not to decide You still have made a choice You can choose from phantom fears And kindness that can kill I will choose a path that's clear I will choose free will Song - "Free Will", by Rush.
it is a good thing, that you cleared up what pitfalls means mekkkah, even if someone misunderstands what pitfalls is, atleast you or someone else can show this video.
The one pitfall I have the most trouble with is hoarding but you have helped me break this habit. I never thought about how a personal weapon will have around 30 uses and tend to have 18 by the end of the game so I became a better because when playing hector hard mode I found false friends impossible because I refused to used hector. I’ve had more help from not hoarding than hoarding so thanks. Hoarding is also a problem I broke in a few other games so Fire Emblem pitfalls can help more than just Fire Emblem players. I never thought Prepremotes were bad because I thought okay I good starting stats decent growth not fantastic but eh and no need for promotion item. I have a habit of using Marcus the whole game. When I started I thought good bases= good growths but now I know bases>growths. Mekkkah you are probably the main reason I don’t suck at Fe in Mang’s lp you explained the proper way to use a dancer optimally and thank you for that because you saved me so much pain. We all know Mekkkah you fall into your own pitfalls just watch a few of your lps. Almost forgot I started using serenes forest now because the fe wiki sucked so badly as shown by you. I know this is redundant at this point but thanks and keep making videos explaining how to not end up making Hector hard Mode not like Hector you hate yourself mode. Have great day
Mekkah is getting better at editing. That intro was Mangs-level. Ok, maybe not as much, but it was still pretty good. How many pitfalls do you remember falling for?
I remember when I started playing fire emblem, my friend who already played shadow dragon gave me some „advice“. He said to NEVER use Jeigans because they steal exp and have bad growths. He told me to sacrifice Jeigan at the end of shadow dragons tutorial because he wasnt good in the lategame anyway. And he told me to always promote at lvl20. If I wanted my units to be good. I played FE7 and stumbled right into all of these pitfalls. Looking back, I can laugh about all of these things. Getting good at FE and learning about pitfalls was really fun.
I got an idea for a pitfall vid. Thinking you HAVE to make perfect pairings in order to beat the second generation of FE4. While true, shipping gen 1 units in specific can give you more amazing units, your strongest unit in gen 2 is going to be Seliph anyways as long as you gave Sigurd a Leg Ring.
Yeah, I figured the next episode will be like this, after all the times I have seen you making long comments about it - the new one had to be about the misconceptions. Great episode, also great intro
Not only do we see the return of pitfalls but we also have Mekkah setting the record straight on how pitfalls are intended to be used. Teaching tools that help people get better at the game, and not something to use to criticize players making mistakes. Mekkah continues to show that his main concern is helping people improve at the game.
I really liked this episode; I appreciate the clarification, as I think it was much needed. I'll admit, even though you've said in past videos that you were not intending on dictating right or wrong, it was still easy (and incorrect) to assume that you were arguing for a certain playstyle or choice. Again, thanks; I promise I'll finally finish up watching your Thracia Iron Man.
I thought that I heard the Boss Battle theme in here! Fun fact, there's a discord out there to establish a unity port for MARDEK, and to keep the series going. For that, you get a like.
I really like this episode of pitfalls and clearing up the misconceptions of what pitfalls are and the overusage of pitfall as a bad play. I feel like the fire emblem community is prime to elitism with its tactical RPG style, and emphasis on playing effeciently, and can sometimes forgets to enjoy or explore the game. It can be easy as a veteran to learn to optimize the way you play a game and want to teach others these optimizations, but its just as important for someone to gain this experience on their own and learn from their mistakes. That's where i really enjoy your dynamic with Mangs in his Lets Plays and your blind playthrough of conquest. I think Mangs manages (more or less) fine in his playthroughs and shows that you can do sub optimal things, enjoy the game and still manage to beat the game. the closest comparison i could think of is playing through Pokemon multiple times. Would you play the game if you could only do speedrun strats and use the pokemon speedruns do? Legendaries have the best stat total so why not only use them? you only won cause you used X-items, that means your not good at the game and should train more? The freedom of the game is the most beautiful part and should be explored by everyone to each their own. There are learning moments that can probably only come from others, but its how these moments are taught that give off the impression of the community and can build or break it.
It's actually genius. No doubt that making a Pitfall series would eventually become a meme, and no doubt that Mangs would take that meme and beat it to absolute death to the point where the original meaning of the term is lost thus requiring this video. Very smart.
