【あらすじ】
幼い頃に自分を助けてくれた王子様に憧れ、王子様になりたいと願うようになった少女・天上ウテナは、入学した鳳学園で「薔薇の花嫁」と呼ばれる少女・姫宮アンシーと出会う。
エンゲージした者に「永遠」に至る「世界を革命する力」を与えるという「薔薇の花嫁」をかけて戦い続ける生徒会役員（デュエリスト）たちは、ウテナがかつて王子様から貰った指輪と同じ「薔薇の刻印」と呼ばれる指輪を持っていた。
ウテナもまたこの決闘ゲームに巻き込まれ、その背後にある「世界の果て」へと迫っていく…。

リアルタイムで見てた世代だけど未だにカラオケで歌う。
ほんと作品も楽曲も名作。
色気をすごい感じさせる作画が好きだった。今みたいにやたら胸を揺らすとかじゃなくて。
あくまで線としぐさだけで色気を感じさせる。
絵柄が独特なのもあるけど、それを最大限アニメで昇華したみたいな。

たった今見終わりました。
この作品に出会えてよかった。
個人的に歴代ベスト3に入る素晴らしい作品です。当時は学生だったけど、大人になっても何度でも何度でも見たくなる。
個人的には、アンシーはウテナの封じられた人格の一部で、それを解放し同一化するまでの物語、という解釈が好きです。
その解釈だと最後アンシーが外にウテナを探しに行くのはどうゆう事になるんですか？
私には、暁生という王子(支配する男)に囚われたアンシー(男の保護の代わりに犠牲を強いられた姫様)をウテナ＝自立した女性(男装)が解放する。
だからエンディングが閉じられた少女の世界を強制されたアンシーが門の外にでてウテナ＝自立した女性像を探すと見えました。故に少女の革命だと、私は黒薔薇編が好きです。
あと枝織が樹璃のロケット写真見たときの狼狽、困惑、嫌悪、優越と変わるところが秀逸。
当時からのウテナファンです♡

Fun fact, this was animated by the same team that did many episodes of Sailor Moon!
It's really visible if one knows Sailor Moon. Another reason to love Utena
it has the same director as sailor moon
Even the utena's manga creator, chiho saito, started her career as ink artist in sailor moon manga, and later joined the collective that made the anime, that's why utena's style is so reminiscent of sailor moon

ウテナ役の 川上 とも子さんは 本当に素敵な声優さんでした。 川上とも子さんが 今まで演じてきたキャラクターの中では 少女革命ウテナ シリーズの 主人公のウテナが大好きでした。
もちろん 今でも ウテナは大好きなキャラクターです。

Damien Thonk the animation is beautiful, the coloring is genius, and every line and shade is expertly placed in the frame.
I watched it like 3ish months ago and I'm still mesmerized, never seen anything like it before. The visual symbolism kind of reminds me of End of Evanghelion but... prettier? Idk it's a very gorgeous show, the movie is great too
I’ve watched this anime and it still surprises me how ahead of its time it was. It’s themes, symbolism, LGBT representation, story writing, etc. I honestly forget when watching it that it’s 25 years old. It’s like something that you would watch now. I’m convinced someone’s used a time machine from today and gone back to the 90’s to release this, it’s just so different for everything else around that time. This show is a gem, I’m glad it’s slowly gaining in popularity and people are realising how influential and original it is :D
Shoujo manga and anime were years ahead of shonen in term of representations and Utena is in a long line of that. Check out Lady Oscar / La Rose de Versailles.
Not sure it gains popularity. New weeks nowadays don’t even watch the classics. Many don’t even know evangelion.
@@marsenpai9078 I hadn’t even heard of it though until sorta recently, I think with the rise of LGBT+ shows such as The Owl House and Shera with female queer leads, shows like this are getting slowly more recognition for being one of the firsts. Maybe one day it will blow up and become a cult classic like Sailor Moon or something :)

This song has been my jam since I first, very accidently, rented and watched Revolutionary Girl Utena in late 1999... sucks getting old, but it's great hearing and seeing this in HQ!

The quality is amazing. It is openings like this uprezed that makes you appreciate how well hand drawn anime is compared to the 3D that is constantly used today.

@Janeiro I Honestly Cel Animation being expensive was a blessing in disguise, there were less anime and most, even the bad ones, at least looked good, and there were way more good ones.
Except that this anime cheaped out on animations by using reusing frames. Watch most of their fights and Utena entering the battle arena then you will know what I mean. Either way I prefer hand drawn animation. Mainly because I miss the color pallet of older anime. The color pallet of newer anime is bland unless if it's a movie or a high budget anime series.
@@briansilva3765 Except we got less adaptions of good manga which sucks. Also less variety which sucks. It's a mixed bag no matter how you see it.
@@sladejosephwilson2300 They put too much emphasis on putting lightning/shadows on the characters nowadays, making everything "glow" witch looks out of place and devalues a bit the color pallets. (The only good newer anime I've watched that doesn't do this is Mob Psycho 100, and that show does not fit the "anime art style")

耽美的な世界観に個性的なキャラクターならに素晴らしいBGMと物凄いパワーを放ってた作品

wow this is the best quality I've ever seen. visuals and music are so crisp i can't stop replaying it (i can't stop replaying the crunchy versions either tho LOL) such a beautiful show in every way.

