- Correction: #78 is actually "Yume wo Oikakete" by Mariko Yoshida
M: Music. A: Animation.
The +/- indicates the quality of each aspect in comparison with the lower place.
Featured in the thumbnail is the Daicon IV Opening Animation.
There's just something about the 80's and 90's that can never be replaced or replicated.
My father told the same words .. but about '50 & '60
:,(
especially in this day and age with all the censorship.
It simply wouldn't be able to exist.
The 70s and 80s the most, atleast for me.
Yes, it's called nostalgia.
i'm pretty surprised that a large portion of animes in the '80s were either romance anime or mecha anime set in space :0
>animes
/thread
Why are you surprised?
Don't forget crime action and fantasy .
80's Romance was a big deal from TV shows, Movies and Anime
There's a special charm in those '80 animes that I can't find in newer ones.
I still like anime a lot, but those old ones are still my favorites.
Cuz all the new ones are too darn cynical. These still had a peace and optimism to them.
no cg life was good
@@TazHall Not to mention some Shonen anime are still ongoing, as if they're overstaying their welcome. I find the shorter serials more interesting.
anime is plural for fucks sake.
I fell ya man
Not gonna lie Maison Ikkoku has the most memorable, over the time openings and endings for me. They aged so well, like..The perfect Wine.
Couldn’t agree more! The best 80s anime / manga for me, and one of the best romance anime / manga of all time!
is is without a doubt my absolute favorite anime/manga of all time, and i will never change my mind on this
I just finished the series a few months ago and I cannot agree more!
Hokuto no ken y Orange road
How can I stop being so obsessed with the 80's when I wasn't born at that time?!
Никита Селезнёв i thinks the same besides i born in 1989 i love the feelings of that decade like i was there sometime in my before life
You can't. Because back in the 80s despite life was hard, it still always had that positive vibe of of there's always a "better, brighter tomorrow"; looking at the world today, you can't help but feel depressing like things will only go downhill from here and all we could do is just attempt to slow down the process...
Никита Селезнёв me too, I was born in 1996
Why would you want to stop? 80's were the peak of culture
I actually have parts of 7 series from this time period....Dirty Pair was the best, Some have been re-released on BR/DVD in recent years...BTW I was born in the early 60s.
I realised that most female protagonist don't even look like children. They all look like adults or teenagers. The art style is also super different to where they look innocent and sweet but not in a loli kind of way. Also, 80s anime women look really hot lol.
I am not offending anyone but may i ask if most audience are lolicon?
Krampus about half but not most
80's aesthetics aimed at what they thought would be 21 century, almost all futuristic. The heroes of old, both western and eastern, were mature men and mid-20's women, and many were older. We didn't put that much burden on youth to be "sucessful" so early. So, most characters also were representative of this age, with kids being comic relief or exceptionally gifted genius.
Also, women in 80's were meant to look fit, slim and wild, with hair that looked like lion's manes. The point was, those youngsters should aim to become full grown men and women. Nowdays everything is too much precocious, to much early, too much rush, thus, characters "evolved" to be much, much younger, but fully functional. This is how Market controls our lives by culture.
Too much Moe.
I blame "The Star of Cottonland" for innovating the Moe genre.
Whoever made this video loves Maison Ikkoku
Whoever has a heart should love Maison Ikkoku.
...and with good reason! ;)
@@wildsmiley I mainly like the works of Rumiko Takahashi's Mangas/Animes (which Maison Ikkoku is a part of it)
(My English could be broken btw)
I made a similar comment.
As well they should. :D
city hunter, ranma 1/2, cats eye, lupin.. man too many fond memories
Yeah, I love Lupin The Third, especially that 1984-1985 Part III.
orange road urusei yatsura maison ikkoku dirry pair..
I added Cobra Space Adventure to this list. It's my first Anime that I watched with my father in my childhood, and I decided to rewatch it for now
Hello and appologizes of bad english, I'm Japanese.
#78 is name of other song, the song used its called 「夢を追いかける」 - Dream Chasing by 吉田真里子 - Yoshida Mariko
You don't have to apologize, I'm not a native english speaker either.
I thank you for that correction, since information isn't always correct, they really help me to avoid making more mistakes in future videos.
@@Sarubadooru I am a native English speaker, but I have ALSO been an anime fan since tha late 70s..I often sing along in Japanese with the opening & closing songs.
I approve of this list, the best one I have seen on TH-cam so far. I was missing some more City Hunter, more Urusei Yatsura, Slam Dunk and Yawara but when you put Kimagure Orange Road as #1 I knew you had good taste!
himura357 City Hunter is the best! Imo 🙌
Niki Sz yeah
@Chandelier Mirage That is true.
there is no one songs overpass Dance in the Memories (KOR ED 3)
This list missed Tokimeki Tonight aswell.