Pitfalls meta!... Also nice video it nice to clear out stuff up about pitfalls :) because to be fair there it was really vague up until this point. SORRY FOR THE BAD ENGLISH Also Forde is good use your Spd wings OR Power ring. (I don't know the right name of those thing) But yah 1 of than and he make for a great cav. I would go SPD perso It will help him alot if he can double his high Skill will help him hit the 2 hit in a row.
This was great. I don’t know how well it would work but if you are having trouble finding new topics for this what about making episodes specifically about the pitfalls of individual games. You did something similar in one of the pitfalls about FE4 (in fact I think it was episode 4 of pitfalls). Obviously this may not work but it is a thought. Anyway again great video and thank you for tour content as it has helped me out a lot
On the whole hoarding issue: in my opinion, it's the wise thing to hoard items to an extent when playing a new game. You never know when the optimal moment to use an item is, and it may be that it's beneficial early on but near essential later.
Exactly, most pitfall are only pitfalls if you know the game and do metagame(as in, you take decision based on your knowledge of the future.) For example, because i played Shining Force 1 and 2 a lot before starting FE games, i was accustomed to those games difficulty curves, wich spike in the end. In those games waiting a bit for promotion is not just viable, it's often optimal, and so is hording stat booster for sometime or certain healing item for that one nasty Boss(Zalbard makes any fe boss looks like a Joke). When i played FE i also expected lategame spikes, wich just are not there, but i had no way to know whitout spoilers.
@@noukan42 I haven't played all of either Shining Force, but that's mostly due to me hitting what I assume are those difficulty spikes you referred to.
I watch all your pitfall series, disagree on some of it but I fall into pitfall of falling into pitfall is pitfall. This makes me see the series in a new light.
I still hoard a bit and have trouble promoting before level 20. Using prepromotes is hard because I end up training too many units. Though, I recently early promoted in my latest FE8 run and the ghost ship was a piece of cake. Something odd that has happened to me is that I've lost patience with FE as I've gotten more experienced, and this causes my to try and rush maps, getting me killed. This also makes it difficult for me to use un-optimal units. I think I've been an FE player for 5-6 years now?
Early promoting is painful when you're playing at 20% or higher growth rates, and its kinda hard to not raise the growth rates or randomize the game after the seventh or eighth playthrough. I've never had a problem with trying to rush and getting something killed. Usually someone dies to astronomically low hit rates, which is annoying.
As someone who played through Conquest Lunatic blind on my first playthrough, I regret that I never once used Tonics For the last 4 chapters I gave up and scaled down to Hard mode instead But really, use the tonics they're great.

I think this is my new favorite FE related video.
"If you want to die take a shot every time I say Pitfall." Alright yeah I can do this. "PITFALL PITFALL!" I already give up.
Today is a trully blessed Day, Pitfall X descend in the earth to make us,subs happy :)
*It's been 3,000 years*
I always want to use that as a meme in comment sections but fear that no one will get it.
I love to see the return of the 3000 Year meme. Still wondering when we will get AZ's Flowette as an event.
It took me this long to realize the music corresponds to the games...
On the whole hoarding issue: in my opinion, it's the wise thing to hoard items to an extent when playing a new game. You never know when the optimal moment to use an item is, and it may be that it's beneficial early on but near essential later.
Exactly, most pitfall are only pitfalls if you know the game and do metagame(as in, you take decision based on your knowledge of the future.)
For example, because i played Shining Force 1 and 2 a lot before starting FE games, i was accustomed to those games difficulty curves, wich spike in the end.
Oh shit i have been waiting for this one
Next episode will be Pitfalls XI: Pitfall pitfall pitfalls to fallpit in pitfall pitfalls.
Long have we waited
MARDEK??? Core memory unlocked.
best intro
I watch all your pitfall series, disagree on some of it but I fall into pitfall of falling into pitfall is pitfall.
This makes me see the series in a new light.
The beginning made me emotional.
What a time to be alive
Usually someone dies to astronomically low hit rates, which is annoying.
but Mekkah, won't using jagens hurt your exp rating in an S rank ??? hmmmm.
Checkmate atheists.
Is using knights a pitfall if you get hard everytime you see the "no damage" sign?
Use Haar. He flies over pitfalls.
As someone who played through Conquest Lunatic blind on my first playthrough, I regret that I never once used Tonics
For the last 4 chapters I gave up and scaled down to Hard mode instead
But really, use the tonics they're great.
8:32 why did you put an emphasis on General Amelia?
Why Pitfalls are not Commandments in General