@@IDarkCalibur In english it's Revolutionary Girl Utena! If you want a description it's kind of hard to describe actually.. it's set up as a somewhat normal magical girl/action anime at first but quickly shows that it's a deconstruction of fairy tale dynamics and a commentary on society's treatment of gender roles, sexuality, and children coping with the pressures and abuses of the adult world... lol it's very deep and can get very surreal with a lot of interesting symbolism. I definitely wouldn't say it's for everyone but i would also recommend it to everyone just in case they end up liking it because it's worth it. basically it's my favorite show ever. It can get very dark but it's so uplifting and hopeful too.
I've always loved Masami Okui's voice every time she sings.

Everyone, If you have chance to watch utena TV show, don’t forget it’s 90s anime.
They use stage show on visual design, unconspicuous hint to connect with Social phenomenon.
Ex:
1. prince and princess are social desirability.
2. Utena(pink hair one) want save Anthy(purple hair one) is her first step like feminism beginner.
3. Anthy bounded by a prince and that man is her brother! (Means very strong cage u can’t escape.)
4. In the end Utena understand she don’t want be a prince anymore, she just want let Anthy free and Anthy need broke the egg shell together. (broke egg shell means revolution, so this is revolution in personal way and revolute to the world. plus maybe 80% LGBTQ thoughts.)
I'm glad I managed to purchase all 7 manga volumes and saw that Utena didn't actually die as some people think, and some say she actually never existed and that she was just the way some people should be but once I've read the manga on the last page Utena is shown up saving Anthy from her coffin meaning SHE DIDN'T DIE AND SHE ACTUALLY EXISTED.

めちゃくちゃ考えさせられる内容やん、、、って衝撃を受けました。

Imagine being a director on an influential series like Sailor Moon with two prominent LGBT characters, and the producers frustratingly won't let you put all of the beautiful gayness into the show that you want to... so you decide "Alright, fine.... you know what? I'll go work on my OWN show, and i'll make it the most wonderfully gay thing that ever gayed!!" and then you create the brilliance and life-changing series that is Revolutionary Girl Utena.
And then imagine that through this, you help countless young people who need an outlet for their feelings, or give them the representation they always needed to be proud of who they are, with characters who face their own struggles with their identity to explore their feelings by usage of poetic metaphor, and stunning visuals and characterization.
This anime means the world to so many people AROUND the world. Not just Japan, but all the other countries of the world that received this show and needed it. For that, this show will always be a classic that shines just as brightly as the aforementioned Sailor Moon. ....maybe even more so, in some ways.
absolute AGREE. And this opening in particularly is my favorite anime opening and probably one of my favorite intros of all time. Every time I listen to it I feel a sense of inspiration and heroism that hasn't been replicated anywhere else.

The vast majority of this has already been explained by many more credible people including the director,Kunihiko Ikuhara and series staff itself, as well as a vast majority of their specific symbolism (even found in this very opening) has been copied, used and re-used in various yuri manga and anime since and over the years as well. Your take on it is not only extremely willfully naive, but also objectively wrong as this has been even explicitly confirmed by it's director, Kunihiko Ikuhara,that Anthy and Utena absolutely have a romantic relationship. You can argue with a lot of things, such as opinion, but you literally can't argue against the word of the series director himself, nor with Chiho Saito the member of writing team Be-Papas who also helped write the manga and FURTHER corroborated this.

@Motoko Chan oh yeah. I was warned about the symbolism and metaphors. Funny enough, I did try to watch Mawaru Penguindrum back when it came out, but I think i was thinkinh too hard about the metaphors in that show that I stopped watching it. This time though, Im just gonna shut my brain off and watch RGU. No overthinking this time until I finish the series.
And yeah, I'm gonna watch the movie. After seeing the dancing scene accidentally, there's no way I'm not gonna watch it.

@@sladejosephwilson2300 The way I see it, the car scene is a symbol for saving yourself. Utena pushed Anthy in the right direction - she was the "vehicle" for Anthy's change, but it was Anthy driving the car. She didn't need a "prince" to save her, she saved herself by leaving the academy with the support of her friends and lover, therefore breaking the cycle of abuse. You can also see it as a metaphor for entering the adult world (particularly Shiori's crash scene, Shiori being a girl who rushed into mature relationships despite not being ready, chased for the thrill and only looked to fulfill her selfish desires, which lead to her life falling apart). Overall I think the car scene is the Adolescence Of Utena counterpart to the last scene of the original series which is more concise and depicts Anthy straight up leaving Akio (her abuser) behind, no longer being bound by his control. But then again the director purposefully left the scene vague for the viewer to interpret it in their own way and I'm not the brightest person around,

Let's hope that Okouchi isn't going to repeat this ending for Witch from Mercury. Even now, it's hitting similar beats to what more or less happens in Utena.

It's a shame that there actually never was a real jousting scene between Utena and Anthy as shown within this intro. I always assumed that they were going to fight over who would be the one to be deserving of the "prince's" love...

I would say that animation in anime looked even better in late 80s and early 90s. however yes, utena looks good.

もう当時のクオリティで完成されてる作品なのでその気持ちめっちゃわかる
ウテナ様の声優さんがだいぶん前に亡くなられてるからそれはないと思うな。もしされるとしたらキャスト総入れ替えとかかな…
川上とも子さん以上の声優をキャスティングできるってんならいいけど多分存在しませんね