As an artist this is really beautiful looking at old anime art style it's amazing
This is truly an 80s anime overdose man....I'm going to fall over.
I gives you a weird nostalgic feelings to think that these are what people back then had, and most of their quality and efforts they put to them are even superior when compared to what we have today! How our society has changed...
Hokuto no Ken rules! The manliest anime/manga ever created!
Santo Di Vita Yup
P.S. Are you italian?
Yeah. Also jojos. But check out Berserk . Thats manliest as fuck
Nah, Serpico and Griffith are not so manly afterall. nor the elves or Selkie and Farnese. Just Guts, but a bulky protagonist is not enough to make a manly anime if it's filled with female or effeminated cast.
It's not Anime, it's Manime
Alessandro Melito He's not that manly
懐かしい。
70年生まれの自分に取って80年代は1番アニメをハマって見てた時代だから、ほとんどが何らかの形で見た記憶がある。
I loooove the style of 80's anime :D I don't know why but everything just looks so good
80's & 90's Japanese music is some of my favorite music, of all time. 😍
Look up J-Pop playlists!
Aaah I love how the top ones are Kimagure Orange Road's! Loved that show and was sad at the last episode. Great list and editing!
Sunrise was pretty much a dominating force in the 80s it seems. I get the feeling you're a hardcore Maison Ikkoku fan.
Even if we don't agree with the placement of the openings and endings, it's great to see and revisit these unique works that only the 80s had the capacity to produce.
The number one song really takes me to the 80s. What. A. Vibes.
Best Op/endings
-City hunter
-Maison ikkoku
-kimagure Orange Road
-Dragon ball z
-Saint Seiya
-Akai Koudan Zillion
Etc
Exodus PSV yes, dragon Ball Z but you should add Dragon ball
Always Saint Seiya
You said Zillion you have my heart.
dragon soul!!! No
YES OH MY GOD, THEY'RE ALL SO GOOD
holy shit thank you for putting kimagure songs on top 2
Los opening y los ending para mi siempre han sido obras de arte.
Thankyu soooo much for this video~!!
Whenever my friends and I are looking for a new anime series to watch we revisit this video-!!
There’s something so charming about the music in old anime... I can’t quite put my finger on it 🤧🤧🤧
Wait a minute, an anime had _'Alone Again, Naturally'_ in their opening?!
Omg I love it. 😭
Yes, Maison Ikkoku did 🙂 if you can, take a look at it 🙂
Originally, it was used to promote Gilbert Sullivan's music. Honestly, it suited to the series theme.
Yeah. And the song can be listened at the end of the episode 27. Try dont cry with that last scene.
I thought That Kitty was going ro be sued for infringement by Gilbert O'Sullivan because both "Alone Again, Naturally" and "Get Down" were used only one time...
I NEED ALL THESE SERIES IN MY LIFE. LIKE NOW!!
Except from Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya, Patlabor, Ranma 1/2 and other classics, I feel like I discovered a brand new world of anime by watching this video.
city hunter is good
ditto, such anime.. so little time to watch O_O
11:23 the quality of this looks like nowdays standards
Bruno Autran - Agree with you , I never realise that are so many animes out there .
city hunter 😭😭😭
Why has it always felt like the 80's was a wellspring of hope and creativity. So many risks taken on so many projects and so many simple ideas given the fullest of efforts.
How do we make that happen again? If it's happened once it can indeed happen again.
We can't. If something doesn't turn a profit, it isn't worth doing. That's our current mindset.
When's the last time you saw an OVA released? Can't do those anymore....doesn't reach a wide enough audience and can't be banked on.
@@WalkerRileyMC Not our current mindset. More like *anime companies'* mindset.
You've done a great work and I really appreciate it.
Thx man.
Thanks CCC:
What happened with anime? Was there a money over abundance back then in the 80's and 90's? All these shows look so good, they make many new ones look very cheap.
These are openings in the 80s. They're designed to be very appealing, to act as a hook to capture viewers attention and watch the show. Thus a lot of money has been pooled into the animation to look as cool and fluid as possible. Its likely that most of the anime in this list didn't have the same animation quality as their openings.
As for why more modern anime doesn't have such spectacular openings like their 80's counterparts is only a guess. I would think its more of a culture change than being cheap. There's streaming now, and openings really don't have the importance they once had. It could also be that anime is still very expensive today. Many studios in Japan still draw every frame traditionally. Instead of doing it completely digitally. Which could limit the production value of the animation. Don't take my word for it though.
Presper Very well put. That reminds me of the Thundercats intro, so smooth.
