I recommend you watch it. This is an anime that I started watching because of my interest in the SEGA Master System. I can't remember for sure, but this is one of the first anime series I watched - and this one in particular led me to look for more anime. Before this I was just watching Western television shows, and I was afraid of running out of anything interesting. After this I got into anime, and now I have so much of it on my computer I don't know if ever I will watch it all.

Loved the song when it came out. Just has a certain vibe. But the show itself wasn't all that popular in Japan, though the gun was the same design as used in the Sega Master System. I'm wondering if the show was intended to be 52 episodes but got cut because of low ratings or poor toy sales. It happens there as well as here. Bakugan was another series that was popular here but the final season was never shown in Japan though I remember watching it over here. Thanks for a bit of nostalgia...
Yes, the show was intended to have 52 episodes in total to promote the toys and games franchise, but disagreements between Sega and Tatsunoko Productions unfortunately brought it to a premature end. Same case happened with Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibouken.
Rainbowman was another. It was so radically different from the live action series done years before that it was disowned by just about everyone. Hard to even find those episodes. And don't get me started on Lensman. At least that one has been fansubbed but it took people more than 10 years to find all the episodes to do so.

infinitecanadian there was an American TV show from the 80s called photon which was essentially made to promote a series of toys by the same name. Oddly, the gun used in the photon looks similar to the one featured in this anime.

@@shusterandy Try Golion or Bubblegum Crisis. My favorite is the more recent Fairy Tail, and there is also the Slayers series.