I think what happened is that the modern group of anime tries to produce very fast and appeal to a worldwide audience (or maybe Westerners). The older ones were really for Japanese or Asian audiences, and slow progress was made on them. For example, it was not unheard of to wait 1 or more years for a sequel!
There actually was a bubble in Japan's economy.
Japan's economy was booming during the 80s and 90s until it collapsed.
What a wonderful compilation. Thank you so much.
The song of Lady Georgie is amazing and I am listening to it almost every day!
Can’t help tear oozing , those anime songs recall the memories of my life dated back 30 years ago.
I miss this style of anime. I can't deal with the explosive, computer-generated low quality animation of today (I hate modern Disney-Dreamworks 3D animation as well).
well taht's just you hating ComputerAnimations, not CG being objectively bad lol
molu ormolu “low quality” you realise the quality is triple what it was in the 80’s right?
I Control My Fate it still has that. The quality you’re talking about is called nostalgia. It’s not unique, it’s not physical. It’s just nostalgia
I Control My Fate uhm no. It isn’t. I think you should actually watch anime and not just listen to the memes that make fun of shoujo. To say what you’re saying shows you have no understanding of anime from after the 80’s. FYI even anime from before the 90’s was flashy. Astroboy, sailor moon, dragon ball etc etc
I Control My Fate it lost its “water colour texture” bc the same shitty hardware isn’t being used anymore. It looked like that bc its graphical system sucked ass. If you want a water colourly look just go watch some samurai anime like the new dororo....or just watch Garo: crimson moon or overlord. Stop whining about anime not looking old and shitty anymore
80's character designs are fucking great.
"get wild" was the best ending!
Absolutely mad.... but maddely happy for the Kimagure Orange Road to be appeared on the list, specially for the 2nd opening!
I Love the OST of the KOR series, and the 2nd opening is just your 1st entrie!
You made my evening astonishing! Thank you!
Beautiful list. I would have have put Get Wild and Ai wo Torimodose much higher though, they're so iconic.
Daicon was a nice surprise!
Why do I feel so nostalgic for something that I didn't even grow up with I don't know a lot of these shows and like I don't think I know any of these shows but I can't help but feel very nostalgic for them even brings a tear to my eye.
Maison Ikokku used a famous english song *mindblown*
but only for a single episode....
Also JoJo
Much Appreciated for giving me another reason to say that the 80s was the absolute best decade in recoded history. I learned to speak and read Japanese because of Lupin, Macross, Orguss and Mospeada. Too bad Aura Battler Dunbine did not make the list. Thank you, Thank you again Thank you
Man, Maison Ikkoku is so damn good.
これだけのクオリティとバラエティあるアニメを浴びるようにみて育てたのは幸せなことだったんだなあ~
It is no accident that every 10th OP was from a mecha anime, 80s mecha anime OPs (say that 5 time fast) are the most aesthetic pieces of visual art that can be contained in 90 seconds
The 80's really never left us it's going to be back 1980-1989 2080-2089 3080-3089 etc etc right now we just have to deal with the 20's first then the 30's etc etc
You see all these anime from the 80's, and you realize how sad it is that a majority of it is not English subbed, or completely ignored on anime sites. Wouldn't hurt of course if companies in Japan decided to put these on DVD, or make them more available to watch somewhere.
Hell even stuff from the 90's, like Magical Taruruuto-kun is nowhere to be found, unless you go by devious means, and it's still not subtitled. Toei put up all of Ghost Sweepper Mikami with English subtitles, and I'm thankful for that, but Taruruuto is also their property, and is a bit popular. But it's pretty much left to rot.
The same with 80's Japanese dramas and a lot of 90's ones too. Sigh.
Man, I just want Aku Daisakusen Srungle to get a release in the states. They gave us Goshogun, why not Srungle?!
@@KingCasual1986 that really srungles my xabungle
You deserve a "like" just for inserting these two acronyms: MACROSS, MOSPEADA!Thank you so much for this compilation!❤
Love to see Orange road at high ranks. I kind of listen to them everyday.
Many listing sparked my forgetten childhood images too. thx for video.
日本のいいものは日本人よりも外人さんのが愛してくれるやなって
Kimagure Orange road had a special place in my heart 💜❤ for reals.
Agradezco el vídeo, y aunque me hubiera gustado que ciertos puestos estuvieran más cerca del top 10 entiendo que es un top 100 hecho a gusto personal del que lo realizo, muy buen video y excelente recopilación.
I love that Miyuki (1:16)and Machine Robo (6:20) are on this list. Not many people know about them, but they are underrated classics!
Miyuki is my favorite Adachi work for sure.
Very helpful! Im in the process of writing and animating a short segment of 80s style anime. This gave me alot of details to look out for
Oh that sounds very nice. I don't know if this compilation is comprehensive or representative enough, but if I'm glad if it helped you on discovering new shows and styles.
i'm 24 and i know most of them and i love them so much
Hopefully another great era for animation can come soon
Maison Ikkoku had some nice ones. It's a good series.
City Hunter is a goddamn good 80s anime. Change my mind.
Why would anyone even TRY?
Been using RyoS as my username, username were invented.
I would definitely watch 90s anime and older. I can't imagine being caught watching newer anime since I'm not a big anime guy, but I like the older stuff had more horror and was hella different from what we have now
Nice video. Dry Your Tears from Hokuto No Ken should be on here as well.
So glad that there are so many songs from City Hunter, I really love ALL of them !!
God, I love old anime songs.
it's pretty cool that you have Daicon IV on the list, it's the only one not written by someone from Japan if I'm not mistaken. it's also pretty funny that it actually made it at all since they used the song without permission from Jeff Lynne, I think he put forth a lawsuit but never actually bothered to bring them to court.
Pegasus fantasy very best!!!
+dancougar
I feel like I prefer Soldier Dream
:)
I’m very happy that you included lupin the 3rd in this list, it has a very small fandom but it really think it deserves more love.
Fandom's not so small in certain parts of the world.
Lupin TheThird yeah I know, but here in America it’s barely known
are you going to do a 90's anime?
Yes, I'm working on it.
I´m 18 too. Greetings from peru
Urusei Yatsura
Best show
シティーハンターもいい曲ぞろいだけど、
めぞん一刻の選曲センスが群を抜いている。
Thanks to your list, I read through Kimagure Orange Road and loved it. Completely transported back to my school years.
80s Anime is literally AMAZING ✨✨
Absolutely fantastic. Thank you for sharing!
WOW 80's music beat...Fantastic!!
Adorei vi um tempinho atrás graças o teu vídeo soube o daicon 4 obrigado.🤩😍
1º Kimagure Orange Road (all)
2º Maison Ikkoku (all)
3º City Hunter (Ending 1)
4º Choujikuu Seiki Orguss
5º Choujikuu Yousai Macross
Curiously a lot of japanese studios animated USA shows in the 80s and 90s. Especially Toei Animation, Topcraft, Tokio Movie Shinya, Sunrise and many more. Even the Street Fighter cartoon was animated by Madhouse and Sunrise.
This is the first time I have not seen Pegasus Fantasy make it in a top ten spot.
Maybe it could be higher, but I still don't think it deserves to be in the top 10.
yes i love Pegasus Fantasy. still listen to it to get my daily energy
about KenShiro 2 Tought boy no video on list classification? it is strange even Jeeg Robot Pirula or Capitan Harlock deserve enter in this best compilation.
@@Sarubadooru I think it does but ok.
Awesome collection! Many old friends among them, thank you!
My heart really misses these, beautiful the true golden age of Japanese animation
We were going to have a fight until #2 popped up!
I appreciate this list, as I now have more anime I have to look up than ever before. And thank you for this trip down memory lane for the ones that I knew.
I also loved the .5 for the two English songs on the list.
80年代はまだサンデーが頑張ってるね。
Great video. I did not know that there were so much animes like that.
Kaeus They also tend to have lots of episodes being all hand-painted.

11. Urusei Yatsura 100 (56, 6)
You're the absolute best for putting the second opening to KOR as # 1 🔥
Well done. A bit strange that the other Zeta or ZZ Gundam OP wasn't included. Nevertheless, great work.
Anime 80's and 90's with soul, it's so beautiful
i am getting nostalgia and i was born in the early 2000s
Creamy peanut butter jelly guy i was born in 1998 but watched mostly 80s and 90s anime in 2002, when i knew what anime was.
Enjoy!
Right?
Can you reupload the same but full of both opening & ending sequence.
YES! xD I saw Miyuki, Urusei Yatsura, Kimagure Orange Road, and Maison Ikkoku openings/endings
I also like all those song that are played on background in Miyuki.
All the classics
I'm not disappointed at the number 1 pick!
Thank you for the vid.
damn i miss the 80s and 90s anime.
Beginning of the golden age of anime....how I miss it ..
these are some real bangers
oatmeal hehe
Amazing how i looked at the thumbnail and the first thing that came to my mind was Maison Ikkoku
❤Kimagure Orange Road❤
Them old schools animes had a certain emotion hidden within them that would just touch your special soft spot, and songs be cool too.

Boy, was THIS ever a trip down memory lane!!
loved the music, the artstyle, everything was so nice, clean and simple, unlike the bullshit of nowadays anime
I really warm up to the LOGH themes. Used to skip them. But now playing them at full volumn is very good.
